ARCHITECTURAL WORK PORTFOLIO

//RESUME// [2013-2018]

I see space as a limited resource, and a good architectural design strive for utilizing that resource to function at its best. Creative compromises have to be made, and that is why I particularly enjoy doing it.

//MAKJAJA RESTAURANT// MAKAN DI JALANAN JOGJA

/MAKJAJA RESTAURANT// This was my early studio project where I utilized digital presentation for the first time. The design brief was to design a fast food restaurant located in Yogyakarta. I came up with the idea of localized fast food restaurant emphasizing the local’s unique eating culture called ‘angkringan’. The design itself is a mass play to create an effective program for restaurant function, responding to climate, as well as to present an attractive look of building exterior for commercial purpose.

//REVIVING KRIDOSONO// HISTORICAL PUBLIC SPACE

/REVIVING KRIDOSONO// In the scheme of future Yogyakarta, the population number is growing signiďŹ cantly as well as the increasing land use demand in contrast to its availability. People compromise to share an uptight space with each other which psychologically may lead to negative effect of crowding. The limited land available in the highly-inhabited city of Yogyakarta prompted us to renovate the current private stadium site which historically designed as green area for garden city movement in 1917. We designed a velodromeshaped recreational park with a view point towards surrounding colonial buildings on top of sport facilities. At the same time, it still allows green open space for water catchment function and integrated as a transport hub.

//THE GLASS HOSTEL// OLD HOUSE TURNED INTO HOSTEL

//GLASS HOSTEL// The competition was held by Backstreet Academy, a social enterprise that combines unique international travelling experience with responsibility to nurture local community. Considering the company’s mission, we were inspired by local small glass crafting industry which located in the same street of the site. With strong recycling spirit, both from the building refurbishment concept and material-use, this hostel utilized glass at the core of its design. After several arrangements to ďŹ t in the new function of a small hostel into the existing house, we added a brand new identity through a striking facade. The glass are tinted and installed as windows and walls in order to create iridescent shadows inside the building.

//DOWANGAN LRT STATION// CONNECTING KAMPUNG

//DOWANGAN LRT STATION// Located above the ring road of Yogyakarta, this LRT station would serve commuters including who lived in the suburbs of the city. The design had to accommodate an efďŹ cient journey in a daily basis, while at the same time preserving current social interaction of the society. I proposed a multi-layered pedestrian path which connect the drop zone and parking area with the elevated station. k,The pedestrian was designed by adapting local atmosphere and providing spaces for the community activities such as markets, sports hall, daycare, and local government ofďŹ ces. Apart from that, as new landmark of the region the form design still remained a great consideration. Without constructing striking new form, distinctively-shaped columns inspired by traditional structure of joglo were infused in the interior to create a distinctive character.

//THE CAVERNOUS OFFICE// CORRESPONDS RESTING X WORKING IN SMALL OFFICE DESIGN

//THE CAVERNOUS OFFICE// The world is shifting the conventional workplace into more relaxed space as well as corresponding with limited land availability in the cities. This competition sponsored by USG Boral Ltd as a building material production company, challenged the participants to utilize their emerging products in to create a creative way for Small OfďŹ ce Home OfďŹ ce typology. Our team focused on contrasting two contradictory functions of working and resting to create a balance for the users. We used different technical installation of gypsum boards resulting a distinct characteristic based on its function: a striking interior for the working space to stimulate creative energy, on the other hand, a simpler and cleaner geometries for resting area.

//PULAU BIDADARI HOTEL// This is another competition sponsored by USG Boral Ltd we entered. The brief was very speciďŹ c on how to utilize gypsum products to maximize hotel and resort design. This design took site in Pulau Bidadari, Kepulauan Seribu,Jakarta. As the island has a great deal of history on colonialized Indonesia, we wanted to design an indische look on the building. The original color of gypsum board became a key role for the interior. Another point is also laid on the lightweight character of gypsum. To create an optimal ventilation on the beach climate as well as in purpose to personalize the modular space for customer, every room is equipped with rotating walls.

//WINI LAND PORT OF ENTRY// RETHINKING BORDERLAND IN EAST NUSA TENGGARA

//WINI LAND PORT OF ENTRY// In team with Transportation Laboratory Universitas Gadjah Mada under directory of Transportation Ministry Republic of Indonesia, we integrated a Land Port of Entry in the complex of Wini National State Borderline Masterplan. The terminal will serve vehicles that go through East Timor to Indonesia and vice versa. Considering the current light loads of vehicle, the terminal will be built in 3 phases until 2035 with increasing capacity in each phase. As the ministry’s asset, they require that the building have to reect the identity of the organization through the use of blue color as the main facade. Meanwhile, the shape is inspired by the enveloping roof of the common vernacular houses in East Nusa Tenggara which protect the interior from relatively dry climate.

//MENDIRA COMMUNAL KITCHEN// COMMUNITY-BASED CONSTRUCTION FOR MENDIRA VILLAGE

//MENDIRA COMMUNAL KITCHEN// Originally initiated by Holopis and Mantasa, two non-proďŹ t organizations concerning in village development trough wild food crops cultivation, partnering with local women empowerment organization in Mendira Village in Jombang, East Java, Indonesia, they invited architects and designers of the same vision to collaborate with the projects. A series of ecological facilities to support the agriculture program is proposed. The design mainly focused on simple but sustainable system derived from local natural resources. The abundant amount of bamboo and clay inspired the use of bamboo as main structures and cow dung-clay walls to minimize cost. The buildings consisted of a main communal kitchen, ďŹ replace, and toilet. Each of them would have water reservoir to produce independent water resource for community activities.

[2014]

This project was an elective summer course for architecture students of Sydney University and Universitas Gadjah Mada which held in Bali and Yogyakarta Indonesia. We learned from professional architect and bamboo craftsmen how to use bamboo as building material. After the course, we built a 1:1 prototype in the campus parking lot of a wide-span bamboo shed and couples of pavilion which used as seating platforms in the park.

Garengpung is an insect widely found in Javanese villages which has a distinct sound. The sound of Garengpung is often remarked as a sign from the nature that the dry season is going to start soon. Their population diminished signiďŹ cantly because of habitat loss and the high level of pollution. The nostalgic spirit inspired the creation of this installation to correspond the challenge from the exhibition in reviving the almost extinct bamboo construction in Indonesian cities.

This work samples visualize how I respond to natural and social issue through architectural design in various projects, both in academical context and professionally. I am looking forward to another opportunity to improve sensibility in design. I am also excited to connect with more people in order to enrich contacts and inuences in designing proactive alternatives.
