My works mainly follow two clues: renounce the world and embrace the world. Honestly, I often think about my attitude to the mundane world.

Renounce the World Jewelry gives me a sense of belonging. I can escape from the mundane world for a while, feeling free and safe when I create them, without thinking about practical issues, such as wealth, ambition, personal relationships, etc. Besides, I am influenced by Buddhism and oriental philosophy to a some extent, which advocate that people should have enough time to introspect themselves and coordinate the relationship between themselves and the world.

Embrace the World Some of courses I attended had collaborations with jewelry companies, and tutors would require us to create jewelry for

RENOUNCE THE WORLD | EMBRACE THE WORLD

a virtual commercial environment. However, I did not satisfy with the current products because I hope my work could be products and beyond products. Thus, I made Key to and Halo finally. I call it “period of embrace. I have courage to interact with the world, after I had my values of the world and confirm my attitude to it. I want to embrace it and tell it about my opinion. Both of these two attitudes inspire me to create. I think they are compatible, instead of two sides of a coin.

OTHER WORKS FROM 2008-2011

Individual Work Type: Academic

Project Description The main purpose of the course aims at creating a jewelry brand, with specific theme, style, target customers, etc. At the beginning of the project, we chose a film or literature to study. What I chose was the film named April Story, which mainly described how a girl became accustomed to her college life in Tokyo and grew up lonely but joyfully. Associating with my own experience, I decided to create a series of brooches for floating people who study or working in Beijing without a booklet of registered permanent residence. We call them “BeiPiao. It means drifter.

KEY WORDS

Following the feeling above, I collected pieces of bark, twigs and withered fruits to create.

then they drift away.

Peaceful

Unlike traditional jewelry, they would not keep stable.

Plain

They may be worn down and disappear. Drifters in

Mixture of warmth and cool

Project Description At the beginning of the course, everyone chose an artist to study, including his/her life story, art works, etc. We also imitated some of their art works, basing on our understanding of the artist. After two-week discussion and games, we summed up key words of our comprehension to the artists or our feeling. By this way, we got a rough description of jewelry we wanted to create as well. Besides, we also had five questions to think during the course. What is art? What is philosophy? What is jewelry? What kind of jewelry are the good ones? What kind of jewelry do you want to create?

ABOUT THE ARTIST

ANALYSIS OF PAUL GAUGUIN Villain

Abandoning his family Promiscuity Being unruly Being pretentious

The moon and six pence written by W. Somerset Maugham inspired me. Thus, I studied Paul Gauguin. He renounced the modern civilization and classical culture to pursue his artistic career and primitive lifestyle.

Devotee’s temperament

Having a soul which cannot compromise with anyone (Eyes of figures in his paintings)

Having his faith for art (Struggle, clash, rebirth)

Having an ultimate proposition (Where do we come from? What are we? Where are we going?)

18

19

21

I drew every day during the course, and it occurred me of the sentence: sketch is an artist ‘s diary. Therefore, I created my jewelry as a series of small paintings, recording my struggle, desire, and realization. Just like a traveler, she picks up what she finds and what she learns during the trip.

KEY WORDS - Clash

· Struggle in mind

· Cold, sharp, merciless, hostility, metal, impetuous

- Primitive

· The primitive and inherented desire

· Bare, rough, natural, punchy, sex

- Honest

· Being honest to oneself,to the inside one

· Look into the mirror, gazing at yourself

- Regain and rebirth

· After being confused and unsatisfied with the

· Realize the truth, the owl flies off the tree at

and rebirth, one can regain the knowledge of good and evil, then to be more perfect.

Brooch: The White Sea Silver, copper, canvas, watercolour, thread, coral, acrylic 7.2×4.7×0.7cm When I got the piece of white coral, it occurred to me a stranger’s death on the beach in my hometown. He wanted to rescue his daughter who was involved onto the strong waves, but both of them were drowned. I tried to do CPR on him with my friend, but it was

too late. I still remember the white foam out of his mouth. 33

Death is similar to sleep. One keeps working all day long, so he/she needs a bed to lie down. Death gives humans a chance to have a rest. For other still living people, they also have a chance to make up and resume their lives. One day when I woke up, I found myself rebirth. I have departured from this suffering shore to reach the other shore of nirvana, regaining the knowledge of good and evil. Now, when I write down these words, I realize that one can have thousands of times to rebirth during one’s short life.

Untitled

DISPLAY There was a bridge on the fifth floor in the School of Design. I planned to display Pick up there. When someone picks up the realization of life, they tend to rebirth. I would like to compare this process to “Du” in Buddhism. One can depart Tahiti was only a corner located two hundred meters away from you

from this suffering shore of transmigration and reach the other shore of nirvana.

When they said, you travelled thousands of miles there

Someone used to tell me about the universe In case I thought, it was flat They called it science

Someone used to tell me about contentment with life In case I escaped They called it fate Looking forward But looking forward to nothing

When I meet you It isn’t you It isn’t me No another time No another chance

- What is jewelry? It is not part of body, but be with body. - What is art?

Life has no another chance It is ridiculous to live without honesty

A relationship. A river. - What is philosophy? The original meaning of it: Love to wisdom, despite various philosophical schools A verb: love thinking, pursuing the truth, like Larry Darrell, hero of the Razor’s Edge. - What kind of jewelry are the good ones? It can be worn + Someone would like to wear - What kind of jewelry do you want to create?

The poem was written on 26th October 2010. I believe it is also part of the portfolio.

36

It is not important what concrete jewelry I want to create. It is important that I still like creating.

RESEARCH I researched the history of vending machine and vending machine art during the first week of the course, and had a study on the operating principle of it as well.

The History of Vending Machine and Vending Machine Art

A Typical Vending Machine

1. A Piece of Sky 1966, Yoko Ono

9 trackes of drinks (plastic bottle) 250~600ml ×120

2. The Daily Palette

12 trackes of drinks (zip-top can) 180~355ml ×318

1970, Robert Piser 3. Gumble Poetry 1998, Laura Moulton & Ben Parzybok

Volume of trackes: 100×75×30mm or 93×75×30mm Number of goods: depends on volume of goods

1

3

The first vending machines in regular usage came about in the 1880s in England. They dispensed postcards with science views of London. Accept: 1 RMB & other coins (sum 300~400)

Vending machine art was popularized by Fluxus movement. Fluxus were the first to recognize the creative potential within vending machines. They blurred the line between art and selling of the art. There were other artists selling artworks or expressing their ideas via vending machine.e.g., · The Daily Palette. 1970, Robert Piser.

Change: 1 RMB (sum 500 ) & 50 cents (sum 700)

The artistic plan is a joke, but serious. Key to IV is the final one of my work for the course. I abandoned all features of keys. It is designed as a dart because I deem that all these keys can be hidden weapons, fighting against the negative social problem, even some people. I wanted an intact joke. However, the keys here cannot speak it totally, so I made a booklet with the keys. If Key to comes on stream, the content of the booklets will be diffenrent. It is only a sample here.

REVIEW There is an axle behind the silver cloud, connecting the moon and the piece of sky. Wearers can move the blue piece and fix it at a specific angle at will. However, we had a problem here. The whole pendant consists of three main parts. They have to be controlled in an appropriate tightness, in order to avoid the piece of sky being too loose or too tight. It is regrettable that it is too tight finally. The blue piece scratches the surface of the moon. 72
