FINISHED SIZES Tote measures 16” wide and 17” tall. MATERIALS Medium (worsted) weight cotton yarn was used for the tote pictured. o Lily Sugar'n Cream (70.9 g / 2.5 oz per skein) in White, Yellow, Mango, Hot Pink, Strawberry, Soft Violet, Hot Green, and Mod Green o I Love This Cotton (100 g / 3.5 oz per skein) in Brown, Antique Gold, Red, Mulberry, Amethyst, Vintage Teal, Turquoise, and Aqua o Brown was used for the Main Color (MC). 2 skeins of brown were needed to complete the tote. All other colors required less than a full skein of yarn. o Completed Owl Tote: 337 g / 12 oz Size H/8/5mm crochet hook Tapestry needle Handles for tote [Figure 1, pg 6] 16 buttons for owl eyes [Figure 2, pg 6] GAUGE Gauge is not critical. Completed totes will vary in size with different yarns and hooks used. Owl tote pictured was worked with an H-hook. The owl motifs measure 5 ¼” in diameter, finished octagons measure 8” in diameter, and the squares measure 3 ¼” in diameter. ABBREVIATIONS USED MC = Main Color yo = yarn over sp = space st(s) = stitch(es)
BLO = Back Loops Only ch = chain sl st = slip stitch sc = single crochet
hdc = half double crochet dc = double crochet rev sc = reverse single crochet dc2tog = double crochet 2 stitches together
PATTERN NOTES All referenced figures can be found on pages 6 – 11. Finished motifs and/or finished tote may benefit from blocking. The tote pictured was not blocked, however, the stitching on the octagons is worked in the BLO which causes them to curl inward somewhat. And, there is a great deal of handling to complete the tote. Motifs may want ‘refreshing’ once tote is finished. 1|Page

Owl Eyes (make 16) The black buttons are crocheted onto the white of the eyes. Add one button to your white yarn before starting each eye. Buttons can be added to any one of the 13 dc that make up the eyes. Please see [Figures 33 – 42] for how to add buttons to the dc. Leave a 6” yarn tail at start and when fastening off to use for attaching to owl. With White yarn: begin with an adjustable ring, ch 2, 13 dc into ring; cut yarn and extend loop on hook until yarn tail pulls through [Figures 43 & 44]; tighten adjustable ring. Using a tapestry needle, weave the ending yarn tail under the top two loops of the first dc [Figure 45], then weave between the top two loops of the last dc towards the back of work [Figure 46 & 47], weave yarn tail down towards the center, *do not pull too tightly*; weave yarn tail to opposite side of center as beginning yarn tail [Figure 48]. Owl Beak (make 8) Leave a 6” yarn tail at start and when fastening off to use for attaching to owl. With Yellow yarn: Ch 5, 1 sc into 3rd ch from hook, 1 hdc into next ch, 1 dc into last ch, fasten off. Owl Assembly Position the beak on owl. With a tapestry needle or small hook, pull the yarn tails to the backside of owl. Using one of the yarn tails, and a tapestry needle, weave yarn tail up to the right side of owl, just under the beak, and sew a few of the stitches at the tip of the beak down. Then weave yarn tail to the backside and towards the other yarn tail. Knot these two tails together, then trim ends or weave them in. Position eyes on owl. With a tapestry needle or small hook, pull the white yarn tails to the backside of owl with a small space between them. Knot these yarn tails together to secure the eyes then trim ends or weave them.

Fasten off at the end of each row then join new color where indicated in pattern. Begin with an adjustable ring Row 1: ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 5 dc into ring, fasten off & tighten ring – 6 dc Row 2: insert hook into top of ch 3 from Row 1 and pull up new color, ch 4, dc2tog into sp between ch 3 and 1st dc from Row 1, ch 1, (dc2tog into sp between next 2 sts, ch 1)(repeat 2 more times), dc2tog into sp between next 2 sts, 1 dc into same sp, fasten off Row 3: insert hook into sp between ch 4 and 1st dc2tog from Row 2, pull up new color, ch 1 (does not count as 1st sc), 2 sc into same sp, 2 sc into next st, (2 sc into next ch-1 sp, 2 sc into next st)(repeat 3 more times), end row with 2 sc into last dc from Row 2, fasten off – 22 sc Row 4: insert hook into 1st sc from Row 3 and pull up MC, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc into next st, 1 hdc into each of next 2 sts, 1 sc into each of next 4 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 2 sts, 1 dc into next st, ch 3, 1 dc into next st, 1 hdc into each of next 2 sts, 1 sc into each of next 4 sts, 1 hdc into each of next 2 sts, 1 dc into each of next 2 sts, fasten off & weave in ends. 4|Page
Joining Motifs Using your favored joining method and MC, join motifs together as shown in [Figure 49]. Motifs for tote pictured were joined via slip stitching through the back loops – move up 1 hook size for this type of join as the sl sts tend to pull in tightly. For an example on this join, see [Figures 50 & 51]. Due to the unusual shapes being joined, you might find it helpful to mark each of the ch-1 corners with a stitch marker or scrap piece of yarn. Each side of each motif has 12 stitches to be joined plus a ch-1 for each corner. Once all the motifs have been joined as in [Figure 49], fold project in half with right sides together [Figure 52] and join motifs along the bottom edge and side of tote. Fasten off and weave in ends. Turn tote right side out. Top Edge of Tote Round 1: Join MC to the back loop of any hdc on one of the octagons, ch 3 (counts as 1st dc) For each octagon, work 1 dc into the back loops of each hdc. Where the octagon meet the triangle, work a dc2tog into the two stitches at their corners [Figures 53 – 57]. Evenly space 12 sc across the top edge of the triangle [Figures 58]. Continue to work around the top edge of tote with dc2tog into the two stitches at the corner of the triangles and octagons, work double crochet sts into the back loops of the hdc of the octagons, dc2tog at the corners, and 12 sc along the top edge of the triangles; join with a sl st to top of ch 3 Final Counts: o Each octagon will have 12 dc o Each triangle will have 12 sc o Each octagon/triangle corner will have 1 dc2tog o Total stitch count along top edge of tote = 104 sts (48 dc + 48 sc + 8 dc2tog) Round 2 (BLO): ch 3 (counts as 1st dc), 1 dc into each st around, sl st to top of ch 3 – 104 dc Round 3 (work from left to right): ch 1, 1 rev sc into 1st dc to your right, 1 rev sc into each dc around, sl st to first rev sc, fasten off, weave in ends. Material for Attaching Tote Handles (make 4) With MC, ch 26 Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook and in each ch across, turn – 25 sc Row 2: ch 1, sl st in each sc across, leave a 12” yarn tail then fasten off – 25 sl sts Attach crocheted material to rings on tote handles and to the finished tote [Figures 59 – 61]: Fold crocheted material in half. Place the folded end partially through one of the rings on the tote handle. Now pull the two ends from the folded material through the loop made at the folded end. Pull the ends tightly to secure in place. Position tote handles in desired location. Using the 12” yarn tail from each crocheted piece and a tapestry needle, sew the material to the inside of tote.
