My journey in architectural heritage conservation began with a simple question: How can we keep historical buildings alive for future generations? This curiosity has evolved into a passionate professional pursuit, supported by my Master's in Architectural Heritage Conservation from the Polytechnic University of Valencia (Spain) as a Fundación Carolina scholar.

Currently leading project development at PROLIMA for Lima's Historic Center, I bridge theoretical knowledge with practical implementation. My work on significant monuments like the San Andrés Royal Hospital and Quinta Oyague has allowed me to explore fascinating intersections between traditional conservation techniques and contemporary needs. Each project reinforces my commitment to preserving our architectural heritage while adapting it for modern use.

As an ICOMOS Peru member and published researcher, I've contributed to international discussions on urban heritage preservation, presenting at forums from Milan to Brazil. My expertise has been shaped by hands-on experience in Peru's historic centers and enriched by my role as an educator at two leading universities.

THIS HISTORICAL SITE, TOGETHER WITH THE NEARBY SAN BERNARDO CONVENT, FACES CHALLENGES SUCH AS PHYSICAL AND VISUAL BARRIERS, OUTDATED SPATIAL USES, AND LIMITED UNIVERSAL ACCESSIBILITY THE PRIMARY GOAL OF THE INTERVENTION IS TO RECONNECT THE SITE WITH ITS URBAN AND NATURAL SURROUNDINGS WHILE RESPECTING ITS CULTURAL SIGNIFICANCE

THE "ITERATIVE PROCESS FOR THE VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION WITH A 3D MODEL FROM MULTIPHOTOGRAPHIC TRACING" (THROUGH THE VERIFICATION OF THE MODEL BY SUPERIMPOSING THE MODEL WITH MULTIPLE PHOTOGRAPHS) WAS USED. THIS WAS APPLIED FOR THE RECONSTRUCTION OF EACH OF THE ORNAMENTS OF THE ART NOUVEAU FAÇADE, WITH A BASE OF 35 HISTORICAL PHOTOS FROM DIFFERENT PERSPECTIVES IT WAS POSSIBLE TO VIRTUALLY RESTORE ALL ITS ORNAMENTS AND DETAILS.

VERIFICATION OF THE 3D MODEL VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION, IT IS VERIFIED FROM DIFFERENT POINTS OF VIEW THAT THE SAME MODEL MATCHES PERFECTLY IN ITS ELEMENTS, PROPORTIONS, SPANS AND DETAILS; VALIDATING THE 3D MODEL IN THE VIRTUAL RECONSTRUCTION PROCESS.

AS A KEY MEMBER OF THE PROJECT DEVELOPMENT TEAM, I CONTRIBUTED TO THE PROPOSAL DEVELOPMENT, HISTORICAL RESEARCH, AND DIAGNOSTIC PHASES OF THIS SIGNIFICANT CULTURAL HERITAGE PROJECT.

THE SAN ANDRÉS HOSPITAL, A 16TH-CENTURY BAROQUE BUILDING DECLARED A NATIONAL CULTURAL HERITAGE MONUMENT IN 1972, UNDERWENT A COMPREHENSIVE TRANSFORMATION FROM ITS ORIGINAL FUNCTION AS THE ROYAL HOSPITAL TO A TECHNICAL-PRODUCTIVE EDUCATION CENTER (CETPRO). THIS ADAPTIVE REUSE PROJECT AIMED TO PRESERVE BOTH ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE AND TRADITIONAL LIMA CRAFTSMANSHIP.

THE PROJECT INTEGRATES MODERN UTILITIES THROUGH NON-INVASIVE AND REVERSIBLE CONSTRUCTION METHODS WHILE MAINTAINING THE BUILDING'S HISTORICAL INTEGRITY. THE ARCHITECTURAL PROGRAM DISTRIBUTES EDUCATIONAL AND CULTURAL SPACES ACROSS FOUR MAIN AREAS: THE STREET-LEVEL SERVICES FEATURING A SHOWROOM AND INTERPRETATION CENTER; THE MAIN COURTYARD HOUSING ADMINISTRATIVE FACILITIES; THE HISTORICAL ARCHIVES COURTYARD CONTAINING THE COLONIAL AND REPUBLICAN BENEFICENCE ARCHIVE; AND THE WORKSHOP COURTYARD DEDICATED TO TRADITIONAL CRAFTS TRAINING.

THE CETPRO PROGRAM INCLUDES SPECIALIZED WORKSHOPS FOR WOODWORKING, STONE MASONRY, MURAL PAINTING, CERAMICS, AND PERFORMING ARTS, ALL DESIGNED TO COMPLY WITH NATIONAL BUILDING REGULATIONS AND MINEDU STANDARDS. THIS TRANSFORMATION ENSURES THE PRESERVATION OF BOTH ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE AND TRADITIONAL CRAFTSMANSHIP FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

THE INTERVENTION IN THIS EMBLEMATIC BUILDING OF LIMA'S HISTORIC CENTER, LOCATED ON SANTA ROSA STREET, REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT CHALLENGE IN PRESERVING THE CITY'S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE. THE PROJECT, DEVELOPED ENTIRELY FOR PROLIMA, FOCUSES ON TWO FUNDAMENTAL OBJECTIVES THAT ADDRESS BOTH THE STRUCTURAL SAFETY AND THE HISTORICAL-CULTURAL VALUE OF THE PROPERTY.

THE FIRST OBJECTIVE CENTERS ON THE PRESERVATION AND REINFORCEMENT OF THE FAÇADE, A CRUCIAL ELEMENT REQUIRING METICULOUS INTERVENTION TO ENSURE ITS STRUCTURAL INTEGRITY. THE RECOVERY OF ITS LOAD-BEARING CAPACITY IS ESSENTIAL, ESPECIALLY CONSIDERING LIMA'S HIGH SEISMIC ACTIVITY. THIS STRENGTHENING WILL NOT ONLY PRESERVE THE BUILDING BUT, FUNDAMENTALLY, PROTECT THE LIVES OF ITS OCCUPANTS AND PASSERSBY, ADAPTING THE STRUCTURE TO CONTEMPORARY SEISMIC SAFETY STANDARDS WHILE RESPECTING ITS HISTORICAL VALUE.

THE SECOND OBJECTIVE ADDRESSES THE URBAN AND AESTHETIC DIMENSION OF THE PROJECT, FOCUSING ON RESTORING THE BUILDING'S ORIGINAL MORPHOLOGY. THE THREE-LEVEL NEOCLASSICAL FAÇADE, CHARACTERISTIC OF DOMESTIC CIVIL ARCHITECTURE OF THE PERIOD, REPRESENTS A SIGNIFICANT ELEMENT IN SANTA ROSA STREET'S URBAN PROFILE. ITS RESTORATION WILL CONTRIBUTE TO RECOVERING THE HISTORICAL SPATIAL SEQUENCE OF THE THOROUGHFARE, RETURNING TO THE SECTOR ITS HERITAGE CHARACTER AND STRENGTHENING THE CULTURAL IDENTITY OF LIMA'S HISTORIC CENTER.

THIS COMPREHENSIVE RESTORATION PROJECT DEMONSTRATES A BALANCE BETWEEN HISTORICAL PRESERVATION AND STRUCTURAL SAFETY, SETTING AN IMPORTANT PRECEDENT IN THE RECOVERY OF LIMA'S ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE. THE INTERVENTION NOT ONLY SAFEGUARDS A HISTORIC BUILDING BUT ACTIVELY CONTRIBUTES TO THE URBAN REVITALIZATION OF THE HISTORIC CENTER, PERFECTLY ALIGNING WITH PROLIMA'S OBJECTIVES FOR THE RECOVERY AND ENHANCEMENT OF LIMA'S BUILT HERITAGE. AS PART OF MY MASTER'S DEGREE IN ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE CONSERVATION AT THE POLYTECHNIC UNIVERSITY OF VALENCIA (UNIVERSITAT POLITÈCNICA DE VALÈNCIA), MY FINAL MASTER'S THESIS INVESTIGATED THE EVOLUTION AND CONSERVATION OF ONE OF PERU'S MOST SIGNIFICANT HISTORICAL BUILDINGS. HERE'S AN OVERVIEW OF THE RESEARCH:

MY RESEARCH FOCUSED ON THE COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF TRADITIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES IN THE LIMA POST AND TELEGRAPH HOUSE, PERU, AN EMBLEMATIC BUILDING CONSTRUCTED BETWEEN 1876 AND 1897. THIS STUDY REPRESENTS A COMPREHENSIVE INVESTIGATION INTO A PIVOTAL MOMENT IN PERUVIAN ARCHITECTURAL HISTORY, WHERE TRADITIONAL BUILDING METHODS BEGAN TO GIVE WAY TO INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES.

USING THE GETTY CONSERVATION INSTITUTE METHODOLOGY, I CONDUCTED AN EXTENSIVE ANALYSIS THAT COMBINED HISTORICAL DOCUMENTATION, PHOTOGRAMMETRIC SURVEYS, AND ON-SITE ASSESSMENTS. THE BUILDING STANDS AS A UNIQUE EXAMPLE OF ARCHITECTURAL TRANSITION, FEATURING TWO DISTINCT CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS WITHIN THE SAME STRUCTURE: TRADITIONAL WOODEN BEAM AND JOIST FRAMEWORKS, AND MODERN METAL FRAMEWORKS WITH BRICK VAULTS.

THE RESEARCH REVEALED HOW THE BUILDING'S CONSTRUCTION HISTORY MIRRORS THE BROADER TECHNOLOGICAL AND SOCIAL CHANGES OCCURRING IN PERU DURING THE LATE 19TH CENTURY. THE FIRST PHASE OF CONSTRUCTION PRIMARILY UTILIZED TRADITIONAL TECHNIQUES, INCLUDING WOODEN STRUCTURAL ELEMENTS THAT WERE WELL-SUITED TO LOCAL CONDITIONS AND SEISMIC CONSIDERATIONS. THE SECOND PHASE INCORPORATED INDUSTRIAL ELEMENTS, SUCH AS METAL BEAMS AND HYDRAULIC TILES IMPORTED FROM BARCELONA, REPRESENTING THE MODERNIZATION OF PERUVIAN ARCHITECTURE.

THROUGH DETAILED ARCHIVAL RESEARCH, I UNCOVERED PREVIOUSLY UNDOCUMENTED ASPECTS OF THE BUILDING'S CONSTRUCTION, INCLUDING THE USE OF METAL FRAMEWORKS WITH BRICK VAULTS, WHICH WAS DISCOVERED DURING EMERGENCY REPAIRS IN 2018. THIS FINDING PROVIDES VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THE EARLY ADOPTION OF INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES IN PERU.

THE STUDY ALSO INCLUDED A COMPREHENSIVE ASSESSMENT OF THE BUILDING'S CURRENT CONSERVATION STATE, IDENTIFYING VARIOUS PATHOLOGIES AND PRESERVATION CHALLENGES. USING ADVANCED PHOTOGRAMMETRIC TECHNIQUES AND DETAILED ON-SITE ANALYSIS, I DOCUMENTED STRUCTURAL ISSUES, MATERIAL DEGRADATION, AND THE EFFECTS OF PREVIOUS INTERVENTIONS. THIS ASSESSMENT LED TO THE DEVELOPMENT OF SPECIFIC CONSERVATION CRITERIA AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR FUTURE INTERVENTIONS.

ONE OF THE PROJECT'S KEY CONTRIBUTIONS IS ITS DOCUMENTATION OF HOW THE BUILDING SERVES AS A PHYSICAL TESTAMENT TO THE TRANSITION FROM TRADITIONAL TO INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION METHODS IN PERU. THE COEXISTENCE OF BOTH SYSTEMS WITHIN ONE STRUCTURE OFFERS VALUABLE INSIGHTS INTO THE EVOLUTION OF CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES AND THE ADAPTATION OF NEW TECHNOLOGIES TO LOCAL CONDITIONS.

THE RESEARCH CONCLUSIONS EMPHASIZE THE BUILDING'S SIGNIFICANCE NOT ONLY AS AN ARCHITECTURAL MONUMENT BUT ALSO AS A DOCUMENT OF TECHNOLOGICAL ADVANCEMENT IN PERUVIAN CONSTRUCTION HISTORY. THE RECOMMENDATIONS PROVIDED IN THE STUDY AIM TO ENSURE THE PRESERVATION OF BOTH CONSTRUCTION SYSTEMS WHILE ADAPTING THE BUILDING TO CONTEMPORARY USES.

THIS INVESTIGATION CONTRIBUTES TO THE BROADER UNDERSTANDING OF ARCHITECTURAL EVOLUTION IN PERU AND PROVIDES A METHODOLOGICAL FRAMEWORK FOR STUDYING SIMILAR HISTORICAL STRUCTURES. IT ALSO ESTABLISHES CRITERIA FOR FUTURE INTERVENTIONS THAT RESPECT BOTH THE BUILDING'S HISTORICAL SIGNIFICANCE AND ITS CONTINUED ROLE IN LIMA'S URBAN FABRIC.

THE STUDY'S FINDINGS HAVE IMPORTANT IMPLICATIONS FOR HERITAGE CONSERVATION PRACTICES, PARTICULARLY IN CONTEXTS WHERE TRADITIONAL AND INDUSTRIAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES INTERSECT. THE RESEARCH DEMONSTRATES HOW CAREFUL DOCUMENTATION AND ANALYSIS CAN INFORM PRESERVATION STRATEGIES THAT MAINTAIN THE AUTHENTICITY OF HISTORICAL STRUCTURES WHILE ENSURING THEIR SUSTAINABILITY FOR FUTURE GENERATIONS.

THIS PROJECT SERVES AS A BRIDGE BETWEEN TRADITION AND MODERNITY, BLENDING TRADITIONAL CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES WITH CONTEMPORARY ARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE. THE MUSEUM’S DESIGN INCORPORATES ELEMENTS INSPIRED BY THE CHINCHA CULTURE, SUCH AS GEOMETRIC PATTERNS AND LOCALLY SOURCED MATERIALS. RAMMED EARTH WALLS AND OTHER SUSTAINABLE TECHNIQUES ARE EMPLOYED TO ECHO THE ECOLOGICAL AND CULTURAL VALUES OF THE CHINCHA PEOPLE.
