Festival News

he Dulwich Festival is just around the corner, running from 12 to 21 May. Don’t miss the opportunity to book your tickets to attend one of the many events taking place on your doorstep. From music, walks, talks, theatre, fabulous fairs and the truly wonderful Artists’ Open House there is something for everyone to enjoy. Broadcaster and journalist Robin Lustig will be in conversation with Deputy Political Editor for BBC News, John Pienaar, exploring extraordinary tales from the world of journalism. This year’s musical calendar caters to all tastes, from a fascinating performance of Walton’s ‘Façade’ by the Bloomsbury Ensemble of London, with additional music by Haydn, Stravinsky and Mozart; internationally recognised organist Paul Derrett; indie-folk quintet Patch & The Giant; blues

singer-songwriter Adam Norsworthy; the folk and soul sounds of singer-songwriter James Riley and the return to the Festival of The Harlem Meer Cats with their energetic take on jazz classics. There is a wonderful array of familyorientated events, including the acclaimed Tangram Theatre Company, an exceptionally silly performance by Clowns Without Borders, a children’s concert and the ever-popular fairs throughout each weekend. A highlight of the Festival is always Artists’ Open House, which sees over 250 artists open their homes and studios to the public across both weekends. In this age of growing awareness about how bad a sedentary lifestyle is for our health, walking to work can make a huge difference in our lives, our lifespans, and if enough of us do it, our environment. Here is a recipe to help you on your way! Makes 18 Bars Preparation time 15 mins Ready in 20 minutes

Ingredients • 60g sunflower seeds • 60g sesame seeds • 60g pumpkin seeds • 60g flax seeds (also known as linseeds) • 60g Pine Nuts • 100g semi-dried cranberries • 100g semi-dried blueberries • 100g gluten-free porridge oats • 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1.5 teaspoons ground coriander • 1 x 397g tin condensed milk • 150g unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Method 1) Preheat the oven to 1800C/3500F/gas mark 4. Line a 24cm square baking tin with baking parchment. 2) Place the seeds, fruit, oats, sugar and spices in a large bowl and mix well. 3) Put the condensed milk and butter into a bowl and place over a pan of gently simmering water. Melt together until well blended and hot. This will take about 15 minutes. 4) Stir the butter mixture into the fruit and seeds and mix really well. 5) Spoon the mixture into the tin and pack down lightly with the back of the spoon. 6) Bake for about 20 minutes, until slightly golden. 7) Remove from the oven, cool and cut into bars. Grow your own herbs

here’s nothing nicer – or healthier - than cooking with fresh herbs picked from your own garden. Most are easy to grow and look fab, whether in borders or containers and raised beds. Mediterranean varieties prefer sun and free-draining soil - add coarse grit and organic matter to clay soil. Others, such as coriander, mint and parsley prefer some shade and plenty of moisture. Here’s my pick of the best.

Mint Mint can be invasive in a border, so it’s best grown in a pot. It Iikes rich moist soil and can tolerate shade. Keep picking it to encourage growth and divide it when it’s outgrown the container. Varieties include Lemon Mint, Apple Mint and Chocolate Mint – nice in puddings! Uses: Great in teas and summer drinks, with roast lamb or in Middle Eastern dishes such as couscous – I love mint sprinkled over feta and salmon before roasting.

Sage Sage has lovely silvery leaves, but needs a good prune in early spring to stop it getting leggy. There are varieties with different leaf colours, such as purple and golden sage. Uses: Great with onions in stuffing, with pork or sage butter.

Thyme Its foliage comes in colours from golden yellow to variegated silver – and is best picked before the pretty pink or purple summer flowers. Use: Use a few fresh leaves in stews and with meat such as beef burgers – also nice in minestrone soup.

Bay A handsome evergreen shrub that can be trained into a ball, pyramid or lollipop. Use: Bay leaves – fresh or dried - give a lovely flavour to stocks and soups. (Remove them before blending!)

Rosemary A must-have herb – rosemary is tough, easy to grow and has pretty blue, lilac or white flowers. It can get big but is easy to prune into a neat shape. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ has a tall habit whereas creeping prostrate varieties are good hanging over walls. Use: Great with roast lamb and roast veg.

Oregano (marjoram)

Best harvested before the pretty purple-pink flowers appear – but they’re lovely too and are a bee magnet! Use: Strip off a few of the leaves for tomato-based pasta sauce or Bolognese. Or use the woody stems to make a bouquet garni.

Chives:

Chives like well-drained soil, but can grow in heavier soils in partial shade. The flowers are so pretty, and you can eat them in salads, then cut the plant back to the ground for a second flush. Otherwise keep snipping off buds to encourage growth. Use: With a similar flavor to garlic and onions, they’ll liven up salads, eggs and cheese dishes.

Fennel

The tall feathery foliage of fennel looks lovely with other tall perennials in a border and the yellow flowers are followed by edible seeds. Use: Fresh leaves are tasty in salads and collect the dried seeds to make teas.

Basil

Unlike the others, basil is an annual. Grow in pots on a warm windowsill and avoid overwatering. You can grow it from seed or small plants – I bought a pot from the supermarket last year and divided it into five different pots. Sweet basil and Greek basil are two good varieties to look out for. Use: Delicious sprinkled on pizzas or tomato-based Mediterranean dishes or blend with pine nuts and parmesan to make your own pesto.

Stress & your body What effect does stress have on the body? Stress is not necessarily a bad thing, but too much stress, can be very harmful to the body. So how do we learn to manage stress and what is the impact it has on our minds and bodies?

Central Nervous System The central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and the spinal cord, and can be considered the command and control centre of the human body. It communicates with the rest of the body via neurons linked to what is called the peripheral nervous system (PNS). When a stimulus is introduced to the body, receptors communicate with sensory neurons, which in turn communicate with motor neurons to affect a response within the CNS. A nervous breakdown can happen when the CNS is subjected to repeated and prolonged stress. It can also be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Worry, chronic stress, fear, anxiety, nervousness and panic attacks are all symptoms of a mental breakdown, or burnout.

Allostatic Load Allostasis is the process of achieving stability (homeostasis) through physiological or behavioural change; it is the wear and tear on the body that develops over time when an individual is exposed to chronic and fluctuating stress levels. Every system in the body is affected by allostatic overload. Initially, the production of adrenaline and cortisol sharpen up the memory, keeping the individual focused in a time of danger. As the stress is repeated however, the neurons atrophy and memory becomes impaired. The immune system is impacted also; low levels of stress promote immune function by sending immune cells to the areas of the body where they are needed to defend against a pathogen. Chronic stress however, has the reverse effect of suppressing immune function, and the individual’s risk of chronic disease suddenly becomes elevated. 26 | SE21 - April 2017

Stress And Exercise If chronic stress is left unchecked it can lead to physical and mental breakdown. Now, exercise can’t directly help certain things, but it can help to improve your state of mind, help you sleep better and therefore think more clearly. Exercise has been proven to decrease the production of stressrelated hormones and increase the production of other hormones such as serotonin, adrenaline and dopamine, which together can contribute to making you feel more positive, happier and uplifted.

Anxiety, Depression And Exercise Exercise is often under-prescribed by the medical community as part of a treatment plan for anxiety and depression, but despite that is widely considered to be central to helping people manage their condition. It isn’t only the chemical responses in the region of the brain that help make people feel better about themselves, but also the physical changes can help improve one’s self-esteem and feelings of self-worth and competency.

The Brain And Exercise There are numerous positive changes to the brain that occur during and after exercise (specifically aerobic exercise). These changes occur in different parts of the brain, and in some cases the benefits are still enjoyed even after you stop exercising. One of the best ways to manage chronic stress is exercise, but it must be at the appropriate intensity, for the right time and the right type. If you are very stressed, it might be best for you to start with a gentle walk. If you’re worried about your stress levels, consult your GP as a first step.

ATED or not ATED?

ith 31st January long since passed most tax payers thought they were home and dry. However, this is not the case for the growing numbers of taxpayers who have purchased residential properties via a limited company. As a result of ATED your deadline is fast approaching. ATED is not associated with any youth culture of yesteryear. ATED is the acronym for ‘Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings’ (ATED) a tax charged on 'non-natural persons' (a company, a partnership with a company member, or a collective investment scheme) which hold an interest in one or more UK residential properties and where that single property is worth more than £500,000 (since 1st April 2016). ATED came into effect on 1st April 2013 as an anti -avoidance scheme against individuals who acquired high value UK residential properties through non- natural persons. The property is said to be “enveloped” because it sits within a corporate “wrapper” or “envelope”. ATED is charged in set property value bands for 'chargeable periods' from 1st April – 31 March. The payment of the ATED annual charge is due and payable by 30th April. This leaves all non-natural persons with a 2017-18 ATED tax liability less than 30 days to prepare their ATED return and make payment to HMRC. Interestingly, the penalties for failing to make ATED returns or for making incorrect ATED returns are the same as for personal income tax returns. The 2017-18 ATED tax charges are set out below.

Although ATED is based upon property value bandings, it is necessary to emphasise that the ATED is not a replacement for the local Council Tax. The ATED is an additional and separate tax charge 30 | SE21 - April 2017

not associated with any local Council Tax. Moreover, the property values do not remain fixed at the 2012 valuations as properties are required to be re-valued every five years for ATED compliance. A separate ATED return must be submitted to HMRC for each property that falls within the ATED regime. There are several allowable reliefs from ATED. However these must be claimed on an ATED relief declaration form and submitted to HMRC at the same time as the ATED return, on or before 30th April. Each ATED relief has been assigned a separate form by HMRC. Therefore a separate relief form must be completed and submitted for each relief being claimed. However, where one particular relief is being claimed for more than one property then these may be submitted on the same relief declaration form. HMRC property valuation bands are based upon the market value as 1st April 2012. However, any property acquired since 1st April 2012, requires the application of the open market value as at the date of acquisition. In addition, where a property owner believes their property falls within a 10% tolerance zone of their band, they can apply to HMRC for a pre-return banding check. However, as the time scale for processing these is a minimum of 30 days, this may not be a viable option for those with 2017-18 ATED liabilities. Non-natural persons who have breathed a sigh of relief thinking they’ve been saved by the bell as their purchase has yet to be completed, should read on. Where a property is acquired after the 1st April, an ATED return and payment date will be due 30 days from the purchase date. The liability will be based upon an apportionment of the annual charge. However, purchasers of a new build are granted 90 days from purchase date to submit their ATED return and make payment. The increasing trend in non-natural persons purchasing buy-to-let property portfolios may reduce personal income tax liabilities. However the personal tax tail should not wag the dog. MAKE IT FUN There is plenty of time for learning techniques and tactics. Let children experience the thrill of moving and playing. As the great West Indian cricketer Sir Vivian Richards said, “Once they have experienced the thrill of smashing the ball to all parts, the pain of getting out will be enough motivation for them to seek you out and learn how to be patient and defend.”

FUNDAMENTALS Don’t jeopardise the fun element but do encourage the basics. Agility, balance, co-ordination and speed are attributes that will stand children in good stead. These core physical qualities, allied with the natural motivation to be active, mean your child is now well on the road towards being physically active for life.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE It’s important to recognise the value of participating in a range of physical and sporting activities. The transferable skills children pick up from an enjoyable and varied schedule will ultimately produce more motivated, adaptable and skilled performers over time.

KEEP THINGS CHILD CENTRED It may challenge you, but keep your child at the centre of this journey. When they start to show some promise, it’s helpful to be aware of the potential slippery slope that can take parents to a point where success means more to them than it does to the child. Your child is driving, on this journey you can be the sat nav if they get a little lost!

“IT’S ONLY A GAME” (FOR SOME) Bear in mind your child’s unique personality traits and feelings towards what they are doing. For some it is just a game but for others winning drives them. Results will matter to them, but help them learn to win with humility, lose with dignity and, most importantly, to respect their opponents, their team mates, their equipment and the officials.

FAILURE IS OPPORTUNITY TO GROW The sports world is fantastic for providing chances to experience success and failure and learn from both. Your child will suffer setbacks along the way. Encourage them to be resilient enough to bounce back with lessons learned. You will want to protect and defend them of course but remember this is their journey. Don’t prepare the road for your child, prepare your child for the road.
