I have noticed how quiet it goes during the Summer months. Hopefully everyone is having a wonderful time on holiday. However if you are staying around Dulwich (and why not, with this glorious weather), don’t worry, there is plenty to keep you occupied. Check out our full events listing starting on page 8. There are details of summer workshops for children on pages 30-32. Remember there are more events, stories and news at www.arounddulwich.co.uk. After the excitement of the World Cup, it is back to club football, with the season kicking off this month. Read about Dulwich Hamlet’s 125th Anniversary on page 29. We have their fixtures for August too. Call 020 8088 1941 angela@semagazines.co.uk www.semagazines.co.uk

Thursday 16 August: Reading of Alexander ‘King’ Paul’s Poetry 7.45pm #BooksAtParksEdge. Following June’s reading event featuring Herne Hillian author, Louise Candlish, our focus turns to the profound book, ‘Climbing Clouds Catching Comets‘ by Alexander ‘King’ Paul, a collection of his poems and innermost thoughts. Climbing Clouds Catching Comets has been described by Afua Hirsch as clambering “inside the mind of a writer whose talent fizzes on the page.” Sadly, Warwick University student, Alexander passed away last year, aged 23 following a difficult battle with terminal brain cancer. His mother, Joanna Brown will read, alongside two performance poets. The reading will focus on some of Alexander’s poetic comment on themes including family, love, identity and isolation and will pay tribute to both Alexander and his book. Tickets: Entry to the event is FREE – the book will be on sale that evening (available for preread from Dulwich Books) and all book proceeds will go to the Alexander Paul Organisation. Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

12 Ways To Leave Your Garden Going away? Here’s your pre-holiday to do list 1) Give your perennials a good cut back. Tired hardy geraniums can be sheared right back – they’ll produce new growth and may flower again for you on your return. The same goes for plants like nepeta and Alchemilla mollis. 2) Deadhead roses before you go away so they’ll put energy into new growth and more flowers, rather than seeds. Don’t be afraid to cut back hard to thick stems and strong buds – it’ll encourage stronger new shoots. Cut off the spent flowering spikes of salvia or penstemon – these may come again. 3) Lightly trim lavender removing old flower spikes with a pair of hand shears. Take a few cm off the tips of leafy growth to encourage side shoots and keep the plants bushy. 4) Trim back taller perennials that have flopped onto the grass or are smothering other plants – or stake them securely so they’ll cope with any windy days while you’re away. 5) Water. This is particularly important given the hot weather we’ve had. Drench your garden before you go - a really good soak to the roots is better for developing deep rooting. Focus on plants that need moisture – ferns, hydrangea (the clue is in the name), newly planted shrubs, trees or climbers and anything that’s showing signs of drying up. Don’t worry so much about drought plants like iris and lavender (See June’s article for plants that don’t need much watering once established). Then mulch around the roots with bulky organic matter such as compost to lock the moisture in and prevent too much evaporation. 6) If you can, get someone to pop round and water your pots – and the rest of the garden while they’re at it! It’s best in the early morning or at night. Group containers together in a shady spot to make it easier for the person watering. This increases humidity around the plants – but it may encourage disease if left like this for too long. 12 | SE21 - August 2018

Photo by Markus Spiske on Unsplash

7) Ideally put containers on saucers, or even something bigger to collect possible rainwater – as long as it’s not going to rain a lot, as they don’t want to drown! Putting plants on soaked capillary matting can also prevent them drying out too much. You could also consider investing in a selfwatering system for the garden and pots, which is attached to timer if you’re away for a while. 8) Any favourite plants can be planted into beds in the shade, to keep them cooler and stop them drying out. 9) If you have time, remove weeds before you go away – so much easier when they’re small. 10) If the forecast is for rain, remember to protect plants like hostas from slugs. 11) Mow the lawn a few days before you leave but don’t cut it too short if the weather is hot and dry – long grass copes much better with drought than short grass. Neaten up the edges to help it keep its shape for your return. 12) If you’ve been cultivating some vegetables, its Sod’s law they’ll all be ready just as you go away! Pick as many veg like runner beans and courgettes as you can and freeze them. Water fruit and veg thoroughly before you go and ideally persuade a friend to come and pick in return for watering. Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Peaches & Brioche Continuing our mission to create amazing dishes from home grown produce from our allotment…. or in this case peaches from the next plot (which we exchanged for our own Blackberries which we have in abundance)! Serves 4

Ingredients • 2 peaches (or nectarines) • 4 brioche slices • 150g Mascarpone • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out, pod reserved • 150g caster sugar, plus extra to taste • pinch Cinnamon • 50g Butter • 50ml double cream

Method 1) Bring a pan of water to the boil. Make a cross in the bottom of the peaches with the tip of a sharp knife, then place the peaches in the water and leave for 30 seconds. Drain, peel away the skin of the peaches and set aside. 2) Cut the fingers of brioche in half and toast them on a griddle pan until golden-brown. Remove from the heat and set to one side. 3) Mix together the mascarpone and vanilla seeds in a bowl, adding sugar, to taste. Set aside. 4) Heat a frying pan over a medium heat. Sprinkle the caster sugar over the base of the pan and allow it to melt and caramelise – do not stir the sugar, just shake the pan. Once the sugar has turned golden-brown and caramelised, carefully add the butter (the sugar may spit) and vanilla pod to the pan, stirring well.

5) Add the peaches to the pan, basting them with the caramel for a few seconds. Remove the peaches from the pan and set aside, then stir the cream into the remaining caramel in the pan. 6) To serve, place the brioche slices on a plate then top each with a peach, drizzle over the sauce and serve with a spoonful of vanilla mascarpone. Enjoy! Suzanne is a professional chef, white and mother who has lived in South East London all her life.

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

Tired all day & can’t sleep at night?

D

o you find that you’re tired all day, you don’t have the energy to get through the day, and then you hit the pillow and you can’t sleep? This is hugely frustrating and very common. What can you do about it? Firstly, let’s talk a bit about the autonomic nervous system, which is a part of the body that controls a lot of our autonomic movements like breathing. There are two branches to the autonomic nervous system, the sympathetic, which is your classic fight, flight, freeze, and your parasympathetic, which is your classic rest and digest. What we want to do as we move towards bedtime is move from sympathetic dominance into parasympathetic dominance so we’re ready for sleep, and the body has had time to wind down. One of the ways that you can do that would be to control the amount of caffeine that you have during the day. Depending on your sensitivity, two cups maximum in the morning is as much caffeine as you should really be taking in. Controlling the amount of daylight that you get exposed to is also important for your circadian rhythm. Getting out into natural light as soon as you wake up and getting as much natural light as you can throughout the day, whether it’s looking through a window, or better yet, getting out into the sunshine or into the natural light. By doing that, you also ensure you’re taking microbreaks away from your screens, which push out a frequency of light called blue light, which can suppress melatonin and it just takes you away from your work momentarily, which studies have shown improves productivity rather than losing you time. It’s also down to what you do to prepare yourself for the bed; you can do all these things during the day, but if you’re still thinking about work, are very stressed and in what we call a sympathetic dominant state before you go to bed, you’re going to struggle to sleep. Create

for yourself what we call a sleep staircase. It’s a metaphorical concept that takes you from sympathetic dominance, getting in from work, and down this set of metaphorical steps to bed at the bottom. For me, that’s changing into casual clothes. That’s a nice cue to the body that you’re winding down. I’ll do a to-do list of what’s not been captured today for tomorrow. I’ll put my devices on Do Not Disturb. I’ll put some blue light blocking glasses on to block out the blue light emitted from TV, screens and lights. I’ll eat a meal as early as possible, wind down throughout the evening so that by the time I get to bed, I’m relaxed and ready to sleep. If you find that you’re tired all day and wired at night, start looking at what you’re doing from the beginning of the day to the end, and where you can make modifications.

What If My Cat Becomes Deaf?

P

eople are reasonably familiar with the idea that deaf dogs can be trained with a range of non-verbal signals but cats that lose their hearing can also be taught to respond to hand, light and vibration cues. Cats that are born deaf naturally compensate to some degree as they learn about the world through the other senses that become heightened as a result. However, it is those cats that experience hearing loss in midlife or later that is the focus of this article. Surprisingly this apparently sudden partial or total deafness is not uncommon. It is also one of the reasons why older cats are more likely to get run over. Recently, while my sister was in hospital, I was tasked with caring for her handsome but elderly tabby cat. Until this point he had always come running up the garden if he was called, letting him know it was feeding time. But now there was no sign of him and often he would only turn up after I had been in my sister’s house for an hour or so. Once I got him inside, I soon noticed that if when he was eating his food I moved away to another room and then reappeared, he nearly jumped out of his skin. I decided to investigate. Choosing a time when he was relaxed I tried snapping my fingers behind his head and then rattled a bunch of keys. Not even an ear twitch! A visit to the vet confirmed hearing loss. We have no idea if this was sudden or whether his hearing declined over some time before reaching a critical point. Up close we think he can still hear very high pitched noises but mid and low range hearing have gone. At first and unsurprisingly my sister’s cat seemed distressed, yowling and shouting as if trying to ask why his world had changed so dramatically. Once my sister was back home and a normal routine restored, a couple of interventions soon raised his spirits. My sister decided to use finger and hand signals to communicate with him. Five fingers wiggled on the right hand meant food was coming. We started up close to his

Photo by Alexandru Zdrobau on unsplash.com

bowl, presenting his favourite grub after wiggling fingers at him. Very quickly we could wiggle fingers at distance and he would come running down the garden. A single index finger moved in tight circles would be used to say ‘hello’. Again, he has been so quickly responsive to this simple acknowledgement and seemingly relieved he is being ‘understood’- he was always a ‘chatty’ cat. This is just the beginning and we will try to build on the above by using vibration (lightly stamping to indicate you are about to approach, to avoid startling the cat). We will experiment with using light; turning lights on and off on darker nights can signal to the cat that you are in or indeed that it is feeding time. Other people have had success using laser light and getting the cat to follow the beam on the ground, guiding them to a particular space. Another top tip is to use scents and smells cats like, spritzing some cat nip or honeysuckle to signal your arrival. Cats have a highly developed sense of smell and learning to associate a signature scent with our presence can be helpful.

Financial Matters with David Frederick

Schools may be out but not the cost of uniforms

A

lice Cooper may be right and our children may be about to enjoy a well earned rest, but parents are already busy revising next term's school uniform list. It’s the summer ritual for most parents, and certainly all secondary schools in the London Borough of Southwark. The case for school uniform is well rehearsed. Similarly, the cries from parents about the rising cost of school uniforms has become an annual ritual. That voice was strengthened in November 2015 when, the then Chancellor, George Osborne, promised to make government guidance on school uniform legally binding, giving parents the power to challenge extortionate uniform requirements. The guidance required schools to make the cost of school uniform their priority and "keep compulsory branded items to a minimum". However politics doesn’t stand still and we got a new Chancellor before the guidance was made mandatory, and many schools do not even recognise this guidance. Schools have been able to continue their sole supplier arrangements for school uniform despite intervention from the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). The CMA concluded that these arrangements cost parents up to £10 extra per item of school uniform. It is not difficult to see how the additional costs to parents escalate, becoming a financial burden, especially for those with more than one child of school age needing a new uniform. Whilst the guidance may be effective it is somewhat difficult to understand the Department for Education claims that their guidance is clear and state, "when setting their uniform policies, schools should keep costs to a minimum and be affordable for everyone." It is no surprise that parents continue to fight back strategically in the battle over rising price of school uniforms. My savvy parent school uniform buying guide is as follows: 1) Parents should be aware that they do not have to buy everything from school's sole supplier. It is not compulsory. Consider supermarkets and alternative retailers for some core items especially the non-branded clothing.

28 | SE21 - August 2018

2) Parents should not buy their child everything on the list in preparation for their first day, irrespective of the school. It is not essential nor is it a statutory obligation. This can help parents to stay within their monthly budget and away from their credit cards and overdraft 3) Parents should review the school uniform list and decide what items are must haves on day one of next term. Parents will be surprised to find that a significant part of the list is not a must have on day one. 4) Parents should prioritise their purchases on a need-to-have items basis. Many schools don’t expect parents to purchase every item on their wish list. Check whether you have to buy the school cap? 5) Embrace pre-loved clothes. It’s not essential for all items to be brand new. If you have more than one child, the first uniform you invested in may be suitable for another term or more. Use your network, speak to other parents at your child’s school. Do they have any uniform they no longer use which could fit your children? If parents still find their budgets are still stretched, they may want to see if they qualify local authority support. The London Borough of Southwark is one of the few local authorities that still offer clothing grants for children aged 11 years old, who are moving from primary school to a secondary state or voluntary aided school. The grant is £45 and is available to parents or child carers who are in receipt of certain state benefits such as income support and universal credit. "Well, we got no choice" the opening line of Alice Cooper's hit, School's Out, seems to apply to parents buying school uniform. Irrespective of its truth, there are ways that parents can exercise control over how they spend their money.

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

125th Anniversary Year!

T

his year is the 125th anniversary of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club and throughout the year the club and supporters will be celebrating the occasion. For this season, the club have introduced a ‘new’ club crest to mark to occasion. Technically this is not a new crest in every sense of the word, it is actually an interpretation of the original used in the early part of the 20th century and it will appear on all team wear throughout the season. In recent years, Hamlet supporters have formed a close relationship with supporters of Hamburg club Altonaer FC von 1893. Altona 93, as it is more commonly known, was also formed in the year 1893 and so see’s it also celebrating its 125th anniversary this year. As part of both clubs celebrations Dulwich’s first team squad travelled to Hamburg a couple of weeks ago to play Altona 93 in a pre-season fixture at their Adolf-Jäger-Kampfbahn ground. Just under 200 Hamlet fans travelled over for the weekend, which also saw Dulwich face HFC Falke in another friendly a few days earlier. Dulwich ran out 4 -1 winners (not that the final result mattered) in a match witnessed by 1,093 spectators. This is the third meeting of the clubs, with the most recent fixture taking place at Champion Hill in July 2015. Ironically, the score for the first meeting of the clubs in Germany was a 4 - 1 win to The Hamlet! This season will finally see Dulwich Hamlet competing in the National League South. Throughout last season Dulwich challenge Billericay for the league title, but had to settle for promotion via the play-offs by wining the final at ‘home’ on penalties in front of 3,300 spectators. The community of SE22 is now well aware of the current situation of the team having to play away from its home in East Dulwich, the first season in the National Leagues will see the team continue to play at nearby Tooting and Mitcham’s ground. No progress, with getting the team back to Champion Hill, has been made with Meadow (the current owners of the land the stadium sits on) seemingly unwilling to budge unless Southwark Council agrees to their development proposals for Champion Hill stadium and the surroundings area. Following promotion, Gavin Rose and his coaching team have managed to

Hamlet player Nyrun Clunis receiving the trophy after the 4-1 victory against Altona 93 (altonaer fussball-club)

retain the majority of the squad from last season. A number of players have moved on, including a few fan favourites, but following several pre-season games the players brought in will certainly add some quality to the squad. The first league game of the season will see the team travel to local club Welling United on Saturday 4 August, with the first home fixture the following Wednesday evening. Admission prices for Home games for the 2018/19 season are; £12 adults, £5 concessions and under 13’s FREE.
