Hydrangeas For Impact Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

H

ydrangeas are gorgeous shrubs – their large blousy heads create abundance and colour into late summer, often taking on pinky hues in autumn, with dried seed heads adding winter structure too. They can be broadly categorised into two species, including Asian (paniculata and macrophylla) that prefer acid soil, some shade and moisture. For sunnier spots, opt for an American species such as the popular North American H. arborescens ‘Annabelle’, which can handle full sun and less water. Hydrangeas come in a vast range of colours, sizes and forms – from the globular mopheads to lacecaps with flatter heads of flowers. Here are a few to consider:

Hydrangea Macrophylla If the standard pink and blue mopheads (pink in alkaline and blue in acidic soil), conjure up an old fashioned image, opt for classic white varieties such as the flamboyant H. macrophylla ‘Madame Emile Mouillere’ or H. macrophylla ‘Zebra’ which has striking black stems. Otherwise, go for dramatic colours such as H. macrophylla ‘Westfalen’ with its large rich purple mophead blooms. Lovely lacecaps include subtle grey blue and white H. macrophylla ‘Veitchii’, or richly coloured ‘Rotchwanz’ with deep pink to wine-colored starry flowers.

Hydrangea Paniculata Hydrangea paniculata have long conical shaped flowers and add colour later in the season. Loose in habit, H. paniculata ‘Vanille Fraise’ has large creamy white flower heads turning shades of pale pink as they age. ‘ Pinky Winky’ is a slightly darker pink variety pointier flower heads. For more drama H. paniculata ‘Wim’s Red’ has scented flowers that start white and end up a rich red and ‘Limelight’ is a popular hydrangea with heads of lime-green flower. For smaller gardens, H. paniculata ‘Little Lime’, is a compact version, while ‘Kyushu’ has conicles of white flowers and a neat upright habit.

Hydrangea Arborescens Best loved is H. arborescens ‘Annabelle’ with huge globes of fresh lacy cream-coloured flowers. A new variety ‘Strong Annabelle’ has tougher stems. And now breeding has lead to varieties of H. arborescens in shades of pink including H. 12 | SE21 - August 2019

Photo by TOMOKO UJI on Unsplash

arborescens ‘Invincible Spirit,’ and the paler pink ‘Sweet Annabelle’ with flowers that soften to a delicious paler pink as the flowers fully open.

Hydrangea H. Quercifolia These are as much about the large lobed leaves that turn a dramatic pinky red, as flowers. ‘Snow Queen’ has large cones of white flowers and a spreading habit– perfect for woodland areas. ‘Snowflake’, has conical heads of delicate double white flowers in summer with fiery autumnal foliage colour.

Hydrangea Care Most hydrangeas like a sheltered position out of the wind, some shade and moisture – even H. arborescens such as ‘Annabelle’. Add plenty of organic material such as garden compost, when planting - in the summer tip a bucket of water over the roots about once a week. Feed with a slowrelease fertiliser or sprinkle blood, fish and bone in spring and early summer. If leaves are yellowing, water with liquid seaweed. In spring cut back flowering stems to within a few buds of the woody framework, then mulch. Staking with a fluted plant support in early spring will avoid them flopping - or bamboo canes tied gently to floppy steams will help keep plants upright. Companions: Dark dramatic purples and plums such as penstemon ‘Raven’ or Clematis ‘Black Prince’ contrast well with white hydrangea varieties. Or go for spire shaped perennials such as Veronicastrum virginicum ‘Album’, or perovskia ‘Blue Spire’. Underplant with Liriope muscari, Vinca minor or Geranium ‘Rozanne’.

Beef, Carrot & Chickpea Burgers

Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

S

chools out for summer! It’s time to celebrate with a good BBQ, and if you want to keep it healthy here is a great way to get children eating veggies and pulses without them even knowing! This is truly, absolutely my favourite burger recipe; I hope you like it too!

Ingredients • • • • • • • •

400g lean minced beef 500g carrots, peeled, finely grated and squeezed gently to dry them out a little A 425g tin of chickpeas 1 small onion, finely chopped 2 cloves garlic, grated 1” piece of fresh horseradish, grated 1 egg 1 tablespoon of olive oil

Method 1) Sweat the onion and garlic in a tablespoon of olive oil until softened. 2) Whizz together the chickpeas, carrot and egg in a blender until a thick paste is formed. Add the mince and mix thoroughly (preferably by hand). 3) Add the onions and garlic to the mix along with the grated horseradish. Use your hands to combine the mixture well. Season carefully. 4) Shape the mixture into 4 equal burgers, approximately 3cm thick 5) Ideally chill for at least an hour before cooking. 6) Fry in olive oil or brush with oil and place under the grill until golden and cooked through (10 to 12 minutes). 7) Serve in big buns with relish and lots of salad! Enjoy! Suzanne is a professional chef, wife and mother who has lived in South East London all her life.

Body Mass Index

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com What is Body Mass Index and should I be worried about it? I want to talk about some of the better alternatives to BMI. I’ve heard this number bounced around quite a bit. It stands for Body Mass Index, and it is an equation (based on height and weight) that is done to give you a rough indication of whether you are overweight, or underweight, or so on. If you are a very muscular person, your Body Mass Index is going to imply you are overweight, when usually that isn’t the case – it’s because you have got the dense muscle mass. So it’s not an accurate number, but that said, I’m not particularly keen on any number that you can apply to somebody’s body composition (which I think is a better way of describing things). Body composition is how your body is composed of water, muscle, fat, and bone. For most people, we want a little bit more muscle, and in some cases, quite a bit less fat, but body composition is the right term.

What am I a fan of? Look in the mirror. Be objective. Are you happy with what you see based on your own measurements, not some warped distortion of what you should look like that’s been propounded to you by the media, for example? Are you happy with how you feel? That’s probably the most critical subjective measure of all. Do you feel fit? Do you feel good? Do you feel happy based on your own personal standard? And of course, you can bounce off other people to get their perspective, but really, it’s about you and how you feel. My final measure that I’m really keen on is functional fitness. Can you do the things that you want to do? Can you climb the stairs in the time that you want to get up the stairs? Can you lift your shopping, lift your children, play with your children? Are you able to lift your suitcase off the carousal in an airport? If you can’t do any of those things, then your functional fitness is probably what you need to focus on. Rather than obsessing about a number, try to focus on your functional fitness, and focus on how you feel, focus to a degree on how you look 16 | SE21 - August 2019

– but not primarily. And as a final measure, the thing that never lies is an item of clothing. A jumper isn’t going to expand to make you feel better or shrink to really irritate you, so having a piece of clothing that you want to get back into can also be a good measure, because these things don’t change – if it’s too baggy or too tight, it’s you that has changed. But you must focus primarily on how you feel. You can check out my TEDx talk, Why Fitness Is More Important Than Weight, if you want to get a bit more on this idea.

Sharp Thinking Skills Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk

H

M at t N Alleyn eil, teache tells u ’s Junior S r at c ho sh sharp ow to enc ol, our a g think e in our ch g skills in ildren .

ow many uses are there for… a brick? I recently showed my form a picture of a house brick and asked them to think about different possible uses for it. The variety of responses was astonishing. Alongside the more obvious suggestions were a plethora of abstract and imaginative possibilities, including using it to squash (juice) fruit or heating it up to make a bed warmer! I asked this question to stimulate thinking skills. Learning lists of facts can be impressive but actually, knowledge-based learning techniques require the least amount of thought while good thinking challenges children to take their minds beyond what they already understand. Most children love the chance to think creatively and in doing so they will have to use more ‘brain power’. There are so many ways to do this:

Get Creative Encourage your child to invent a machine or a new product, design a building or a book cover, write a TV show, make up a new language code, compose a melody or make up new lyrics to their favourite song. The list of options is never-ending and they should all be fun!

Talk Giving your child the opportunity to speak and express themselves encourages them to think deeply and helps them to generate and explore ideas. Show them a thought-provoking image, and they will want to think and then ask their own questions. A piece of art is a great stimulus for you to interpret, discuss and possibly ask further questions together. Alternatively, why not share an ‘answer’ – perhaps a person, place or number – and ask what question would fit it?

Games Happily, playing games is one of the best ways to stretch your child’s thinking. These could include ‘odd one out’ style games, anagrams, hangman and riddles. A comparison game involves choosing three items, people or places and trying to find details that are either shared by all three or unique 24 | SE21 - August 2019

to each one. Another good game is the ‘Twenty Questions’ guessing game in which players ask ‘yes or no’ questions to close in on an answer, encouraging deductive reasoning and creativity.

Practical problem solving Why not involve your child when planning and organising a special event? For example, if you are planning a birthday celebration, involve them in the process, recording what steps you need to take and making the arrangements – it will encourage them to analyse options and make choices. Developing our children’s thinking skills is enjoyable and should never feel like hard work. Here is a popular ‘exercise’ you might try: ask your child which they would prefer - an invisibility cloak, a magic carpet or the ability to read minds?! Just by posing this question, allowing them to consider it and maybe justifying or refining their answer, you are giving your child a great ‘thinking skills’ workout.

Teaching your cat how to use a cat flap

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

M

ost cats will benefit from being able to use a cat flap but it is not unusual for early stages of training to founder. As with so many areas of animal training, the solution lies in trying to see everything from the animal’s perspective. Remember, where cats are concerned we are talking about a relatively solitary animal that values its territory and space.

Choosing a cat flap An obvious point but do look at how large your cat is or ask about the size of your kitten’s parents. Some cats will need a dog flap. There are a number of reputable brands out there, so do shop around. The proper height of the cat flap should align with the distance of your cat’s belly to the floor.

Installation Try to put your cat flap in a relatively protected area or place plant pots and similar either side of the cat flap outside the house. When looking through the cat flap cats are unable to scan for predators or ambush by rival cats and this can make them nervous to go outside. A screen either side of the cat flap will help your cat feel more confident. Before showing your cat the apparatus make it feel more familiar by rubbing his scent all around it, especially through any entrance or tunnel areas (use a cloth and rub first around his cheeks and then onto the cat flap).

Training do and don’ts • Do arm yourself with lots of high value kitty treats and prepare to be patient. Missing a meal before training may help puss’ appetite for treats. • If your cat is not food orientated try pulling a favourite toy on a string through the open cat flap • Don’t push your cat through the cat flap in order to register the microchip- registration can wait until later and will occur naturally once your cat walks through the cat flap • Don’t sit, stare and try to entice your cat through from the other side of the cat flap- you look predatory and confrontational

Photo by Mona Magnussen on Unsplash

• Do break down training into tiny stages, rewarding any brief investigation of the cat flap • If a click noise is triggered by the microchip do first focus on rewarding the cat’s attention to this noise, until they cease to be startled by the sound • First use string to prop the cat flap wide open (don’t use pens or pencils as these can easily dislodge, startling the cat, we want to keep any associations with the cat flap positive) • It may be best to work from the outside to inside first as your cat will be more motivated to get back into the security of the home • With the flap wide open place a trail of treats up to the entrance and wait. Praise and reward any investigation • Continue to reward further investigation- be patient. Once your cat seems more confident, tossing a few treats through the open flap may encourage him to go through • The next stage is to start again with the flap half way down and then systematically lower the flap, rewarding the cat’s interest at each stage until the door is closed. • The final stage is when the cat has enough confidence to push the flap open without help SE21 - August 2019 | 25

Financial Matters

With David Frederick FCCA | Marcus Bishop Associates | marcus-bishop.com

Court of Protection fee reduction helps new deputies Over 800,000 carers across the country are caring for a family member who no longer has mental capacity to make their own decisions. Despite the applause for such caring individuals, their sense of duty or service comes with a price. A significant proportion of these carers encounter the twin challenges of changes in family relationships and in many cases physical and psychological health issues. Perhaps it is against this background there was some good news for new carers applying to the Court of Protection (CoP) to become the ‘deputy’, to take over the financial and welfare responsibilities of loved ones who no longer have the mental capacity to make their own decisions. Under current legislation, when a person lacks mental capacity to make their own decisions another person may apply to the Court of Protection to become their deputy (the court approved responsible person) for their affairs. There are two types of deputyship that deputies may apply for: i) Property and financial affairs, and ii) Personal welfare. The former concerns the financial management of an individual’s affairs, plus the annual reporting of their financial affairs to the Office of the Public Guardian (OPG). The annual reporting should be undertaken from the full accounting records that has been maintained by the deputy. The latter concerns making decisions pertaining to an individual’s medical welfare and well-being. An individual may have lost their mental capacity as a result of learning disabilities, dementia or have acquired debilitating brain injury. Pre 22nd July 2019 £

Court of Protection Fees 30 | SE21 - August 2019

Despite a common misunderstanding and/or myth, responsibility is not conferred upon an alleged or deemed next of kin as a legal right. This is irrespective of the relationship between the adult who has lost mental capacity and the party deemed to be their next of kin. A deputyship can only be obtained through an application to the Court of Protection. Gradually, many next of kin parties are beginning to realise this, when they attempt to undertake financial transactions on behalf of family members who have suffered a loss of mental capacity. The application process involves the completion of several detailed forms by the applicants for deputyship plus the payment of a fee to the Court of Protection. Whilst, it has become fashionable for individuals to become do-it-yourself experts in all spheres of their lives with or without any a priori knowledge or experience, deferring to the new font of all knowledge, the internet. This is one facet of life where caution should be exercised even before witnessing the bundle of application forms. From 22nd July 2019, the Court of Protection application fees to become a deputy has been reduced by 5%, to £365. This follows on from a reduction of 3.75% last year. The court appeal fee has also been cut by 28%. This reflects a 42.5% fee reduction over the last two years. The third fee revision was the 3% reduction in the court hearing fee. This is the fee payable to the court, if a court hearing is deemed necessary. These combined reduction in fees may serve as a reflection of a public policy to widening access. Despite these welcomed reductions in the entry fees to obtaining a deputyship, there has been no corresponding changes to the fee for the annual financial report to the OPG. Prospective and existing deputies should note that they may be able to apply on behalf of their client to the OPG for either a 50% remission of fees or 100% exemption of deputy fees. However, all applications for fee remissions and exemptions are subject to the financial status of the client.

uring the close season, there have been dramatic changes to the squad at Dulwich Hamlet with only a handful of those featuring last season remaining. After the pre-season games, the team looks very strong and should be looking to challenge for a top table, in not play-off, finish at the end of the 20192020. Pre-season featured home matches against a Tottenham Hotspur and Crystal Palace XI as well as a mini tour of the North West with games against Chester and Marine (Liverpool). There have also been a number of significant changes off the pitch during the summer period, which included adding to the already existing terracing on three sides of the ground. Whilst plans have recently been submitted for the clubs proposed new stadium, it has been recognised the importance that these works are needed to be done to ensure everyone gets a great match day experience at the current stadium at Champion Hill. The most exciting pieces of news this summer was the announcement that from this season the club will also be fielding a Women’s team with their home fixtures taking place on Sunday afternoons. Previously playing under the name of AFC Phoenix, Dulwich Hamlet Women’s FC will play in the London and South East Premier Division after narrowly missing out on promotion last season. AFC Phoenix were Established in 2010 with all the committee members being either ex players, coaches or current players and boasts a squad comprised of 10 nationalities. The club have been self sustained until now, however after successful meetings with DHFC, a merger was agreed, paving the way for the first fully fledged DHFCW squad. Captain Brittany Saylor said: “We are thrilled to become a part of the Dulwich family. The club ethos and community support along with the talent and dedication of our girls is a definite recipe for success. We’re looking forward to continuing our accomplishments under the Dulwich name” The Team play their final two home pre-season friendly fixtures at Champion Hill. The visitors on the 4 August will be Crystal Palace, with the final game taking place against Crawley on 11 August. Full season fixtures can be found on the official club website. In early July the Trust held its Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the club bar. The Chair’s report highlighted that 12 months ago, Football Club’s

position was desperate and having to play our ‘home’ fixtures at Tooting was causing immense financial pressure and uncertainty with regards of the future of Dulwich Hamlet. The report continued to address the members present by adding that since then, while uncertainty continues in some respects, the situation has improved considerably. For those not aware, the Supporters’ Trust has contributed to this improvement, in part by investments in the Club in return for shares. £18,000 was in 2018, and more recently, the club received a further £40,000 investment. It was also highlighted, at the meeting, that one of the Trust’s Objectives for the past year was to increase shareholding and representation in the football club, with a long-term vision of ownership of the Club. In the past 12 months the Board have being working very hard to increase the Supporters’ Trust’s shareholding, of the club, to approximately 20%. In addition, the Trust have now secured two seats on the Football Club Board.

Future fixtures at Champion Hill • Tuesday 6 August 19:45 – Wealdstone • Saturday 10 August 15:00 – St Albans City • Saturday 17 August 15:00 – Concord Rangers • Monday 26 August – Slough Town
