Heavenly Helebores For Early Colour Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
T
he pure white helebores I have in my front garden, shooting up in January from the bare soil are such a joy, making me feel spring is on the way. Helebores come in a gorgeous range of subtle hues from whites and pale apple greens to dusky pinks and deep inky purples, lighting up your garden from now to spring. There are also a few peachy coloured helebores and fancier varieties with double petals or stunning markings. The best way of choosing a flower you love is to buy it now while it’s in bloom. For most impact, group at least three together in the front garden, by a path, or where you can see them from a window on a cold day. Apart from the more sun tolerant varieties, helebores like dappled shade, so planting them in drifts under a deciduous tree or large shrub for summer shade is ideal. They look great inter-mingled with snowdrops and cyclamen or other shade lovers such as ferns or Liriope muscari, as well as underplanting late winter flowering shrubs such as sarcococca and Vibernum tinus. Prune off last year’s old foliage in Janurary to show off the new buds and flowers as they grow and deadhead if you want to avoid them self-seeding.
Your Guide To Helebore Varieties To Try Helleborus x hybridus (H. orientalis) Flowering from Feb to April, this is a popular hellebore with large dark green leaves and a wonderful range of flowers from from the deep pinky/red ‘Havington Red’ to the striking soft yellow ‘Yellow Lady’ with maroon speckling. The dark plum varieties such as ‘Single Dusky Grape’ (Ashwood Garden Hybrids) look great offset with snowdrops or bright blue Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. They like partial shade. 45cm H
Helleborus niger Also known as the Christmas rose, this is a dainty white hellebore with yellow stamens and low growing leathery evergreen foliage. It’s great for containers and one of the earliest to flower (Jan to Feb). Likes partial shade. (30cm H) 12 | SE21 - February 2020
Photo by Annie Spratt on Unsplash
H. foetidus Another large architectural variety with masses of bell shaped pale green flowers with purple edges (Jan – April) above clumps of palm like dark green leaves. It likes partial shade. Tall at up to 80cm.
H. argutifolius This larger more sculptural helebore is a fabulous foliage plant with handsome serrated evergreen leaves that’ll give your garden evergreen interest and structure all year roud. The pale green clusters of flowers in pendants are in bloom from Janurary to March. Looks great with pink-red flowers of Pulmonaria rubra. Likes full sun or or partial shade. (50cm H)
H. ‘Penny’s Pink’ This is a real show-stopper (part of the Rodney Davey marbled group) has large flowers from late winter to mid-spring above the silver-marbled foliage. Anna’s Red’ is named after Anna Pavord is also bred by Rodney Davey, with masses of reddy purple flowers on dark stalks with marbled foliage. Happiest in partial shade, and flowering from February to April,. (50cm H).
H. x sternii More sun tolerant than most, this is a striking hellebore as much for its marbled silvery foliage as the pretty clusters of pink tinged green flowers (Feb – March). ‘Silver Dollar’ is a stunning variety with steely silver serrated leaves – best in containers in a sunny sheltered position. 40cm. Helleborus lividus is similar but less hardy with wonderful marbled bluish green leaves and clusters of pink-tinged apple green flowers (Jan – March). Ideal in a large container in a sheltered semi shady pot with well-drained soil (35cm H)

252 million years ago, in a period called the Permian, life on Earth was dominated by extraordinary creatures. It was a time of fearsome sabre-toothed predators, giant insects and bizarre-looking sharks. The Permian ended with a mass extinction that destroyed 90% of all life, paving the way for the Earth’s next great rulers… the dinosaurs. In this fascinating, family-friendly exhibition, which is travelling to the UK for the first time, you can discover more about this mysterious time period. On display will be fossil skeletons as well as full-size models and animatronics that bring the Permian back to life. You can also sift through interactive dig pits and get creative in an art area. A relaxed opening for families who are unable to visit when the Horniman is busy will take place on Thursday 16 April, 9–10am. For more information, please see the Special Events section. In addition, look out for Permian Monsters activities during the school holidays. Permian Monsters: Life Before the Dinosaurs is a travelling exhibition produced by Gondwana Studios. Tickets*: Child £5, Adult £9, Family (up to two adults and two children) £20. Horniman Members and Benefactors enjoy free, unlimited entry. *Prices include a voluntary Gift Aid donation which helps support the work of the Horniman. 24 | SE21 - February 2020

Residential Property Disposal: Capital Gains Tax Overhaul
A
pril 6 2020 brings a new dawn for residential property owners disposing of property and the payment of any capital gains tax liability. Three new changes are being introduced simultaneously: (i) the abolition of letting relief; (ii) the reduction in the period of private residence]relief; and (iii) the payment of capital gains tax within 30 days. The combined effect of these three changes will increase the amount of capital gains tax (CGT) liabilities to owners of residential properties. In addition, there will be new and additional reporting to HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC). The introduction of the 30 days payment period will present the greatest challenge hence this is our primary focus. This is a radical shift from the current capital gains tax (CGT) regime. At present taxpayers have a maximum of 22 months to pay their CGT subject to the disposal date. However from 6th April 2020, the payment period is reduced to 30 days from the date of disposal of the residential property. Consequently the reporting and payment of CGT now moves outside of the self-assessment system and becomes a separate report of capital gains.
CGT Reporting 6 April 2020 The disposal of any UK land on which a residential property gain accrues requires a return to be submitted to HMRC within 30 days of disposal. The declaration requires the separate reporting of the transaction details plus a declaration by the reporting party, with an express statement that the return is to the best of their knowledge “correct” and “complete”. Amendments may be made to the CGT reported to HMRC. However, any amendment can only relate to events that had already occurred at the date the return was submitted. 28 | SE21 - February 2020
A report will not be required if a disposal of residential property results in the due and payable CGT liability being nil.
CGT Payment CGT was traditionally paid as part of the selfassessment tax process. However, from 6th April 2020, the payment of CGT is being advanced from the current 31st January deadline. CGT due on any residential property disposal must be calculated and paid to HMRC within 30 days of the disposal. The CGT payment will be a CGT payment on account for the year as the final CGT liability computation will be undertaken as usual within the selfassessment process. The new regime will continue to leave home owners disposing of their principal private residence unaffected. However, the increasing number of buy to let landlords will be directly affected. There may be some material impact upon parties engaged in divorce and/or separation, and UK home owners working away from home and/or overseas. Therefore advice should be sort at the earliest opportunity.
Letting Relief At present if the owner of a residential property disposes of a property which was at once their main residence but it had been rented out, they are likely to be entitled to a maximum of £40,000 ‘letting relief’ on disposal of their residential property. From 6th April 2020, the owner will no longer be entitled this relief unless the owner was resident during the period of letting out their property. As a consequence, the maximum additional CGT to be incurred by a basic income tax rate home owner is £7,200 and for higher rate tax payers is £11,200.
Period of Private Residence Relief At present the last 18 months of ownership of the property are treated as qualifying for principal private residence. From 6th April 2020 only the last 9 months of ownership will qualify for principal private residence. All taxpayers disposing of residential property from 6th April 2020 will need to be more attentive to their CGT reporting responsibilities.

Monthly Event Spotlight Melissa Hemsley from 'Eat Green' Fridge-Raid Frittata Feeds 4, takes 20 mins The beauty of a frittata is that anything goes – really, it does! In this case, broccoli is the star, but let whatever is in your fridge take the lead. Always aim for some green as it’s often the green veg that most of us could do with more of. Not only is a vegetable frittata an easy and delicious way to start your day, but in this case you eat the whole broccoli in all its glory – stems and stalks – and, even better, everything happens in the same pan. If you’ve got cooked broccoli ready to go, then skip step 1 and save time. And if you know you’ll be rushing out the door a lot this week, bake it in a 12hole muffin tray at fan 170°C/Gas mark 5 for 10–15 minutes for a grab-and-go breakfast or snack.
INGREDIENTS • • • • • •
1 large head of broccoli, florets evenly chopped and stem finely chopped 1 small onion, thinly sliced 2 garlic cloves, thinly sliced 2 tbsp butter 10 eggs 2 large handfuls of grated cheese (I use mature Cheddar or you could use crumbled feta or goat’s cheese)
OPTIONAL EXTRAS • • • •
A handful of chopped fresh basil, parsley, chives or celery leaves Chilli flakes, to taste 2 handfuls of wild garlic, chopped (when in season) Sea salt and black pepper
METHOD 1) Grab a medium-sized, deep-sided frying pan and steam the broccoli for 3 minutes in about 4 tablespoons of water, lid on, until almost tender and just turned bright green. Drain any excess liquid (though the broccoli will probably absorb it all) and set the broccoli aside. 2) Pop the pan back on the heat and gently fry the red onion rings and garlic in the butter for a few minutes. 30 | SE21 - February 2020
3) Meanwhile, whisk the eggs together in a bowl, add salt, pepper and the cheese, plus any of the herbs, chilli flakes or wild garlic, if using. 4) Preheat the grill to high. Add the broccoli back to the pan to coat in the garlic but-ter, then pour in the egg mix, stirring so that the broccoli and onions are distributed evenly. Let the bottom and sides cook and start to set over a medium heat for about 5 minutes. 5) Pop the frittata under the grill for a further 5 minutes until golden on top and just cooked through (give the pan a wobble to check), then slide it onto a chopping board or plate. Cool for 10 minutes and slice up into quarters.
WASTE NOT This is divine with cauliflower too and tastes a bit like cauliflower cheese. The day I handed in this book, I made a celebratory clear-out-the-fridge frittata with 2 big handfuls of chopped mushrooms, shredded cabbage, 1 tablespoon of leftover cream, ¼ onion and a big pinch of fresh thyme leaves. It was delicious and too good to not share here. Melissa will be at Bell House, 27 College Road, Dulwich, SE21 7BG. on February 12th to talk about her new book 'Eat Green'. A Unique Perspective Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Elisabeth Sarr, teacher at Alleyn’s Junior School, tells us how to encourage a love of Geography in our children.
G
eography helps children gain a better understanding of our world’s people, places and environments, understand how and why places change, and imagine and predict what the future might hold - and living in London offers our children a unique perspective to help them gain that understanding. As you travel around our city with your child, the conversations you have can develop their understanding and offer them a lens through which to look at the world. Here are some suggestions to get those conversations started: Hop on a bus: Many bus routes begin in our local area and wind their way through numerous neighbourhoods. Looking from the windows will reveal a diverse world, both in the buildings and the Londoners who inhabit them. Look at that view: Telegraph Hill or Honour Oak’s One Tree Hill offer great vantage points to see London – what landmarks can you see? You might see the weather rolling in, or pollution hanging over the city, all of which are great talking points you could expand on to develop your child’s understanding of the world. Making several visits at different times will enable you to contrast what you see. Visit a park: We are spoilt for choice with Dulwich Park, Brockwell Park and Peckham Rye all nearby. Use the maps at the park entrances to navigate round. Can your child pinpoint where you are? Identify where you want to go and use the map to get there. Look at the landscape - what can you see?

Explore diverse London: There are many places in London that show the vibrancy of the many cultures that co-exist in our city. Peckham’s Rye Lane is one nearby example - it is a thriving centre for London’s African (and particularly Nigerian Yoruba) community. Take a trip down the Lane to see all the colourful fabrics and delicious foods. Centre for Wildlife Gardening: You will find this fantastic centre run by the London Wildlife Trust on the borders of East Dulwich. Here you can investigate a range of ecosystems and learn to record your results. The website has a range of wildlife surveys your child can participate in. World Gallery: Visit the Horniman Museum, which hosts many wonderful exhibitions, as well as holding its own collections. The World Gallery contains artefacts from cultures spanning the continents, which will spark your child’s imagination. The gardens also offer wonderful views of London. Plan routes: When using public transport, discuss any maps you see. Encourage your child to plan your journey or suggest alternative routes and they will become accustomed to navigating the city and beyond. Using our local area as a springboard is an excellent way to cultivate a child happy to explore and understand the vibrant and exciting world around them as well as further afield.
