The Dulwich Literary festival takes its theme from the Anthony Trollope novel The Way We Live Now. First published in book form in 1875, Trollope’s novel was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s. The author had returned to England from Australia and sought to express his shock and disgust at the extent to which greed and corruption had become systemic in the spheres of politics, commerce, journalism and diplomacy. In 2016, as the world trains its gaze towards the centenary of the Russian Revolution of 1917, it seems fitting to re-examine Trollope’s exposé of British society, rich in satire and drama, and to compare and contrast it to how we live today. With some of UK’s bestknown names in politics, fiction, poetry and history on the adult programme, there is also have a series of children’s events to entertain and delight

Fireside Fun

t is that time of year when we move the party indoors and start to cocoon with family and friends, as the evenings get longer and the fire becomes ever more tempting. Having spent the summer flitting from one social event to another the winter provides a comforting sanctuary where the only pressure is to relax and enjoy the company. In front of the fire the conversation flows and friends we have known for years become even greater ones. It is for those very evenings that it is always a good idea to have a few icebreakers on the back burner – it never a good idea to too heavily grill a new guest – and sometimes even the closet groups need a little conversational inspiration, especially if the alcohol is flowing too. A favourite game of mine I played in my youth and is one our friends used to call ‘Machiavelli’ – presumably as the founder of modern political science was one of the hardest subjects to guess. When checking online to see if we were playing by the standard recognised rules I found no mention of it, instead it seems to be called now the rather less glamorous Post-it Note Game. In, and on, my head it will remain ‘Machiavelli’. At the start of the game players write the name of a famous personality, alive or dead, on a Post-it Note and apply it to the forehead of the person sitting next to them. One player starts by asking a question to which the response may only be ‘yea’ or ‘no’. The usual first starter is ‘am I alive?’ Questions are asked until the answer is ‘no’ at which stage the next player starts. The scope for hilarity is huge and the opportunities for a little subtle leg pulling are enormous; but like your Whiskey Sour, it is probably best taken with a pinch of salt.

And for that time of the evening when even the thought of trying to remember the name of that existential philosopher or the dead dog from EastEnders fills you with horror, then a simple game of Wink Murder will stop the party flagging. A number of folded Post-it Notes equal to the number of guests are placed in a hat (why do we always say hat, has anyone ever been anywhere where an actual hat had been used? In fact, it would be most odd if anyone suddenly produced one halfway through a soiree). The Post-it Notes are all blank apart from one, which nominates the recipient as the detective. Players must subversively wink at their victims without detection. It’s not quite as suspenseful as an episode of The Fall but it has its merits and its plays out a lot quicker.

Whiskey Sour 50 ml of whiskey, 25 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice, half a teaspoon of sugar, an egg white and a pinch of salt. Shake all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and pour into a tumbler filled with ice. Serve with a slice of orange. 12 | SE21 - November 2016

Chilli Con Carne A fantastic alternative to traditional chilli. Serves 4

Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

1 tbsp oil 1 large onion 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground cumin 500g lean minced beef 1 beef stock cube/ home made stock 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 tsp sugar 2 tbsp tomato puree 400g red kidney beans 400 diced chorizo

Serve with Soured Cream, Guacamole, Tortilla Chips, Jacket Potatoes, or Brown Rice.

Method Prepare your vegetables; Dice 1 large onion, Cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. Peel and finely chop 2 garlic cloves. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions & the Chorizo and cook, stirring fairly frequently until the onions are soft, squidgy and slightly translucent. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, one heaped teaspoon hot chilli powder or one level tablespoon mild chilli powder, one teaspoon paprika and one teaspoon ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Brown the 500g lean minced beef. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, mince-sized lumps and there are no more pink bits. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew. Crumble one beef stock cube or use homemade stock into 300ml hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open one 400g can of 14 | SE21 - November 2016

chopped tomatoes and add these as well. Tip in ∞ teaspoon dried marjoram and 1 teaspoon sugar, if using and add a good shake of salt and pepper. Add about two tablespoons of tomato purée and stir the sauce well. Simmer gently. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir the mixture and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan, and also that it isn’t drying out. Add some water if it is catching. After simmering gently, the mixture should look thick, moist and juicy. Drain and rinse one 410g can of red kidney beans in a sieve and stir them into the chilli pot. Euphorbia euphoria

've grown to appreciate euphorbias more and more. Their slightly exotic-looking foliage adds strong evergreen structure to a garden, but it’s their brilliant lime green flowers in spring and early summer that really wow and look amazing with purples and blues. There are many varieties to choose from, whether for height or ground cover, sun or shade. Here’s my pick of the best.

I The biggies E. mellifera. This is perfect if you want a bold architectural plant in your garden – it reaches up to 2m. The attractive bright green evergreen leaves are complemented in spring by rusty orange, honey-scented flowers (mellifera is Latin for honey- bearing). Try it with large leaved plants for an exotic look or bold pinks, oranges or reds. It likes full sun or partial shade.

E. x pasteurii This is a good choice if you want something with the virtues of mellifera – exotic long leaves, (though slightly darker green) as well as orangey flowers in early summer, but in a more compact form.

E. characias wulfenii You see this euphorbia a lot, and it’s popular for a reason. It’s has a useful upright shape, with tall stems of grey green leaves providing year interest that look great with silvers and purples. In early spring it has fabulous billowing lime green flowers that perfectly complement purple plants such as Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ or alliums. Sun loving and drought tolerant once established it’s perfect for a Mediterranean-style garden. E. characias ‘Black Pearl’ with dark black eyes in the middle of yellow flower heads is a more unusual option, or for a more silvery colour-scheme try E. characias 'Silver Swam' with a white leaf margins and mainly white flowers.

sunny border and will tolerate part shade. It looks amazing with blues, such as Iris ‘Jane Phillips’ or Salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’.

E. ceratocarpa This is another euphorbia to add zingy acid green to the garden throughout the summer – March to July.

E. x martini What’s striking about this euphorbia are the redeyed flowers from March until late June, which can be picked out with other dark red/pink early flowering perennials such as aquilegia.

III Shade lovers E. amygdaloides var. robbiae Fab for brightening up a shady spot, this low growing (60cm) euphorbia is one of the earliest to flower, with dark glossy green leaves and fresh lime green flower that look great with ferns or early flowering geraniums such as ‘Brookside’. It’s useful ground cover for a tricky spot, but can be a bit invasive, so keep an eye on it.

E. amygdaloides ‘Purpurea’ This variety also has dark glossy leaves and bright green flowers in early spring but with crimson stems. It’s also a low growing shade lover.

A word of warning The stems have a milky sap that can be a skin irritant, so wear gloves and long sleeves. Wash off immediately if you do get some on your hands. Euphorbias do have a tendency to spread or self seed - some more than others, but they’re easy enough to weed. All part of the plant are highly toxic so avoid if you have pets and be aware if you have small children.

First published in book form in 1875, Trollope’s novel was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s. Our home: castle or the new cash cow?

n 1604, Sir Edward Coke declared “your house is your castle and fortress”. However today Sir Edward would not recognise the modern approach to our home. It has often been muted that British households have millions of pounds behind the sofa as a result of loose change. The loose change is no longer our focus. In many cases the doors of our sacred castle has been flung wide open. Five current examples of the new open castle psychology are as follows: • Supper clubs • Airbnb • TV filming • Home tuition • Hire of drive Supper clubs are pop-up home based restaurants. Many operate on a monthly basis or whatever works best for the homeowner. Some operators charge a set fee for a three, four or five course meal. Whereas, other operators ask guests to leave a donation. In recent years supper clubs have increased in popularity at least in the SE region. Dulwich is home to at least one thriving supper club. People have always rented out their spare rooms to friends and strangers alike. However, the birth of Airbnb has resulted in many homeowners with spare rooms marketing their spare room on Airbnb. Whilst there is scope for wider marketing this must be balanced with the additional fees incurred from using such a service. The recent increase in the rent a room scheme from £4,250 to £7,500, will continue to make this an attractive income source. Some homeowners have managed to generate additional income by letting their home to television companies for filming. Homeowners within desirable postcodes and/or with particular features are often able to command higher fees. Television filming crews often require access to properties from 8am. Such an early start may present a challenge to homeowners with daily ditherers. Moreover filming may span one or more days. The provision of home tuition for academic subjects and musical instruments has become a popular income source for suitably qualified homeowners.

In addition to possessing the necessary qualifications, skillsets and aptitude for knowledge transfer, homeowners must hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. An emergent source of home income in recent years has seen homeowners hiring out their driveway for daily parking. This has become extremely popular in some neighbourhoods as local authorities have made on street parking more restrictive. Some home owners within close proximity to railway stations have found this to be a lucrative source of income. Homeowners should always exercise due care and attention when seeking to use their home to generate a source of income. All that glitters is not gold. If you are an existing tenant before seeking to harness your entrepreneurial skills, check the terms of your tenancy agreement and always seek the consent of your landlord. There is often a range of existing legislation to comply with before embarking on any home based income generating opportunity. Therefore, before leaping into that new home based venture always ensure it is legally compliant from the start. History has shown that it is often more costly to resolve the problem as a result of free entry. For example, supper clubs have to comply with a range of food and hygiene legislation. An often overlooked area is the small matter of public liability insurance. Whilst at the same time it is necessary to review and check the impact and or implications for your household insurances. Whatever prospective income generation scheme homeowners wish to pursue it is advisable to seek professional accounting, taxation and legal advice before taking the plunge. Opening the door to your house may be an invitation to more than just the opportunity to generate some additional income.

Keeping fit while travelling Seven ways to maintain a healthy routine even when you’re travelling

#4 – decide what you’ll compromise on and what you won’t

It’s the lament of many; how do I maintain my fitness and stick to my routine when I’m travelling? Airport lounges, the endless waiting around, delays, airplane food, unhealthy snacks at conferences, the plentiful pastries over breakfast can scupper our good intentions and break our routine. It doesn’t have to be that way though. There’s a lot you can do to stay active even in a tiny hotel room, and a bit of planning and preparation can help you stay on track with your nutrition. Eating away from home inevitably requires some compromise. You’ll be offered meals you wouldn’t normally eat, rich foods you might ordinarily avoid, 3 courses where 1 would do, and potentially more alcohol. Make a list of what you’ll allow yourself to have and what you definitely won’t.

#1 – get a good workout in before you go

If you have a trip coming up, step up your exercise levels the week before. A long flight can be stressful if you’re antsy and fidgety but if your muscles are happily tired, it can become an opportunity to rest and recover, enjoy a movie or two and do some reading

#2 – have a good healthy meal before you leave the house This might be the last healthy meal you have for a little while so make it count. Cook something you really enjoy, but that contains plenty of high-quality plant or animal protein combined with healthy fats and lots of vegetables.

#3 - plan your journey from front door to destination Think about the journey and what snacks you’ll need to pack. A small bag of nuts and seeds, dried fruit or fruit can be packed into small disposable containers, and will provide you with a hit of energy when needed. 26 | SE21 - November 2016

#5 – make sure you’ve got healthy options once you arrive Before you leave or failing that, when you arrive at your destination, google a health food shop or decent store in the area and buy more healthy snacks. You can take these to your meetings instead of the standard biscuits and pastries they provide

Check if the curtains are blackout and if not try and minimise the light that comes in. Turn off the TV and clock radio before you sleep. Put a towel under the door to block out the light from the hallway, and move your mobile phone where you can’t reach it. Finally, pack lavender oil to sprinkle on your pillow.

#7 – plan your exercise routine in advance Look at your schedule to see where you could fit in a run. Take the stairs instead of lifts or escalators. Stand where you can. Here’s an example of a full body workout that you can do in a small hotel room in under 30 minutes: 20 star jumps and 10 bodyweight squats to warm up. 10 press ups into 10 running squats (3-5- sets) Burpees Tabata / Squats Tabata / Plank Tabata. For our autumn concert, the Concordia Chamber Choir is proud to bring together, in exciting combination, two composers of the first rank. One is a household name, the other slightly lesser known; one from the 18th century, the other still alive in the 21st. What links Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt is their miraculous musical interpretations of the scriptures. The first half of the concert will feature several of Pärt’s dynamic, contemporary religious pieces including a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis; the second is taken up with Bach’s unique, magisterial Magnificat in which the choir will have the great pleasure of being accompanied by the South Circular Orchestra. We hope you’ll be able to join us for an evening of soaring beauty and deep spirituality which will confirm, once again, Concordia’s reputation as one of south London’s most prestigious choirs. Performed at the beautiful All Saints Church, Lovelace Road, West Dulwich, SE21, the DSO’s autumn/winter concert on Saturday 26th November, at 7pm features no less than three symphonies, presenting a master-class in this ambitious musical form. The orchestra’s conductor, Leigh O’Hara says, “This concert features three very different symphonies. The ‘Haffner’; is a short but important work in Mozart's output and one of his most joyous. Brahms is a composer that the orchestra hasn't tackled for a while and his dramatic first symphony could be

dubbed Beethoven’s tenth, an obvious influence. These two symphonies will be a fascinating contrast with Sibelius' seventh and last, which is a single movement work and one of the greatest symphonic conceptions.” For our Summer 2017 concert we are proud to announce that the DSO will be hosting a fundraising Gala concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of St.Christopher’s Hospice by Dame Cicely Saunders.
