Herne Hill Music Festival Friday 7 – Sunday 16 October: Plans for the next Music Festival are taking shape, and the programme offers local people the usual range of music from jazz, folk, and blues, to family and children’s concerts and classical music. Innovations this year range from Mozart’s Don Giovanni performed by Dulwich Opera Company, a family concert of Indian Classical music in Brockwell Hall as part of our Music in the Park on Sunday 9th Oct, to performances by rising Jazz stars at Off The Cuff, and Fiddling the Night Away with folk fiddlers at Canopy Beer.

Friday 7 October: MIKE COOPER, You Are Wolf, Long Pike Hollow – The Ivy House Mike Cooper is coming over from Italy specially for this concert, which is an addition to our regular schedule. An influential slide guitarist in the sixties, Mike has since developed a unique eclectic style, ranging freely through improvisation, his own idiosyncratic original songs, electro-acoustic music, exotica, traditional country blues, folk, pop songs and extended guitar techniques and electronics. You Are Wolf and Long Pike Hollow both also use experimental and improvisational voice and instrumental techniques, but in quite different ways. he worst mistake anyone can make at any domestic drinks party is to try to run a professional cocktail bar. Spirits will be used at different rates making it almost impossible to meet your guests’ requests and you will spend all night mixing and shaking, if not running to the shops. Instead invite friends over and serve a particular pre-planned cocktail, together with several choices for non-drinkers, they are often forgotten. One drink which is is almost impossible to get wrong is the ever so glamorous Negroni. Finding myself lucky enough to be seated very recently in the very bar were the drink was invented I decided, with its orangery hue, that this was the perfect autumnal aperitif and my cocktail of choice for the coming months. Count Camillo Luigi Manfredo Maria Negroni was born in Florence in 1868, he was a maverick nobleman who swapped the rolling hills of Tuscany for the barren landscape of the Wild West, where he lived the horse-back cowboy life. Presumably his drinking habits became hardened by the extreme frontier life and upon returning to Florence in 1919 he asked Fosco Scarselli, bartender at Café Casoni, to swap the soda water in his favourite Americano (a bitter Italian aperitif mixed with sweet vermouth and a splash of soda) for gin. A slice of orange, rather than lemon, was added and voila - the Negroni was born. The drink quickly became very popular, although due to the prohibition it would take over ten years for it to catch on in the US. America, and New York in particular, was the cradle of cocktail society; bartenders would vie to have their blend acknowledged as the definitive drink and recipes would be carefully catalogued. As the Negroni was invented overseas and at a time when drinking was outlawed in the US its history by the time it was adopted as a cocktail hour staple was a little cloudy. Indeed, some experts would disagree with my versions of events, however, from the evidence they seem the most likely and certainly the most engaging.

Now named the Giacosa Café, the former Café Casoni is also sometimes referred called the Café Cavalli, due to its famous Florentine fashion designer owner and his eponymous flagship boutique located next door. Like the fashion of Pucci and Gucci, despite being something that I will always associate with Florence, The Negroni can be given the SE London treatment with the inclusion of Little Bird Gin, which is distilled in Peckham Rye. This is a drink you can easily pre -mix In advance of your party and pour as your guest arrive, remember the slice of orange and lots of chunky ice in a whiskey tumbler or old-fashioned. To make the perfect Negroni; one-part Little Bird Gin, one part Cinzano Rosso and one part Campari.

Sue’s Dark Chocolate Mousse with Banana Cake Serves - 8. Preparation time – 2 hours Cooking time – 40 minutes
Banana Cake • • • • • •
170g Butter Softened 170g Caster Sugar 3 Eggs 170g Self-Raising Flour 2 Bananas (ripe/overripe) Vanilla Extract (Optional)
Method 1) Cream the butter into the sugar 2) Gradually add the eggs and flour 3) Mash the bananas and add them to the batter, mixing them in well (don’t leave lumps or they will sink to the bottom when you cook the cake). 4) Add a few drops of vanilla extract. 5) Grease and flour a loaf tin and pour in the batter 6) Bake at 1800C/Gas mark 4 for approximately 1 hour, or until the cake test is done (i.e. Test it by sticking a knife in – if the blade comes out clean, the cake is ready – if sticky, give it a little longer). 7. Check after 30mins – if the top starts browning too quickly, cover with a piece of grease-proof paper to prevent burning.
Dark Chocolate Mousse • • • • •
450g Chocolate (melted) 160g (6 eggs) Yolk 240g Egg White 150g Sugar 400g Double Cream
Method 1) Melt the chocolate (450g) is a large bowl. 2) Add 160g egg yolk & 50g Sugar into the melted chocolate and mix. 3) Add into the bowl 240g egg whites and the remaining 100g sugar and whisk. 4) Slowly add the double cream (400g) and whisk it until silky smooth. 14 | SE21 - October 2016
5) Spoon into glasses and chill for at least 2 hours. This is one of our most popular desserts for weddings! Serve in a glass with the banana bread alongside, or spoon the chocolate mousse onto the banana bread as a really yummy alternative!

The Many Shades Of Autumn
K
eep the colour going in your garden long after summer. While summer planting has had its moment, there are plenty of plants that are absolutely at their peak right now. Here’s my pick of the key ingredients to make your garden dazzle its way into winter.
Must Have Trees Amelanchier lamarckii - One of my favourite trees for a small garden, for many reasons, not least its stunning orange/red autumn leaves. Particularly nice as a multi-stem. Sorbus ‘Joseph Rock’ (Rowan) - Another fab tree for a town garden (max height 10m) with scarlet leaves and clusters of yellow berries in autumn. Acer palmatum ‘Atropurpureum’ (Japanese maple) - A neat and elegant acer with purple leaves turning intense scarlet in autumn. At 6m tall it’s fine for most town gardens.
Glowing Perennials Sedum ‘Matrona’ - Sedum gets better throughout the autumn. This one has clusters of starry, pale plum flowers, coppery foliage and striking dark purple stems. Or try sedum ‘Ruby Glow’ with deep red flowers. Lovely with silvers and grasses. Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ Even if you don’t usually like yellow in your garden, you might make an exception for these lovely golden daisies with their striking black eye that’ll light up the garden until October. Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Star of the East’ - Another sunny choice, this crocosmia has large orange brown flowers into October and a clump of lovely green sword shaped leaves adding summer interest. Verbena bonariensis - With small clusters of purple flowers atop long stems, this looks great popping up amongst grasses and complements warmer yellows. Symphyotrichum ‘Little Carlow’ (Aster) - The gentle lavender blues of asters go with anything. I love ‘Little Carlow’ with its mass of small violet blue daisies into mid autumn, (1m). Aster x frikartii ‘Monch’ is another to look out for.
Gorgeous Grasses Stipa gigantea - If you have room, (they can reach 2m) this is king of grasses with airy oat-like flower heads turning pale yellow in autumn - wonderful when back lit. 16 | SE21 - October 2016
Calamagrostis x acutifolia ‘Karl Foerster’ A tall upright grass with straw coloured flowers in autumn. Stipa calamagrostis has similar flower heads, but has shorter arching branches. Miscanthus sinensis ‘Kleine Silberspinne’ - Some miscathus can be huge but this one (up to 1m) doesn’t take up too much space and the purple flower heads turn silvery in autumn and shimmer beautifully in the light. Pennisetum alopecuroides ‘Hameln’ - Known as foxtail grasses, pennisetum come into their own in autumn with their pretty fluffy seed heads. This one has long lasting pink flowers and yellow foliage in autumn (1.2m). But there are masses of others to choose from.
Stunning shrubs Cotinus ‘Grace’ (Smoke bush) - A gorgeous shrub with large rounded purple leaves turning a brilliant pinky red in autumn. Reaching 6m it’s great for screening, but keep it contained by hard pruning in spring. Ceratostigma willmottianum ‘Forest Blue’ (Chinese plumbago) - This smaller shrub (up to 1m) will light up the garden with its mass of cobalt blue flowers into October when the foliage turns rich red too. Cornus sanguinea ‘Midwinter Fire’ - With pretty green leaves in summer, this is really grown for it’s bright orange-yellow autumn foliage revealing colourful stems with fiery red tips in winter. Swimming is one of the few things you can do at this young age, and it’s also one of the healthiest activities for you too! In water, babies are able to exercise every single muscle in their body - including some they would never even find on land. Sarah Ashton who runs Water Babies’ baby swimming classes in the South East London area, explains, “Whilst the emphasis in our sessions is very clearly on strengthening the bond you have with your baby, it’s also about having fun and increasing water confidence. Swimming from birth is also excellent for a baby’s development. Whilst being very gentle, it provides a complete physical workout, strengthening the heart, lungs and respiratory system which, in turn aids development of the brain. What’s more, regular
swimming can enhance baby awareness and improve eating and sleeping patterns as I was delighted to discover was the case with my own child!” Classes are kept small, and the fun relaxed atmosphere creates a sense of camaraderie within the group, with carers – and children – often socialising together afterwards. And don’t worry if you’re not a particularly strong swimmer – the water’s always shallow enough to stand up in, and rest assured you’ll never have to go underwater if you really don’t want to. How To Successfully Hit Your Goals
W
hat drives a winning mindset, and how can you create an environment where you can avoid relapsing into old behaviours, break away from limiting beliefs and allow success to thrive?
A Winning Mindset There are many factors that make up a winning mindset. The first is general attitude. Presumably you're reading this article because you wanted to understand how you can improve yourself in the most efficient and time-effective way. In doing so, you’ve just demonstrated to yourself that you have some degree of motivation and desire to change, but here are some other important factors to consider:
Environment This is probably the most important of all. In 2015, I went on a 40-week brand accelerator programme. Going on the programme was one of the best business decisions I’ve ever made, but my personal performance levels went through the roof because I was taken into an environment where I was surrounded by entrepreneurs or well-known business leaders talking about how they solve meaningful problems. Never underestimate the power of environment for driving performance.

Strategy This links back to hustle. Hard work isn’t enough, there needs to be a strategy behind it. Having a really big goal is important, but you have to be patient. Set a big goal, then map your path to that goal by setting small targets which eventually add up to the big result. As you achieve these little wins, celebrate them, then move on to the next milestone. People who have a winning mindset will feed off results, and if they don’t see them, will become frustrated. So, map your way to your ultimate goal, celebrate along the way, be persistent and never lose focus.
Asking For Help Your general attitude is how you think, what you say to yourself and others, and how you behave. It’s about self-respect, and therefore the level of respect you have for others. Many of us are unaware of how we sabotage ourselves with negative thoughts and that’s why it’s always good to ask for help if you need it, whether it’s from someone who’s got what you want or a qualified expert.
Relationships Look around at who you associate with. Are they high-performing people? Look amongst your friends, work colleagues, your partner and even family. Is there someone there who is a toxic influence? Someone who is very negative or has a closedmindset? These people are unhealthy to be around and will affect your performance. Get rid of them. It’s up to you to remove yourself from them; you are personally responsible for who you spend time with. If your goals are to get fitter, spend time with people who are as motivated as you are about getting fitter, and people who have the fitness you want to emulate. A Will to Direct the Destination of Your Estate
E
very day within our neighbourhoods at least one household is mourning the loss of a loved one, who has died, without any warning. Such is the fragility of life. Equally true many of these households have their pain exacerbated because the sudden departure of their loved one is compounded by the fact, their loved one did not get around to writing a Will. Such was the pain bestowed upon the family of a former client, who always had three items on her agenda to complete before she dies. Firstly, renovate her house; secondly, have a luxurious overseas trip; and finally write her Will. Sadly, she died having accomplished two of her three agenda items. Yes, that’s right, she never got around to putting a Will in place at the time of her death. Based upon the evidence from society, that does not seem to be a real issue. Why? According to research the majority of people do not have a Will. Some research findings quote 70% of the population do not have a Will in place, whereas other research is more generous and suggests its only 55% of the population who are without a Will. Whatever the percentage, the reality is the majority of people do not have a valid Will in place. It is often amazing why individuals relegate or postpone the writing of their Will to some unknown time and place in the future. Perhaps, they have it on good authority that they will be able to execute their Will before they disappear. If only this was true for all of those households who have lost loved ones without any notice or warning. If this applies to you, don’t feel alone. It is a phenomenon that is not confined to any particular socio-economic classification of people or fame as the family of comedian the late Rik Mayall found when he died prematurely in June 2014 and they faced a hefty inheritance tax (IHT) bill.

The absence of a Will may not be the end of the world but it does exacerbate the problems as families come to terms with their loss. This is particularly frightening when it is superimposed with some myths about inheritance that is found to exist in society. For example, the often overheard myth of the common law partner. Where a cohabitee dies intestate (without a Will), the surviving party does not have any entitlement to the deceased’s estate. There is at least five major reasons why everyone should have a Will. 1) It allows you to determine the destination of your estate 2) It makes the administration of an estate less time consuming 3) You can choose the Executors of your estate 4) It’s a key part of your IHT planning 5) It reduces your IHT liability In addition, in the case where there are minors, a Will allows the appointment of guardians for the children in the advent of death. The great news is we are in October, which is Free Wills Month. This is where a group of household charities offer individuals over 55 years old the opportunity to have a simple Will prepared free of charge by participating local solicitors. If you are not old enough don’t despair because after October is November, which is Will Aid Month. This is a partnership between the legal profession and nine UK charities. Participating solicitors waive their fee for writing a basic Will and clients are encouraged to donate to one of the nine charities. There is now not a plausible excuse for putting that Will in place, especially if you have loved ones and you do not want to increase their pain when you die. Memorial. A Tribute to Taxidermy
Look back in time with our Prehistoric Garden, which features ‘living fossils’ – plant and tree species which date back to the time of the dinosaurs. A redwood and a yew tree tower above tree ferns, cycads and ginkgos and even an amazing Wollemi pine, thought to be extinct until 1994. The garden, at the highest point of the Horniman estate, is also home to a velociraptor sculpture, keeping a prehistoric watchful eye on the modern London skyline.

Saturday 19 November: Concordia Chamber Choir For our autumn concert, the Concordia Chamber Choir is proud to bring together, in exciting combination, two composers of the first rank. One is a household name, the other slightly lesser known; one from the 18th century, the other still alive in the 21st. What links Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt is their miraculous musical interpretations of the scriptures. The first half of the concert will feature several of Pärt’s dynamic, contemporary religious pieces including a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis; the second is taken up with Bach’s unique, magisterial Magnificat in which the choir will have the great pleasure of being accompanied by the South Circular Orchestra. We hope you’ll be able to join us for an evening of soaring beauty and deep spirituality which will confirm, once again, Concordia’s reputation as one of south London’s most prestigious choirs. 7:30 pm All Saints’ Church, Lovelace Rd, SE21 8JY.
