Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

September’s Star Performers Keep the colour glowing in your garden into autumn with these late flowering beauties…

Anemone x hybrid ‘September Charm’ These elegant flowers, which rise up on long stems from a mass of large leaves, will brighten up the garden from late summer until early autumn. A. ‘September Charm’ is a pretty rosy pink and A. ‘Honorine Jolbert’ is a crisp white – both have gorgeous sunny golden centres. Happy in sun and shade – they’re a must.

Aster x frikartii ‘Mönch’ With a mass of pale blue daisy-like flowers, this is another perennial to lighten up the early autumn months. A. ‘Little Carlow’ is another reliable variety with lavender blue flowers. Best in full sun.

Geranium ‘Rozanne’ Of all the geraniums G. ‘Rozanne’ is one of the latest flowering. If you keep deadheading this useful geranium with large pale purple flowers, it’ll bloom into autumn. Happiest in an open sunny spot where it’ll form a large spreading mound.

Rudbeckia fulgida var. sullivantii ‘Goldsturm’ Large golden daisies with black eyes they shine out against purples and grasses into early autumn. For a similar sunny sunflower feel, try helianthus varieties such as H. ‘Lemon Queen’ with softer yellow flowers.

Hylotelephium (Sedum) Sedum come into their own in September when their large flat flower heads turn to warm shades of pink, purple and red. Of the many varieties H. ‘Red Cauli’ with crimson red flowers is one of the brightest.

Liriope muscari A very useful evergreen grass-like ground cover plant for partial to full shade. It also has purpleblue flower spikes in late summer. ‘Money Maker’ is a paler version and ‘Monroe White’ is a pretty white variety.

Salvia ‘Amistad’ The salvia family are great for late summer colour and S. Amistad with its large dramatically dark purple flower spires on long dark stems is a stunner and will go on into flowering into October, provided it has a sunny spot with free draining soil. S. ‘Blue Enigma’ is another statuesque salvia with tall spires of bright blue.

Crocosmia x crocosmiiflora ‘Emily Mckenzie’ The warm terracotta orange of this late flowering crocosmia goes beautifully with purples and ornamental grasses. It also has attractive sword like leaves. It likes full sun or part shade and doesn’t like to dry out.

Perovskia ‘Blue spire’ The tall spires of pale grey/ blue flowers on silvery stems create a cool haze when planted en mass. Flowering into late September it looks great with ornamental grasses and other late flowering perennials. Best in full sun, it can get floppy, so cut it right down in spring. P. ‘Little Spire’ is a shorter version of the well known P. ‘Blue Spire.’

Gaura lindheimeri A delicate airy plant with a mass of fine white star-shaped flowers on slender stems from May to September. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses and Verbena bonariensis in an open spot in full sun.

Ceratostigma plumbaginoides A great small shrub for autumn with masses of bright cobalt-blue flowers from August to October which contrast beautifully with the rich russet-red leaves. Full sun or part shade. 12 | SE21 - September 2018

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Blackberry & Apple Pie Who didn’t grow up with Blackberry and Apple Pie, it is a dish that makes many of us nostalgic and for me it also heralds the turning of the season. So, what makes the perfect Blackberry & Apple Pie? Everyone has a different view, but for me it comes down to ingredients. The perfect pastry, sweet English apples, and blackberries that have just enough acidity to contrast with the sugar-crusted pastry (shop bought blackberries are often much sweeter than wild ones). I am lucky as between the windfalls from my neighbor’s apple, Amanda’s allotment, and local hedgerows my house is well stocked with apples from September to November. Blackberries are around until the end of the month, so now is the time to make your pies! For preference I would always use a classic short crust pastry, light and not too sweet it will enhance the magical contents within, leaving that to be the star of the show. Plus, of course, it must stay crisp on top! Of course, my way may not be your way, but experimenting is always fun, and I can guarantee no one is going to complain if you are serving up your creations every week until you find the perfect recipe – so go for it! Serves 6-8 - You will need a traditional 2 litre pie dish that measures about 30cm in length. If you really hate making pastry don’t let this stop you – just buy ready-made – it’s still a home made pie!

Photo by Rebecka G. Sendroiu on Unsplash

14 | SE21 - September 2018

Ingredients – For the pastry

• 250g plain flour • 150g butter, cold from the fridge • 150g lard, cold from the fridge • Ice-cold water

Ingredients – For the filling

• 6 large Bramley apple • 2 large handfuls of blackberries • Sugar to taste • Double Cream or Custard to serve

Method

1) Put the flour into a large mixing bowl with a small pinch of salt. Cut the butter and lard into small chunks and rub into the flour with your thumbs and fingertips. To bring the mixture into a ball add a little ice-cold water one tablespoonful at a time. Draw the dough in from the sides to form a ball. Be careful not to add too much water at once – you want a dough that is firm enough to roll, but soft enough to demand careful lifting. Once complete set aside in the fridge for 30 minutes, covered in a tea towel. 2) Set the over to 200 degrees centigrade (gas mark 6). Peel, core and quarter the apples, cutting them into thick slices or chunks, whichever you prefer. Put them into the pie dish. Taste the apple to gauge the sweetness, and then add sugar accordingly – I keep my sugar quite light, but you may want to add up to a tablespoon per apple if you have a sweet tooth! Add the blackberries and toss them with the apples and sugar. 3) Roll the pastry out to fit the top of the dish. You want enough extra pastry around the edge to be able to cut off and cover the rim of the dish, plus a few scraps to make some leaves to decorate. 4) Wet the rim of the pie dish with water then fix the outer rim of pastry to it, cutting and pasting to fit. Wet with water or beaten egg and then lift the pastry topping onto the pie, pressing the edge firmly onto the pastry rim. Crimp it to seal with your thumb and first finger, or by pressing down with the prongs of a fork. 5) ut two short slits in the centre of the pastry to let out any steam and decorate the top of the pie with scraps of pastry cut into leaves. Brush with a little milk and dust with caster sugar. 6) Bake for 40-45 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and pale gold. Top Tips For The Secondary School Open Day Season

A

s a Headmistress I relish this time of year, as we welcome visitors through the gates on Westwood Hill and let our pupils showcase their school. As a parent, I know only too well that it can be an anxious time, as parents and children embark on days of tours, prospectus reading, online research and endless conversations with friends, colleagues, neighbours about finding the ‘best’ school. In London we are blessed with a plethora of options for girls and boys, but that often makes it even harder. Here a few top tips for a less stressful experience.

1) Organise your time

5) Stay positive

Make a note of all the open events you want to attend, then register. Visit school websites and social media channels before you visit, and then compare your experience. Talk to parents who have children at each school, and seek advice from your child's current school.

The competitive nature of school places can sometimes strain relationships – between friends who are parents but also between parents and children. It is important not to let your anxiety filter through to your child, but to let them know that whatever happens you are proud of them and they have a positive future ahead of them. Starting secondary school is both daunting and exciting but there will be the right school out there for your child; they should feel secure and positive, rather than feeling it is a second choice place.

2) Check the entrance procedures Is there an entrance exam? How does the interview system work? How do you apply, and by when?

3) Speak to current pupils Open events are designed to highlight the best parts of each school, so remember to look beyond the window dressing, facilities and smart marketing materials and speak to the pupils. Are they speaking freely and authentically? Observe their interactions with each other and with staff. Are they happy and fulfilled and are they proud of their school?

4) Look beyond league tables League tables do not tell the whole story. All schools will strive for academic excellence for every pupil, but the starting points and journeys will vary enormously. Highly selective schools inevitably have students who produce top results. These schools are more difficult to get into and parents often resort to tutoring. Try not to get drawn into this culture which can be detrimental on a child’s wellbeing, and foster a reliance on tutoring long term in order to cope with the academic expectations.

6) Not all schools suit all children Keep perspective and remember that all schools are different, despite their promotional material promising a similar sounding curricular and cocurricular experience. There will be plenty of views and opinions about every school, but the key is remembering that you will know your child best and therefore you will recognise which school is the right fit for their educational journey. Buying into the ethos and aims of a school, seeing that the physical environment is engaging and aspirational, that the pupils are able to be themselves and are fulfilled, and that all the staff are committed to bringing out the best in every child, are all secondary to your instinct about whether your child will be happy there: will they thrive, grow and leave feeling happy and confident about their future? Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Mixed Results

I

t has been a mixed bag of results so far in the league for Gavin Rose’s team. However, the performances so far have shown that Dulwich will be competitive in this division. Stepping up a league, we knew it would take time for the squad to find the consistency that saw them promoted last season. However, the quality of the squad looks to be at the same level of the teams we have played already. The opposition generally have just been a little more streetwise on the pitch. The first few home games in the Vanarama National League have seen good crowds at Imperial Fields, but since the move from Champion Hill they have so far not reached the sort of attendance figures we once recently enjoyed. For the first time in recent history, Dulwich Hamlet sold over 400 season tickets, which is an amazing achievement, but we seemed to have lost a few supporters since the enforced move away from East Dulwich. Although currently homes games are being played only 8 miles away, the journey is not easy for fans with no direct trains and buses. The Supporters’ Trust will be looking at running a number of initiatives to encourage supporters and the local community, who may be finding the journey difficult, that their continued support for the club is so important. The fans match day support really does make a difference to the on-field performances and brings significant funds into the club, more importantly it shows Meadow Residential (Owners of Champion Hill) and Southwark Council what this football club means to the local community. The football club’s Community Team are already focused on encouraging schools and youth organisations to attend home fixtures by continuing thier free family ticket offer to these groups. This season they have extended the offer beyond Southwark by including any school or youth organisations in the vicinity to our temporary home at Imperial Fields. Any school or youth organisation who would like to take the football club up on this offer, should email George or Rob at schools.dhfc@gmail.com.

16 | SE21 - September 2018

The Supporters’ Trust will be organising coaches this season for distant away games and fixtures that may be affected by rail closures. This year the Trust will be trailing subsidised coach travel to ensure that travelling to away matches is affordable for as many fans as possible. In the event that any profits are made on coach travel, the Trust will donate these between the 12th Man scheme and the Club’s charity for this season, Redthread (www.redthread.org.uk). The first coach to Bath City on 18 August proved very popular with supporters. On Thursday 16 August, The East Dulwich Tavern’s popular PUB QUIZ raised funds in support of Dulwich Hamlet Football Club. The packed crowd helped raise over £500, with every penny donated to the club via the 12th Man Scheme. Many thanks to the team at The East Dulwich Tavern and all the local businesses that donated prizes for that evenings raffle. Mark (Scolly) Scoltock DHST SPokesperson

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

Why does exercise make me feel anxious?

T

here can be several reasons for this. It’s common to find that people have anxieties around exercise. One reason might be that you’re new to it. You don’t know what to expect. You don’t know if you’re going to be any good, how you’re going to get on with it. You really want to like it because you want the benefits, or the doctors told you to do it. Or your partner exercises, and you want to do that together, but you don’t know what to expect. That’s normal. Just go for it. Find a personal trainer if that suits you. Someone who can ease you into the exercise, and pace, and give you the appropriate type and intensity of exercise. Or just get started. My stepfather has just had great results with a Couch to 5K programme, so I’d recommend that. If you’re new to exercise, try and mitigate some of that anxiety by just getting started, and start small. Another reason you might find it anxiety inducing is that your nervous system is already elevated. If that’s the case, the worst type of exercise for you is going to be high intensity exercise. Start with something that’s gentle, restorative. Yoga would be a great thing to do. Light jogging would be another. Perhaps a sport that’s not super high intensity. An easy game of tennis, for example, where you’ve also got some social element. Where you’ve got somebody at the other side of the court, and you can have a drink afterwards perhaps. What I mean by an elevated nervous system is that you’re stressed; you already have high levels of anxiety; your sleep and your mental health might be affected. High intensity exercise is not the right intensity for you. Maybe it’s that you’re worried about breathing, and this is something I hear quite a bit. If you’re worried about your breath, perhaps you’ve had anxiety in the past, and you associate being out of breath with panic or anxiety. That’s also common, so start slow. Get used to having your breathing elevated. Get used to breathing yourself back into

18 | SE21 - September 2018

a relaxed state, and then increase the periods of time that you’re elevating your breath for. That’s effective, and it just helps you to overcome that initial reluctance to get your heart rate up and your breathing up because it associates with panic. Last thing is to set small goals if you’re nervous about exercise, for example, because you’re new to it. Set small goals, and that applies to all the other points I’ve made as well. Forget your ego. Forget that, “I ought to be good at this. I used to be good at this. I’m good at everything, why am I not at this?” I think that prevents a lot of people from really enjoying exercise because they think they ought to be better at it than they are. It’s something that we should all be doing along with plenty of activity in the day. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshotperformance.com

What's On - September Thursday 6 September: Damian Le Bas – A Journey through Gypsy Britain Damian Le Bas grew up surrounded by Gypsy history. His great-grandmother would tell him stories of her childhood in the ancient Romani language – the places her family stopped and worked, the ways they lived, the superstitions and lores of their people. But his own experience of life on the road was limited to Ford Transit journeys from West Sussex to Hampshire to sell flowers. In a bid to better understand his Gypsy heritage, the history of the Britain’s Romanies and the rhythms of their life today, Damian set out on a journey to discover the atchin tans, or stopping places – the old encampment sites known only to Travellers. In his powerful and soulful debut The Stopping Places, a Radio 4 Book of the Week, Damian le Bas tells the story of his journey, and what we can all learn about this often hidden side of British life. On 6th September Damian will visit Dulwich Books to talk about his story. It promises to be a fascinating and enlightening evening, touching on history, folklore, spirituality, language, oppression and many other topics. At Dulwich Books, 6 Croxted Road, SE21 8SW. Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas September News

W

e all adore our kids, but I always sense a collective sigh of relief around Dulwich when the summer holidays are over and our cherubs return back to school. We have had an amazing few weeks together, spending time with family and friends both here and in Greece, but it will be nice to get back to our usual routine. We really are spoilt for choice with so many fantastic events for September. Village Books have an incredible line-up this month, starting with comedian and Strictly Come Dancing star Susan Calman (6 Sept), who will be talking about her new book Sunny Side Up and her mission to bring back joy, kindness and community to us all. The literary giant, Sebastian Faulks, will chat about his writing, his loves and how his new book Paris Echo came about (12 Sept). Six times Olympic Gold Medal winner, Sir Chris Hoy MBE, will be at Dulwich College talking about his career, all things bikes and cycling, answering questions from the audience and signing copies of his new book How to Ride a Bike (17 Sept). Yotam Ottolenghi and Tara Wigley will host an evening of chat and food demonstration (18 Sept) to celebrate the launch of Yotam’s latest cookbook, Simple. Yotam and Tara will be demonstrating how easy the recipes are and will be chatting with Guardian Food journalist Felicity Cloake. Take Nothing With You author Patrick Gale will be in conversation with Hannah Beckerman (26 Sept). Take Nothing With You is a sad-funny comedy of resilience and survival that is sure to appeal to fans of Rough Music as well as to readers newly drawn to his work from watching the BBC drama Man in an Orange Shirt. An evening with Graham Norton (29 Sept) at JAGS Community Hall promises fun, laughter and chat with Graham as he discusses his new novel A Keeper and why he loves writing fiction. Other highlights this month include the East Dulwich WI’s September meeting ‘An Evening with a Royal Butler’ (5 Sept). William French will recount his life as a butler to royalty and the stars. He has served the Royal Family on the royal yacht Britannia, Princess Diana at Kensington Palace and even Hollywood stars Nicole Kidman and Robert Redford. All welcome. Mindset Moments

A

lthough I’m still hoping for our Indian summer this month, the change of season is approaching. The return to school and work and our busy routines kicking in again, can all be quite a shock to the system, especially after the wonderful summer we’ve had! It can be a bit daunting to have to throw ourselves back into every day life after the holidays, family time and relaxation of the summer. Here are some tips to help you to lift your mood and get motivated, whilst staying calm this autumn! Re-connect with your goals - it’s nearing the final quarter of the year. If you had set yourself some goals (personal/ health/work) for 2018, now is a great time to check in and take stock of how you’re doing. If you’ve achieved them- great! If you’re not quite there yet you can ask yourself whether these things are still important to you or not? If the goals are still valid then brainstorm the steps to get you further towards achieving them. If not create a couple of new goals to reach by the end of the year. Whether it be to enter a 10K run, achieve something work related, learn a new skill or clear out some clutter; having something to aim for, plan and work towards can really inspire and motivate us to get into action again.

The power of a song - music can totally lift the mood in a matter of minutes. If you’re finding it difficult to muster up motivation and energy, why not create an uplifting playlist of some of your favourite tunes and pop it on when you’re feeling the need. Notice how your mind set can shift quite quickly! Laughter - one of the best tonics when we’re feeling a bit down is laughter! Whether it be watching some comedy, reading or listening to something funny or being around people who make you giggle, a good belly laugh can reduce stress and tension and generally lift our spirits. As Charlie Chaplin said “A day without laughter is a day wasted”! Get moving - As well as improving physical health, the importance of physical exercise in reducing stress, depression and anxiety is widely recognized now. Exercise actually has a similar chemical effect on the body to some anxiety medications. Cardiovascular exercise, that is the type of movement that gets the heart pumping, causes the body to burn up Cortisol, (the stress hormone) and increases the levels of ‘feel good’ endorphins in the body, elevating our mood and relieving stress. Remember to look after yourself whilst getting back into your routine and I wish you a great September!

Ribera: Art of Violence

26 September 2018 - 27 January 2019

@dulwichgallery Shakespeare's London "All the World's a Stage"

10 September, 10.30am - 12.30pm, £12.50; £10 Friends Actor Lance Pierson will escort us on this popular tour of Shakespeare’s London, taking us to see the places where the playwright lived, wrote and acted, sharing extracts from his plays connected with the locations that we stop at.

Contextual Lectures Series

Ribera: Art of Violence will be the first UK show of work by the Spanish Baroque artist and printmaker, Jusepe de Ribera (1591-1652), bringing together his most sensational, shocking and masterfully composed work. This exhibition will explore for the first time the theme of violence in Ribera's work to demonstrate how his images are neither the product of his supposed sadism nor the expression of a purely aesthetic interest, but rather involve a complex artistic, religious and cultural engagement in the depiction of bodily suffering - challenging visitors to look beyond the shocking imagery.

Edward Bawden

Until 9 September 2018 The British artist and designer Edward Bawden (1903–89) is renowned for his monumental linocuts of Brighton Pier and other Victorian architecture, and for his witty designs for companies like Twinings and Fortnum & Mason. This is the first major exhibition to look at every aspect of Bawden’s career, championing him as a fine artist while also demonstrating the wit and versatility of his design work.

Tuesdays, 10.30 - 11.45am, £12; £10 Friends & Concessions After the 2017 bicentenary series that looked back on the Gallery's origins, in this new series accomplished authorities will speculate on how the wider future might look a generation from now across politics, social change, engineering, banking, law and popular culture.

Perfect Storm: the Climate Change, Population and Development Nexus 11 September - With Professor Mark Maslin, Professor of Geography, UCL Climate change challenges the very way we organize our society. Professor Maslin argues that climate change, however, must be seen within the context of the other great challenges of the twenty-first century: global poverty, population growth, environmental degradation and global security. To meet these twenty-first century challenges we must change some of the basic rules of our society to allow us to adopt a much more global and long-term approach and in doing so develop solutions that can benefit everyone.

Environment, Climate & a Just Future 18 September - With Professor Liz Fisher, Professor of Environmental Law, University of Oxford Democracies have many choices in how to shape their environmental futures, and law plays an important role in realising those choices. Environmental problems require consideration of incommensurable issues, such as vast numbers of people in many different places. How do we craft a body of law that is both stable and dynamic so as to ensure a just future?

U3A Dulwich

Retired? Bored? Lonely? Want To Do Something Different? “U3A provided me with opportunities to use and develop skills which I had acquired earlier in my life, and that does wonders for one’s self-esteem.” “Being part of a group which is learning and interacting, gives me a lot of satisfaction”. “I found coming to U3A I met people who had been in a similar situation to me.” These are just a few of the comments made by members of U3A. For many people U3A has been a life-changing experience, particularly when they retired, or perhaps at a difficult time in their life, or when they were bored or lonely, or just wanted to do something different. U3A began in the UK over thirty years ago and there are now a thousand groups throughout the country with a membership of over 400,000 older people. There is a small fee for membership, which in D &D is £25.00 a year. The groups are all run by members who are volunteers. They learn together (and play together) in subject groups. No qualifications are expected or given. The purpose of the U3A is to promote lifelong learning in groups of like-minded people who want to share an interest, hobby or pastime. Dulwich & District U3A has over 80 interest groups! The choice is impressive and covers: Art, Archaeology, Astronomy, Boules, Computing, Crafts, Cycling, Films, Genealogy, History, Languages, Music, Museum and Gallery visits, Opera, Poetry, Photography, Quizzes, Scrabble, Shakespeare, Play Reading, Tennis, Theatre, Ukulele, Walking, Writing, Zumba and much, much more! Evidence commissioned by NICE (the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence) concluded that participation in creative and physical activities could improve mental health and wellbeing. The Dulwich and District U3A is relatively 34 | SE21 - September 2018

new but its rapid growth, with over five hundred members, has demonstrated a demand for such a group. Our U3A covers Herne Hill, Forest Hill, Honor Oak, Sydenham and Peckham, although anyone living further away is welcome. Our monthly meetings, with guest speakers usually take place in Herne Hill and individual interest groups meet in private homes or community centres. Outings and visits to museums may incur an extras charge but all monthly meetings and interest groups are covered by the yearly fee. Our Open Day Interest Groups Fair takes place on Thursday September 13th from 12.00 2.00 pm at St Barnabas Hall, 23 Dulwich Village SE21 7BT. Do come and see what the 80 groups have to offer. Most Groups will have a display of work and Conveners will be available to talk to. No need for boredom or loneliness. We may have the answer for you, or a friend or a relative. Education News from Alleyn's

Fostering Independence It is never too soon to begin developing children’s life skills, writes Katherine Beith, Year 6 teacher at Alleyn’s Junior School and mother of three. Here are some thoughts on how to support your child’s growing independence.

Get organised for school Involve your children in packing their school bags and make sure they do this the night before. Help them understand the consequences of leaving their homework behind or forgetting their instrument or PE kit. Resist the temptation to deliver forgotten items to their school – they are more likely to remember for themselves the next time if they have felt the consequences of forgetting this time!

Go sightseeing There is so much to see and do in London so take every opportunity to expand your child’s mind and their horizons. Use public transport whenever you can. Ask them to plan the route on the bus or tube and to talk you through the journey before you leave; when they make the transition to travelling without you, they will be confident using a variety of routes. Show them how the Zip or Oyster card works, and familiarise them with the TFL website and travel apps, like Citymapper, and Trainline.

Independent travel When the time feels right, encourage your child to start making journeys independently. First, they can make short outings to a friend’s house, or the final few hundred metres to school, building up to completing their journey to school without you. As soon as your child is travelling alone, consider giving them a mobile phone. They only need it for communication, so something old but functional will do fine. Talk to them about how to look after themselves while travelling and who to ask for help if they need it.

Encourage financial understanding Open a bank account for your child and talk about interest rates, tax and savings. Find out whether their school runs any business skills schemes; many run initiatives in which boys and 36 | SE21 - September 2018

girls are encouraged to set up and run a small business enterprise starting from scratch and with a nominal sum of money. Such activities can be great fun as well as helping to develop business and financial acumen.

Foster interest in the wider world Help your child develop an awareness of the world. Find time to discuss news stories with them or explore publications such as The Week Junior, Aquila Magazine, First News or National Geographic Kids. When appropriate, supervise them looking through adult newspapers. The more children can be exposed to the wider world, the sooner they will be ready to join it.

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

The Importance Of Regularly Inspecting Your Dog

L

ate summer and August is a time of plenty, when fruits and vegetables ripen ready for harvest. It is also a time of grass seeds, plant thorns and marauding insects, especially ticks, all of which can wreak major damage on your pet’s health. Grass seed are an especially innocuous but highly problematic issue if they penetrate the dog’s skin at any point. These tiny but surprisingly sharp seeds can quickly work their way deep into subcutaneous skin layers and beyond. They can cause serious infection and abscesses, not to mention expensive vet bills. If your dog suddenly goes lame check the pads and in-between for signs of grass seed ingress. If your dog starts shaking his head repeatedly, look in the ears, eyes and even mouth for signs of grass seed or insect bites. Any doubts, go to your vet. All dogs, but especially long-haired dogs, dogs with skin folds and wrinkles, or with pendulous ears, are capable of harbouring nasty pests. In such cases daily grooming and coat checking is not only advisable but a must, especially after a long walk. We are mostly familiar with the idea of checking for lumps and bumps but checking through fur for ticks and other nasties is crucial at this time of year- especially when you know the life threatening diseases ticks can carry. Learn the correct way to remove a tick and to always carry the right tool- see the O’Tom Tick Twister video at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jIoCTWYJsvo. Never try to remove a tick with your fingers, or try to burn it off with a flame or with alcohol. Safest is to go to your vet. All that said many dogs and pups do not readily take to an intimate, vet-style inspection, especially around socially sensitive areas like the face, anal area, tummy and paws. Some dogs will growl, others may get very wriggly- or just ‘flomp’, refusing to move. So owners of pups should practise a daily inspection routine that will result in an adult dog that is willing to be touched and inspected over his whole body, from tip to toe. You should also be able to thoroughly inspect and clean your dog’s mouth and teeth without objection- but more on that another time. If you did not teach

your dog to accept this kind of handling as a pup, don’t delay it is never too late to learn. • Start off with two humans to one dog. Begin when your pup is tired and well exercised but not too sleepy. • Have the dog stand for the inspection, ideally he should not sit or lie down but start where is comfortable for him. • One of you should bait the dog at his front with a series of tasty treats. • The other should kneel sideways to the dog and start to gently touch him all over his body, saying each part as they go- ‘ears’, ‘teeth’, ‘paw’ and so on. • If your dog stops and looks at where you are touching or actively backs off this may indicate a sensitive area or that you are touching too hard or for too long to start with. • Stop and try again at the next session but with much less intensity. • Keep daily sessions short but aim to slowly get to the point you can touch your dog all over and really search through his fur with your fingers. • Aim to be able lift each paw and spread the pads so you can inspect the skin in between (raise the paw backwards as a farrier would to shoe a horse). Financial Matters with David Frederick

Final Call To Put It Right!

H

M Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has given UK taxpayers until 30th September 2018 to come forward and declare any foreign income or profits from offshore assets. From 1st October 2018, there will be new penalties introduced for those who have failed to make a full declaration and pay their tax liabilities. New legislation called ‘Requirement to Correct’ requires UK taxpayers to notify HMRC about any offshore tax liabilities relating to UK income tax, capital gains tax, or inheritance tax. For those taxpayers with overseas interests and yet to act, time is running out. In case UK resident taxpayers have forgotten or were unaware, taxpayers are required to declare their worldwide income and gains to HMRC via their annual selfassessment tax return. It does not matter whether the income and gains enter the UK. For example, any UK resident taxpayer renting out a property abroad, transferring income and assets from one country to another, or even renting out a UK property when living abroad could give rise to a UK tax liability. Rt Hon Mel Stride MP, Financial Secretary to the Treasury, said: “Since 2010 we have secured over £2.8bn for our vital public services by tackling offshore tax evaders, and we will continue to relentlessly crack down on those not playing by the rules. This new measure will place higher penalties on those who do not contact HMRC and ensure their offshore tax liabilities are correct. I urge anyone affected to get in touch with HMRC now.” From 1 October 2018, more than 100 countries, including the UK, will be able to exchange data on financial accounts under the Common Reporting Standard (CRS). CRS data will significantly enhance HMRC’s ability to detect offshore non-compliance and it is in taxpayers’ interests to correct any noncompliance before that data is received. The most common reasons for declaring offshore tax are in relation to foreign property, investment income and moving money into the UK from abroad. As at 31st July 2018, over 17,000 people have already contacted HMRC to notify them about tax due from sources of foreign income, such as their holiday homes and overseas properties.

40 | SE21 - September 2018

Taxpayers still have time to put their house in order. Three options are available to enable taxpayers to start the process of correcting their tax liabilities: 1) Use HMRC’s digital disclosure service as part of the Worldwide Disclosure Facility or any other service provided by HMRC as a means of correcting tax non-compliance; 2) Advise an officer of HMRC during the course of an enquiry into their tax affairs; or 3) Seek professional advice before contacting HMRC. Whatever option is chosen, taxpayers must notify HMRC by 30th September of their intention to make a declaration. Taxpayers will then have 90 days to make a full disclosure and pay any tax liabilities to HMRC. If taxpayers are confident that their tax affairs are in order, then they do not need to worry or take any action. However, HMRC has recommended taxpayers who are unsure of their position to seek advice from a professional tax adviser or agent. Furthermore, HMRC have advised taxpayers that “laws and specific circumstances can change, advice that you took in the past may no longer be valid.” HMRC has started receiving more information about international investments and financial structures held offshore by UK tax residents. From 1st October 2018, in all cases where a penalty applies, there will be a standard penalty equivalent to 200% of the tax liability which should have been disclosed to HMRC under the ‘Requirement to Correct’ but was not. Under the new legislation HMRC will also be targeting ‘enablers’, those who help others to evade tax offshore. Enablers will also face civil penalties, criminal prosecution and public naming. Taxpayers should act before it is too late.
