Deschampsia cespitosa ‘Goldtau’. A mound-forming evergreen grass, this has silvery purple flowers in the summer, maturing to a cloud of delicate golden seed heads. It’s happy in sun or part shade, in well-drained soil.
Medium Sized Grasses
Stipa tenuissima. Also known as ‘Mexican feather grass’ this is useful semi evergreen grass with fine wispy leaves and feathery silvery gold seed heads in summer. It’s lovely mingling with perennials such as salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’ or knautia. It likes full sun and well-drained soil. Comb out tatty bits or cut right down in spring for a fresh flush of green.
Small And Perfectly Formed Festuca glauca. This is a useful low growing evergreen grass that creates mounds of fine bluegreen foliage. It needs plenty of sun but doesn’t like to dry out, and in the right conditions sends up silvery grey flowers in summer. It works well with purples, pinks and whites.
Grass Care Cut deciduous grasses right back in late winter, before the new growth has got going. Remove seeds heads from evergreen varieties and comb them through with your fingers to remove tatty oldgrowth.Photoby firdaus ramadhan on Unsplash
Calamagrostis ‘Overdam’. Rarer and smaller (1m) than Karl Foerster, this is a pretty grass with an upright habit and cream striped leaves. Or try
L ate summer is when many grasses come into their own, with golden seed heads shimmering and swaying in the breeze. They look great in big drifts, acting like a neutral foil to colourful late flowering perennials like echinacea, gaura, anemones, sedums and Verbena bonariensis. But they also work well dotted around smaller gardens knitting plants together and adding a naturalism, movement and texture to planting. Most grasses like sun and free draining soil though some such as anemanthele lessioniana and deschampsia thrive in semi shade. Here are a few to try:
Hakonechloa macra. This is a gorgeous short grass with lush green foliage – a little like bamboo in feel. It’s happy in dappled shade and is fantastic en masse underplanting trees, where it cascades like flowing water, or for edging paths and borders.
Tall And Miscanthus.Statuesque
Sesleria autumnalis. A new favourite of mine, this is a low growing evergreen grass with mounds of bright green strappy leaves that turn more lime coloured in winter. It has short silvery flower spires in the summer.
which has pale fluffy flower heads in late August, that turn buttery coloured – it also has a more relaxed arching habit.

Calamaacutifolia x acutiflora ‘Karl Foerster’. A great grass with a very upright habit and fabulous seed heads. Unlike many grasses, the fresh green leaves arrive early in the season, before the fluffy purple flowers emerge, which finally turn to strawcoloured seed heads in summer, lasting through the winter.
Some of the best grasses for striking silky seed heads, they tend to flower late but make a real statement when they do. M. sinensis ‘Malepartus’ is a statuesque variety (2m) with a fountain of burgundy flowers, while M. Ferner Osten’ is slightly smaller. M. Adagio is a compact variety with a mass of shimmery silvery flowers. Stipa giganteum. This is a big statement grass, which throws its tall oaty flower heads high into the air – and is best in an open spot where the sun can shine through, turning them golden. It needs full sun and good drainage.

Put the flour into a large mixing bowl with a small pinch of salt. Cut the butter and lard into small chunks and rub into the flour with your thumbs and fingertips. To bring the mixture into a ball add a little ice-cold water one tablespoonful at a time. Draw the dough in from the sides to form a ball. Be careful not to add too much water at once – you want a dough that is firm enough to roll, but soft enough to demand careful lifting. Once complete set aside in the fridge for 30 minutes, covered in a tea towel.Setthe over to 200 degrees centigrade (gas mark 6). Peel, core and quarter the apples, cutting them into thick slices or chunks, whichever you prefer. Put them into the pie dish. Taste the apple to gauge the sweetness, and then add sugar accordingly – I keep my sugar quite light, but you may want to add up to a tablespoon per apple if you have a sweet tooth! Add the blackberries and toss them with the apples and sugar. There is always the option the add a sprinkle of cinnamon to the apples too – your choice! Roll the pastry out to fit the top of the dish. You want enough extra pastry around the edge to be able to cut off and cover the rim of the dish, plus a few scraps to make some leaves to decorate. Wet the rim of the pie dish with water then fix the outer rim of pastry to it, cutting and pasting to fit. Wet with water or beaten egg and then lift the pastry topping onto the pie, pressing the edge firmly onto the pastry rim. Crimp it to seal with your thumb and first finger, or by pressing down with the prongs of a fork.
Going Out Of Season - Blackberries, Blueberries, Cherry, Mange tout, Peach, Redcurrant, Strawberries (many of these towards the end of the month).
PS: If you really hate making pastry don’t let this stop you – just buy ready-made – it’s still a homemade pie!

Cut two short slits in the centre of the pastry to let out any steam and decorate the top of the pie with scraps of pastry cut into leaves. Brush with a little milk and dust with caster sugar. Bake for 4045 minutes, until the pastry is crisp and pale gold.

T here is NOTHING better than Blackberry and Apple Pie, it is a dish that makes many of us nostalgic and for me it also heralds the turning of the season. The perfect combination of pastry, sweet English apples, and blackberries that have just enough acidity to contrast with the sugar-crusted You will need a traditional 2 litre pie dish that measures about 30cm in length. How to Fitness When Travelling Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com
Maintain your
2) Agree with Yourself What You’ll Compromise On and What You Won’t Travelling inevitably requires some compromise. You’ll be offered meals you wouldn’t normally eat, rich foods you might ordinarily avoid, 3 courses where 1 would do, and potentially more alcohol. Make a list of what you’ll allow yourself to have and what you definitely won’t.
Many people don’t exercise when they’re travelling because there isn’t a gym, or they don’t have time to go outside. You don’t need a lot of space to work out and bodyweight is more than enough to challenge yourself.
3) Get Some Hand Grips for The Plane Journey I’m serious. Hand grips can be used to do a workout from your airplane seat. Hold one of the grips in your hand and squeeze. This action works the forearm and the bicep, but as you’re squeezing, also tense the muscles of your leg, or your core and glutes. It’s a great way to do a workout from your seat!
4) Plan Your Exercise Routine in Advance Try and find out what your schedule is before you go and figure out when you could fit in a run (and if you don’t know the area you’re staying in, just run 15 mins at a slightly slower pace in one direction then run back at a faster pace). Agree with yourself which morning you’ll do some exercises and just get up a do it.
5) You Don’t Need Much Space to Do a Full Body Workout
I
1) Check Out Where You’re Staying Look at the hotel website and the restaurant menus. If you have any particular dietary requirements, call ahead and ask them if they can cater for those needs. Most places will offer gluten-free, lactosefree and vegan options, but it’s pretty simple to create a meal that’s a little healthier by asking for the sauce to be brought in a jug on the side so you can control how much you have, for example. Don’t be embarrassed to ask the waiting staff how things are cooked either.
6) Stay Active Wherever You Are Even when you’re travelling there are plenty of opportunities to be active. Take the stairs instead of lifts or escalators. Stand where you can - even occasionally on the flight itself – rather than sitting.

t’s the lament of many; how do I maintain my fitness and stick to my routine when I’m travelling? There’re lots of things that can scupper our good intentions and break our routine. It’s easy to fall out of good habits and find yourself eating the wrong things, skipping on your exercise plan and spending far more time sitting than standing.Itdoesn’t have to be that way though. There’s a lot you can do to stay active even in a tiny hotel room, and a bit of planning and preparation can help you stay on track. Here’re some of my top tips for staying healthy and active when you’re away from home.

In addition, there are the landlords who are obsessed by paying cash to tradespeople, to avoid 20% VAT. They often receive a nasty shock when they are advised by their accountant that without a receipt for the transaction, it is not being accepted. Suddenly that saving of 20% VAT has cost them additional income tax.

Therefore, taxpayers should seek professional advice as soon as they are formally notified of a HMRC tax investigation.
3) Reported income and expenditure seemingly inconsistent for its business sector
5)inconsistentTheexistence of offshore bank accounts
In addition, since April 2022, HMRC has introduced some new checks targeting taxpayers in certain sectors deemed high risk of evasion due to the proliferation of cash transactions. Consequently, minicab drivers, taxi drivers and scrap metal merchants had to confirm to HMRC that their tax affairs was compliant before they were able to renew their licences from the local licensing authorities. Any license holder with underpaid taxes or not compliant were subjected to a loss of their licence and the risk of criminal prosecution.

6) Taxpayer operating in a HMRC deemed high-risk sector, such as cash orientated
• Social media observation or roaming
The sad reality is most taxpayers lack the sophistication, skills and financial resources to outwit HMRC. A common example of deliberate non-payment of taxes arises from residential property landlords who let out their property via an estateManyagent.ofthese landlords are oblivious to the fact that letting agents make an annual return to HMRC identifying landlords, rental properties and income earned. Moreover, some letting agents even itemise this service on their monthly statement to landlords. Despite this, landlords are super confident they can outwit HMRC. These landlords are paying their letting agent to report them to HMRC but they believe they are untouchable.
7) HMRC has received third party information about the Taxpayerstaxpayershould not assume that a tax investigation means they have committed a tax offence. Similarly, it does not mean HMRC are right in their assertion or findings.
HMRC tax investigations have been ratcheted up since the end of the Covid-19 support from central government. This comes as no surprise as the Treasury are driving HMRC to reduce the tax gap or what is fast becoming the tax debt mountain. The mountain of debt grew during the period of covid aided by the introduction of the Bounce Bank Loan (BBL) scheme. The BBL scheme would soon be considered by fraudsters as a free money scheme. This is evidenced by the numerous fraudulent BBL applications that have been uncovered post covid. HMRC has recently achieved its first successful BBL scheme criminal prosecution.
• Information from other government departments
HMRC has a variety of information sources to identify, undeclared income, including Connect its sophisticated software. However, HMRC don’t need recourse to Connect in many cases because most taxpayers lack any form of sophistication and are just awaiting HMRC detection. Some basic HMRC approaches include:
1) Tax return related matters – tax return filed late, tax paid late, or errors on tax return
Financial
Maybe it is this miniscule impact on the tax gap that leads errant taxpayers and fraudsters to ask rhetorically, “how will they (HMRC) find out?” The truthful answer is, it is not a question of finding out but why should taxpayers not be compliant?
In addition to undisclosed property income seven common pathways into a HMRC tax investigations are:
• Business investigation
• Information from relatives or the general public

Although, HMRC expects this new approach to save some £270m of tax evasion over the next five years. The saving of £54m pa is miniscule when benchmarked against the £32bn tax gap.

28 SE21 - September 2022
W ith pride in the roarsome efforts of England’s Lionesses generating a big spike of interest in women’s football, it is a good time indeed to acquaint yourselves with our very own rampant team of galácticas - Dulwich Hamlet Women. The Hamlet play in the London and South East Women’s premier league, alongside clubs such as Fulham, Millwall and Sutton. And with some new players joining old favourites in this year’s team hopes are high among the loyal band of supporters that the the Pink and Blues can improve on last year’s mid-table finish. Home matches are played at Champion Hill, usually on a Sunday at 2pm, and tickets are £4 adults, £2 concessions with young people under thirteen getting in free. Crowds are smaller than the men’s team, but with an average attendance of between around 300, the atmosphere is as rocking as it is friendly.
September gives you two opportunities to see the Daughters of Edgar Kail play at home: Sutton on the 4th and Millwall on the 25th. Try it, you’ll like it; though the football is spicy. Meanwhile, the sons of Edgar Kail are well into their league fixtures, showing some early season promise. The first game of the season saw East Dulwich’s finest take on Braintree Town, Dulwich Hamlet FC www.dulwichhamletfc.london @DulwichHamletFC | info@dhst.org.uk | 07951 640099 @dhstorg
winning 2-1 under the searing summer sun in front of a big broiler of a crowd with the late winner from coming from new boy Jayden Clarke. September will see a couple of home games for The Hamlet: 10 September against Weymouth and then a few days later the rare pleasure of an under the lights mid-week game against Hemel Hempstead Town. Sweet. Now, do you know someone who would like to walk out with the teams at Champion Hill? Well the Hamlet are always on the look out for children or groups of children to walk out with the women’s and men’s teams. And it’s completely free. All you have to do is take a look at upcoming fixtures and choose the game you’re interested in. So whether you’re an individual, school, football team or community group, email community@ dulwichhamletfc.co.uk with the child’s or children’s full name, age and preferred fixture or fixtures.

Iam getting enquiries from expectant mums and anxious partners, all wondering how their dog and new baby will get along. In the coming months I will be giving you top tips on what to do and what to avoid and, most of all, how to ensure the new baby is an object of your dog’s respect rather than viewed as the latest squeaky toy, or worse. Remember, dogs are experts at reading us humans and if you are pregnant, you will be moving differently, acting differently and, yup, you’ll smell different too. Your pooch already knows changes are afoot. So, it makes sense to have aWeplan.will look at all the key stages, from preparation before birth, to toddler territory - when baby begins to move around and explore and when some dogs begin to wake up to the fact that the new, shrieking creature, with its jerky movements and insatiable appetite for everything the dog would prefer is his, is here to stay. So, don’t delay, do your homework now. The sooner you begin the easier it will be.
• Get your dog used to the new gadgets, smells, and noises associated with a baby.
• Decide the rules of your house. Which rooms can the dog use? Can he use furniture? Be clear and be •consistent.Traindaily.
• Get a baby noise CD to get your dog used to gurgles and cries. Expose him to the smell of baby powder and lotion. Erect new baby equipment and
