Festival News

he Dulwich Festival is just around the corner, running from 12 to 21 May. Don’t miss the opportunity to book your tickets to attend one of the many events taking place on your doorstep. From music, walks, talks, theatre, fabulous fairs and the truly wonderful Artists’ Open House there is something for everyone to enjoy. Broadcaster and journalist Robin Lustig will be in conversation with Deputy Political Editor for BBC News, John Pienaar, exploring extraordinary tales from the world of journalism. This year’s musical calendar caters to all tastes, from a fascinating performance of Walton’s ‘Façade’ by the Bloomsbury Ensemble of London, with additional music by Haydn, Stravinsky and Mozart; internationally recognised organist Paul Derrett; indie-folk quintet Patch & The Giant; blues Birds, bees, bats and trees, all make their homes amongst us. Robins, wrens, owls and oaks. Small home, tall home, wet or warm home. Is it a place or is it a feeling; must home always have a ceiling?

The Dulwich Festival is inviting children of all ages to enter this year’s Children’s Art Competition.

t’s April and as this is traditionally a time for spring-cleaning, I booked myself in for a root tidy up at Jo Partridge’s on North Cross Road because let’s face it, I can clean behind my fridge anytime… and one day I really, really will! Perhaps Becca Teers can help motivate me to take up more positive habits at the launch party for her new book ‘Unlimited’. Becca is a trained life coach and she is hosting a book launch upstairs at the East Dulwich Tavern on 27th April where you can purchase a signed copy of her book, have a glass of Prosecco and listen to live music from singer-songwriter, Kitty Montague. We wish Becca every success with her new venture. The great and the good of East Dulwich got together at The Palmerston last month to celebrate a not-so-new venture - 12 years of SE22 magazine – WOW! Sadly, I had a diary clash with The Husband and in the absence of an available babysitter, I wasn’t able to attend this year. However, I did meet up with Angela for a coffee at Blue Mountain the following morning and she was surprisingly very fresh faced! We were joined by Anna Gryce, who is not only the President of the East Dulwich WI, but is also the House of Colour Personal Stylist & Colour Consultant for our area. Anna invited us both to a pop-up shopping event at The Palmerston on 7th April and you can come too! There will be a chance to view, try and buy the colourful new shoe collection from Noë. We had a sneak preview and I already have my eye on a pair of fuchsia ankle boots. You certainly won’t miss me on the school run! With Easter school holidays now upon us, there’s plenty to do locally with kids (although perhaps not in hot pink ankle boots). The Horniman Museum is running some fantastic children’s events over Easter, including The Robot

Zoo, a Mini-Beast Safari and Pond Dipping. These activities are incredibly popular so do book to avoid disappointment. I am also hoping to get along to the KNOTS exhibition at Lewisham Art House later this month to support two of my lovely school mum friends – Liz Workman (photographer) and Shiree Allen (artist). Working in print, photography, sculpture and works on paper, four artists have responded to the theme of knots. Next month, the Dulwich Festival will return for two weeks from 12 – 21 May. There is a rich and varied events programme this year and over 200 artists will be throwing open their doors to you during the Artists Open House weekends. I will be at the Dulwich Festival Fair (14 May) and the Dulwich Park Fair (21 May) with my food stall, Vasso’s Kouzina. We’ll be selling homemade Greek dips, spanakopita, baklava and kalamata olives. Grow your own herbs

here’s nothing nicer – or healthier - than cooking with fresh herbs picked from your own garden. Most are easy to grow and look fab, whether in borders or containers and raised beds. Mediterranean varieties prefer sun and free-draining soil - add coarse grit and organic matter to clay soil. Others, such as coriander, mint and parsley prefer some shade and plenty of moisture. Here’s my pick of the best.

Mint Mint can be invasive in a border, so it’s best grown in a pot. It Iikes rich moist soil and can tolerate shade. Keep picking it to encourage growth and divide it when it’s outgrown the container. Varieties include Lemon Mint, Apple Mint and Chocolate Mint – nice in puddings! Uses: Great in teas and summer drinks, with roast lamb or in Middle Eastern dishes such as couscous – I love mint sprinkled over feta and salmon before roasting.

Sage Sage has lovely silvery leaves, but needs a good prune in early spring to stop it getting leggy. There are varieties with different leaf colours, such as purple and golden sage. Uses: Great with onions in stuffing, with pork or sage butter.

Thyme Its foliage comes in colours from golden yellow to variegated silver – and is best picked before the pretty pink or purple summer flowers. Use: Use a few fresh leaves in stews and with meat such as beef burgers – also nice in minestrone soup.

Bay A handsome evergreen shrub that can be trained into a ball, pyramid or lollipop. Use: Bay leaves – fresh or dried - give a lovely flavour to stocks and soups. (Remove them before blending!)

Rosemary A must-have herb – rosemary is tough, easy to grow and has pretty blue, lilac or white flowers. It can get big but is easy to prune into a neat shape. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ has a tall habit whereas creeping prostrate varieties are good hanging over walls. Use: Great with roast lamb and roast veg.

Oregano (marjoram)

Best harvested before the pretty purple-pink flowers appear – but they’re lovely too and are a bee magnet! Use: Strip off a few of the leaves for tomato-based pasta sauce or Bolognese. Or use the woody stems to make a bouquet garni.

Chives:

Chives like well-drained soil, but can grow in heavier soils in partial shade. The flowers are so pretty, and you can eat them in salads, then cut the plant back to the ground for a second flush. Otherwise keep snipping off buds to encourage growth. Use: With a similar flavor to garlic and onions, they’ll liven up salads, eggs and cheese dishes.

Fennel

The tall feathery foliage of fennel looks lovely with other tall perennials in a border and the yellow flowers are followed by edible seeds. Use: Fresh leaves are tasty in salads and collect the dried seeds to make teas.

Basil

Unlike the others, basil is an annual. Grow in pots on a warm windowsill and avoid overwatering. You can grow it from seed or small plants – I bought a pot from the supermarket last year and divided it into five different pots. Sweet basil and Greek basil are two good varieties to look out for. Use: Delicious sprinkled on pizzas or tomato-based Mediterranean dishes or blend with pine nuts and parmesan to make your own pesto.

Gluten Free Fruit Seed Bars Friday 7th April is Walk to Work Day. In this age of growing awareness about how bad a sedentary lifestyle is for our health, walking to work can make a huge difference in our lives, our lifespans, and if enough of us do it, our environment. Here is a recipe to help you on your way! Makes 18 Bars Preparation time 15 mins Ready in 20 minutes

Ingredients • 60g sunflower seeds • 60g sesame seeds • 60g pumpkin seeds • 60g flax seeds (also known as linseeds) • 60g Pine Nuts • 100g semi-dried cranberries • 100g semi-dried blueberries • 100g gluten-free porridge oats • 2 tablespoons soft brown sugar • 1.5 teaspoons ground cinnamon • 1.5 teaspoons ground coriander • 1 x 397g tin condensed milk • 150g unsalted butter, cut into small cubes

Method 1) Preheat the oven to 1800C/3500F/gas mark 4. Line a 24cm square baking tin with baking parchment. 2) Place the seeds, fruit, oats, sugar and spices in a large bowl and mix well. 3) Put the condensed milk and butter into a bowl and place over a pan of gently simmering water. Melt together until well blended and hot. This will take about 15 minutes. 4) Stir the butter mixture into the fruit and seeds and mix really well. 5) Spoon the mixture into the tin and pack down lightly with the back of the spoon. 6) Bake for about 20 minutes, until slightly golden. 7) Remove from the oven, cool and cut into bars. Stress & your body What effect does stress have on the body? Stress is not necessarily a bad thing, but too much stress, can be very harmful to the body. So how do we learn to manage stress and what is the impact it has on our minds and bodies?

Central Nervous System The central nervous system (CNS) is comprised of the brain and the spinal cord, and can be considered the command and control centre of the human body. It communicates with the rest of the body via neurons linked to what is called the peripheral nervous system (PNS). When a stimulus is introduced to the body, receptors communicate with sensory neurons, which in turn communicate with motor neurons to affect a response within the CNS. A nervous breakdown can happen when the CNS is subjected to repeated and prolonged stress. It can also be caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain. Worry, chronic stress, fear, anxiety, nervousness and panic attacks are all symptoms of a mental breakdown, or burnout.

Allostatic Load Allostasis is the process of achieving stability (homeostasis) through physiological or behavioural change; it is the wear and tear on the body that develops over time when an individual is exposed to chronic and fluctuating stress levels. Every system in the body is affected by allostatic overload. Initially, the production of adrenaline and cortisol sharpen up the memory, keeping the individual focused in a time of danger. As the stress is repeated however, the neurons atrophy and memory becomes impaired. The immune system is impacted also; low levels of stress promote immune function by sending immune cells to the areas of the body where they are needed to defend against a pathogen. Chronic stress however, has the reverse effect of suppressing immune function, and the individual’s risk of chronic disease suddenly becomes elevated. 16 | SE22 - April 2017

Stress And Exercise If chronic stress is left unchecked it can lead to physical and mental breakdown. Now, exercise can’t directly help certain things, but it can help to improve your state of mind, help you sleep better and therefore think more clearly. Exercise has been proven to decrease the production of stressrelated hormones and increase the production of other hormones such as serotonin, adrenaline and dopamine, which together can contribute to making you feel more positive, happier and uplifted.

Anxiety, Depression And Exercise Exercise is often under-prescribed by the medical community as part of a treatment plan for anxiety and depression, but despite that is widely considered to be central to helping people manage their condition. It isn’t only the chemical responses in the region of the brain that help make people feel better about themselves, but also the physical changes can help improve one’s self-esteem and feelings of self-worth and competency.

The Brain And Exercise There are numerous positive changes to the brain that occur during and after exercise (specifically aerobic exercise). These changes occur in different parts of the brain, and in some cases the benefits are still enjoyed even after you stop exercising. One of the best ways to manage chronic stress is exercise, but it must be at the appropriate intensity, for the right time and the right type. If you are very stressed, it might be best for you to start with a gentle walk. If you’re worried about your stress levels, consult your GP as a first step.

Toxins in the home

aster is on its way and most dog owners are well aware of the tremendous harm those chocolate goodies can do to their pet if ingested, but many will be less aware to what extent the average household is filled with potentially harmful products, some of which may have an insidious effect on their pet’s health.

Human Medication

Top of the list are drugs we accidently leave lying around. Insurance data lists accidental ingestion of human medication- whether over the counter or prescription, as a major source of pet poisoning. Those little pills can look a lot like treats to dogs, cats or even pet pigs! The sugar coating on some pills make them irresistible, and talented pets can have a great time breaking into handbags, low cupboards or supposedly child proof pill boxes. Keep human medication up high in secure cupboards and drawers, beyond your pet’s reach.

Household Cleaning Agents

It is obvious that many strong household cleaners are likely to be toxic. Most pet owners will recognise the dangers of exposure to large amounts of chemical but are less aware of the long term effects of multiple small exposures to a range of cleaning products. Many products contain chemicals which give off VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). These light, airborne molecules are diffuse and easily inhaled and it is thought are associated with cancers and metabolic disorders. Our pets with their smaller lungs and faster metabolisms process and absorb the toxins into their bloodstreams much more quickly. Products like air fresheners, toilet and bathroom cleaners, drain cleaners and oven and floor cleaners are all potentially toxic to your pets. Any tiny bits of residue on floors or other surfaces may be ingested by your pet as they lick paws and fur that has come into contact with the chemicals. One exposure may do little harm but multiple exposures over time are a different matter. Keep pets in another room when products are used. Rinse and dry surfaces thoroughly. 24 | SE22 - April 2017

Plastic and Metal

Pets can munch on wiring and other ‘soft’ metal objects they find lying around; metals like zinc and lead are toxic and the results of that toxicity may not be seen for days. Plastics are another hazard and ‘greedy’ dog breeds like Labradors may enjoy chewing on plastic items such as milk cartons or children’s toys and then cannot help but follow through their gustatory activity with a swallow. Many dogs end up at the vet as a result of impaction. A startling range of household products, including plastic bags and the new £5 note, contain animal by-products, including beef products; it is thought certain pets might associate the smell of these with ‘food’.

Alcohol

Some people think it is cute to let their pet sample alcohol but animals like humans vary in their sensitivity to alcohol and even a small amount of beer could cause your pet lasting damage.

Food

Chocolate and coffee are known dangers as are grapes, raisons, various nuts, onions and garlic, but, pet owners are less aware of the dangers of food containing artificial sweeteners. The rise of the sugar tax and ways to tackle sugar related diseases like diabetes and conditions like obesity, have prompted food manufacturers to search hard for sugar substitutes. Xylitol is used in chewing gum, jams, biscuits and cakes. It is also very toxic for dogs and can lead to low blood sugar and permanent liver damage. The takeaway is that acute episodes of poisoning or toxicity are normally pretty evident and the sick animal is rushed to the vet. However, some types of toxicity will not show for days. Multiple small exposures to harmful products may cause slow damage to organs or even, it is thought, trigger some cancers. The project was inspired by Millie’s Marvellous Hats, a story in which a girl who cannot afford the hats she loves creates them from her imagination. Wherever she walks, she creates an imaginary hat inspired by what she sees around her.

“You can sit inside the images and let them trigger your own thoughts at the same time as being surrounded by everyone else’s,” said Ms Stanhope. “It’s like a whirlwind of sharing ideas. We’re really proud of our girls for receiving this runners-up prize.”

Once completed, the collages were then suspended above a central chair, so the girls could sit surrounded by everyone’s stories.

Students found inspiration in everything from national flags, food and animals to toys, consumer items and flowers. “It was really fascinating because we saw each other’s personalities,” said Ayat, Year 8. “I used pictures of the stuff I enjoy doing like knitting, gardening, art and animals.”

FA Trophy Competition

crowd of just under three thousand fans saw Dulwich Hamlet entertain National Conference team Macclesfield Town in the quarter-finals of this seasons the FA Trophy competition, the furthest the club has progressed for three decades. A wonderful strike from open play from Ash Carew in the 87th minute sealed a replay for the team from East Dulwich. With the initial date of the replay having been postponed due to snow, some 200 fans made the 10 hour round trip to see the trophy run come to a valiant end with a two - nil defeat against the home side. With Dulwich reaching the latter stages of three cup competions this season, league games have been few and far in the past month resulting in the the team slipping out of the play-off places. With a significant number of games on their rivals there is every confidance around the club that the team will make the Ryman Premier League playoffs for the third year run On Saturday 11 March, Dulwich Hamlet Football Club once again celebrated International Women’s Day (IWD) when they beat Merstham FC by five goals to nil at Champion Hill. The day was an opportunity to celebrate the contribution that women have made to Dulwich Hamlet FC and our local community. To commemorate the occasion the club commissioned a special one-off purple kit in lieu of their famous pink and blue colours and both teams were lead onto the field by young female footballers from the offical DHFC charity partner for 2016/17, ‘Football Beyond Borders’. After the game there was the opportunity for fans to own one of the match-worn purple shirts by entering a silent auction for the kit worn by the starting XI on the day. All the proceeds of the silent auction, including bucket collects on the day, will go to IWD’s charity partners Catalyst and WAGGGS. On the last evening of February, a Dulwich Hamlet squad took on a Centrepoint XI team in a recent charity match hosted at Champion

Every penny raised that evening was handed over to Centerpoint, a charity in the United Kingdom, which provides accommodation and support to homeless people from 16 to 25.

ATED or not ATED?

ith 31st January long since passed most tax payers thought they were home and dry. However, this is not the case for the growing numbers of taxpayers who have purchased residential properties via a limited company. As a result of ATED your deadline is fast approaching. ATED is not associated with any youth culture of yesteryear. ATED is the acronym for ‘Annual Tax on Enveloped Dwellings’ (ATED) a tax charged on 'non-natural persons' (a company, a partnership with a company member, or a collective investment scheme) which hold an interest in one or more UK residential properties and where that single property is worth more than £500,000 (since 1st April 2016). ATED came into effect on 1st April 2013 as an anti -avoidance scheme against individuals who acquired high value UK residential properties through non- natural persons. The property is said to be “enveloped” because it sits within a corporate “wrapper” or “envelope”. ATED is charged in set property value bands for 'chargeable periods' from 1st April – 31 March. The payment of the ATED annual charge is due and payable by 30th April. This leaves all non-natural persons with a 2017-18 ATED tax liability less than 30 days to prepare their ATED return and make payment to HMRC. Interestingly, the penalties for failing to make ATED returns or for making incorrect ATED returns are the same as for personal income tax returns. The 2017-18 ATED tax charges are set out below.

Although ATED is based upon property value bandings, it is necessary to emphasise that the ATED is not a replacement for the local Council Tax. The ATED is an additional and separate tax charge 38 | SE22 - April 2017

not associated with any local Council Tax. Moreover, the property values do not remain fixed at the 2012 valuations as properties are required to be re-valued every five years for ATED compliance. A separate ATED return must be submitted to HMRC for each property that falls within the ATED regime. There are several allowable reliefs from ATED. However these must be claimed on an ATED relief declaration form and submitted to HMRC at the same time as the ATED return, on or before 30th April. Each ATED relief has been assigned a separate form by HMRC. Therefore a separate relief form must be completed and submitted for each relief being claimed. However, where one particular relief is being claimed for more than one property then these may be submitted on the same relief declaration form. HMRC property valuation bands are based upon the market value as 1st April 2012. However, any property acquired since 1st April 2012, requires the application of the open market value as at the date of acquisition. In addition, where a property owner believes their property falls within a 10% tolerance zone of their band, they can apply to HMRC for a pre-return banding check. However, as the time scale for processing these is a minimum of 30 days, this may not be a viable option for those with 2017-18 ATED liabilities. Non-natural persons who have breathed a sigh of relief thinking they’ve been saved by the bell as their purchase has yet to be completed, should read on. Where a property is acquired after the 1st April, an ATED return and payment date will be due 30 days from the purchase date. The liability will be based upon an apportionment of the annual charge. However, purchasers of a new build are granted 90 days from purchase date to submit their ATED return and make payment. The increasing trend in non-natural persons purchasing buy-to-let property portfolios may reduce personal income tax liabilities. However the personal tax tail should not wag the dog. These businesses will become Business Patrons of the vibrant charity, which has been working in Southwark for 23 years to combat loneliness and isolation among older people. The charity recruits volunteers from the local community to offer free services to people over 60, including over 20 activity groups, weekly befriending visits, a volunteer driving service and support for people living with dementia. Link Age Southwark currently has over 350 active volunteers supporting nearly 600 older people in the borough. he Royal Mail sorting office on Silvester Road is under threat of closure. Royal Mail is considering whether to close it due to large volumes of parcels and difficulties parking their vans. Instead, they are considering operating from the Peckham sorting office and making us all traipse there and back when we miss a delivery. I have met with Royal Mail and highlighted how terrible this would be for local residents and businesses. I have suggested that if necessary we could consider allocating parking spaces on the public highway to help fix this problem. If you agree please share how inconvenient this would be for you so I can relate this to Royal Mail.

With Spring in the air, it seems a great time to remind everyone about how to report local issues that make East Dulwich less pleasant. Such street scene issues have been shown to encourage criminal acts potentially creating a negative cycle for our patch. As local councilors, we report lots of issues as we find them but we really need your help to report issues quicker to make our area less attractive to those perpetrating these crimes. If you spot any flytipping, littering, dog poo, graffiti, flyposting please report this to Southwark Council ASAP. Sadly, the current council no longer takes such reports via telephone but you can still report these via the internet at www.southwark.gov.uk/street-care You can also report potholes and broken street lights. If you find you don’t get a reasonable response please escalate the issue to me at cllrjamesbarber@gmail.com

Pudding Club I’ve recently heard of a great idea I’m hoping other streets will copy. Pudding Club. Every six weeks the mums on a particular street get together to share puddings. They rotate the home hosting this club. How To Generate & Sustain A Love Of Sport In Your Child

e are all well versed in the benefits our children gain from regular sport and physical activity. But how do we encourage them to love sport from a young age, and then sustain that enthusiasm? Kevin Molloy, Director of Sport at Alleyn’s Junior School in Dulwich provides some top tips to help you and your child get the ball rolling.

MAKE IT FUN There is plenty of time for learning techniques and tactics. Let children experience the thrill of moving and playing. As the great West Indian cricketer Sir Vivian Richards said, “Once they have experienced the thrill of smashing the ball to all parts, the pain of getting out will be enough motivation for them to seek you out and learn how to be patient and defend.”

FUNDAMENTALS Don’t jeopardise the fun element but do encourage the basics. Agility, balance, co-ordination and speed are attributes that will stand children in good stead. These core physical qualities, allied with the natural motivation to be active, mean your child is now well on the road towards being physically active for life.

VARIETY IS THE SPICE OF LIFE It’s important to recognise the value of participating in a range of physical and sporting activities. The transferable skills children pick up from an enjoyable and varied schedule will ultimately produce more motivated, adaptable and skilled performers over time.

KEEP THINGS CHILD CENTRED It may challenge you, but keep your child at the centre of this journey. When they start to show some promise, it’s helpful to be aware of the potential slippery slope that can take parents to a point where success means more to them than it does to the child. Your child is driving, on this journey you can be the sat nav if they get a little lost! 48 | SE22 - April 2017

FAILURE IS OPPORTUNITY TO GROW The sports world is fantastic for providing chances to experience success and failure and learn from both. Your child will suffer setbacks along the way. Encourage them to be resilient enough to bounce back with lessons learned. You will want to protect and defend them of course but remember this is their journey. Don’t prepare the road for your child, prepare your child for the road.
