I am well and truly feeling the Christmas spirit putting together this issue. I have drawn the line on listening to Christmas tunes just yet! But with all the fantastic Christmas theme events we have on locally this month, it is difficult not to feel Christmassy. We have two more pages of Christmas Fairs and Markets page 22 & 23. It is, of course, the return of the East Dulwich Christmas Cracker on Saturday 1st December, find out more on page 22. Remember there are more events, stories and news at www. arounddulwich.co.uk. The Last Word goes to Rev Raymond Baudon who is the curate at St John’s East Dulwich on Goose Green. Find out more on page 48. So all that is left for me to say is Merry Christmas and a very Happy New Year!

Saturdays 1, 8, 15, 22, 29 December: Work on Emmanuel Wildlife Garden Every Saturday from 2-4pm. Replanting at Emmanuel Wildlife Garden has been extended to the Church Roadside Garden (Clive Road). This is already a popular meeting place with its two benches facing each other. Now it is planned to make it even more popular with the introduction of scented plants. Gifts of small scented shrubs and scented ground cover plants would be welcome. In the case of the Wildlife Garden which runs off Chalford Road a wild plum and a wild pear are needed to complete its native orchard. Meanwhile careful hand weeding has to be carried out every Saturday over a recreation of the South Downs with three species of wild orchids. Norwood Wildlife Team leader, John Cotter, needs very patient volunteers to deal with this. The turn-out is every Saturday 2-4p.m. Come rain or shine. Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

The Gardener’s Tool Kit Having the right tools really can turn gardening from a chore to a pleasure. So if you fancy putting something gardening-related on your Christmas wish-list or are thinking of buying a present for a green-fingered friend, take your pick from these “must have” tools.

Secateurs

This is key for most gardeners – a sharp, good quality pair will make all the difference to pruning and harvesting herbs and flowers. I like Felco, which last a lifetime if you look after them, but there are many other good varieties. For those with weak hands or arthritis, ratcheting pruners are a great choice. Try to buy quality, keep them clean and dry them if they get wet, so they don’t rust.

Gardening Gloves

Protect your hands from mud and thorns with a good pair of gloves. Make sure they fit snuggly, particularly for fiddly jobs like tying in climbers. Bamboo gloves are light and stretchy, as are Showa Floreo. Thermal gardening gloves are cosy for winter and if you’re pruning roses leather is best.

Hand Trowel and Fork

Whether you have a large garden or a balcony with pots, hand tools such as trowels and forks are probably the most useful tools of all. Trowels are great for shovelling compost, planting and digging holes, while hand forks can be better for digging up or dividing plants, as they’re gentler on roots. Again look out for good quality and, a comfortable wooden handle and a stainless steel blade for durability.

Rake

If your lawn gets covered in leaves, it’s worth buying a leaf rake – the ones with large fan shaped plastic heads. They’re inexpensive and a super efficient way of tidying up the lawn. Removing fallen leaves is also important for lawn health as dead leaves block light from grass weakening the root system, as well as attracting pests and encouraging mould to grow. Garden rakes have springy thin metal tines and tend to spike leaves – they’re best for removing mossy thatch in grass in spring and autumn, and general garden debris from under shrubs. 12 | SE22 - December 2018

Pruning Saw

These lightweight saws are fab for keeping trees or large woody shrubs in check, easily removing larger branches that are too thick for secateurs or loppers. The folding ones that you can carry in your pocket are especially handy.

Digging Spade and Fork

A decent long handled spade is useful for digging and planting larger plants and trees. Again try buying a quality spade, with a good strong handle and stainless steel head, which is smoother, easier to garden with and clean, and less susceptible to rust. For digging up established plants, it’s better to use a long handled fork, as they’re more forgiving on roots.

Topiary Shears

These hand shears are great – bigger than secateurs and smaller than regular shears, they make topiary a pleasure.

Hoe

A hoe is a great time (and back) saver for weeding – especially if you hoe off weeds when they’re small. Hoes with narrower blades are useful for smaller spaces. Other weeding tools include a hand weeder, designed to pull out weeds with tap root such as dandelions . Or you can use The Hori Hori or weeding knife, a combo knife/trowel that cuts, digs and weeds. Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Filo Pastry Mince Pies For the Mincemeat • 3 Granny Smiths (or other tart eating apples), peeled, cored and cut into 1cm / ½” chunks • 1 ripe pear, peeled, cored and cut into 1cm / ½” chunks • 100g / 3½ oz raisins • 100ml / 3½ fl oz apple juice • 75g / 2¾ oz dried cranberries • 50g / 1¾ oz pecan nuts finely chopped • 2 tsp ground ginger • 2 tsp ground cinnamon • Pinch ground cloves • Big pinch freshly grated nutmeg • 1 vanilla pod, seeds scraped out • 1 orange, zest only, finely grated • 1cm / ½ in piece fresh ginger, very finely chopped • A few twists cracked black pepper • 3 tbsp cider, calvados, rum or brandy (optional)

For the Pies • Vegetable oil, in a spray bottle • 12 sheets filo pastry • 1 egg, lightly beaten (alternatively use a little melted butter or vegetable oil) • Icing sugar for dusting Makes 12 mince pies

Method

1) Preheat the oven to 1800C / 1600C(fan) / 3500F / Gas 4. 2) Place a baking tray into the oven to heat up – this helps to stop your pies having a soggy base! 3) Grease a 12-hole muffin tin with a little spray oil and set aside. 4) Put all the mincemeat ingredients into a saucepan over a medium heat and allow to cook gently, stirring occasionally for about 10 minutes or until the apples begin to soften. 5) Remove from the heat and leave the mixture to infuse while you make the pies. 6) Lay the sheets of filo pastry out on top of each other and cut them in stacks to make 12cm / 4½” squares of filo. Keep any filo not being worked on under a damp tea towel so that it doesn’t dry out. 14 | SE22 - December 2018

7) Line each hole of the muffin tin with three squares of filo. Take a square at a time and press it into the hole, each one slightly turned so the pastry case edges look like a star. Make sure to push the pastry down so it goes right down to the bottom and sides of each muffin hole. 8) After lining the tin, you should be left with 12 squares of filo – reserve these under a damp tea towel for now. 9) Spray each stack in the tin with a little oil and bake in the oven for five minutes until crisp and pale golden. Then divide the filling evenly among the cases. 10) Take the remaining squares of filo, scrunch each one up lightly and place one on top of each pie so that it looks like a scrunched-up tissue. Brush them lightly with beaten egg or melted butter. 11) Place in the oven on top of the heated baking sheet for 8-10 minutes or until the pies are crisp and golden. 12) Once ready, remove the pies from the oven and dust with a little icing sugar! Enjoy!

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

Is it good for me to take a nap or not?

I

used to have a very dismissive attitude towards napping. I thought no, I don’t need to sleep. Sleep’s for the evening. But I completely changed my mind. I equate sleep to going out for a long day and taking a spare battery to boost your mobile phone. Taking a nap’s the same thing. If I’ve got a long hard day, a creative day, or I’ve had a bad night’s sleep, no problem. I’ll just go and have a 20 - 30 minute nap if I can. Recharge my batteries and then crack on again. Is taking a nap good for you? Science confirms that yes, it is. But there are some conditions. A nap is ideally taken between 12 and 2pm. Any later than that, and you might be cutting it a bit fine, chipping into your evening sleep. It’s very good to bolster a poor night’s sleep. But 20 to 30 minutes won’t take you deep into that sleep cycle of REM sleep. It’s been found to improve focus and creativity - there are some real positives. Focus is something that we would all like to have a little bit more of, and it will boost this in the middle of the day - plus creativity. For problem solving, we know that sleep is really beneficial. There’s a myriad of studies that have found that sleeping boosts creativity and helps us to solve problems. It also helps us to retain information - that’s another real benefit to sleep, particularly napping.

Try and think about having a polyphasic sleep pattern if you can. If some of you work in offices, it’s not always possible. Although what I am doing is trying to campaign for people in corporates, is to bring in sleep pods, sleep centres and recovery rooms, so that we can go and take that nap if we need to. But, we’re some way off that. Think about polyphasic sleeping, if you can. Certainly at the weekend, can you catch a nap for 20, 30 minutes on a Saturday or a Sunday? Polyphasic sleeping is sleeping in stages; maybe it’s getting four sleep cycles, about four hours or six hours of sleep in the evening, and then catching another nap in the afternoon to boost your sleep. That would be polyphasic sleeping. If you are taking a nap, the final thing I suggest is having an eye mask and quietening your mind, just to make the most of that short period you’ve got. The eye mask will just block out any light which can encourage the brain to think it’s awake and not sleeping. That of course is a problem with taking a nap. It’s out of our circadian rhythm. So the answer is yes. The studies have found that taking a nap is good for you. If you can, try it. Cap it at 30 minutes, wear an eye mask, and just quieten the mind down a little bit before, so you can go off relatively quickly.

Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas December Round-up

Y

ou better watch out, you better not cry, better not pout, I'm telling you why… Santa Claus is coming to town! I can’t promise I’ll make it through the entire merry season without crying (almost certainly not without pouting) and after 9-years of Santa Claus, I am starting to wonder whether this will be the year my son decides he no longer requires me to pretend that Santa does even come to town at all *sobs* Until then, I am throwing myself into the festivities with as much Christmas spirit as I can muster! I am all over the Winter fairs, elbow-deep in mince pies, and my cup runneth over with mulled wine. The Link Age Southwark 25th Birthday Gala at Dulwich College last month promised a night of glitz and glamour and it did not disappoint! Over £20,000 was raised for this wonderful charity to support their work in helping older people maintain active lives in the community. Meanwhile, there were gold catsuits, pink catsuits and jokes galore at the Scummy Mummies live comedy show at the Catford Broadway Theatre. Tickets are now on sale for their special Christmas show at The Ivy House in Nunhead. I was honoured and delighted to have been asked to join the judging panel of the Love East Dulwich photo competition. The competition was launched to celebrate everything that’s great about East Dulwich. Local residents were asked to submit their favourite snaps capturing the spirit of SE22 and the 15 winning photos will form an outdoor exhibition stretching from East Dulwich station down to Lordship Lane. This project was funded by a grant from the London Borough of Southwark. There’s so much to look forward to this month too! The East Dulwich Christmas Cracker (1 December) returns with an exciting array of entertainment from choirs and performance groups, exclusive offers from local traders, a wonderfully seasonal North Cross Road market and the return of the delightful Children’s Christmas Treasure Hunt. The Handmade Collective - a group of South London artists, designers and makers - will be celebrating and promoting art and creativity in the local area with their pop-up shop at 57 North Cross Road (1 December).

Join the Dulwich Village Christmas Stocking (2 December) for a fun-filled and free event for all the family in Dulwich Village. Highlights include carol singing, children’s theatre, art and craft workshops, storytelling, children’s disco and performances from local musical groups. The 17th Dulwich Luncheon Club Charity lunch will take place at The Palmerston again this year (6 December) and will raise much-needed funds for Link Age Southwark. Tickets are just £33 for two courses including wine and a £5 donation from each ticket sold will go straight to the charity. School winter fairs are a fantastic way to get a big dollop of Christmas cheer! The 8th of December is a popular date with Fairlawn, St John’s and Heber schools all hosting a day of festive family fun. Details of these local events and so many more can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich. Bring on the twinkling lights, the sequin dresses and the sparkling wine! Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

The Return to

Champion Hill

W

hilst the playing squad continues to try to find some consistency on the pitch, the team off the field have been continuously working hard over the past 9 months to get them back playing games at Champion Hill. In early October an agreement with the current owners of the ground, Southwark council and Dulwich Hamlet was reached, resulting in the club being given a lease to return to its home in East Dulwich before Christmas. Joint Supporters’ Trust Chairs, Alex Atack and Duncan Chapman commenting on the clubs return “As we’re sure you are aware by now, the Club is looking forward to our return to Champion Hill next month.” They continued, “Whilst we are obviously delighted that the Club is able to return to Champion Hill, we must acknowledge the months of hard work behind the scenes by so many people. First, Liam Hickey and Tom Cullen, who stepped up to become the Club’s Directors when we had to leave Champion Hill. Familiar faces to all who attend the matches, Liam and Tom took on the almighty challenge of running the Club when Meadow handed over control. They worked tirelessly to find us our temporary home whilst bringing investment into the Club which allowed us to continue to compete despite reduced matchday revenues. Liam has since stepped down, and been replaced by Ben Clasper (CEO of our shirt sponsors Rogo Scott). Recently, Ben has been at the forefront of driving negotiations around our return to Champion Hill. The amount of work that has gone into the conversations between Southwark Council and Meadow Partners, alongside the Trust, cannot be underestimated and without Ben representing the Club at the meeting on 22nd October, we are confident that we wouldn’t be returning to Champion Hill on such favourable terms.” “On the topic of the meeting on 22nd October, we must acknowledge the instrumental role of Tracey Crouch MP (the former Sports Minister). Everyone connected with the Club was delighted by her statement in the House of Commons in March, offering support and the opportunity for mediation over the dispute. Ideally it wouldn’t have come to it, but to see Tracey follow through on her words and call a mediation meeting, which ultimately led to

30 | SE22 - December 2018

our return, was fantastic and couldn’t have come at a better time given her resignation last week. A little closer to home, both Helen Hayes MP and Harriet Harman MP have been immensely supportive of the Club’s return to East Dulwich. Lord Roy Kennedy also spoke up for us in the chamber of the House of Lords and drummed up support in the corridors of Westminster armed only with a smile and a Hamlet scarf! We look forward to welcoming them all back to Champion Hill when we return.” So many supporters and members of the local community have been instrumental in driving the campaign to get the club back to SE22. Some, through organised campaigns such as SaveDHFC, have ensured our plight is at the forefront of everyone’s minds. The 12th Man scheme has contributed hugely to the playing budget and allowed the Club to not just survive but also to gain promotion to and compete in the National League South As part of preparing Champion Hill for the return of the club, the Supporters’ Trust recently put out a call for volunteers to help clean up the stadium. This took place on Saturday 10 November, as our National Conference South game away game against Truro City was moved to the Sunday. Over 80 fellow supporters and community members got stuck into tasks like sweeping, scraping and weeding - inside and outside the stadium. Thanks to everyone who was available to assist on the day - you all fully deserved the fantastic food provided by local East Dulwich businesses Meat Liquor and Franco Manca. Talking of local businesses, The East Dulwich Tavern held another General Knowledge Quiz Night and Raffle in aid of Dulwich Hamlet’s 12th Man fund raising scheme. Entry on the night was £2.00 per person, with the addition of some great raffle prizes, £810 was raised for the football club on the night. For upcoming fixtures and confirmation of the first game back at Champion Hill, please visit the club website: dulwichhamletfc.co.uk www.dulwichhamletfc.london @DulwichHamletFC | info@dhst.org.uk 07951 640099 @dhstorg

Education News from Alleyn's

Back in the Swing Stuart Turner, Head of the Lower School at Alleyn’s Senior School, tells us how to get your child successfully back into the swing of school life after their Christmas break. As the holidays are approaching children across the land are excited. However, the return to school will eventually arrive and there are a few things you and your child can do to aid a smooth start to the new term.

Rest, Rest & Rest The holidays should be fun and busy but we want children to return to school well rested and full of energy. This means that it is important to factor in some down time. The key, for me, is a quiet day or two at the start and several very quiet days leading into the new term.

Avoid Nasty Surprises I believe holidays should be work-free before the GCSE years. However, sometimes children defer term-time work to the holiday. It is worth children double checking what they need to do and getting it out of the way before the holiday season is well underway so that there are no nasty surprises on the return to school.

Manage Social Arrangements This can be a tricky one for parents. Hopefully, your child will be motivated to maintain the social side of school over the break, and this can allow them to cement and maintain friendships. Try to keep a balance between rest, play and other family commitments, so encourage your child to make some social plans before the end of term, but not too many!

a look through their school calendar for the term. Most schools have this information available on their websites. It is useful to plot significant academic and co-curricular commitments into the family calendar - along with important social events, of course!

Reinvigorate Study Areas

Essential items might have been misplaced throughout the course of a busy term, and this is a good time track them down. Devote a little time to ensure that all uniform is washed, and all stationery and equipment are still present and in working order. Involve your child in doing this too – it is good practice for life after school!

As the return to school draws near, make sure they have a designated distraction-free zone for study at home which is clutter free and well organised. Think about adding something new to the space like cushions, plants or posters, so that it is inviting and productive.

Check Uniform & Equipment

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

Possessive Behaviour In Dogs

O

ne of the most difficult issues I see in behaviour work is the dog that has become aggressive about guarding food, objects, space, other dogs or even people. The resource guarding dog does not want to share the stuff he values with anyone. Occasionally these dogs become so anxious about a perceived need to compete for possession, that they use serious aggression to take control. The instinct to control resources is strong in all of us because it is necessary for survival. However sharing our home with a pet dog that has started to guard proximity to something as innocuous as paper tissues as though his life depended on it, or that lunges and bites anyone near his empty food bowl, is a recipe for disaster. We do not know why some dogs become resource guarders. The most likely explanation is that some dogs have a genetic predisposition triggered by events in the course of development. Litters of pups fed from the same food bowl may learn to compete for food early on but while this tendency may emerge around other dogs it need not around humans. As ever, the correct approach begins in puppyhood when owners need to equip themselves with a reasonable awareness of canine body language. Watch out for tiny signs like the puppy freezing (tension and stillness without looking at you) if you approach him while he is eating or has something in his mouth. The pup may also watch you out of the corner of his eye with the white showing (whale eye). The pup will look slightly wary, some may even growl. Don’t panic, congratulate yourself on having noticed that your pup is not unsure of your intentions around stuff he values (generally food and chews). You are now able to do some training that will ensure your pup learns to trust you. First homes have to be puppy proofed. The quickest way to ignite possessive behaviour is to constantly chase the pup down whenever he steals something, forcibly removing said item from his jaws. Pups quickly learn that stealing objects gets owner attention. Whenever this happens only take action if that item is incredibly dangerous or

38 | SE22 - December 2018

incredibly valuable. Otherwise ignore the pup or get him interested in something he is allowed to chew. Make a mental note to better puppy proof your home in future and start to train a solid ‘leave’ or ‘drop’ command. See my article. Train your pup to enjoy people approaching his food bowl. Ensure outside of training your pup is left in peace to eat his grub. Please do not practise removing his bowl while he is eating- this is likely to create resource guarding not reduce it! Place your pup’s food bowl in an area of low traffic and away from children. Next approach him while he is eating and gently say his name; if he looks up praise him and carefully toss a tidbit beside or into his bowl. Start at a distance from the bowl your pup seems comfortable with and over a number of meal times gradually decrease that distance, until you can get right beside the bowl before you give him the extra tasty morsel. Chances are that pup now wags his tail when you approach. Bingo, he has started to feel people coming to his bowl are not potential competitors at all but there to feed him yummy things. If your dog exhibits serious aggression around food, space, other dogs or people, contact a reputable behaviourist. Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining.co.uk

Financial Matters with David Frederick

Ten Christmas Money Saving Tips

H

ere we are again, the countdown to Christmas. In some households this marks the annual spending spree, especially those populated by children as we become dazzled and excited by the wonderful array of shiny objects and deals. Our friendly high street stores, currently fighting for survival are bending over backwards to help us spend and credit card companies are sharing the season of goodwill by offering increased card limits like confetti. Some of our local residents well versed in the art of cautious spending recently shared their Christmas spending tips to keep us grounded. Jackie Stewart a financial coach with a passion to help others manage their finances started the ball rolling with her five tips.

Kemi Adeboye and Suzanne Worrica, from the Paxton Green TimeBank, tips were underpinned by recycling and the use of personal creative skills.

Secret Santa

It is easy to make homemade pickles such as onion marmalade, pickled onions and beetroot according to the Paxton Green pair. Homemade pickles can be a great personalised accompaniment to the cold meats. The only requirement was investing a little time and forward planning. Moreover, prepared properly and stored correctly homemade pickles can have a longer lifespan than a few days.

If you have a large family, have a secret Santa with a set budget. An idea which is not unfamiliar to most employees as this is often played out in the work place at Christmas.

Gift Token Be strategic and buy a small token gift such as a book and offer to buy the ‘real’ present in January when the sales descend upon us once the book has been read. This provides a great incentive and means to promote more reading.

Loyalty Points Use loyalty points collected throughout the year to buy the Christmas dinner. The points have already been accumulated therefore it is not any additional spending.

Bring a dish When cooking for a large numbers of visitors over Christmas, simply ask everyone to bring a dish and a bottle. This increases the variety on offer and reduces the stress of cooking.

Early start It may be already too late for this year but Jackie is an advocate of starting to save for Christmas in January. 40 | SE22 - December 2018

Make a gift Making a gift rather than buying a gift for someone. Self-made gifts are more personal and as echoed by Kemi, “made with love.”

Make cards and accessories Making gifts also extends to making Christmas cards and gift tags, according to Suzanne. This is a tip that she inherited from her mother as she grew up using mum’s serrated scissors making gift tags from discarded Christmas cards.

Homemade pickles

Book early As a festive season traveller, Suzanne championed the early purchase of rail tickets for those who undertake long distance travel at Christmas. In combination with the use of Nectar points (a tip echoed earlier by Jackie), can save travellers up to one-third of the normal fare.

Coupon Books A potential family favourite is Kemi’s making your own coupons booklet for family and friends. The coupons may be for undertaking any household chore, such as emptying the bins, doing the washing up or ironing. With these tips Christmas can be an enjoyable season of goodwill and free from excessive spending and the worry of debt to start 2019. SE22 Councillors with James McAsh

December News Hi, I’m James McAsh: one of your local councillors for Goose Green, alongside Victoria Olisa and Charlie Smith. It’s now over six months since you gave us the honour of electing us your representatives, and we have been working hard to justify your trust.

Local Schools We are lucky to have a number of fantastic schools in Goose Green, all so different, and as a primary school teacher myself I have taken an active interest in supporting them. During the election I promised to meet with every state school in the ward within the first six months and I managed it - with three days to spare! I want to help the schools to access cultural opportunities provided by the council, and to deal with issues relating to air pollution and road safety.

Controlled Parking Zone – Yes Or No? Parking is becoming more difficult as the local population rises. This is especially true around the train station and on Lordship Lane. One way of dealing with this is through controlled parking zones (CPZ), but they divide opinion. In January the council will launch a consultation on whether to introduce a CPZ in the East Dulwich area. All residents on affected streets will be contacted. Your councillors will only support the implementation of a CPZ if it has the support of local residents. Respond and be heard.

Our New Library While austerity is forcing libraries across the country to close, I am proud that Southwark Council is opening new ones. Grove Vale library (next to East Dulwich Station) is opening this month! Be sure to visit.

Barry Road Safety Measures Over the summer Cllr Smith, Cllr Maggie Browning of Dulwich Hill and I joined a group of local residents and the police to monitor speeds on Barry Road. The road has a limit of 20mph but some vehicles exceeded 35mph. The Council has allocated funding to make the road safer and the consultation of local residents has just concluded. Watch this space. 42 | SE22 - December 2018

Meeting with St John’s and St Clement’s Primary School.

Empty Shops I am concerned that there are a number of empty shops on our high street. East Dulwich has a great reputation for high quality independent businesses, and I would not want to lose this. But rents are rocketing and it is hard to survive. I am keen to do some work on this issue in conjunction with local residents and businesses. What do you think?

Dulwich Hamlet Football Club After lengthy negotiations, the Council and DHFC have secured agreement from the owner of the football grounds – Meadow – for the club to return to Dulwich. Excellent news! Get in touch if you have an opinion on any of the above – or anything else at all. Let us know what you think about these and any other concerns you have in the Goose Green area, or relating to Southwark Council. Goose Green residents can contact me at: @mcash James.McAsh@southwark.gov.uk | You can also visit us at one of our surgeries at 7pm on the 2nd and 4th Thursdays of the month at East Dulwich Community Centre on Darrell Road. The Last Word – Rev Raymond Baudon Coffee or tea? Where? After a detox juice cleanse(!) I stopped drinking tea or coffee in April. Not drinking tea raises a few eyebrows in my line of work but I’ll often have a herbal tea at Tart or Aneto.

The best meal I’ve ever had… Not one specific meal but the best meals are leisurely ones with friends. The food doesn’t have to be complicated but something simple and prepared with love is the best (especially if there’s a cheese course).

When I want to relax... I find a quiet spot and meditate. Being in St John’s alone when everyone has gone and the lights are out is very prayerful.

What is your favourite shop? I’m Rev Raymond Baudon and I’m the curate (which is kind of like a trainee vicar) at St John’s East Dulwich on Goose Green. I have only just moved to the area from north London but I’ve been working at St John’s since 1st July.

I have a few. Dulwich DIY has been a godsend while I’ve been moving in to my flat. I love Mons Cheesemonger and the Cheese Block. Chener Books and Rye Books are also favourites.

What do you most value about the area?

I’d still do what I’m doing now. I wouldn’t give up this job even if I won the lottery! St John’s is an Inclusive Church and it is such a privilege to be able to meet and welcome everyone no matter who they are.

The sense of community. So many times I’ve bumped into someone I know in the street and I love that.

What one thing would you change? A tube station at the end of my street.

The one thing you couldn’t do without? I have a bit of an addiction to kitchen gadgets and I love my Kitchenaid mixer. I use it to make cakes for our Wednesday coffee morning.

The most famous person you’ve met?

If money was no object…

The book I’m reading at the moment… ’Fear’ by Bob Woodward.

My perfect holiday… I’ve always wanted to go to India and, in fact, I’m going on a trip to India in February and I’m very excited about.

I did meet someone who looked familiar recently and when I found out he was an actor I asked if he’d been in anything recently. He replied that he’d been in “a little thing called Downton”. That’s when I recognized him! It was all very awkward.

Describe your perfect weekend My day off is on a Friday so my perfect “weekend” would start on a Thursday night with a film at the Picturehouse. Friday would start with a lie-in followed by pottering around my flat. Then going out to the theatre or somewhere nice for dinner in the evening. I love Forza Win on Copeland Park where they’ve dubbed me the “Pasta Pastor”! Then it’s back to work on Saturday preparing for Sunday. 48 | SE22 - December 2018
