Welcome to SE22 Despite it being late January as I type this, I am still receiving “Happy New Year” messages. Is it just me or are we all feeling like this year has started slowly! As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. February is one of our quietier months for events but we still have six pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk too. I am delighted to bring back the Children’s Activities page which was a retired during the lockdowns. My plan is to increase this back to a double page in the coming months. If you run a local group and would like to be featured, please do get in touch. Find out more on page 32. Pets Corner is back this month with Does Your Pet Love You? Leonie St Clair looks at the human animal bond. See page 30. Maggie Browning writes our Councillors Column this month. One of the items she covers is the shocking mail service we are experiencing here in East Dulwich. Find out more on page 24. I hope you enjoy the magazine this month, please feel free to let me know if you do. Until next time.

Make a change in 2022 and volunteer with Link Age Southwark

This local charity has been working in the borough for over 25 years, providing a range of volunteer-led services to older people and people living with dementia. These services include befriending, exercise and activity groups, provision of transport, and IT help. Link Age Southwark are always looking for befrienders to provide company and conversation for an older person. As a volunteer, you will make weekly contact at an arranged time and day that is convenient for you. A one-hour visit per week can make a huge difference to the life of an isolated older person, helping them feel less lonely. Another valuable way you can support older people is by becoming an IT Buddy. You will be paired with someone who needs support with digital skills, helping them to stay engaged in their community. This role can be fitted around your other commitments and takes one hour per week. If you can spare just one hour once a week to help an older person stay socially active, please get in touch by visiting the Link Age Southwark website at https://www.linkagesouthwark. org/why-volunteer. You can also email volunteering@linkagesouthwark.org or call 020 8299 2623.

Heavenly Helebores Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw

T

he pure white helebores I have in my front garden, shooting up in January from the bare soil are such a joy, making me feel spring is on the way. Helebores come in a gorgeous range of subtle hues from whites and pale apple greens to dusky pinks and deep inky purples, lighting up your garden from now to spring. There are also a few peachy coloured helebores and fancier varieties with double petals or stunning markings. The best way of choosing a flower you love is to buy it now while it’s in bloom. For most impact, group at least three together in the front garden, by a path, or where you can see them from a window on a cold day. Apart from the more sun tolerant varieties, helebores like dappled shade, so planting them in drifts under a deciduous tree or large shrub for summer shade is ideal. They look great intermingled with snowdrops and cyclamen or other shade lovers such as ferns or Liriope muscari, as well as underplanting late winter flowering shrubs such as sarcococca and Vibernum tinus. Prune off last year’s old foliage in Janurary to show off the new buds and flowers as they grow and deadhead if you want to avoid them self-seeding.

H. argutifolius This larger more sculptural helebore is a fabulous foliage plant with handsome serrated evergreen leaves that’ll give your garden evergreen interest and structure all year roud. The pale green clusters of flowers in pendants are in bloom from Janurary to March. Looks great with pink-red flowers of Pulmonaria rubra. Likes full sun or or partial shade. (50cm H)

Helleborus x hybridus (H. orientalis)

H. ‘Penny’s Pink’

Flowering from Feb to April, this is a popular hellebore with large dark green leaves and a wonderful range of flowers from from the deep pinky/red ‘Havington Red’ to the striking soft yellow ‘Yellow Lady’ with maroon speckling. The dark plum varieties such as ‘Single Dusky Grape’ (Ashwood Garden Hybrids) look great offset with snowdrops or bright blue Pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’. They like partial shade. 45cm H

This is a real show-stopper (part of the Rodney Davey marbled group) has large flowers from late winter to mid-spring above the silver-marbled foliage. Anna’s Red’ is named after Anna Pavord is also bred by Rodney Davey, with masses of reddy purple flowers on dark stalks with marbled foliage. Happiest in partial shade, and flowering from February to April,. (50cm H).

Helleborus niger

H. x sternii

Also known as the Christmas rose, this is a dainty white hellebore with yellow stamens and low growing leathery evergreen foliage. It’s great for containers and one of the earliest to flower (Jan to Feb). Likes partial shade. (30cm H)

More sun tolerant than most, this is a striking hellebore as much for its marbled silvery foliage as the pretty clusters of pink tinged green flowers (Feb – March). ‘Silver Dollar’ is a stunning variety with steely silver serrated leaves – best in containers in a sunny sheltered position. 40cm. Helleborus lividus is similar but less hardy with wonderful marbled bluish green leaves and clusters of pink-tinged apple green flowers (Jan – March). Ideal in a large container in a sheltered semi shady pot with well-drained soil (35cm H).

H. foetidus Another large architectural variety with masses of bell shaped pale green flowers with purple edges (Jan – April) above clumps of palm like dark green leaves. It likes partial shade. Tall at up to 80cm. 12 | SE22 - February 2022

Mussels with Cider & Bacon

Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk Ingredients Serves 4 • Small knob of butter • 6 rashers of chopped rindless streaky bacon • 2 shallots, finely sliced • 2 cloves of garlic, peeled and crushed • Small bunch thyme, leaves stripped • 1.5kg small mussels, scrubbed and bearded • 400ml of dry cider • 4 tbsp crème fraiche or 100ml double cream • Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Method: 1) Raw mussels MUST be alive when you cook them, so careful preparation is key. Wash them under cold running water until it runs clear, and scrub if necessary. Pull the ‘beard’ away from each mussel and discard. Drain and then check; if the shell is tightly shut, this is a good indication that it’s alive. If the mussel is open, tap it sharply for a few seconds - if it is alive, it will close. Discard any that appear to be dead. Don’t check them too far in advance; cook within a few minutes to be on the safe side. 2) Heat the butter in a large pot big enough to fit the mussels (you may need two, depending how many you’re feeding) and fry the bacon for 4 minutes, turning occasionally until it starts to become crisp. 3) Add the shallots, garlic and thyme leaves, and then cook for 1-2 minutes until softened. Add the cider, turn up the heat and simmer for a minute or so. 4) Add the mussels and crème fraiche/cream, season and cook with a lid on for approximately 5 minutes, giving the pan a good shake now and again until all the mussels have opened. 5) Serve immediately in bowls with the liquor and hunks of crusty bread for mopping up the sauce. Remember to provide spare bowls for the shells. Enjoy! Sign up to our newsletter for more seasonal tips and news. 14 | SE22 - February 2022

What Does it Feel Like to Be Fit?

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com

F

irstly, a definition of fitness in this context: I’m referring to fitness in a physical sense, so literally your strength and cardiovascular performance. However, to achieve a good level of physical fitness, you must also pay attention to your sleep, mental health, energy, body composition and digestion.

More Energy Being physically fit means more energy to get things done, in both your personal and professional life. Rather than drain your energy, a workout can set you up for a more energetic and productive day, as well as giving you all the benefits of increased blood flow, potential EPOC (excess post-exercise oxygen consumption – i.e., increased calorie burn post-workout), increased heart rate and the flow of ‘feel good’ neurotransmitters such as endorphins, serotonin and dopamine.

More Resilience Our lifestyles demand that we’re fit for the rigours of modern life. The demands made on us in terms of our availability, combined with the pressures to be ‘always on’ mean that it can be easy to become stressed and burned out. Whilst being fit doesn’t mean this won’t happen (or that the demands on your lifestyle should be met), it does mean that you are much better equipped for the tough times and have the resilience to ride the storms.

More Stamina Being fit provides you with the stamina needed for much of life, whether that’s a long day at work, travelling or a day out with friends or family. Being fit means you don’t need to worry about the physical demands of an exercise or activity because you can be confident you have the fitness to endure it. Knowing that I can go into almost any situation, knowing that I have the physical stamina to withstand it is very empowering. This creeps into mental stamina too.

Your World Opens You can say yes to things rather than no because you don’t think you’d be fit enough. This might 16 | SE22 - February 2022

range from an invitation to run Parkrun on a Saturday morning to a game of rounders on the beach. You don’t want to be the one who sits it out because of a perceived or real lack of fitness. Once you become fit, your world opens up and you are more willing to try new things.

Operate In Your Discomfort Zone The ability to become comfortable in your discomfort zone is huge. We believe it’s important to regularly challenge yourself in some way to get comfortable with this. Sport and exercise is a great way to do this, hence we regularly take part in challenging endurance events to keep ourselves sharp. For you this might also be trying a new hobby or public speaking.

A Longer Healthspan Being fit means you’re giving yourself a good chance of having a long healthspan. Maintaining your fitness will promote a healthy cardiovascular system; strong bones, tendons and ligaments; a healthy brain with lots of blood flow; balanced blood sugars and hormonal profile; a healthy digestive system and good mental health.

What's On - February Thursdays 3, 10, 17 & 24 February: Dulwich Folk Dance Club-Thursday Dance 8pm - 10pm. So….You’ve survived January (dry or not!). You’ve been “boosted”. Are you ready for some fun?..... Dancing! That’s the answer. Meeting friends old and new, keeping fit and the brain active- and enjoying it. Wonderful. You are invited to come country (aka folk) dancing at St Barnabas Parish Hall, Dulwich Village from 8pm to 10 pm on Thursdays. The hall is lovely, spacious and airy so you won’t feel hemmed in. No need to feel nervous or apprehensive. Even if you’re an inexperienced dancer, you won’t want to hover on the side. You can join in immediately and get the full benefit and joy of the event as all dances are first practised and then “called”. And there are many people to partner you and show you how it’s done, should you need it. Thursday 3 February: Gwen Godwin is calling tonight. And she is multi-talented, being proficient in calling line dances and international as well as English folk dances. Remember your holidays? Perhaps she’ll call a dance like the ones you enjoyed when abroad(?) Thursday 10 February: This evening, we give the nod to St Valentine’s Day. (Can you start too early? No.) So, feel free to wear your romantic outfit. And let’s see what our tremendous caller, Philip Barber, comes up with. (His Christmas themed dances were remarkable!) Whatever happens, it’s going to be good! Thursday 17 February: This evening, George Reynolds is calling and we’re bound to have lots to smile about. So, dust off the dancing shoes and join us. You’ve been “boosted”, haven’t you? So, what’s holding you back? Thursday 24 February: This evening, our caller is Les Wallace who has a wealth of experience. So, dust off the dancing shoes and join us. It’ll put a smile on your face. You’ve been “boosted”, haven’t you? So, what’s holding you back? Covid-19: The Club abides by Government Guidelines. Please do not attend if you believe you may have covid-19 or if you have recently had a positive lateral flow test. ULEZ: Please note, the Club’s Hall lies within the south circular. Entrance on door £5 (£4 Club members) ENQUIRIES: John Blase: johnhblase@aol.com. 020 8693 2873 Wendy Newall: 07821 089861 wendy.marsh@hotmail.com. Right up Your Street Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk Aidan Sproat-Clements, maths teacher, author of maths text books, and Director of Studies at Alleyn’s School, talks about the maths you might be able to find on the school run.

Maths in the real world Relating maths to the real world is a great way of helping children to find it enjoyable. Simple games when you are out and about can be effective ways to pass the time and practise shape knowledge. Questions such as “Can you find a window that’s shaped like a triangle?” will engage your child both with their surroundings and with key mathematical definitions. Particularly with the rich and interesting Victorian architecture that can be found around here, there are plenty of opportunities to look for squares, rectangles, trapezia and rhombuses in the intricate mouldings around windows and front doors.

Windows of opportunity Windows, especially those divided into small panes, offer lots of opportunities for counting practice, and for multiplication practice, too – how many panes would make up a window that is seven panes tall and four panes wide? You can also ask these questions in reverse to help check that children know their times tables thoroughly – “if I can see a window with 28 panes, what dimensions could it be?”.

Open minds lead to open doors Door numbers can also be a great way to practise mathematical skills – especially because of the different ways in which roads can be numbered. Odds on one side and evens on the other? Try to predict the number that will be four houses away. Or simply add up the numbers as you go along. It is a satisfying fact that adding up odd numbers starting at 1 always yields a square number: 1 + 3 = 4 = 22, 1 + 3 + 5 = 9 = 32, 1 + 3 + 5 + 7 = 16 = 42 and so on. These are the sorts of patterns that older children might be able to spot. How far down the street can they get before the speed at which they are passing houses is faster than the speed at which they can add numbers together? 20 | SE22 - February 2022

Mixing and matching There are plenty of other ways to mix up the problems depending on the journey you take – adding up only houses with red front doors, for example, or if you happen to travel past semidetached houses on your route, finding the total for each pair. Multiplication can increase in difficulty very quickly – perhaps for each building, your budding mathematicians could multiply the number of floors by the house number.

Keeping their brains ticking over As with so many learning activities, the actual sums you are doing aren’t especially important. What matters is that brains are being kept alert and that numerical and observational skills continue to be honed. For more ideas about some of the patterns that can be found in house numbers, check out www.nrich.maths.org/housenumbers

HMRC & Taxpayers’ Pantomime Listening to some taxpayers conjures up a sense of a taxpayer’s pantomime being played out in everyday life. Audience participation and some key phrases are at the heart of all pantomimes. Three key phrases common to all pantomime performances are: “Look behind you!”; “Oh, yes it is!” and “Oh, no it isn’t!” These phrases are reminiscent of some taxpayers’ engagement or lack of engagement with their tax affairs and HMRC. Moreover, there is an over indulgent phrase not yet weaved into our pantomimes and that is, “how will they (HMRC) find out?” A simple answer may be, very easily. However, this may not suffice in the world of the taxpayer’s pantomime. The following extract from one taxpayers pantomime may help. Several years ago a taxpayer was outraged because they thought their local authority had reported them to HMRC. The fact was, the employed taxpayer with two residential rental properties had not subscribed to the payment of income tax for their rental income. It just so happened that the local authority also had a landlord’s registration scheme for private landlords. Not surprisingly, the taxpayer had not joined the scheme. However, the taxpayer’s world changed on the day they received one of HMRC’s fishing letters enquiring about their two residential properties. The taxpayer had ignored the “look behind you” pantomime phrase. This was compounded with the fact that the taxpayer had chosen to believe, “oh, no it isn’t” HMRC observing them from afar. HMRC’s letter came as a nasty surprise. Although it should have been expected! The letter was not as painful as the subsequent thousands of pounds income tax, penalties and interest that the taxpayer had to pay HMRC. The phrase, “Oh, yes they did!” comes to mind. The unsuspecting taxpayer was oblivious to the fact that their letting activity was being reported annually to HMRC by their friendly letting agent. A 22 | SE22 - February 2022

classic example of neglecting, “look behind you!” Although such behaviour is not uncommon it still exists. Taxpayers can simply avoid this pantomime by engaging with HMRC and just being aware of the prevailing environment. HMRC has multiple sources of capturing data on taxpayers and our income activities. Hence taxpayers should familiarise themselves with the language of pantomime if they wish to attempt and beat HMRC. It may be much easier and more comforting for taxpayers to engage in tax compliance rather than pursue the path of tax evasion. Nevertheless, there is always the minority who like a challenge. In truth, for every successful taxpayer, willing to share their story of how they beat HMRC, there are 99 others whose story does not have a happy ending. Furthermore, the sole victorious taxpayer, often gets ensnared in the long run. It is no big secret that HMRC has access to multiple data sources such as: • Social media platforms. One of the biggest sources in recent years; • HM Land Registry with its ever ready register of the legal owners of property; • Open data exchange between tax authorities via The Common Reporting Standards; • Banks and financial institutions filing of Suspicious Activity Reports (SARs); • DVLA provides a ready access to identify vehicle owners and access to much more about the owner; and • Mortgage applications submitted to mortgage providers by taxpayers. The list is forever growing and taxpayers should not remain blinkered by the false reality of believing HMRC will not find out. “Look behind you”. Simon York, Director, Fraud Investigation Service, HMRC, said: “HMRC deploys cutting-edge technology to investigate unexplained wealth and uncover hidden assets.” The continual expansion of the digital world plus the Making Tax Digital future of HMRC, may serve to reduce the scale of tax evasion tomorrow. Only time will tell whether this will bring down the curtain on the taxpayers’ pantomime.

SE22 Councillors

Dulwich Hill Councillor Maggie Browning | maggie.browning@southwark.gov.uk

Royal Mail Christmas Chaos As local councillors, we have been inundated with stories about the poor postal service throughout the Christmas period. When I was out knocking on doors in Dulwich in January, residents spoke of no post for up to 4 weeks; of missing Christmas cards and gifts, letters for hospital appointments arriving late and of waiting for important bills and documents. As many residents will know, Royal Mail chose to close their delivery office on Silvester Road in 2018. This has left SE22 and the wider Dulwich area without a delivery office able to meet the needs of the community. We, along with Helen Hayes MP, opposed the closure at the time but our concerns fell on deaf ears. Since then the service has gone from bad to worse. We have consistently raised the issue of the poor postal service in Dulwich with Royal Mail but again no action has been taken. We know our postal workers are working extremely hard in very challenging circumstances, challenges that have been further exacerbated by the pandemic. Your local councillors in Dulwich and your local MP Helen Hayes have relaunched our campaign on the postal service in Dulwich. We are starting out with a survey so we can get a clear picture of the scale of the problem. If you haven’t already, please fill out our survey and encourage your friends and neighbours to do the same: https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/royal_mail_2022

Royal British Legion East Dulwich Branch centenary celebration In December, it was a pleasure to take part in the ceremony for the centenary celebration of the Royal British Legion East Dulwich Branch on Barry Road. My ward colleague Cllr Jon Hartley and I were joined by the Mayor of Southwark Cllr Barrie Hargrove and by Helen Hayes MP. There was an amazing turnout of local residents and the ceremony was very moving. The RBL building has recently undergone a major refurbishment, organized by volunteers and with support from the central Royal British Legion, and it looks fantastic inside. I will be working with the branch and volunteers to see how we can further commemorate this important anniversary. 24 | SE22 - February 2022

Supporting Local Businesses in Dulwich Hill It was a pleasure to welcome Cllr Jason Ochere, Cabinet Member for Jobs, Businesses and Town Centres, to Dulwich Hill in December to meet with businesses on Forest Hill Road and to discuss what more we can do to help businesses thrive. Several businesses we spoke to had been supported by the council to apply for support grants during the pandemic and were keen to share further ideas for how we can continue to support small businesses in Southwark.

Back to Business Fund open to applications The Back to Business Fund, a collaboration between Southwark Council and the Greater London Authority, is now open to applications. Delivered through the Pay It Forward London crowdfunding platform, the fund offers up to £5,000 in match funding to small and independent businesses based in Southwark to help them build future resilience. Businesses can use the fund to upskill employees, digitise, diversify their business model, or innovate and adapt to new ways of trading through the recovery period. If you’re a small business that has been adversely affected by COVID-19, this fund can help your business become better equipped for the future. https://payitforward.london.gov.uk/fund?utm_ content=&utm_medium=email&utm_name=&utm_ source=govdelivery&utm_term=

In the first concert, superstar cellist Sheku Kanneh–Mason performs Shostakovich’s second cello concerto. Interweaving brooding melodies with animated themes, and featuring a virtuosic cadenza, it’s a dramatic work that makes demands on soloist, conductor and orchestra. Don’t miss this opportunity to find out more about, and then hear, a rarely performed work, played by one of the UK’s finest musicians. What's On - February Thursday 24 February: An Evening with Radio 4’s Justin Webb

7:30pm - 8:30pm. Join Village Books and Alleyn’s School Enterprises for an evening with Radio 4’s Justin Webb where he will be discussing his memoir The Gift of a Radio: My Childhood and Other Train Wrecks. Justin’s childhood was far from ordinary: Between his mother’s undiagnosed psychological problems, and his stepfather’s untreated ones, his life at home was dysfunctional. Life at a Quaker boarding school wasn’t much better with gunwielding school masters and sub-standard living conditions. And the backdrop to this comingof-age story? Britain in the 1970s. Led Zeppelin, Janis Joplin and Free. Strikes, inflation and IRA bombings. A time in which attitudes towards mental illness, parenting and masculinity were worlds apart from the attitudes we have today. Candid, unsparing and darkly funny, Justin's memoir is a portrait of personal and national dysfunction. Was it the brutal experiences of his upbringing, or an innate ambition and drive that shaped the urbane and successful radio presenter we know and love now? ‘Justin is a great broadcaster because he sounds like a real human being. This hugely entertaining book helps explain why’. John Humphrys Justin Webb is the longest serving presenter of BBC Radio 4 Today programme. For almost 40 years he has been a voice on the airwaves or a presence on our TV screens. He has reported from around the world and has won several awards including Political Journalist of the Year for his coverage of the Obama presidential campaign. https://www.village-books.co.uk. Friday 25 February: Fay Hield, Laura Victoria, Jacken Elswyth 7pm-11pm

Fay Hield first appeared on the Folk scene

twenty years ago in The Witches of Elswick. She is a singer who seems to have been born knowing how to carry a tune, but with the rarer gift of knowing how to go straight to the heart of a song. She combines vision, inspiration and outstanding musicianship into a fresh and original exploration of how we use songs, stories and music to understand what it means to be human. Fay breathes new life into timeless stories. Laura Victoria sings songs of love affairs, shipwrecks, imaginary worlds and cups of tea, accompanied by cello playing that veers between moving melancholy airs, punchy rock riffing and slap bass. Jacken Elswyth is a London-based banjo player. She draws on old-time Appalachian playing alongside American Primitive guitarists and English folk revivalists, adding drone accompaniments, extended playing techniques and elements of free playing to push at the edges of these styles and traditions. Tickets are £14 advance, £16 on the door (cash only please). Advance tickets from: www.wegottickets.com/thegooseisout. Please see our website for up-to-date information on the Covid precautions we will be taking at this concert. The Ivy House, 40 Stuart Road, Nunhead SE15 3BE. SE22 - February 2022 | 27

ovid’s clammy clasp curtailed Christmas at Campo Camberwell Borders somewhat, with Dulwich’s diurnal Dorking date deferred and the wintery Wenceslaus Day wingding with Welling wiped-out. Nonetheless the administration of copious Night Nurse, chicken soup, and a helping hand from a Fisherman’s Friend or two got our boys back on track for the new year. And while it is true that January’s results have been a little bit average with Hamlet’s foxy form of football getting bogged down in the gelatinous gumbo of weather affected non-league pitches - the Pink and Blues remain within a strong whiff of the play-offs, dreaming of Conference glory. As the days lengthen and the pitches become firmer of form, who’d bet against The Sons of Edgar Kail ascending Mount Promotionpush like some sort of frisky Norgay. Failing that, a decent run in the London Senior Cup would certainly be a tonic. Elsewhere yet more excitement in the extended Champion Hill universe, with Dulwich Hamlet the co-star of a new TV docuseries. “Save Our Beautiful Game” tells the story of the club’s new found best buddy and one time player Peter Crouch and his sterling efforts to revive the fortunes of South London’s number one club as it emerges from the privations of the pandemic. If you’ve been to see a game recently you might well have seen the dapper beanpole at The Stadio della Dog Kennel Hill Sainsbury’s doing his footer millionaire thing while blocking your view. The series also features manager Gavin Rose, heroic chairman Ben Clasper and an assortment of players, volunteers and fans as they work like mad things to keep our beloved club afloat. Well worth a watch once you’ve finished season two of The Witcher. Meanwhile Dulwich Hamlet continue to show why they’re much more than a football club, with a recent home game seeing the players donning a one off kit in support of Shelter’s campaign to highlight the plight of people with no safe place to call home. The club has since auctioned off the shirts, with all proceeds going to Shelter. Good show, with a special shout out to the club’s community team. Oh lummy is there an awful lot going down

at The Hamlet or what. If you’ve not been to watch a game yet why not plan to do so in 2022. Home games tend to sell out quickly, so best to buy your tickets beforehand online if you can. Or you could try out one of the women’s team’s games on a Sunday where crowds are nudging 500, but entry on the door is as cheap as it is guaranteed (£4 adults, £2 concessions, U13s free). As ever, keep an eye on the Hamlet website at www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet/ to keep up with all the latest news and to get details of all upcoming men’s and women’s team games. Does Your Pet Love You?

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

O

ne interesting side effect of the COVID 19 pandemic has been the opportunity to take a closer look at the human animal bond. As the recent explosion in dog and cat ownership has shown, humans draw heavily on their pets for emotional and physical support. Many humans express love and devotion for their pets. However, what about the animals? Do they feel the same about us? In general the science advises that to conflate feelings and emotions is unwise. There are animal behaviours that connote emotions, but we cannot infer we therefore know what animals feel. All that said and setting to one side complex scientific and philosophical questions about the meaning and nature of love, there are indicators that dogs and even cats may feel something akin to affection for their humans. Here is a quick guide to some of the evidence: In 2014 a small study showed that during MRI scans the reward centres of the dog brain light up when they detect their owner’s scent. It seems the owner’s unique smell may be the canine equivalent of a loved one’s face or voice. Next time your pup steals a shoe or inhales deeply into your crotch they are not necessarily being naughty, they just love you and your smell! In 2015 a Japanese study found that when you and your dog gaze into each other’s eyes you may both experience a spike in oxytocin- the ‘love hormone’. It’s strong stuff and what mothers feel for their new-borns, and newly enamoured couples for each other. A 2016 study suggests dogs are uniquely attuned to human facial expressions and vocal tones and may ‘recognise’ human emotions. In tests dogs were able to match facial expressions to the appropriate tone of voice. This ability partly explains why some owners feel their dogs are empathetic. More recently, ethologist Clive Wynne, an arch critic of anthropomorphism, now says dogs may indeed feel something akin to love. In his Book ‘Dog is Love: Why and How your Dog Loves You’ he refers to research where dogs will often choose the presence of their human over food. Wynne also discusses recent research that may explain much more about how dogs evolved

30 | SE22 - February 2022

and became domesticated. Humans with the rare genetic condition, Williams-Beuren syndrome, share a number of physical and mental characteristics, including unusually high extraversion and sociability scores. Research on the canine genome has revealed that dogs share similar gene variants, partly explaining why most dogs are so dependent on human contact and affection. Unsurprisingly, it has proven much more difficult to get pet cats into scanners or laboratory test scenarios, so the evidence here is thinner. Also, Felines are not so well domesticated that they depend on us utterly. But can cats love us or only what we can do for them? The jury is out, but it is thought that some cats are more social than others and many show signs of something akin to affection. A cat that flags his tail and moves brightly towards you is probably pleased to see you. If he rubs around you and butts you with his head, he is scenting you, making you smell familiar- the more you smell like him the stronger the bond. Slow eye closing is usually a sign of trust, if not more. Try it out and see if your cat responds. Cats also show trust and affiliation, if not affection, by leaning against you, grooming you with their tongue, even offering their tummy for a rub. Purring, once viewed as a signal of feline pleasure, is now thought to be more about communicating a desire for something or to prolong an event. Paradoxically, cats also purr when they are in pain.
