Welcome to SE22 This Month

Welcome I absolutely love this time of year. Christmas (which I love!) is over and we have a wonderful New Year to look forward too. With that in mind, Lawrence Roullier White has produced a rather different shopping page this month. It’s all about donating not dumping; why not take a look on page 28. December was a fantastic month with so much on locally including the wonderful Christmas Cracker, which had East Dulwich really buzzing. We have news of the Dulwich Charity lunch which took place at The Palmerston in early December, raising money for our local charity Link Age Southwark. Find out how much we raised on page 20. The Last Word this month goes to our very own Sarah Pylas. Sarah works with me on the Around Dulwich blog as well as a couple of her own. Sarah recently published a cook book, find out more on page 40.

Dulwich Charity Lunch 2015
Remember that the events that miss our print deadline will be found at www.arounddulwich.co.uk as will many other stories. Happy New Year!
Angela Angela Burgess: Editor SE Magazines Limited
The Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £2,200 for Link Age Southwark (formerly Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care). The lunch, now in its 14th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 55 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party. The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came
along and enjoyed the day. Hello from the other side... By Sarah Pylas
M
y husband bought me the new Adele album just before Christmas and I am obsessed with it! 15 years ago, I would have absolutely murdered Hello at karaoke, but now I just sing along in the car to my 6-year old at the top of my voice. Obviously, in my head, I sound just like Adele. Sadly, the biggest compliment I have ever received for my singing voice is that what I lack in talent, I make up for in enthusiasm. I think it is fair to assume that I won’t be auditioning for The X-Factor this year. Or, EVER. However, this realisation did not stop me from belting out Jolene and other party classics around the piano (ok, organ) at a friend’s annual Christmas do in East Dulwich. Hosted every year by local caterer, Tracey at Dolce Vita, it is the highlight of my festive social calendar. Although, it is The Dulwich Charity Lunch at The Palmerston that really signifies the start of the silly season for me. Over £2,000 was raised for Link Age Southwark and a great time was had by all. On my husband’s birthday, which conveniently (!) also takes place in December, we visited local eatery, Si Mangia, on Forest Hill Road. I enjoyed fresh gluten free spaghetti with arrabbiata sauce and washed it down with a glass, or two, of house red. Later that week, we met friends for Sunday lunch at The Dulwich Wood House, just next to Sydenham Woods. The pub has undergone a complete transformation and the garden has been totally overhauled to include heated garden huts. While the kids queued to visit Santa in his grotto, a live band played Christmas tunes in the background. I even resisted the urge to sing along! It was a magical day and the food was amazing. We will definitely be going back. All this over indulgence is probably what led me to
email my Slimming World consultant at the end of last year in a state of sheer panic! I rattled off all the mince pies I had stuffed into my face and all the wine I was filling my cheering glass with, and she calmly reassured me that all was not lost and I would be able to get back on plan. With every New Year comes fresh opportunity. For some, it is a chance to evaluate where they are in their personal lives and think about where they would like to be. For others, it is about health and fitness but for most, the passing of a year is a chance for reflection. Not to dwell, but to remember the good times and the bad. You can read our review of 2015 on arounddulwich.co.uk. Now January has arrived and it is cold and grey outside, it is understandable to want to hibernate until Spring breaks. However, there is much to look forward to this month. On 9-10 January, the Dulwich Opera Company is bringing Mozart’s classic tale ‘The Marriage of Figaro’ to King’s. We are also really looking forward to the ‘I Call Myself a Feminist’ event, celebrating the writing of 25 feminists under 30, organized by Dulwich Books at The Bedford in Balham on 14th, Visit our website for details of all local news, events and ticket information. Hectic Host
New Year Recovery
F
or many people the seasonal break does not happen, if it happens at all, until the New Year. Whilst many of us are winding down a huge proportion of us just get busier and busier on the run up to Christmas and then go straight into full-on entertaining mode. When the last guest leaves on New Year’s Day, and we flop down in front of a film, this is when we can really relax. However, having had a house full for over week it might be hard to concentrate on the various plot twists of ‘Sherlock: The Abominable Bride’ (BBC1 9pm New Year’s Day) whilst contemplating the recovery that is required in the rooms around us. Here are a few home-hacks that you might not have thought of to help make every Hectic Host’s life a little easier. I am not ashamed to admit it (although it might sound extravagant actually it is worth every penny) after I have washed all the spare bedding I drop it off to have it ironed. When I get the pressed sheets back I fold into one of the pillowcases the corresponding sheet, duvet cover and remaining pillowcases of the set so everything is kept together and can be stored ready for the next guest bed making. This saves hours of unfolding and refolding, looking for that missing item of bedding. Storing bulky things that are seldom used is such a waste of space. If you use a fold out sofa bed when you fold it back up do so with the duvet concertinaed inside. When you next flip it open all you have to do is bang a bit of life back into the rather sad, flattened feather article. I have also discovered that pillows can be squeezed into decent sized cushion covers, meaning you can make daily use of them on your sofa without hogging valuable cupboard space in between visits. If you received a batch of smellies for Christmas, resist temptation and pack them away for later use. Whilst guests in your home are not expecting a five-star hotel experience no one
12 | SE22 - January 2016
wants to be faced with a cracked bar of soap and the dried up dregs of a shampoo bottle. Pop a few essentials in a drawer or hamper so you can refresh your toiletries without any future frantic running around. Put a couple of spare loo rolls in the welcome pack too, believe me come that tipsy afternoon BBQ in the summer or that rainy night next December when you are making up the guest room or bathroom you will be glad you did. As you switch of the TV, put your glass down on the coffee table in front of you and muster all your energy to get you off the sofa and off to bed, don’t put a cork in the remaining red wine (it is the beginning of January after-all so you will probably never finish it) pour into into an ice cube mould and put it in the freezer. Next time you are cooking and your recipe requires a few tablespoons of wine, voila.

Food & Drink Leek & Garlic Soup
Happy New Year!
I
f I could urge you all to stick to one resolution in 2016 it would be to shop seasonally, getting the best produce at the best prices, and in turn supporting British food producers. Despite much greater awareness of environmental issues in recent years less than 50% of the fruit and vegetables we buy are home grown. Unless you're after pineapples and mangos by shopping seasonally you should, generally find yourself buying British produce. As with previous years I hope that I can help to ward off any January doom and gloom by encouraging you to embrace these cold dark nights, and enjoying some good ‘soul warming’ food! This is certainly the theme for our January East Dulwich Supper Club, which we have named the “January Blues Basher” for good reason. Our starter of Leek & Garlic Soup with Prosciutto and Brick House Bakery Sour Dough Breads is included below. Trust me when I say this is a really spectacular soup. Roast garlic is absolutely amazing; so sweet and smooth. Roasting gives it a rounded flavour, wonderfully tasty and in no way pungent so don’t be afraid to go with two whole bulbs.
Food in Season Vegetables - Jerusalem Artichokes, Beetroot, Broccoli, Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Carrots, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Celery, Chicory, Garlic, Kale, Leeks, Mushrooms, Onions, Parsnips, Potatoes, Pumpkin, Red Cabbage, Shallots, Spinach, Swede, Turnips. Fruit & Nuts - Apples, Pears (late – Concorde, Doyenne du Comice, Conference and Winter Nellis), Rhubarb (forced), Walnuts Meat - Duck (end of season), Guinea Fowl, Hare, Partridge, Venison Fish & Seafood - Brill, Clams, Cockles, Haddock, Halibut, Hake, John Dory, Lemon Sole, Salmon (coming into season), Monkfish, Mussels, Oyster, Plaice, Turbot 14 | SE22 - January 2016
Serves 4. Less than 30 minutes preparation time 30 minutes to 1 hour cooking time Ingredients • 2 leeks • 2 whole garlic bulbs • 1L chicken stock (do make your own if at all possible – substitute for vegetable stock if necessary) • 650g potatoes – Vivaldis are my favourites (around 4 medium sized) • 1 tablespoon butter • Olive Oil • Salt • Cream or Crème Fraiche Method: 1) Pre-heat the oven to 2000C. Remove the ‘tops’ of the bulbs of garlic with a horizontal slice so that the cloves inside are exposed. Drizle with olive oil, wrap in aluminium foil and place in the oven for 30 minutes. Remove. Allow to cool and, with a firm hold of the base of the bulb, squeeze the soft, caramelised garlic into a small bowl. If you want to use prosciutto as a garnish, place the slices on a tray and bake for 10 minutes. 2) Remove the tops, or the darkest green leaves from the leeks. Slice the stalks in half and wash well (because leeks have many layers there may be plenty of dirt and soil in there). Finely chop into small pieces. 3) Peel potatoes and roughly chop into 2cm cubes. 4) Heat butter and a drizzle of olive oil in a large pot. Add chopped leeks and stir until softened, around 10 minutes. Add the litre of stock, the cubed potatoes, the soft garlic and a teaspoon of salt. Combine, bring to the boil then reduce heat to medium. Cover and allow to simmer for 30 minutes or until the vegetables have softened significantly. 5) In batches, pour the soup into a blender and process until smooth. Alternatively use a stick blender straight in the pot. Return to the pot on a low heat and add cream. 6) Spoon ladleful’s of soup into a bowl. Add a dollop of cream or crème fraiche, a piece of prosciutto and garnish with cracked black pepper. Email Suzanne with comments or questions: info@suzannejames.co.uk www.suzannejames.co.uk

Five Compelling Reasons Why You Should Be Juicing Every Day
E
ver since I did a DNA test to understand what my dietary requirements are for crucial vitamins and other healthrelated factors, I’ve been starting the day with a vegetable and fruit smoothie. The test results told me what my requirements are for cruciferous vegetables, omega 3, vitamin B6 and anti-oxidants, and I now ensure I get a good proportion of my daily needs in a morning smoothie. It’s quick and easy to do, and a great way to start the day. Here are five reasons why I think you should be doing the same.
Increase Your Cruciferous Vegetables Examples of cruciferous vegetables include Brussel sprouts, broccoli, cabbage and kale, and (with the possible exception of the Brussel sprout), these can all be added to a smoothie. Cruciferous vegetables contain very high amounts of vitamin A carotenoid, vitamin C, folic acid, and fibre, and are also a good source of vitamin K. I use kale as a base for my smoothies, occasionally mixing it up with spinach for an extra boost.
Increase Your Omega 3 Omega 3 is a fatty acid that is essential to good health. Its benefits can boost positive mental health, and reduce the risk of cancer, cognitive aging, cardiovascular problems and inflammation. One of the best sources of omega 3 is oily fish (salmon, mackerel, sardines and to a lesser degree, tuna), but it can also be found in flaxseeds and chia seeds. You can add these seeds to a morning smoothie and they add texture as well as nutritional value.
Boost Your Vitamin B6 The richest sources of vitamin B6 are pork, turkey, beef, chickpeas, potatoes and bananas. Now obviously there’s only one of those foods that you’d want to add to a smoothie – the banana. The banana lends a slightly sweeter taste to the smoothie, and 16 | SE22 - January 2016
apart from B6, is also a great source of magnesium, potassium and fibre.
Ramp Up Your Antioxidants Blackberries, blueberries, strawberries, raspberries and cranberries are all excellent sources of antioxidants, and can all be added to a smoothie. I still buy them even when they are out of season for the goodness and taste that they bring. Any fruit or vegetable rich in vitamins A, C or E is a good addition –spinach contains lots of vitamin A and E, and oranges are a good source of vitamin C.
Just Add Almond Milk I use almond milk as a liquid for my smoothies. This is a good source of calcium and protein (although not as good as cow’s milk), but ideal if your lactose intolerant (as I found out in the DNA test). It also contains good omega 3 fatty acids. You could also add orange juice, but be wary of adding in too many fruits which can add calories and lead to blood sugar spikes. Leanne Spencer @BodyshotPT www.bodyshot-pt.co.uk

Dulwich Charity Lunch 2015
The Dulwich Charity lunch raised a fabulous £2,200 for Link Age Southwark (formerly Dulwich Helpline & Southwark Churches Care). The lunch, now in its 14th year, is held every December and is a fantastic way for local business men and women to meet up and get in to the festive spirit. This year the lunch was held at The Palmerston, who kindly closed the pub for the event. Over 55 local business men and women got together and had a great Christmas party. The organisers enjoyed great support from local businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and came
along and enjoyed the day. “This is the second time in five years we’ve been in the top 1%, and we’ve never been out of the top 3% in that time,” said Principal Jane Fletcher.
Our students were in the top 1% nationally for progress made, and amongst the best schools in London.
The figures measure progress across eight subjects between Year 7, when students start secondary school, and Year 11, when they sit their GCSE exams.
Students make more progress at Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich than at 99% of other state schools in England, according to new figures released by Ofsted.

Pets Corner
New Year: New Pet Diet
M
ost of us face 2016 with a host of resolutions in mind, a number probably involving a note to self about calorific intake and pursuit of moderation in all things. I suggest adding another line to that fridge magnet list and take a good look at your pet’s diet, because there is more than a grain of truth in the adage, ‘you are what you eat’. Obesity, diabetes, gut and pancreatic disease are all increasingly afflictions of the modern pet, and diet is thought to be a major factor. As a behaviourist, I see hyper dogs and vicious cats morph into sweet biddable pets overnight, once a change in diet has been made. Let’s be clear, cats are obligate carnivores, they need to eat meat. Not any old meat, but fresh, as close to live and kicking as possible. Look inside your cat’s mouth, these are teeth for piercing and tearing, not for grinding vegetables. In the wild cats would eat some carbohydrate from the undigested stomach contents of prey, but this would account for around 5% of their diet, not the 30% that is the norm in many packaged cat biscuits. Some proprietary cat foods are excellent, but it is wise to check the label on the packaging. Ground up bits of animal and fish do not count. Beaks, feathers and trotters may all get thrown into that category and will be called meat and animal derivatives. Sure, the animal attached to those body parts may have been passed fit for human consumption, but when did you last eat beaks on a regular basis? There is no such thing as a vegetarian cat, so why do we consider it okay to feed cats a main diet of biscuits? Plant protein concentrates and various types of grain or sugar beet are routinely used as biscuit bulking agents. These may raise the overall protein content of the product, but is it the sort of protein a cat was ever made to digest on a regular basis? No, is the answer. The quality of protein will always trump quantity. All those extra, unnecessary carbs simply get turned into

fat, and we wonder why our cat is getting porky? Our dogs fare no better. Unlike their wolf ancestors, they are opportunistic scavengers, not pure carnivores, and have evolved enzymes to digest carbohydrate in a way wolves cannot, but they still have the lupine short gut, and dentition, of the meat eater. So, if morphology is anything to go by, dogs have developed to digest starch if need be, but overall are designed to consume flesh. The convenience of kibble, together with clever marketing, persuades many of us that we are feeding our pets a quality diet. There is no doubt that our infinitely adaptable canine chums may appear to thrive on kibble but, as one eminent Vet explained to me, it is like feeding your kids chips with everything! Just take a look at your cat, is he getting fat despite eating very little? Is your pooch itchy, flatulent, irritable, edgy and unpredictable? Diet may be the culprit. A healthy pet has well formed, firm to hard stools; anything less should prompt dietary investigation and a visit to the vet. As responsible pet owners we have the opportunity to make informed choices for our pets, it doesn’t have to be hard - you just have to know where to look and how to read the labels. Do some research and discover the high quality options available. A place to start is: www.allaboutdogfood.co.uk/

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
Hamlet progress in FA Trophy
T
he club have continued their progress in the FA Trophy and will now have the novel opportunity to take opposition from up North, in the form of the winners of the Burscough vs Guiseley replay. Back at the tail end of November, Hamlet faced Margate at Champion Hill. The last time the two sides met back in April saw Dulwich defeated in the play off semi-finals, despite Margate’s consequent promotion there was clear recognition that there was potential for an upset. With the visitors largely dominating the first half, Freddy Ladapo received the ball on the edge of the box before placing the ball into the far corner of the net. Hamlet had attempts on goal to no avail but it was the final twenty minutes that saw the game turned on it’s head. The instrumental Ashley Carew, who has provided so many goals this season from set pieces swung a free kick into the penalty area, a poor defensive header saw the ball land to centre half Ethan Pinnock who promptly slammed the ball under the diving keeper to make it one a piece with fifteen minutes left on the clock. Euphoric celebrations broke out throughout the crowd and as the supporters belted out song after song, it was suddenly it was Hamlet themselves looking like the team from a higher division. Forward Ryan Moss, against the club he had only recently left, had an opportunity to show his former employers what they were missing but headed wide from Jordan Brown’s cross. Murrell-Williamson and Dean McDonald were too denied as the game approached added time. Forward came Nyren Clunis as he entered the penalty area and knocked the ball past his
opponent, the defender slipped and as he hit the ground handled the ball. The referee had no hesitation in awarding a penalty and what was surely the last chance of the game. Silence fell amongst the crowd of nearly 1500 as they nervously awaited the kick, Ashley Carew showed no nerves however, slotting home to send Hamlet into the 1st round proper. Some big names awaited Hamlet in the next round draw as the Conference National teams entered the fray but there was disappointed among some supporters when Hamlet discovered their opponents. This time it would be Hamlet who entered as favourites with an away tie at Bury Town from the Isthmian South. A professional performance saw Dulwich progress once again with goals from Clunis and Moss seeing out a 2-1 victory, providing the club with a rare test against northern opposition on 16th January. • Saturday 9th January – Enfield Town • Saturday 16th January – Burscough or Guiseley (FA Trophy) • Saturday 30th January – Harrow Borough Particularly in the winter months, please do keep an eye on the clubs website for fixture changes due to adverse weather or Cup commitments. www.pitchero.com/clubs/dulwichhamlet Dulwich Hamlet Supporters’ Trust info@dhst.org.uk | 07951 640099 @dhstorg

Financial Matters
The Beginning Of The End: The Annual Tax Return
A
s we begin our journey through January 2016, it may well be the end of the beginning or indeed the beginning of the end, for the tax return. In truth who really cares? However, the thousands of tax payers who have yet to file their selfassessment tax return should have a view. There is less than 30 filing days left until the dreaded 31st January deadline. However, 31st January is often misrepresented as solely being the deadline for online filing of tax returns. Whereas in truth the date has three features: 1) The filing deadline for personal tax returns. 2) The deadline for the payment of any outstanding income tax and national insurance for the tax year that ended on the previous 5th April; and 3) The deadline for making the first payment on account of income tax and national insurance for the current year. This will only be applicable if a taxpayer had a self-assessment liability greater than £1,000 in the previous tax year. Taxpayers who miss the 31st January 2016 deadline will be subject to a fixed £100 penalty. This will also apply even if the taxpayer had no income tax liability. In addition to the late filing penalty, the following penalties apply to late submission of tax returns: • From 3 months late: taxpayers will be charged an automatic daily penalty of £10 per day up to a £900 maximum. • From 6 months late: taxpayers will be charged additional penalties which are the greater of 5% of tax due or £300. • Over 12 months late: there are additional penalties based on the greater of 5% of tax due or £300. In serious cases this penalty may be increased up to 100% of tax due. Where the income tax and national insurance are paid late the following penalties will be triggered: • 30 days late: 5% of tax due
36 | SE22 - January 2016
• 6 months late: 5% of tax outstanding at that date • 12 months late 5% of the tax outstanding at that date These HMRC penalties for late submission and late payment is designed to lift the submission of tax returns from its current position of 92% achieved on 31st January 2015. Furthermore, tax payers may consider submitting their tax returns before the peak experienced on the last two days. Last year, 979,256 tax returns were filed on 30th and 31st January. Self-assessment filing of tax returns is 20 years old in the UK, yet the annual nagging of tax payers to submit their tax return on time continues. The evidence does not appear encouraging or positive for the Chancellor’s proposals to have every self-assessment taxpayers submit quarterly tax returns by 2020. Such a goal may be more idealistic than realistic. Quarterly tax returns are the flagship of the Chancellor’s digital tax revolution, which saw HMRC publish ‘Making Tax Digital’ on 14th December 2015. Perhaps it may not be the beginning of the end for the tax return. Taxpayers reluctant to comply with the current single annual tax return can now look forward to the quarterly tax return. The tinted glasses worn by our Chancellor may allow him to echo that being an online system should not present taxpayers with any additional burden. That may well be a truth but will it motivate taxpayers to engage with the tax system? If the Chancellor is correct then this could well signal the beginning of the end of apathy for tax return submissions. For our Chancellor, time will tell. In the case of taxpayers yet to submit their 2014-15 tax return, time may well tell as we skip through to 31st January.

Slashing Youth Services By 73%
S
outhwark Council is consulting on slashing its expenditure on providing Youth Services from £3.3m to less than £1m each year. Councils face stark choices with central government grants to councils being cut yet again. But focusing a 73% cut to the Youth Service on top of cuts to this service over the last four years seem shortsighted. It risks things like the local Peckham Rye Adventure Playground being significantly less available or even closed. Diverting teenagers with real activities can be critical especially with rising knife crime. If you think the council needs to look harder to make savings elsewhere please sign the petition http://tinyurl.com/ppy4nz5
Winter Reading Challenge Southwark has just launched this new challenge for children aged 4-17 on Monday 29 December running through to 31 March. The challenge is to read 10 books over 13 weeks. To join in the challenge children need to be a Southwark Library member, complete a logbook. They have the opportunity to win prizes. Good regular reading habits profoundly improve children’s life chance. Even preschool children being read to by family members makes a significant difference. So I really welcome this challenge and hope you take part if you have children. Going to one of our great local libraries would make a great New Years resolution…
London National Park City The idea is to make London a Park City accentuating the amazing amount of open spaces, trees and wildlife areas London has. This campaign has cross political party support across London. Sadly Cllr Rosie Shimell and I have not been able to get Cllr Charlie Smith to sign up to this idea. Without all three East Dulwich ward councilors agreeing we can’t join in. To be honest I thought this was totally uncontroversial! If you’d like to know more: http://www.nationalparkcity.london/ward_support or contact me with your thoughts.
Struggling Thirteen months ago a lady was knocked over by a hit and run at the junction of East Dulwich Grove and Lordship Lane. She is still recovering. A cyclist was knocked over by a lorry at the same junction a short while later. Despite lengthy hospital stays and a long convalescent period which has not yet finished, their suffering seems to be insufficient for this junction to be upgraded by TfL or Southwark council. I’ve visited the site with council officials and am still trying to get agreement about making it safer. It would really help if you signed this petition to show people want this junction made safer ASAP: www.ipetitions.com/petition/safer-lordship-lane
M&S This is not just a building nightmare this is an M&S building nightmare…the saga continues. The builders have been illegally building late into the evenings so we’ve organised a legal notice to stop doing this so residents can get some sleep. The site has now been made safe – it was accessible to children contrary to basic building H&S laws. The owners have now admitted they are building 10 flats – which is contrary to the approved plans and national policies about social housing. Whether you love or hate the idea of M&S coming to East Dulwich - and I personally like the idea - the way it is happening should be deeply embarrassing and is contrary to all stated M&S ethics. If you think they should do better tell their CEO marc.bolland@marks-and-spencer.com and please copy me.

Garden Talk
A Garden Room With A View
I
t’s not just men who need a cave – women need somewhere to retreat too. Have you heard of “she-sheds”? That’s the new lifestyle trend and I’m definitely fantasizing about it. Or it could be your teenage children who need to be contained at the end of the garden…you know, away from the house but still within boundaries? Whatever the reason, there are a few points to consider before embarking on “project garden room”.
What do you want it for? If you are going to use it as an office, art studio, playroom, gym, music room, to be used all year round, you’ll need heating, insulation and electricity. I would recommend then to avoid the cheap option and go for a proper garden studio which start at 15K and go up to 40K or more for bespoke, high end buildings.. If it’s a shed to potter around, informal play room, or a summer building you’re after then a customized sturdy shed (starting price £500/£600) will do the trick.
Impact on the garden The smaller the garden, the nicer the shed needs to be, as you’ll look directly onto it. It won’t feel rural, but a stylish courtyard in between house and shed, with a small tree in the middle, say, can look striking. Thoughtful placing is key to enhancing your space. A long thin garden can look broader with a shed spanning the back, while an L-shaped structure or putting the shed to the side creates depth. A monopitch roof with lower eaves at the front also makes the shed look further away. It’s also a good time to rethink the space around the shed, perhaps adding a pergola or deck for evening sun, or some garden lighting. A path, whether straight or serpentine, can create a nice visual connection between shed and house. Also think about orientation, balancing where the shed’s shadows will be cast. In any case your shed should blend with the landscape and be integrated within the planting and the whole garden, and not look like it landed from space. Consider the materials used for the shed carefully. Cedar cladding is stunning and weathers beautifully. A green roof will also help. If your shed is made with treated softwood which will therefore come in a rather unattractive brown, bright orange or green, paint it black! Black provides 38 | SE22 - January 2016
a great backdrop for planting and works in both contemporary or more traditional settings. Doors and windows help break up the façade, but too much symmetry can look a bit like a Wendy house. Finally the right planting will be key to frame, screen and soften the façade.
Council & Dulwich Estate planning permission In broad terms, outbuildings are considered permitted development and do not require a planning permission as long as you meet the conditions and limits. These are very clearly stated on the Southwark Council website, on this link: www.planningportal.gov.uk/permission/ commonprojects/outbuildings/miniguide However if your property belongs to the Dulwich Estate, even if the Council doesn’t require you applying for a planning permission, you must apply for permission to the estate Scheme of management. The application takes a minimum of 6 weeks and you will have to provide a sketch with measurements, levels, an elevation and materials proposed. In my experience as long as you put a reasonable proposal forward and show that you have carefully considered the impact on your neighbours and the planting surrounding the garden room, the permission will be granted. However you should never buy or commission it before the permission has been granted. Barbara Samitier - Garden Designer www.barbarasamitiergardens.co.uk

The Last Word – Sarah Pylas
S
arah Pylas is a local writer and blogger, who has been sharing stories about Greek/ English family life on her blog, Grenglish, since 2011. Since then she has written for The Huffington Post, various online parenting websites, SE22 magazine (see page 10) and is resident content writer on Around Dulwich! Sarah has just published a book of Greek meze, soups and dip recipes with her sister-in-law ‘Secrets from Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen’.
How long have you lived in the area? 7-years ago I moved into my boyfriend’s (now husband!) flat on Barry Road, then we moved to Thompson Road, which is possibly the shortest street in ED, when I was pregnant with my son. We moved up the hill a bit towards Honor Oak almost 4-years ago.
What brought you here? Love.
Do you belong to any groups? I belong to the East Dulwich WI, which has brought so many brilliant women and opportunities into my life.
The best meal I’ve ever had… I had an amazing meal at Pedler on Peckham Rye recently. It’s a great place to go with friends – yummy food, buzzy atmosphere and lovely staff! I also visited the newly refurbished Dulwich Woodhouse before Christmas and enjoyed a superb Sunday lunch with the family! Highly recommend going.
Where is your favourite place to eat? Si Mangia on Forest Hill Road is a family favourite. They make fresh gluten-free pasta to order, so it means I can tuck in with everyone else instead of picking at a salad.
Your favourite place to go for a drink? I love to share a litre of Muscadet from the tanks at Toasted, but the rioja at The Palmerston is my absolute favourite.
Where’s your favourite place to walk? One Tree Hill. The views are incredible.
When I want to relax... I love to unwind with a bit of trash telly, red wine and a take-away. 40 | SE22 - January 2016
What is your favourite shop? Ooooh, I have two! Through the Trees on Zenoria Road and The Dulwich Trader in West Dulwich are both fab.
And the last thing you bought there? I bought birthday gifts for my sister, my mum, both of my sister-in-laws and my mother-in-law all from The Dulwich Trader! Through the Trees is somewhere I go when I want to treat myself although it is dangerous, as I always want everything! Nick has a great eye.
Best bargain you’ve ever landed… My house! There is no way we could afford to buy it now. House prices in the area are insane now.
My secret ambition… It’s no secret, but to successfully launch the Greek range of dips from our book and see them on shelves in all good supermarkets would be the dream! That, and appearing as an extra on Eastenders. ‘Secrets from Yiayia’s Greek Kitchen’ is available on Amazon now for £7.99 www.yiayiaskouzina.co.uk / @yiayiaskouzina www.grenglish.co.uk / @grenglishblog
