Welcome

It’s May and it is my favourite month of the year. Not just because it’s my birthday but because it is the return of the fabulous Dulwich Festival which is celebrating 25 years this year! There are so many amazing events to choose from you will definitely need to check out the full programme of events, with ticket details at www.dulwichfestival.co.uk. We have a preview of the Artists’ Open House on pages 16 & 17. Make sure you pick up one of the booklets so you can plan your visits. Along with the great programme of events there are the two fabulous fairs. The festival starts with the fantasic Festival Fair on Goose Green on the 13 May, ending with the lovely Dulwich Park Fair on the final Sunday (20). New this year is the Alice in Wonderland Themed Funday along North Cross Road on Saturday 12 May. If you love East Dulwich and love taking photos, why not enter the competition on page 23. More details next month. The Last Word this month goes to Claire Empson, who many of you will have seen campaigning around East Dulwich in the last month or so, see p48. Until next time.

his year’s Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House will take place over the weekends of 12-13 and 19-20 May, 11-6pm. Over 250 South London-based artists will open their homes and studios, giving the public an opportunity to view their work and talk to the makers about their creative processes. This year's artists will represent a huge range of styles and disciplines, ranging from painting, photography and illustration to ceramics, jewellery, textiles and model dioramas, many in the intimate setting of their own homes and studios. The Festival’s Artists’ Open House is also an opportunity to discover a diverse range of

hidden creative communities within your own local neighbourhood; from industrial warehouses in Peckham, to grand manor houses in Dulwich. Tucked away behind the busy thoroughfare of Forest Hill, Havelock Mews is a charming cobbled street with a delightfully incongruous mix of buildings. Wander through the studios, chat with the artists and designers; relax in the sunshine as you take in a live music set or sample some street food. Or why not head over to Copeland Park and the iconic Bussey Building in Peckham and visit one of the vibrant community’s latest offerings; the Kiln Rooms Clay Store is a showcase for dozens of up-and-coming ceramic artists and designers.

Around Dulwich with Sarah Pylas May Round-up

M

ay is a fantastic time to live in and around Dulwich. After a shaky start, it seems spring has finally sprung and Instagram is brimming with sunny terraces, alfresco dining, and ice-cold glasses of #rosé! Not that the weather could ever stop me from enjoying the latter… The annual Dulwich Festival will run from 11th - 20th May this year and celebrates the very best our area has to offer! The jam-packed Festival programme includes artists’ open house weekends (12-13 May), street art walks (13 May), talks, food trails, music, and the popular festival fairs (13 and 20 May). This year’s Food Trail features a truly mouth-watering array of scrumptious offerings from some of the best restaurants and cafés in the area. Platform 1 restaurant on Lordship Lane will be offering walk-in wine flights for £15 per person with a wine list that focuses on rare and indigenous varieties. I’ve been on a wine flight with Platform 1 before and can highly recommend it. Other highlights for me include the Havelock Walk May Open Studios (12-13 May and 19-20 May), a local history walk from prehistoric times to recent history with Peter Frost of the Peckham Society (13 May), and a bat walk with the London Wildlife Trust in Sydenham Hill Wood (11 May). Visit www.dulwichfestival.co.uk for tickets to all festival events. In non-festival news, Bell House is hosting some very interesting events this year. ‘The Secret Life of the Teenage Brain’ with Sarah-Jayne Blakemore (22nd May) explores what makes an easy child become a challenging teenager, why they struggle to get up in the morning, and what makes teenagers take excessive risks. I don’t have a teenager yet, although both my 8-year old and my husband share some similar traits so it can’t hurt to prepare! Also at Bell House this month, join Christie Watson and Caroline Elton (8 May) as they discuss the NHS; share their views of life behind the scenes and what it is like for the teams that look after us in hospitals. Back again this year, The Modern Movement, south London’s prestigious, free festival celebrating 20th century design, is taking place at Brockwell Lido (5-6 May). Dulwich Park Bowls

10 | SE22 - May 2018

Club is hosting an Open Day (20 May). All levels welcome. The only requirement is that you wear flat shoes or bowl bare-footed. The first ever model railway show is coming to Dulwich (26 May). The event is being held at James Allen’s Girls’ School and visitors can see up to 20 model railway layouts on show in a variety of scales. The East Dulwich Tavern is hosting their second annual Children’s Festival over the May half term, this time with a focus on the arts! The event features a silly science show, comedy for kids, storytelling, and a kids’ disco finale. Next month sees the return of the Crystal Palace Arts and Culture Festival (11-17 June). The Dulwich Opera Company is returning to All Saints Church, West Dulwich (16 June) with Mozart’s classic tale of love and deception Così fan Tutte. Until next time folks… #rosécalling As always, details of all local news, events and ticket information can be found on our website and on Instagram @arounddulwich. www.arounddulwich.co.uk Follow us on @arounddulwich

Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw

May Flowering Plants Gardens can often lack colour in late spring/ early summer when there’s lots of foliage but not enough flowers. Here’s my pick of ten of the best May flowering plants to fill the gap.

1) Aquilegia vulgaris var. stellata ‘Black Barlow’ With delicate flowers on long stems, this dark plum variety is equally at home in cottage garden schemes or more contemporary settings with grasses and euphorbias. Aquilegias are short lived but self-seed easily creating a naturalistic feel and are happiest in moist soil in sun or dappled shade.

2) Iris ‘Jane Phillips’ Whether rich velvety purples or this delicate pale blue variety, bearded iris are a spectacular sight in May - and their grey/ blue strappy leaves add texture too. Plant them with the upper part of the rhizome on the soil surface in the sun so they can bake. Another option is the more delicate clump forming Iris sibiricas such as mid blue ‘Silver Edge’, which has narrower leaves and likes more moisture.

3) Papaver orientale ‘Patty’s Plum’ The paper-thin petals of this gorgeous pinky purple perennial poppy are fleeting, but are so beautiful it’s worth it. Plant in sun or part shade, with grasses or late flowerers such as penstemon to keep the interest going.

4) Paeonia ‘Early Windflower’ Like poppies, peonies make a short lived but lavish show. This early flowering variety has delicate single white blooms with a golden eye. Slightly later comes the more blowsy white P. lactiflora ‘Duchesse de Nemours’. Plant in sun or part shade depending on the variety, stake to avoid flopping and avoid planting too deeply.

5) Libertia chilensis More useful than showy, this has stylish evergreen sword like leaves and pure white flowers on long stems from May. Likes full sun or part shade.

6) Erysimum ‘Bowles’s Mauve’ The mauve flower spires on this perennial wallflower actually start in February and last into October, which along with its grey green evergreen leaves

Photo by Richard Loader on Unsplash

make it hugely useful for smaller spaces. It’s happy in sun or part shade and contrasts well with zingy Euphorbia characias wulfenii.

7) Allium hollandicum ‘Purple Sensation’ Alliums are the perfect late spring/early summer bulb and this popular variety has deep purple flowers on 90cm stems. It looks wonderful in drifts popping up through ornamental grasses, euphorbias, box balls or lavenders to hide the tatty foliage. Plant in autumn in full sun.

8) Anthemis tinctoria ‘Sauce Hollondaise’ This soft creamy yellow daisy is so pretty and perfectly complements blues and purples, cheering up the border in May to July. Likes full sun and well drained soil.

9) Erigeron karvinskianus A more low growing daisy with masses of tiny white flowers turning pink from May until October. It thrives in well-drained soil, in sun or part shade where it’ll form lovely mounds at the front of a border or along paths – also good in pots.

10) Viburnum x burkwoodii This is a gorgeous shrub with heavenly clusters of pink buds opening to beautifully scented white flowers in April and May. Plant in full sun or part shade near a path or in the front garden to fully appreciate the perfume.

Food & Drink with Suzanne James

Asparagus & Cheddar Tart Serves approximately: 4 People Preparation time: 30 Minutes Cooking time 30 Minutes There is only one thing on my mind at this time of year – English Asparagus. We are hoping the ‘Beast from the East’ hasn’t put things back too much – right now we are on track for the season to start on the 23rd April – Hurrah!

Ingredients Pastry • 140g Plain flour • 85g Butter Cubed • 100g Cheddar • Pinch Cayenne Pepper Filling • 5 eggs • 175ml Milk • 125g Cheddar • 25g Parmesan • 300g Asparagus • Truffle Oil (to finish)

Method 1) Put the flour in a bowl, add the butter to the flour and rub in with your fingertips until it resembles breadcrumbs. Add the grated cheddar and Cayenne into the pastry and mix. Add 3 tbsp cold water and mix until the pastry forms a ball. Wrap in cling film and chill for 5 mins. Butter a 20 x 6cm deep loosebottom tart tin, or a 35 x 12cm rectangular tart tin. 2) Heat oven to 180C/fan 160C/gas 4. Lightly dust the work surface with flour, roll out the pastry and line the tin. Chill in the freezer for 20 mins, then line the pastry case with baking paper, fill with beans and cook for 15 mins. Remove the beans and paper, then return the pastry case to the oven for 10 mins. 3) Crack the eggs into a jug, whisk, then add the milk and whisk again. Sprinkle half the grated cheese over the pastry case, then add the asparagus, egg mix and remaining cheese (if using a rectangular tin, you may not need all the mixture, so add it gradually). Bake in the lower half of the oven for 30-35 mins or until the egg mix is set. Drizzle with truffle oil before serving. 14 | SE22 - May 2018

his year’s Dulwich Festival Artists’ Open House will take place over the weekends of 12-13 and 19-20 May, 11-6pm.

Based just by the green leafy peace of SE15’s Peckham Rye, The Nourish Shed is now welcoming busy local women to melt away their stress and facial tension, enliven lacklustre skin and workout facial muscles. Ele, Founder of the Nourish Shed, herself used to suffer from all sorts of skin concerns, not to mention facial tension that had accumulated from the non-stop every day that is London life. Having been astounded by the benefits of having a facial massage herself, Ele re-trained to be able to start up her own business offering the treatment. Now, Ele thoroughly enjoys bringing an hour of calm, facial lifting and a release of all that tension to keep the busy women of SE London revitalised and rejuvenated. Are you a local charity, group or organisation? Do you want a platform to engage with the 1000’s of members of the East Dulwich community on a regular basis? An action group comprising of East Dulwich businesses, market traders and residents we are working together to celebrate the independent spirit of East Dulwich and strengthen ties between all members of the community. One way we hope to achieve this by adding a ‘Community Stall’ to the weekly Saturday market on North Cross Road. This Community Stall which will be available to a short-list of approved local charities and groups on a rotating basis will provide your organisation the opportunity to engage with the community and raise funds, recruit volunteers or just tell them what you are up to. If you would like to know more or book a week on the North Cross Road Market Community Stall for your organisation then please email us at eastdagroup@gmail.com

Dulwich Hamlet FC - News

Potential Promotion?

A

t the time of writing, Dulwich Hamlet head into the last two weeks of the regular season sitting in second place in the league. Sitting in second place with a play-off place now guaranteed, the team still could still finish in top spot and with it securing the one automatic promotion place on offer in the Isthmian Premier League. The play-off’s involve the four clubs finishing just below the league winners with the Semi-finals taking place on Thursday 27 April. The final itself scheduled to take place on May Day bank holiday (Monday 1 May). Both the Semi-finals and Final are one off games, with the highest placed team, at the end of the regular season given home advance. Therefore, if the team was not able to secure the automatic promotion spot by finishing the season as champions, finishing in second place could secure two home ties in this year’s play-offs. Information on the remaining league and possible play-off games, can be found by visiting the clubs official website www.pitchero.com/ clubs/dulwichhamlet Given all the events taking place ‘off’ the pitch, the fact that the club are still one of the favourites to secure promotion to the National Conference South is an amazing achievement in itself. If you are not aware of the current off-field issues the club has been facing this season, the current owners of Champion Hill Stadium ended their financial support of the football club in November 2017. To make matters worse, last month, they terminated the Licence agreement that allowed the team to play on the ground that Dulwich Hamlet has been calling home for over 90 years and made public that they had Trade Marked ‘Dulwich Hamlet Football Club’, ‘DHFC’ and ‘The Hamlet’. On Saturday 14 April, the Supporters’ Trust hosted a fundraising party at the East Dulwich Tavern to raise funds for the Club’s 12th Man fund. The party was well-attended with great music from our DJs, prizes won in the raffle and some very good prices realised in the auction.

24 | SE22 - May 2018

Supporters at the fundraiser at the EDT £2340.00 was raised on the night! Thank you to everyone who attended and we hope everyone had an enjoyable time. We must also extend our sincere thanks to the team at the East Dulwich Tavern, Lordship Lane, for providing the venue free of charge. Lastly, a big thank you to all the individuals and businesses who donated prizes for the raffle and auction. The support for the football club in not only East Dulwich community but also much of the surrounding area has been nothing short of phenomenal. Together with the Xmas fundraising the Supporters’ Trust have been able to raise just only £5,500 for the 12th Man Scheme. The 12th Man is a long-standing scheme set up to help fund player signings for Dulwich Hamlet, this season it has now turned into our main source of funding the football club.

Financial Matters with David Frederick

What’s new on the 2018-19 tax horizon?

I

t is never too early to start planning especially tax planning. So although we are already one month into 2018-19, let’s take a look at some of what lies ahead on the tax horizon. The march towards the £1m inheritance tax allowance continues. The residence nil rate band (RNRB) which was introduced on 6th April 2017 has increased by a further £25,000. Which takes the inheritance tax allowance up to £450,000 for anyone who dies after 6th April 2018 and leaves an interest in their principal private residence to a direct descendant. The allowance is double for a married couple or civil partners. It is worth noting that the allowance will become £1m from 6th April 2021, as the RNRB is due to rise by £25,000 over the next two fiscal years. Personal tax payers will already be enjoying the increase in their personal allowance to £11,850. However, at the other end of the salary scale, taxpayers enjoying a salary over £100,000 are experiencing the loss of their personal allowance of £1 per £2 over the threshold. In addition, the new basic rate tax band of £34,500 results in taxpayers paying higher rate tax of 40% on income over £46,350. Taxpayers with capital gains in 2018-19 will enjoy an increase of 3.5% in the capital gains tax annual exemption, from £11,300 to £11,700. Individual landlords will continue to be hit by the reduction in their allowable mortgage interest which began in 2017-18. The mortgage interest this year is capped at 50%. The residual mortgage interest will be given in the form of an allowable basic rate tax credit. Taxpayers who are remunerated via dividends will be hit the worst with a 60% reduction in the dividend allowance from £5,000 last year to the current level of £2,000. The cost to taxpayers arising from this reduction in the dividend allowance is as follows; £225 for basic rate taxpayers; £975 for higher rate taxpayers; and £1,143 for additional rate taxpayers. All employees who are now in an

28 | SE22 - May 2018

automatically enrolled workplace pension scheme will have experienced a threefold increase in their monthly contribution since 6th April. This is the result of government policy to encourage employees to plan for their retirement period. Employee auto enrolled pension contributions were set at the following rates: 1% in 2017-18; 3% in 2018-19; and 5% next year. The increase is not a one-sided attack on employees as some employees may think. Employers have also experienced a 100% increase in their contributions this year. Although, the increased contributions may reduce employees’ disposable income today, it is designed to boost their future disposable income at a time when they may be less capable of exploiting alternative employment opportunities. Another tax planning opportunity for 2018-19 includes the scope to save a maximum of £20,000 into an ISA or £4,260 for minors into a junior ISA. Furthermore, taxpayers who qualify for the lifetime ISA can save a maximum of £4,000. The landscape also has additional pension opportunities for taxpayers not within autoenrolled workplace schemes. The maximum annual pension allowance of £40,000 is still available and any unused allowance can be carried forward for a maximum of three years. Therefore, any taxpayer with any unused allowance from 2015-16 must ensure they use it this fiscal year otherwise it will be lost. Whilst on the subject of unused allowances, any taxpayer who failed to use their inheritance tax £3,000 gift exemption in 2017-18, must use this allowance by 5th April 2019 because it may only be carried forward for one year. On reflection the 2018-19 tax planning horizon is somewhat mixed for taxpayers. David Frederick FCCA Principal Marcus Bishop Associates Chartered Certified Accountants

SE22 Councillors with James Barber

Local Station

Problems of councillors rather than under council officer delegated powers. No other East Dulwich ward councillor has called in any East Dulwich planning applications. Calling-in an application seems to lead to a much higher level of scrutiny of a scheme. It is a critical part of the process of being an effective councillor. It is part of protecting Lordship Lane as a shopping high street for example. I’d like to thank those residents who subsequently attend those planning committees helping is get the best decision to try Keeping East Dulwich Special.

Where Have All The Trees Gone Denmark Hill and Peckham Rye stations are suffering terrible dangerous levels of overcrowding. From 16 April Denmark Hill has had dedicated people for crowd control purposes to enforce a one-way system for people entering and existing the station. Denmark Hill train operators have applied for funding for a second station entrance on Windsor Walk. I plan to meet them mid-May, election result willing, to discuss when and how this will be implemented. Peckham Rye station changes were first proposed by my lot in 2008 so it is disappointing that decade later they’ve not really got going let along finished. That mid My meeting I will use to push for more action – We must make this station safer for passengers ASAP. East Dulwich station looks a mess. GLA Assembly Member Caroline Pidgeon and I met with the train operator last month to discuss ticket machines, ticket office, litter, graffiti, platform waiting areas, platform heights, indicator sign visibility. At our next meeting we expect to hear about positive progress in these areas – we will keep you posted.

Are We Keeping East Dulwich Special Every year around 350 Planning Applications are made related to the East Dulwich area. Cllr Rosie Shimell and I check every one of them out and also other applications just outside the border. Of those we have asked for 16 to be called-in. A callin is where two of the boroughs 63 councillors ask for an application to be decided by a committee 36 | SE22 - May 2018

Southwark has chopped down or fallen 2,248 trees and replanted only 869 trees so a net loss of 1,379 tres over the last four years. This deforestation has particularly hit the East Dulwich area. You can tell when you see a vacant tree pit. Southwark has a total of 144 vacant empty tree pits. But 68 of them are in our area. The current council administration has introduced ever tighter rules to make replanting trees harder. Sometimes trees have to be removed if they’re damaging homes, sometimes due to disease but all should be replanted with the right tree. If you have an empty tree pit close to your home, please tell us the type of tree you’d like to see planted there. Our aim is to have no empty tree pits.

Car Parking – for or against controlled parking? We’re getting a good response with people telling us whether they’re for or against controlled parking. What do you think? You can share your views for or against Controlled Parking online here - https://www.surveymonkey.co.uk/r/KFPKXJD The only compulsory questions are your views on controlled parking and your name and address to ensure respondents live here! Or if you’d like a paper survey please let me know and I’ll pop round with one. 07900 227366 | cllrjamesbarber@gmail.com @cllrjamesbarber | www.jamesbarber.org.uk

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

How to avoid gaining weight in your 40s

W

e tend to think that gaining weight is something that happens with ageing, but this isn’t the case. It is, however, really important to monitor your body composition as you get older, to avoid putting yourself at risk of things like diabetes and other types of metabolic conditions. Here are four things you can do to avoid gaining weight into your 40s.

1) Energy Balance Monitor Your Energy Balance. (Calories in versus calories burned from exercise). If you have less energy being expended, then you need to monitor and reduce the amount of energy that’s going into the body. Take a look at your food consumption and ensure that you’re not eating the diet that you were still eating when you were much more active. Also, try to include the following: More daily life movement: This could include taking the stairs not the escalator or walking 10,000 steps a day. Moderate exercise: Combine more daily movement with moderate exercise three to five times a week e.g. a light jog or lots of brisk walking. High intensity exercise: Ideally a couple of times a week; you want to get your heart rate up, get yourself out of breath where conversation would be tricky to have whilst you’re doing it.

2) Metabolism Your metabolism slows down as you get older, so it’s important, to review your diet. Specifically, eating fewer refined carbohydrates and processed foods, and increasing your intake of fruit and vegetables. Also monitor portion control, putting slightly less on your plate for less active days.

3) Stress Typically we tend to feel more stress as we get older, perhaps because we have mortgages, kids, more senior or stressful jobs, less leisure time, and we possibly have ageing parents and more dependants. An increase in stress produces more of the hormone cortisol, and can result in two 38 | SE22 - May 2018

Photo by Jennifer Burk on Unsplash

things. It can cause us to overeat, and increased cortisol levels in the body can instruct the liver to release glucose. This in turn puts us in the state where we’ve got lots of glucose in the blood and that’s not a healthy thing. Therefore, managing stress is important. You can do this through meditation and mindfulness, making sure you get the right amount of sleep and exercise (the appropriate type and intensity). Also, prioritise ways of recovering after exercise and incorporating some relaxation; meditation is one example, along with reading. Finally, particularly for women who are reading this, as women hit their 40s, they can potentially start to move into the perimenopausal stage. At this stage our oestrogen levels drop, which means that the body has a propensity towards storing fat, which could result in weight gain. Progesterone levels also dip, and that can cause bloating and water retention. Also, our insulin sensitivity increases which is why it’s so important to monitor diet as you could be in a state where you have high levels of insulin, which can cause weight gain. Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

Teaching a Dog to Settle

G

etting the right balance between activity and rest is a tough call for many dog and puppy owners. Attempting to burn off energy by increasing exercise and activity only adds to the problem, creating an adrenalin junkie pet. What every dog and owner needs is an ‘off switch’ and one way is by teaching the dog to settle on cue. There are two phases to teaching settle. In the first part we use a mat to teach the dog to move to a specific place. In the second we teach the dog to lie down and relax while he is in that place, slowly increasing the duration.

Teach your dog to settle in a specific place using a mat (always put the mat away after training) 1) Put the mat down on the floor away from distractions. Now put a treat onto it and allow your dog to investigate the treat. As soon as he puts his paws on the mat say ‘yes’ give another, better treat. Now pick up the mat. 2) Repeat, putting the mat somewhere else in the room. When your dog steps on the mat, say ‘yes’ and give a treat, then remove the mat. Repeat all over the room, until your dog is whizzing over to the mat every time you put it down. 3) Next, point to the mat and say ‘settle’ before your dog steps on it. Reward and start to introduce a release command (‘OK’) before you remove the mat and your dog steps off it. 4) Wait for your dog to have all his feet on the mat before you reward and release. Now increase the contact time before reward and release. 5) Your goal is for your dog to go to his mat without hesitation when you point and say ‘settle’ and that he stays on it for a minimum of 20 seconds in any position without prompting from you. Once you achieve this go to step 2.

time put your foot on the lead, just so your dog has enough leeway to stand on the mat. You need to be positioned so you can keep a foot on the lead while you are seated in your chair. 8) Ignore your dog until he lies down on the mat, if he does say ‘settle, good settle’, put some more treats between his paws and then ignore him. If he stays in position for a few seconds, praise, reward and release (‘OK’) 9) Waiting until your dog chooses to lie down is crucial. Some dogs will lie down within minutes, others will take half an hour, and some may buck, rear and pull to get away. Whatever your dog does, just calmly wait for him to lie down and follow the steps in 8. With persistence and practice you will find your dog starts to lie down more quickly each time. 10) The magic moment occurs when as soon as your dog sees the mat he goes to it and lies down. When this happens stop the session, remove the mat and play a game your dog loves. 11) Now start to randomise reward at each training session. Sometimes your dog gets a treat, other times he doesn’t; occasionally he gets a large piece of something he loves (jackpot). 12) Once your dog goes to the mat and settles whenever you tell him to, start to increase the time he stays on the mat. Sometimes reward and release him immediately; other times ask for a bit longer. Aim for a minute before you reward. 13) Again, if your dog starts to resist just keep your foot on the lead and wait for him to lie down; reward and release. Your dog will begin to understand that only calm behaviour gets rewarded. 14) Start to use other areas of the house to practise ‘settle’ and build duration. The final stage is to go out of sight. Put the mat on the other side of the door of a small space, like a toilet and build duration.

Learning to relax (Put your dog on a lead) 6) Find a comfortable chair and something to occupy yourself. Put the training mat by your chair. 7) When your dog goes to check the mat, praise him and drop some treats onto it. At the same 44 | SE22 - May 2018

The Last Word – Claire Empson Claire Empson is a local resident, mum of two, the owner of Daisy Lets & Sales and is standing for election in the council elections on the 3rd May in the Goose Green ward.

How long have you lived in the area?

I lived in East Dulwich for 10 years and on the edge of ED/Forest Hill border now for 5 years

What brought you here?

I wanted to move from Croydon and start a family, East Dulwich was the only part of London I wanted to live in, mainly due to it’s village feel. I’d always liked driving through Dulwich Village past the gallery with the white signposts on the roundabout! I moved Daisy Lets & Sales to Lordship Lane in 2011 after working from home in East Dulwich and then moved towards Forest Hill to get a larger garden for my two very active boys!

Do you belong to any groups?

I run a support group for Mums in Business in East Dulwich, attend CwS, a local networking group and I’m now the co-chair of the Southwark branch of the Women’s Equality Party (WEP) and am now standing in the upcoming local council elections in Goose Green (Formerly East Dulwich).

Where are you to be found on Saturday?

At the moment – knocking on doors all around East Dulwich and talking to residents while my boys play football! Normally I will be at a yoga class, walking my black Labrador, or being chef/ taxi/sounding board for my boys.

Where’s your favourite place to walk?

I still love walking down the street in East Dulwich and bumping into someone I know for a chat! However being so close to the woods is a major advantage being a dog owner now, I love walking through Dulwich & Sydenham woods feeling in touch with nature and Dulwich Park is great while the kids are at football – getting all this on your doorstep would be rare in other parts of London.

When I want to relax...

I meditate or do yoga – I have been practising TM (Transcendental Meditation) for three years and I became a Reiki Master last year, after starting around 18 years ago! Daily Reiki on myself whilst meditating for 20 mins keeps me going.

Coffee or tea? Where? Coffee – a large Soya Latte! – My current favourite cafe is Lucas on North Cross Road, for their amazing pottery and Vegan cake option

The best meal I’ve ever had… Weirdly, as I’ve now been living off it for years as it’s a family staple, but in my mind it was the first time I ever had fresh spinach pasta and fresh pesto with black olives as a newly vegetarian teenager at some friends of my parents. I still remember how much I loved it. Nothing has ever come close in my memory banks, even my now favourite - a lovely fresh Thai or Viet curry and spring or summer roll can’t top the memory of that yummy garlicky pasta!

If money was no object…

I’d pay off my mortgage, treat my boys, do Yoga retreats in the sun, donate lots to homeless charities and fund some new women’s refuges 48 | SE22 - May 2018
