"The Way We Live Now"
11 - 13th November 2016 Dulwich College www.dulwichliteraryfestival.co.uk Twitter @dulwichlitfest All details correct at time of publication. The Dulwich Literary festival takes its theme from the Anthony Trollope novel The Way We Live Now. First published in book form in 1875, Trollope’s novel was inspired by the financial scandals of the early 1870s. The author had returned to England from Australia and sought to express his shock and disgust at the extent to which greed and corruption had become systemic in the spheres of politics, commerce, journalism and diplomacy. In 2016, as the world trains its gaze towards the centenary of the Russian Revolution of 1917, it seems fitting to re-examine Trollope’s exposé of British society, rich in satire and drama, and to compare and contrast it to how we live today. With some of UK’s bestknown names in politics, fiction, poetry and history on the adult programme, there is also have a series of children’s events to entertain and delight
Friday 11th November 19:00 Called to Account £15 Margaret Hodge & Harriet Harman Two women who have given exceptional public service to the UK discuss a crucial aspect of
contemporary life, the way in which corporations and governments intersect. Can national governments in the 21st century ever exert sufficient power to rein in global corporate interests? Can the Treasury maximize tax revenue as multi-nationals battle to minimize tax liability? Can economies of scale ever realistically be achieved in the public sector? Margaret Hodge has unique insights from her time as Chair of the House of Commons Public Accounts Committee 2012 – 2015. Venue: The George Farha Auditorium, Dulwich College

November News By Sarah Pylas
T
he days are long, but the years are short’ or so the saying goes. While many used the extra hour offered last weekend when the clocks went back for a little bit more shuteye, many parents of young children probably felt like it was the longest day of the year. It has been 15 long years since Bridget Jones got together with Mark Darcy and I could not wait to see what happened next when her third installment hit our screens last month. I giddily organised a night out to see Bridget Jones’s Baby with a couple of other “smug marrieds.” As it was a Friday night, we started with a cocktail at House of Tippler before making our way to East Dulwich Picturehouse. Sadly, in all my excitement I had booked the wrong night. Any smugness duly vanished as the four of us were left stranded in the foyer. We managed to rebook for the following Sunday, which had much less of a margarita feel to it, but even without a bottle of chardonnay inside us, we still rolled about in our chairs laughing until we cried. Earlier that weekend, I took my son to an 8th birthday party at the Herne Hill Velodrome, which is tucked discreetly away behind the houses of Burbage Road. The track is the only remaining venue still in operation from the 1948 Olympic Games and it really is a fantastic party space. They also offer track sessions and school holiday clubs, so definitely add it to your list of fun things to do with kids. As we wipe the Halloween facepaint away and send the kids back to school for the second half of autumn term, it is hard to believe we are already in the penultimate month of 2016. However, there is still much to do in and around Dulwich before we dive into the festive season. The annual family fireworks display at
Dulwich Sports Club is guaranteed to light up these dark November nights. Arrive before 6pm to ensure entry and a good view. Another highlight of the month is the annual Dulwich Literary Festival from 11-13 November. This year, the festival takes its theme from the Anthony Trollope novel The Way We Live Now and promises some of the UK’s best-known names in politics, fiction, poetry and history in the adult programme, as well as a series of children’s events. The end of November brings with it our first helping of Christmas cheer. The Charter School will open its gates for a Christmas Fair on Thursday 24th while Havelock Walk are hosting their Winter Open Studios event on 26th and 27th. The festivities will then officially be in full swing! East Dulwich will host a street festival with all the trimmings when the Christmas Cracker returns on Saturday 3rd December, and tickets will soon be available for the annual Dulwich Charity Lunch, which raises thousands of pounds every year for local charity Link Age Southwark. As always, you can find details of all local news, events, and ticket information over on our website. You can also find us on Facebook and follow us on Twitter @arounddulwich.

Hectic Host
Fireside Fun
I
t is that time of year when we move the party indoors and start to cocoon with family and friends, as the evenings get longer and the fire becomes ever more tempting. Having spent the summer flitting from one social event to another the winter provides a comforting sanctuary where the only pressure is to relax and enjoy the company. In front of the fire the conversation flows and friends we have known for years become even greater ones. It is for those very evenings that it is always a good idea to have a few icebreakers on the back burner – it never a good idea to too heavily grill a new guest – and sometimes even the closet groups need a little conversational inspiration, especially if the alcohol is flowing too. A favourite game of mine I played in my youth and is one our friends used to call ‘Machiavelli’ – presumably as the founder of modern political science was one of the hardest subjects to guess. When checking online to see if we were playing by the standard recognised rules I found no mention of it, instead it seems to be called now the rather less glamorous Post-it Note Game. In, and on, my head it will remain ‘Machiavelli’. At the start of the game players write the name of a famous personality, alive or dead, on a Post-it Note and apply it to the forehead of the person sitting next to them. One player starts by asking a question to which the response may only be ‘yea’ or ‘no’. The usual first starter is ‘am I alive?’ Questions are asked until the answer is ‘no’ at which stage the next player starts. The scope for hilarity is huge and the opportunities for a little subtle leg pulling are enormous; but like your Whiskey Sour, it is probably best taken with a pinch of salt.
And for that time of the evening when even the thought of trying to remember the name of that existential philosopher or the dead dog from EastEnders fills you with horror, then a simple game of Wink Murder will stop the party flagging. A number of folded Post-it Notes equal to the number of guests are placed in a hat (why do we always say hat, has anyone ever been anywhere where an actual hat had been used? In fact, it would be most odd if anyone suddenly produced one halfway through a soiree). The Post-it Notes are all blank apart from one, which nominates the recipient as the detective. Players must subversively wink at their victims without detection. It’s not quite as suspenseful as an episode of The Fall but it has its merits and its plays out a lot quicker.
Whiskey Sour 50 ml of whiskey, 25 ml of freshly squeezed lemon juice, half a teaspoon of sugar, an egg white and a pinch of salt. Shake all the ingredients in a cocktail shaker and pour into a tumbler filled with ice. Serve with a slice of orange. 12 | SE22 - November 2016

Food & Drink with Suzanne James
Chilli Con Carne A fantastic alternative to traditional chilli. Serves 4
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 tbsp oil 1 large onion 1 red pepper 2 garlic cloves, peeled 1 heaped tsp hot chilli powder 1 tsp paprika 1 tsp ground cumin 500g lean minced beef 1 beef stock cube/ home made stock 1 can chopped tomatoes 1 tsp sugar 2 tbsp tomato puree 400g red kidney beans 400 diced chorizo
Serve with Soured Cream, Guacamole, Tortilla Chips, Jacket Potatoes, or Brown Rice.
Method Prepare your vegetables; Dice 1 large onion, Cut 1 red pepper in half lengthways, remove stalk and wash the seeds away, then chop. Peel and finely chop 2 garlic cloves. Put your pan on the hob over a medium heat. Add the oil and leave it for 1-2 minutes until hot. Add the onions & the Chorizo and cook, stirring fairly frequently until the onions are soft, squidgy and slightly translucent. Tip in the garlic, red pepper, one heaped teaspoon hot chilli powder or one level tablespoon mild chilli powder, one teaspoon paprika and one teaspoon ground cumin. Give it a good stir, then leave it to cook for another 5 minutes, stirring occasionally. Brown the 500g lean minced beef. Turn the heat up a bit, add the meat to the pan and break it up with your spoon or spatula. Keep stirring and prodding for at least 5 minutes, until all the mince is in uniform, mince-sized lumps and there are no more pink bits. Make sure you keep the heat hot enough for the meat to fry and become brown, rather than just stew. Crumble one beef stock cube or use homemade stock into 300ml hot water. Pour this into the pan with the mince mixture. Open one 400g can of 14 | SE22 - November 2016
chopped tomatoes and add these as well. Tip in ∞ teaspoon dried marjoram and 1 teaspoon sugar, if using and add a good shake of salt and pepper. Add about two tablespoons of tomato purée and stir the sauce well. Simmer gently. Bring the whole thing to the boil, give it a good stir and put a lid on the pan. Turn down the heat until it is gently bubbling and leave it for 20 minutes. You should check on the pan occasionally to stir the mixture and make sure the sauce doesn’t catch on the bottom of the pan, and also that it isn’t drying out. Add some water if it is catching. After simmering gently, the mixture should look thick, moist and juicy. Drain and rinse one 410g can of red kidney beans in a sieve and stir them into the chilli pot. Bring to the boil again, and gently simmer without the lid for another 10 minutes, adding a little more water if it looks too dry. Chilli Con Carne can be served with rice, baked potato or mash potato! The perfect winter warmer on a chilly November evening!

Fitness Tips
Keeping fit while travelling Seven ways to maintain a healthy routine even when you’re travelling
#4 – decide what you’ll compromise on and what you won’t
It’s the lament of many; how do I maintain my fitness and stick to my routine when I’m travelling? Airport lounges, the endless waiting around, delays, airplane food, unhealthy snacks at conferences, the plentiful pastries over breakfast can scupper our good intentions and break our routine. It doesn’t have to be that way though. There’s a lot you can do to stay active even in a tiny hotel room, and a bit of planning and preparation can help you stay on track with your nutrition. Here’s some of my top tips for staying healthy and active when you’re away from home. Here’s some of my top tips for staying healthy and active when you’re away from home.
Eating away from home inevitably requires some compromise. You’ll be offered meals you wouldn’t normally eat, rich foods you might ordinarily avoid, 3 courses where 1 would do, and potentially more alcohol. Make a list of what you’ll allow yourself to have and what you definitely won’t.
#1 – get a good workout in before you go
#6 – hack your hotel room for a good’s night’s sleep
If you have a trip coming up, step up your exercise levels the week before. A long flight can be stressful if you’re antsy and fidgety but if your muscles are happily tired, it can become an opportunity to rest and recover, enjoy a movie or two and do some reading
#2 – have a good healthy meal before you leave the house This might be the last healthy meal you have for a little while so make it count. Cook something you really enjoy, but that contains plenty of high-quality plant or animal protein combined with healthy fats and lots of vegetables.
#3 - plan your journey from front door to destination Think about the journey and what snacks you’ll need to pack. A small bag of nuts and seeds, dried fruit or fruit can be packed into small disposable containers, and will provide you with a hit of energy when needed. 16 | SE22 - November 2016
#5 – make sure you’ve got healthy options once you arrive Before you leave or failing that, when you arrive at your destination, google a health food shop or decent store in the area and buy more healthy snacks. You can take these to your meetings instead of the standard biscuits and pastries they provide
Check if the curtains are blackout and if not try and minimise the light that comes in. Turn off the TV and clock radio before you sleep. Put a towel under the door to block out the light from the hallway, and move your mobile phone where you can’t reach it. Finally, pack lavender oil to sprinkle on your pillow.
#7 – plan your exercise routine in advance Look at your schedule to see where you could fit in a run. Take the stairs instead of lifts or escalators. Stand where you can. Here’s an example of a full body workout that you can do in a small hotel room in under 30 minutes: 20 star jumps and 10 bodyweight squats to warm up. 10 press ups into 10 running squats (3-5- sets) Burpees Tabata / Squats Tabata / Plank Tabata. Can You Train Your Cat?
M
ost of us tend to view cats as untrainable creatures, utterly independent, only doing what they want when they want. As the old adage goes, ‘dogs have owners; cats have staff’. However, evidence is emerging that cats are trainable and it may well be in the cat owner’s interests to give it a go. Owners should first recognise that you cannot train a cat the way you might a dog. Cats evolved from a solitary species and consequently learn in a different way. Dogs are highly social so their need to be part of the group overrides the negative effects of social punishment and they always look for ways to please us. A cat cannot learn this way. Treat them mean, with verbal chastisement or even water sprays and they’ll just hate you and either avoid you like the plague or lash out with claws and teeth. Nonetheless, like the majority of animals, cats do learn rather well from reward. By identifying and manipulating access to things your cat enjoys and values, you can increase certain behaviours and you may even be able to eradicate behaviours you’d prefer your cat not to do. Although technically you can train many cats to walk on a lead, to ‘sit’, ‘stay’ or even toilet on top of the loo, a bigger and better purpose is to enrich your cat’s life. Key things to train might include teaching your cat to relax and settle- invaluable if you have a nervy, angry or anxious cat. Stress can be a major driver behind inappropriate feline aggression, spraying or furniture scratching. Another training plus might be getting your cat to voluntarily get into its cat carrier. For many felines the dreaded carrier signals a trip to the vet preceded by a period where their owners appear to turn into creepy hunter/predators, as they stalk their pet around the house, sometimes for hours. When thinking about unwanted behaviours owners need to understand that certain instinctive behaviours can never be eradicated. The hunting instinct is innate, you cannot stop it but you can channel it away from live furries into suitable games with special toys (see my earlier article, How to hunt with your cat). Cats that pounce on, bite or scratch
20 | SE22 - November 2016
human hands and feet may not be getting enough play. Cats can also get over excited (aroused) quite easily and are then also inclined to bite or scratch, so any training/play sessions should be kept short and curtailed when early signs of excitement arise. To train your cat to go into his cat carrier first arm yourself with rewards. For most cats high protein treats work best -tiny bits of cooked chicken or prawns. Have the carrier out and open. Toss treats into the carrier to entice your pet. Once inside simply continue to toss treats to your cat, giving a tongue click just before you toss each goodie. Your puss will begin to learn that the tongue click signals reward. If your cat gets out just stop the treats immediately. You can now begin to build up time puss spends in the carrier by prolonging the duration between each click and treat. After training sessions, put the carrier away. You will get to a point where your cat rushes to get inside the carrier each time it appears. Now start putting the carrier in different places and build the time your cat spends inside each time- eventually moving the carrier out into the car. Bear in mind that ease of training will depend on the age and personality of each cat. Shy, older cats will generally take longer to train. A respected animal trainer once told me that cats do not like to be observed practising a ‘new’ skill but prefer to ‘develop their chops’ in private. I am not sure about that, but it does seem that cat training can significantly improve the cat human bond and feline welfare. What's On - November Friday 11 – Sunday 13 November: Dulwich Literary Festival – The Way We Live Now Our festival takes its theme from the Anthony Trollope novel The Way We Live Now. With some of UK’s best-known names in politics, fiction, poetry and history on the adult programme, we also have a series of children’s events to entertain and delight. dulwichliteraryfestival.co.uk

Students walked with Mr Roots and radio producer Natalie Steed on Peckham Rye, where Blake once saw a vision of angels ‘bespangling’ a tree, which led to one of his most famous poems.
TV personality and celebrity chef Levi Roots, who cites Blake’s poem The Tyger as one of his inspirations, visited the school last month to talk to students about Blake and why his poetry still speaks so powerfully to people of all ages.
Students from Harris Girls’ Academy East Dulwich will feature in a Radio 4 programme about William Blake, to be broadcast later this month to mark the 250th anniversary of the birth of the painter, engraver, poet and visionary mystic.

“I wanted Levi to be part of the programme because he told me The Tyger had such a profound effect on him when he was younger,” said Ms Steed. “And I wanted to talk to students here about what Blake’s poems means to them and explore the different ways children see the world.”
Students touched, listened, smelled and breathed in the woods, and made sound recordings to capture their feelings, which they then used to inspire their own compositions.

Dulwich Symphony Orchestra
Saturday 26th November at 7pm
DSO November Concert
Mozart - Symphony No.35 in D, The Haffner Sibelius - Symphony No.7 Brahms - Symphony No.1 in C minor Conductor: Leigh O’Hara, Leader: Paula Tysall Dulwich Symphony Orchestra is a local, community orchestra of dedicated members whose numbers are growing from strength-to-strength as the new 2016/2017 season begins. Performed at the beautiful All Saints Church, Lovelace Road, West Dulwich, SE21, the DSO’s autumn/winter concert on Saturday 26th November, at 7pm features no less than three symphonies, presenting a master-class in this ambitious musical form. The orchestra’s conductor, Leigh O’Hara says, “This concert features three very different symphonies. The ‘Haffner’; is a short but important work in Mozart's output and one of his most joyous. Brahms is a composer that the orchestra hasn't tackled for a while and his dramatic first symphony could be
dubbed Beethoven’s tenth, an obvious influence. These two symphonies will be a fascinating contrast with Sibelius' seventh and last, which is a single movement work and one of the greatest symphonic conceptions.” For our Summer 2017 concert we are proud to announce that the DSO will be hosting a fundraising Gala concert to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the founding of St.Christopher’s Hospice by Dame Cicely Saunders. ALL ARE WELCOME: 7pm, on Saturday 26th November at All Saints Church, Lovelace Road, London, SE21 8JY, disability accessible Ticket prices: £12 adults (concessions £10), Under 16s free, includes a free interval drink - West Dulwich or Tulse Hill rail stations - FREE on street parking Tickets available on Eventbrite, ‘Dulwich Symphony Orchestra’

For our autumn concert, the Concordia Chamber Choir is proud to bring together, in exciting combination, two composers of the first rank. One is a household name, the other slightly lesser known; one from the 18th century, the other still alive in the 21st. What links Johann Sebastian Bach and Arvo Pärt is their miraculous musical interpretations of the scriptures. The first half of the concert will feature several of Pärt’s dynamic, contemporary religious pieces including a Magnificat and Nunc Dimittis; the second is taken up with Bach’s unique, magisterial Magnificat in which the choir will have the great pleasure of being accompanied by the South Circular Orchestra. We hope you’ll be able to join us for an evening of soaring beauty and deep spirituality which will confirm, once again, Concordia’s reputation as one of south London’s most prestigious choirs. The performance is at 7:30 pm on Saturday 19th November 2016 at All Saints’ Church, Lovelace Rd, SE21 8JY. Tickets for CCC’s 2016 Autumn Concert cost £12 at the door, or £11 in advance. Dulwich Hamlet FC - News
News from the Supporters’ Trust
H
eading into Mid-October Dulwich Hamlet sit just outside the the play-off places in the league. Unbeaten away from home The Hamlet have failed to find consistency at home and and despite a crowd of over 2,200 spectators attending Dulwich Hamlet's recent first ever Trade Union Day against Bognor Regis, the visitors ran out 3 -1 winners. The following game saw Dulwich secured a point at Leatherhead after coming back from 2 goals behind and if they had taken their chances in the closing stages of the game, could have been leaving the Fetcham Grove ground with all three points. On Tuesday 18 October a healthy mid-week crowd of 750, at Champion Hill, saw the team bounce back from the Bognor Regis home defeat to beat newly promoted Harlow Town 3-1. This game marked the visit of Benjamin Odeje. In 1971 Benjamin Odeje became the first black footballer to represent England, appearing in a schoolboy international against Northern Ireland and had two short spells playing for Dulwich Hamlet. Ben fondly remembered our fans during his time with us: "I really felt the warmth of the fans during my time at Dulwich, and all these years later it's great to see so many here tonight passionately supporting the team" We are always delighted when fans join up to the Trust. It’s rewarding to see fans appreciating the work we are doing for the club. We are particularly pleased that all the club’s Football Committee are now members. This is a fantastic recognition of the work that the Trust Board are putting in alongside other volunteers (such as those on said committee) to make Dulwich Hamlet a success. Our latest recruit was former Chair of the Club and now President, Jack Payne. Jack signed his form by the Mega-Container before the game last Saturday with our membership secretary (Peter Wright) on the left and Chair (Duncan Hart) on the right. You can join the Supporters Trust by visiting our website (dhst.org.uk) or at the Supporters Trust shop, the Mega-Container, on any home matchday.

Financial Matters
Our home: castle or the new cash cow?
I
n 1604, Sir Edward Coke declared “your house is your castle and fortress”. However today Sir Edward would not recognise the modern approach to our home. It has often been muted that British households have millions of pounds behind the sofa as a result of loose change. The loose change is no longer our focus. In many cases the doors of our sacred castle has been flung wide open. Five current examples of the new open castle psychology are as follows: • Supper clubs • Airbnb • TV filming • Home tuition • Hire of drive Supper clubs are pop-up home based restaurants. Many operate on a monthly basis or whatever works best for the homeowner. Some operators charge a set fee for a three, four or five course meal. Whereas, other operators ask guests to leave a donation. In recent years supper clubs have increased in popularity at least in the SE region. Dulwich is home to at least one thriving supper club. People have always rented out their spare rooms to friends and strangers alike. However, the birth of Airbnb has resulted in many homeowners with spare rooms marketing their spare room on Airbnb. Whilst there is scope for wider marketing this must be balanced with the additional fees incurred from using such a service. The recent increase in the rent a room scheme from £4,250 to £7,500, will continue to make this an attractive income source. Some homeowners have managed to generate additional income by letting their home to television companies for filming. Homeowners within desirable postcodes and/or with particular features are often able to command higher fees. Television filming crews often require access to properties from 8am. Such an early start may present a challenge to homeowners with daily ditherers. Moreover filming may span one or more days. The provision of home tuition for academic subjects and musical instruments has become a popular income source for suitably qualified homeowners.
40 | SE22 - November 2016
In addition to possessing the necessary qualifications, skillsets and aptitude for knowledge transfer, homeowners must hold a current Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) clearance. An emergent source of home income in recent years has seen homeowners hiring out their driveway for daily parking. This has become extremely popular in some neighbourhoods as local authorities have made on street parking more restrictive. Some home owners within close proximity to railway stations have found this to be a lucrative source of income. Homeowners should always exercise due care and attention when seeking to use their home to generate a source of income. All that glitters is not gold. If you are an existing tenant before seeking to harness your entrepreneurial skills, check the terms of your tenancy agreement and always seek the consent of your landlord. There is often a range of existing legislation to comply with before embarking on any home based income generating opportunity. Therefore, before leaping into that new home based venture always ensure it is legally compliant from the start. History has shown that it is often more costly to resolve the problem as a result of free entry. For example, supper clubs have to comply with a range of food and hygiene legislation. An often overlooked area is the small matter of public liability insurance. Whilst at the same time it is necessary to review and check the impact and or implications for your household insurances. Whatever prospective income generation scheme homeowners wish to pursue it is advisable to seek professional accounting, taxation and legal advice before taking the plunge. Opening the door to your house may be an invitation to more than just the opportunity to generate some additional income.

Dulwich Literary Festival 11 - 13th November Dulwich Books of West Dulwich presents

SE22 Councillors
Dulwich Hospital Site I ’m very excited to report that after 25 years of procrastination the future of Dulwich Hospital has finally been decided. We like to think that our use of the Right to Challenge, the first ever, challenging the appalling waste of land while most of the site was left vacant and under utilized helped crystallize things. This challenge crucially involved the Cabinet Officer granting two-thirds of the site for a new secondary school and making the NHS commit to when the land would be free for the new secondary school which meant they had to finalise their own plans for a health centre. Early October two planning applications were granted permission to proceed. The first is a new Dulwich Health Centre that will be able to treat 118 patients at any one time, provide 4,500m2 of floor space for a wide variety of medical services. The second application was for the permanent site of the Charter East Dulwich Secondary school that we’ve campaign for since 2013 when the council told us we were nuts wanting a new secondary school in East Dulwich. The school once fully completed in 2022 will have pupil entrances on East Dulwich Grove x2 and one on Jarvis Road. So an improvement on what was originally sought. The gym will also have some extra work to make it less over bearing for the residents of St.Barnabas Close. But the biggest unresolved issue the planning committee didn’t address is parking. Neither scheme will have enough parking for the teachers, health staff, patients or visitors on site. They jointly funded a parking stress study that reported 100 free parking spaces within 500m of the site on local residential streets. On this basis they’ve assumed for the Health Centre that only 8% of patients will need car parking on site. Of the 183 school staff only 30 will have car parking. I sincerely hope the planners and applicants are right and we’re totally wrong in worrying about this. One concession is agreement to our request that construction worker parking be provided on site during the building works wherever possible. We’ve seen building works at JAGS and Alleyns result in parking stress on neighbouring residents streets and it should be perfectly possible with the space at the hospital to avoid this here.

Crime Prevention With Christmas coming we’re working hard with our local Police to try and prevent crime. We’ve held one event supporting our local Police by handing our anti burglary property marking kits explaining how to use them. If you’d like a kit please get in touch with me and we’ll get one to you ASAP. They are free and when deployed reduce your chance of being burgled by 85%. We’ve also approved some more motorbike anchors to secure such bikes onto and we’re organising bicycle marking kits. If you’d like either – and again they’re free – please get in touch so we can get them to you.
Highway Renewals We’ve agreed to use our devolved highway renewal funding to: Rodwell Road – finish fixing the highway. Sadly we don’t have enough cash to fix the pavements this year as well. Landcroft Road – at last we can get the middle section of the road renewed. Landells Road – replace the pavements not renewed last year. All these works should take place before March 2017 and you will be given a couple of weeks notice by the councils contractors.
Lordship Lane – Townley Road We think this junction and area of Lordship Lane needs to be upgraded to make it safer. We think part of this could also see parking both sides of Lordship Lane returned. Putting this parking back would narrow the road which typically slows traffic. The Pelican crossing would also have a much shorter distance for people to cross. The current road layout is designed for speed which is bizarre now we’re a 20mph borough. What do you think?

Garden Talk
Euphorbia euphoria
I
've grown to appreciate euphorbias more and more. Their slightly exotic-looking foliage adds strong evergreen structure to a garden, but it’s their brilliant lime green flowers in spring and early summer that really wow and look amazing with purples and blues. There are many varieties to choose from, whether for height or ground cover, sun or shade. Here’s my pick of the best.
I The biggies E. mellifera. This is perfect if you want a bold architectural plant in your garden – it reaches up to 2m. The attractive bright green evergreen leaves are complemented in spring by rusty orange, honey-scented flowers (mellifera is Latin for honey- bearing). Try it with large leaved plants for an exotic look or bold pinks, oranges or reds. It likes full sun or partial shade.
E. x pasteurii This is a good choice if you want something with the virtues of mellifera – exotic long leaves, (though slightly darker green) as well as orangey flowers in early summer, but in a more compact form.
E. characias wulfenii You see this euphorbia a lot, and it’s popular for a reason. It’s has a useful upright shape, with tall stems of grey green leaves providing year interest that look great with silvers and purples. In early spring it has fabulous billowing lime green flowers that perfectly complement purple plants such as Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ or alliums. Sun loving and drought tolerant once established it’s perfect for a Mediterranean-style garden. E. characias ‘Black Pearl’ with dark black eyes in the middle of yellow flower heads is a more unusual option, or for a more silvery colour-scheme try E. characias 'Silver Swam' with a white leaf margins and mainly white flowers.
sunny border and will tolerate part shade. It looks amazing with blues, such as Iris ‘Jane Phillips’ or Salvia nemerosa ‘Caradonna’.
E. ceratocarpa This is another euphorbia to add zingy acid green to the garden throughout the summer – March to July.
E. x martini What’s striking about this euphorbia are the redeyed flowers from March until late June, which can be picked out with other dark red/pink early flowering perennials such as aquilegia.
III Shade lovers E. amygdaloides var. robbiae Fab for brightening up a shady spot, this low growing (60cm) euphorbia is one of the earliest to flower, with dark glossy green leaves and fresh lime green flower that look great with ferns or early flowering geraniums such as ‘Brookside’. It’s useful ground cover for a tricky spot, but can be a bit invasive, so keep an eye on it.
E. amygdaloides ‘Purpurea’ This variety also has dark glossy leaves and bright green flowers in early spring but with crimson stems. It’s also a low growing shade lover.
A word of warning The stems have a milky sap that can be a skin irritant, so wear gloves and long sleeves. Wash off immediately if you do get some on your hands. Euphorbias do have a tendency to spread or self seed - some more than others, but they’re easy enough to weed. All part of the plant are highly toxic so avoid if you have pets and be aware if you have small children.
II Lower growing E. palustris With its fresh green foliage and mass of bright green flowers throughout the summer months, this rounded compact euphorbia is great for a 46 | SE22 - November 2016

The Last Word – Karo Paszkowska What one thing would you change? I'd love to see more cocktail bars to bring some variety. It would be great to have few more nice and classy places to have business meetings as well.
The one thing you couldn’t do without? The parks! Hands down!
Do you know your neighbours? Yes, as a matter of fact we invite each other to go out for a drink and have dinners on a regular basis. I love my neighbours. It's brilliant, make me feel at home.
The most famous person you’ve met? Myself! Just joking, I haven't met any famous person yet.
Do you belong to any groups? We have a local Mastermind Group that has been running for a few months.
Describe your perfect weekend
Music can heal the soul of others and my goal is to open the door of healing to as many souls in the music industry as possible and to make them truly SHINE! I am a Transformational NLP Life Coach, mentor, amateur singer and philanthropist. I help singers and entertainers who want to regain trust in who they are in their private and in their on stage life. I love working with highly committed artists with great sense of humor, who want to grow, learn and who are TRULY ready to transform their life!
How long have you lived in the area? I moved to Dulwich in 2014 and when it was time to move house, I chose to stay in the area.
What has changed most during that time? When I first moved in the area Franco Manca was still under construction. Also East Dulwich Picturehouse and the recording studio (near the Palmeraton) were here either!!!
What do you most value about the area? I love the fact that it's a place where lots of artist choose to live. One of my favourite things in Dulwich is proximity to the city and the fact that it is such a green area. 48 | SE22 - November 2016
My perfect weekend would start with a fitness boot camp in the park with friends followed by meditation, followed by a cup of peppermint tea at Blue Mountain and some street food at the North Cross Road. Saturday afternoons are reserved for my singers! I am life coach for singers and I normally have few regular coaching sessions every weekend. Sunday morning is reserved for a yoga class at Yoga Rise in Peckham and the rest of the day is my day :)
When I want to relax... I sing (Whirl Studios, a bit further up from Denmark Hill), I watch a movie, I catch up with friends and stay up until 4am talking.
Best bargain you’ve ever landed.. I bought Versace vest in one of the Second hand shops and I only paid £70!
If money was no object.. I would open my music label and buy my own island. I would invest in creative businesses and help as many people I can by creating life changing events and trainings educating, bringing growth and inspiration to all the world.
My secret ambition.. To open Music House and Record Label with difference. www.trustkoaching.com
