The Best Evergreen Climbers

E

vergreen climbers are one of the most useful plants in city gardens. Covering fences in green foliage, they blur boundaries and create a lush backdrop for planting throughout the year. There are lots to choose from, all offering something different: foliage, flowers, berries, colour and scent. Here are my favourites.

Luscious leaves Trachelospermum jasminoides With neat glossy foliage and sweet smelling flowers, this tops the list. It copes with shade but in sun will reward you with a mass of tiny white summer flowers that smell of the Mediterranean. I also like the ‘Variegatum’ variety with white splashed leaves, or for something different try the yellow flowered ‘Star of Toscana’. Trachelospermum takes a while to establish but will eventually coat your fence in dense foliage, which just needs a light prune after flowering to keep in check.

shorten branches after flowering to expose the berries. Happy in sun or shade.

Fab flowers Lonicera japonica ‘Halliana’

Evergreen, self-clinging and shade tolerant, this is a useful new find of mine. It has long glossy green leaves and sprays of white flowers in late summer, early autumn. It’s slow growing but is a stunning sight once established. Happy in sun or shade in fertile soil. Shorten stems after flowering.

There’s nothing quite like the sweet smell of honeysuckle and there are various evergreen varieties. This one has white fragrant flowers in spring turning yellow into summer. For more dramatic colour try Lonicera henryi with dark green leaves and purplish-red summer flowers, or L.henryi ‘Copper Beauty’ has bronze leaves and beautifully contrasting yellow flowers. Great for an English country garden feel, honkeysuckles are vigorous and can get woody so cut back by up to two thirds in spring. They like sun or part-shade.

Hydrangea seemannii

Passiflora caerulea

Pileostegia viburnoides

This is another useful self-clinging evergreen with handsome mid green leaves and large greenish cream flower heads from early summer. It will climb high, so useful if you need to cover a tall shady or north- facing wall. Keep moist while establishing.

Brilliant berries Pyracantha ‘Orange Glow’ Although strictly speaking a shrub, pyracantha can be trained to cover a wall and is often supplied on a frame ready-trained. It’s thorny and needs careful pruning to keep flat against the fence but the stunning autumn berries, dark evergreen leaves and lovely white May blossom are worth the effort. Also available in yellow ‘Saphyr Jaune’ or red ‘Saphyr Rouge’. Tie in shoots to extend the framework and 12 | SE22 - November 2017 Janine Winlaw

A seriously exotic climber with evergreen leaves and large blue highly ornate flowers from July to September, followed by orange fruit from late autumn. P. caerulea ‘Constance Eliot’ is a lovely white form. Great for a cottage garden or tropical look, it’s another vigorous climber that needs cutting back after flowering to keep in shape. Prefers sun but will tolerate shade.

Akebia quinata This is a very pretty climber often known as chocolate vine probably because of its clusters of spicy-smelling maroon-chocolate flowers in March to May. They contrast well with the lovely bright semievergreen foliage. Likes full sun but tolerates shade. Prune back after flowering.

Butternut Squash & Onion Bhajis Ingredients for the Madras Spice Mix Makes 14-16 Bhajis • 2 tablespoons coriander seeds • 1 tablespoon each of cumin seeds, fenugreek seeds, yellow mustard seeds & ground turmeric • 5 whole dried Kashmir chillies • 6 whole green cardamom pods • 1 teaspoon medium curry powder

Ingredients for the Pumpkin Bhajis • 1 large egg • 25ml milk • 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, + extra for deep-frying • 100g (prepared weight) butternut, peeled, deseeded & coarsely grated • 50g (peeled) onion, finely sliced • 1 teaspoon Madras Spice Mix • 50g Garam flour • Sea salt & freshly cracked black pepper • 2 Spring Onions – chopped • Teaspoon Chopped Coriander

Method First, prepare the madras spice mix. Heat a nonstick frying pan over a medium heat, add the mixed seeds, turmeric, dried chillies and cardamom pods and dry-toast for 1-2 minutes or until the spices are lightly toasted and their aroma wafts up from the pan, shaking the pan regularly to ensure that they do not catch and burn. Let the toasted spices cool and then grind them all together to a fine powder using a spice grinder. Add the curry powder and mix well. Keep the ground toasted spice mix in an airtight container or jar in a cool, dry cupboard for up to 1 month. The leftover spice mix can be used for homemade Madras curries and soups. Prepare the Butternut bhajis mixture. Whisk the egg, milk and 1-teaspoon oil together in a mixing bowl. Add the squash, onion, spice mix, coriander, spring onions and salt and pepper and mix lightly to combine, then add the flour and stir to mix. Heat some vegetable oil in an electric deep fat frying or in a deep frying pan to a temperature of 1600C (or until a small piece of bread browns within 20 seconds in the hot oil). Once the oil is hot 14 | SE22 - November Email Suzanne2017 with

enough, place teaspoonful’s of the bhajis mixture into the hot oil and deep-fry for 4-6 minutes or until cooked, crisp and golden brown. You will need to deep-fry the bhajis in two or three batches. Using a slotted spoon, remove and drain the cooked bhajis on kitchen paper, season with salt, then keep warm while you cook the remainder. Serve the hot or warm bhajis as a starter with mango chutney and minted yoghurt, or serve as a fun accompaniment with pumpkin soup. As a snack, they are great for a drinks party – simply pile them into a bowl and serve warm. Enjoy!

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer

Energise your day....... ...by changing how you start it

A

few times a week I’ll walk into work, taking the quieter roads and as much green space as I can. This is a wonderful way to start the day, and I find I have a better day when it begins peacefully like this rather than rushed or sitting in traffic. My commute is 50 minutes on foot, and by the time I arrive in the office, I’m feeling really energised. This is due to a few things, and in sharing them, I’m hoping you’ll review how you start your day and see if you can set yourself up for a great day with a few tweaks to your morning routine.

Make exercise part of your commute If you can’t walk all the way to work, consider getting on the train a stop later or earlier, or even getting up early enough to have a quick walk round the park on your way to the station. A study found that a brisk 10-minute walk increases energy, plus the effect lasts for up to 2 hours! In addition, if the 10-minute walk is maintained daily for 3 weeks, overall energy and mood is lifted.

Get natural daylight as soon as possible As soon as you wake, throw open the blinds or curtains and get natural light into the room and onto the retinas. This will trigger your circadian rhythm and if you concentrate, you should feel a shot of energy. Try it! Having a 10-minute or more dose of natural light at the start of the day (in conjunction with your commute) is great for energy levels, and may even provide you with some vitamin D3 depending on the time of year. It will also make being indoors for much of the rest of the day more bearable if you’re an office worker.

Consider buying some headphones I’ve talked before about intersections, and what 16 | SE22 - November 2017 Leanne

I’m about to say is a perfect example of this: I love listening to podcasts so I intersect my daily commute with content by plugging into iTunes as I walk. Alternatively, you might intersect your commute with music, which in itself can be highly energising. Headphones are a great way to fill your head with something motivating, inspiring or calming – all whilst you’re on the move.

Start the day with compound movements Move every part of your body – perform compound movements that mobilise all the joints such as squatting, getting up and down from the floor and climbing. This can be done as part of your commute and your work day: getting up from your chair is a squat; climbing stairs is a compound movement, and many of us have to stand on the train – consider this is an excellent balancing exercise!

Think about ancestral movement Our ancestors were on the move all day – from the moment they woke to nightfall they would be on the move whether that was foraging, cleaning, washing, hunting or defending themselves against a threat. Our movement levels are a stark contrast to this, but we need to get back to more daily life movement. Stand often, walk a lot, and sit infrequently. Consider standing meetings and walking meetings, and observe how much more productive they are.

Use a foam roller The foam roller is one of my favourite pieces of kit and definitely the best fitness purchase you can make for under £15. It’s a cylindrical-shaped roller that you use to roll your body over (your body weight provides the pressure) and it’s a bit like having a massage. I start my day with this sometimes and it’s very energising. It can be painful if your muscles are tight, but persevere. You’ll get an endorphin kick as well as a surge of fresh blood to that area, innervating the muscles.

Dulwich Literary Festival

Dulwich Literary Festival 2017 Ali Smith, Alan Hollinghurst, Sam Leith, Henry Blofeld and many others to appear on the main weekend, 10-12 November. Additional events to take place throughout November, including a spooky All Saints Day special with Andrew Michael Hurley, a pop-up at West Norwood Feast and an evening in conversation with Robert Peston.

D

ulwich Literary Festival returns this November with a striking line-up of speakers, including celebrated writer Alan Hollinghurst, Man Booker shortlisted Ali Smith, ITV Political Editor Robert Peston, renowned sports journalist Henry Blofeld, The Spectator’s Literary Editor Sam Leith and photographer and social media sensation Mihaela Noroc. Presented by award-winning independent bookshop Dulwich Books, events will be hosted at various local venues including Dulwich College, Dulwich Picture Gallery and the bookshop itself. The 2017 programme includes something for everyone, with talks for children, walks for adults, ‘how-to’ workshops and thought-provoking discussions covering everything from sport and literature, to faith and global affairs. Commenting on the festival programme, Susie Nicklin, owner of Dulwich Books said: “We are delighted once again to bring together some of today’s most celebrated authors, leading thinkers and local writers in Dulwich, to celebrate the best that words have to offer. In times of uncertainty we need to join together in celebrating the things that matter in our communities, whether feasting, worship, education or culture, and books and writers are the perfect way to link them. From Man Booker Prize-winning writers to a creative writing competition for all the young writers of Southwark, there are opportunities for all to participate and engage.” Stand out events taking place across the main weekend include a unique evening with Ali

Smith, who will celebrate the work of author and illustrator Tove Jansson at Dulwich Picture Gallery, a free exhibition of photos by Mihaela Noroc, who became a social media sensation with her images of women taken around the world, and a talk with Alan Hollinghurst, who will discuss his much anticipated new novel, The Sparsholt Affair, with the BBC’s Razia Iqbal. Inspiring debate at the festival will be Political Editor Robert Peston, who will draw insights from his career in journalism to address the problems of our time and how we might put them right. Catherine Nixey will discuss the controversial findings of her new book The Darkening Age, which suggests early Christianity might be more violent, ruthless and intolerant than first thought. And, as new protest movements rock the political mainstream, Alexei Sayle, Courttia Newland and Francesca Rhydderch will look back at dissidents who made history, discussing their contributions to a new anthology of stories re-imagining key moments of British protest. As well as engaging ideas and debate, the festival will offer a number of sessions and

H

alloween costumes have been put away and pumpkins have been recycled into soup, risottos, and pies, or just left outside to rot in the garden. The kids have returned to school for the autumn term and local shop windows are already starting to look festive. However, there is still much to do in and around Dulwich before we dive fizz-first into the silly season! The annual family fireworks display at Dulwich Sports Club on Saturday 4th November is guaranteed to light up your dark November nights. This year promises more food and beverage stalls than ever before including a bonfire, mulled wine, real ale, BBQ, and kids bar. Arrive early to get a good spot – and that’s just for parking! Later this same night, Plosive launches a brand new comedy night at The MCT at Alleyn’s featuring big-name headliners and handpicked favourites from the alternative circuit. Village Books have a number of inspiring events lined up again this month. On Sunday 5th, Newsnight presenter Evan Davis shares his thoughts on ‘Why we have reached Peak Bullshit and what we can do about it’; and bestselling author, Phillip Pullman, talks writing and storytelling on 7th. Another highlight of the month is the annual Dulwich Literary Festival at Dulwich College, which is running from 10-12 November this year and features Alan Hollinghurst, Ali Smith, Simon Jenkins and Alexei Sayle as well as a fun children’s programme. Visit dulwichliteraryfestival.co.uk for the full programme of events.

Tickets are £25 with all proceeds to Link Age Southwark. Also raising money for Link Age Southwark - on 23rd November - is caterer extraordinaire, Suzanne James, who will be hosting a supper at her Barry Road premises in aid of this wonderful charity. The end of the month will bring with it our first dollop of Christmas cheer when The Charter School in Herne Hill opens its gates for their annual Christmas Fair on Thursday 23rd. Meanwhile, Love West Dulwich, St. Augustine’s Church, Forest Hill Methodist Church, The Friends of Dulwich College and Havelock Walk are all holding Christmas Fairs on the weekend of Saturday 25th – Sunday 26th. As the nights turn colder, your thoughts may turn to winter fashion and so the Jaadu Autumn/ Winter Fashion Show at Café Rouge in West Dulwich could be right up your catwalk. Redevelopment Plans

M

any readers may be aware of proposals to redevelop Champion Hill including a new football stadium and residential development. The existing stadium struggles to cope with the large crowds we now see at matches and quite simply it would require a huge amount of work to get it in a position which would help sustain the Club financially and offer improved facilities for supporters and the local community. The Supporters’ Trust supports the redevelopment and believes this is currently the best way to secure a sustainable future for the Club in East Dulwich. As part of the development the Club would be transferred to its fans free of any debts and with a secure lease. This is one of our key objectives and ensures that the Club is put into the hands of the people who care about it most – the fans. We’re getting closer to knowing the outcome of the planning application with an appeal hearing set to take place in in December. If you’re not a member of the Supporters’ Trust yet then please consider joining. You can join online or pick up a form from the DHFC shop near the main entrance on home match days. It costs just £10 a year for adults and £5 for concessions. Visit our website at: http://dhst.org.uk/ and follow us on Twitter @dhstorg Saturday 7 October was a big day for non league clubs as this was the date for this years nonleague day (NLD) and, having played away on last season NLD, Dulwich hosted Needham Market at Champion Hill in front of 2,417 spectators. NLD first started in 2010 and has now grown to become an annual part of the football calendar and gives clubs like Dulwich the opportunity to promote themsleves to new fans and the local community. The game was desinated as a 'Pay-What-YouLike' match with all profits from the game being donated to charity. The two main beneficiaries for the afternoon where the club's official 2017/18 charity partner 'The Copleston Centre' and the Brixton-based mental health support group charity 'Lambeth & Southwark MIND'. A staggering £9,100 was raised on the day thanks to the amazing generosity of all those in attendance.

Financial Matters with David Frederick

Budget 2017 - What is in store for 2018?

W

ednesday 22nd November 2017 marks a historical landmark for the country. It is the date of our first autumn budget replacing its historic spring predecessor. With the onset of our first budget, taxpayers may want to look through a crystal ball to try and see inside the Chancellor’s red box at our main taxes. The current climate for the budget is one of austerity and uncertainty in many quarters and the mood has been captured by the Joseph Rowntree Foundation: “Incomes are not keeping up with prices. The living standards of ordinary working families are being eroded. The summer 2015 Budget froze most benefits for working-age people for four years, from 2016/17 to 2019/20. This included benefits to top up low earnings and out-of work benefits, and follows a period when rises were capped at 1%.” The Chancellor has got little wriggle room if he is to remain in the strait jacket handed down from his predecessor who promised us "a low-welfare, low-tax economy." However, judging by his first budget last March and his subsequent back sliding, his actions will be under the microscope. This will especially be the case from the nations’ army of self-employed tax payers. Income taxpayers should expect an increase in the personal tax threshold, if the government honours the strait jacket pledge to raise tax free income to £12,000 by 2020 and raise the starting point for higher rate tax to £50,000. On this basis taxpayers can expect their personal tax allowance for 2018-19 to rise to at least £12,000 from the current £11,500. A more benevolent offer may be £12,100 but based upon historic behaviour this seems an outside bet. Similarly, the starting level for higher rate income tax is expected to rise from £45,000 to £47,000. However a shift to £47,500 would accelerate our arrival at the target £50,000 starting point for higher rate tax. This move may be tempered by the Chancellor with some positive action being channelled into the tax credit system and at lower income groups. The registration threshold of that old chestnut of VAT will no doubt experience an increase. The

44 | SE22 David - November 2017 Frederick

expected increase is from £85,000 to £87,000, if the Chancellor maintains the momentum of previous years. There is unlikely to be any announcements on corporation tax rate changes as Budget 2015 and 2016 has already set the sliding scale until March 2021. However, the Chancellor may be bold to show that the UK is open for business post Brexit and trim corporation tax by 1% to 18% from April 2019. However, the likelihood of such a bold step is most remote and corporation tax will remain at 19% until 31st March 2020. Our two taxes on capital, inheritance Tax (IHT) and capital gains tax (CGT) are unlikely to offer any cheer for taxpayers. CGT the tax on the disposal of assets is expected to remain unchanged. However, the annual allowance is likely to experience a modest increase not exceeding £200, to £11,500 in 2018-19. Similarly, no change in IHT is expected given the introduction of the residence nil rate band (RNRB) in April. The RNRB allows policy makers to seduce taxpayers with the perception of a ‘£1m IHT threshold’, until it is put under the microscope. However, the Chancellor may choose to lift the 8 years austerity of the IHT threshold remaining at £325,000. Another likely autumn budget change is a shake-up in stamp duty. There has even been radical thoughts and suggestions of switching stamp duty from home buyers to sellers. Taxes on the usual suspects of alcohol and cigarettes, are unlikely to remain unchanged, to ensure no sanctuary for any taxpayer.

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair

Why is my cat weeing around the house?

C

at wee around the home has to be one of the most maddening issues a pet owner faces, not least because it stinks, but also because it can present a seemingly intractable issue that crops up for no apparent reason. Obviously the stakes are higher if you own an indoor cat, but even outdoor cats can start urinating in the home. In such a short article it is impossible to cover all the bases, but here is a brief guide signposting potential reasons and solutions. Adopt the mind-set of a detective and systematically exclude each possibility and solution before moving on to the next. If in doubt, speak to your vet and a feline behaviourist. Spraying or puddles. Identifying which your cat is doing can help point to the root cause. Some cats do both. Spray is generally found on vertical surfaces. Close monitoring of your cat’s behaviour may also reveal what is going on. Paw kneading and treading, vibrating an upright tail while backing up to vertical surfaces, usually occur just before spraying. Neuter status. Cats have a highly developed sense of smell and use scent to signal to other cats. Intact cats are more likely to spray to mark territory and signal mating status. My advice, unless you are a breeder neuter your cat. Illness. Get a vet check. A range of medical conditions, being in pain and feeling unwell, can all cause a cat to start urinating in new places. Exclude, UTI’s, cystitis, kidney stones, diabetes and age associated problems. Stress. Any changes to the home, either inside or outside, may trigger urination or spraying as a nonspecific sign of social disruption or stress. Cats are highly territorial and even seemingly insignificant changes to their environment or routine can be triggers. New cats whether in the home or outside can be another. Mild anti-anxiety agents, like Feliway, may help calm your cat. If simple and obvious adjustments do not help, consider seeking expert advice on altering the indoor or outdoor environment to one that better suits your pet. Litter Box. Any cat can develop or have an existing dislike of its litter box. The box may be

46 | SE22 - November 2017

in the wrong location, perhaps next to a noisy household appliance, or it is in a cold or damp area or they dislike the surface next to the litter box. Cats spook easily and it is instinctive to want to be safe while in the vulnerable position of urinating. Many cats hate enclosed litter boxes (they are smelly and cats are fastidious) and prefer large litter trays. Others will not share litter trays with other cats or close to another cat’s toileting area. The type and depth of litter can also be a major issue and sometimes changing the substrate helps. Old litter trays may have deep scratches that hold elimination smells. Litter trays must be cleaned out daily and thoroughly washed weekly. Like us, cats do not want to use toilets that are dirty and smell. Remember, used litter holds odours. Experiment with tray locations or even buying a new tray. Try a range of different litters and always have one more tray than there are cats. Cleaning. Thorough cleaning of wherever the cat has formerly sprayed or urinated is vital. It is also important to daily remove any residual elimination odours the cat may detect. Multiple washes followed up with an enzymatic cleaner are a must for each and every accident. Getting the house completely odour- free to start with is a necessary, albeit onerous undertaking. As discussed in an earlier article, outdoor cats also need a clean patch of raked soil in their garden or locale. Praise. We should never punish the cat for inappropriate elimination but some experts do suggest praising the cat for eliminating in the right place. However, cats are private creatures and it is probably less stressful to simply give them space to do what is natural.

Step Inside Dulwich with Ems Penniston

Entertaining at Home

W

hen I think of my dining room it brings to mind many happy memories of family get-togethers, celebrations, Christmas festivities, dinner parties with close friends, lively conversation, lots of laughter, mingled with lavish amounts of food and copious bottles of alcohol. In other words... Good times! Yet for many days of the year the dining area can be the most underused and abandoned place in the home. With today’s hectic lifestyle many meals are snatched occasions, with members of the family eating at separate times, often consuming different meals, taken on the run, or augmented with orderedin take-aways, consumed whilst relaxing or catching up on favourite TV programmes. The days when the whole family would sit around a table together for a weekday evening meal have long since vanished. So, if and when time permits, and the opportunity occurs to gather together family and friends to share a meal, it is important to create the right social ambiance, to appreciate the occasion and take the opportunity to express oneself and impress others. I believe there are some basic rules you can follow to create the perfect entertainment space. If you think about how any good restaurateur takes the time to create a memorable experience for their diners, I think we can learn a few important lessons from them that can be adapted to your home entertaining. No matter what style of dining area you have – a kitchen diner or distinct dining room, the important thing is to create an inviting, warm and welcoming ambiance, somewhere you immediately feel relaxed and happy to spend time in. Cold, bland, sterile or intimidating restaurants don’t stay in business for long. This can be achieved using colour, mood lighting and a coordinated design scheme. The use of lighting is of major importance. I suggest a mix of lighting options: occasional lamps, ceiling lights or hidden defused lighting. Adding a dimmer switch also allows you to subtly change the mood, silently indicating different moods to trigger response from guests.Candles are also a must; they create intimacy, which encourages people to chat.

48 | SE22 -Impressions November 2017 London

I always try to create some visually impactful feature within the room: artworks, photographs, table decorations or objet d’art, something that is unique, a little quirky or is memorable, and which attracts attention and becomes a talking point. It is not necessary to spend a fortune; in fact having miscellaneous pieces, used in combination can add extra character and uniqueness. Simplicity of style can be visually effective so don’t worry if all you own is a motley collection of items - used properly they can be made to look amazing. Beautiful table décor is vital in creating that wow factor. This can be themed or adapted to suit various occasions. To add that touch of opulence, a stunning floral / foliage arrangement can create effect. Spend time planning the table setting, handwritten, personalized seating cards allow you to retain control over who sits where, yet make guests feel that bit more special. As autumn approaches, and the hazy days of summer barbeques draw to a close, creating that perfect indoor entertainment area will be repaid with everlasting memories of good times. Cheers!

Education News from Alleyn’s

Positive Partnerships

A

ndy Skinnard, Senior Deputy Head of Alleyn’s School, tells us how to nurture a positive partnership with school for the best interests of our child. "As in all schools, safeguarding the wellbeing of our pupils is our first priority at Alleyn’s. Being well and flourishing enables pupils to have the confidence to explore the world around them, to feel comfortable in their skin, and to test ideas and activities without a limiting fear of failure. We emphasise the importance of working alongside parents and in recent parent evenings we explored how best to form a positive partnership between home and school, working in the best interests of the child." Here are our tips: Don’t set fixed goals from the start. The journey through school is as important as any final results. If specific ambitions are a family’s main measure of success, then a distinct possibility of seemingly irredeemable failure arises. Most importantly, the enjoyment of the journey, the fact that it is okay to fail, suffer setbacks or to discover that some things are harder than others, will get lost if we only concentrate on results. Don’t believe everything you hear about the school – and the school won’t believe everything it hears about you! Children can perceive things in a way that the adult in charge doesn’t recognise. Teachers make mistakes, of course, and the way to

raise concerns is one that is open-minded before finding a resolution. Stand behind your child in support of the journey – not in front, and in partnership with the school. This was brought to us in a recent pastoral evening from an expert speaker. As they get older, try to let children find their own way and only intervene when you think support is needed rather than trying to clear the path ahead of them. Keep an eye on social media – it can cause huge anxiety and pain. Discuss use of social media with children and consider not allowing them to take devices to bed, to give them a rest from being online, and to get a good night’s sleep. Be mindful of your communication with the school. Ask your school with whom the best person to speak will be when you have a concern. Schools have large numbers of children, be mindful when problems arise that the school must apply the routines and rules fairly to everyone. Be prepared to be open with your school and your child. Schools find it easier to deal with problems when they can speak to both you and your child freely. The critical point is good communication. Find out whom to speak to, when, and always do so in a spirit of partnership, where the goal is supporting your children realistically and consistently, as much for the love of the journey as for final outcomes.

SE22 Councillors with James Barber

New Dulwich Health Centre

F

or 25 years there has been talk of replacing the Dulwich Hospital with something else. The NHS Property people are great at talking. So it was great to finally see a scheme given planning permission 2 February this year (16/AP/2747). To ensure the scheme was good for the area it came with 37 planning conditions of which 14 have to be approved by Southwark Council before works get started. The other aspect is until the new Health Centre is completed current services can’t be transferred so the space they occupy on the Dulwich Hospital can’t be released for The Charter School East Dulwich (TCSED). Taking a good look I’ve been unable to find any of those critical conditions being met by the NHS. This project appears stalled. Best case, the architects are about to deluge council officers with paperwork. Worst case the NHS have changed their minds. As you can imagine we’re on the case chasing this up and will keep you posted.

Remaining Suburban

A new scheme (17/AP/2681) replacing 54 Ashbourne Grove with three new houses is under consideration by the councils planning department. Until 2011, such schemes would have been decided by local councillors and I doubt it would have been approved. It is much denser than our suburban classification in East Dulwich allows for. The developer is quoting several schemes approved since 2011 of schemes approved by council officers across East Dulwich of such high density. As a councillor I can, working with colleagues, call this in. But in recent years planning committees have been centralized, are mostly made up of councillors from Camberwell and Peckham and have little sympathy for keeping our area suburban – they repeatedly pass schemes that Dulwich councillors would never have agreed. It means the character of the area is being eroded with time. Is keeping the area lower density important to you? If it is then the Dulwich Society, the civic society covering our patch, are looking for local East Dulwich residents to help 62 | SE22 - November 2017 | 07900 227366

them defend our corner of Southwark. Whether you’re interested in trees, green issues, planning, traffic they need your help shaping East Dulwich for the better. As a councillor I need their help.

Goose Green Screen

The parents of Goose Green Primary School have come up with a great way to fight air pollution – a 90m long green wall to screen the school from traffic and air pollution coming from Grove Vale. Over the last couple of months I’ve been trying to help and support them. The Dulwich Society have been super generous and are donating £3,000 towards making it happen. If you’d like to donate then please get in touch with the PTA: goosegreenpta@gmail.com or send a cheque to Friends of Goose Green School or donate online www.justgiving.com/goosegreen-primary I’m also hopeful to persuade other local schools near busy main roads to copy this great idea – Harris Primary Academy east Dulwich, St. Anthony’s Catholic primary School, The Charter School East Dulwich.

Thank you

Many thanks for all the kind invitations to Big Lunches and other street parties over the summer. Talk about lucky with the weather. Sadly I wasn’t physically been able to attend them all but I did try! If you’ve held a street party this summer then please do consider holding some further Play Street events where typically you close your road for a couple of hours each month for you and your neighbours kids to play safely on your street – this never felt a luxury when I was a kid. It’s a great way to get to know your neighbours a little more and to help children get a little more fun exercise. Please do get in touch for details how to make one happen on your street. I’d also like to say thank you to all the kind thoughts and messages I received after my father died unexpectedly during August. It did completely knock me for six and I’m only just about back to normal. So if I missed a message from you please get in touch again – I’ve nearly caught up with my emails.

The Last Word – with Linda Drake The one thing you couldn’t do without? The parish church of St Barnabas and Christ’s Chapel, two beautiful buildings which bring local Christians together to hear the gospel and serve the local community.

Do you know your neighbours? My neighbours are amazing; we have a real oldfashioned support network, lots of joint socials, and rallying round to offer help when needed.

The most famous person you’ve met? The tallest man in the world, who I saw when attending a conference in Kuala Lumpur; I thought he was a street artist on stilts, until I saw his story in the local paper.

Where are you to be found on Saturday? Dulwich library, the most wonderful resource for books, music, IT facilities and numerous groups, classes and events. We must be almost unique in maintaining library services in the current climate of cutbacks. I am a Dulwich resident, and have lived in Southwark for nearly 40 years. I love the variety and vibrancy of this a young, multi cultural area. I work locally as a practice nurse, I job adore, and can recommend to anyone. My husband and younger son both work for the NHS, whilst my older son is a vicar...

What brought you here? We came 33 years ago for the open spaces and good schools for our young family

What has changed most during that time? The changes to Lordship Lane, which is now the go-to SE london road for independent restaurants, bars, cinema and shops.

What do you most value about the area? My job as a general practice nurse, specialising in diabetes. I can cycle to work, and together with the local community and businesses we all can encourage people to get tested for diabetes (see diabetes.org.uk ‘preventing diabetes’). I have worked at the same practice for over 30 years, which either shows how much I love my job, or a real lack of imagination!

What one thing would you change? The amplified noise from the late night events at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, the recent extensions to their their arrangements, which spoils the quiet, environment. 64 | SE22 - November 2017

open air following licensing peaceful

The best kept secret... The skilled colorist, Mary at Balayage hair salon in Lordship Lane; of course, I wouldn’t know myself , but ‘my friend’ assures me how natural her highlights are!

What is your favourite shop? All the local independent shops, but best of all is Bartley’s flower shop in Dulwich village, their flowers are so fresh they seem to last forever.

And the last thing you bought there? I try to get something, even a stem or two, every week, it really lifts my spirits to have fresh flowers in the house. Last week it was some vibrant, copper coloured leaves, which look striking with a rust colour chrysanthemum, a real autumnal arrangement.

My secret ambition.. To persuade the Mayor of London to set a challenge to Londoners to ‘Loose 10 Million Pounds’, as in weight, not money! This would be funded by a whole programme of local and borough based initiatives, with various incentives and competitions to support increased activity and healthy eating. It would transform the health and lives of the population.

If money was no object.. I’d invest massively in public health initiatives in Southwark, to address the health inequalities in the areas of obesity, smoking and mental health problems of our children and young people.
