he biggest mistake I made this summer was booking our holiday in the last 2-weeks of the school break. By the time our departure date finally came around we were all knackered and already starting to think ahead to the new school year. My next mistake was flying home the day before our son was due to start his final year of primary school (sobs) and I went back to work. It’s only now we’ve been home for a few weeks that I feel a bit more on top of my inbox and ready to get on with the overwhelming task of selecting a secondary school for my Year 6 ‘baby’. I still have a huge pile of laundry that I never seem to make a dent in, but this seems to always be the case no matter when we go away! There were also some really exciting things to look forward to on my return! After a brief hiatus in August, my Film Club resumed with a visit to ED Picturehouse to see the new Tarantino movie ‘Once Upon a Time in Hollywood’ starring Brad Pitt and Leonardo DiCaprio. I’m not quite sure what was going on in the film, but both Brad and Leo put on excellent performances and I could re-watch Brad’s scene on the roof over and over and over again… (and again) Join Village Books for an evening of chat and food demonstration with chef and bestselling author Ching-He Huang (1 October). Get Into Dahlias Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
D
ahlias are back in fashion in a big way, sales are up and there are thousands of posts of these dramatic beauties on Instagram. Once only grown on the allotments or in a dahlia bed for flower shows and flower arranging, they’re now being used mingled amongst perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs in borders. The darker, richer colours look great in tropical schemes, working well with lush large-leaved plants. Dahlias come in an enormous array of colours from deep velvety purples to pale peach and corals, as well as hot and pastel pinks, whites, creams, yellows and reds (just no blue). There is also a huge range of forms from spiky cactus and anemones, simple single-flowers and stars, pom poms and massive dinner plate varieties. They can be very tall or for smaller gardens, dwarf varieties are ideal. In terms of care, tubers are traditionally dug up in autumn, dried off and stored over winter to be planted out in spring. But you can leave them in the ground, mulched thickly, especially in London if your soil doesn’t get too wet. You’ll also need to protect them from slugs. Encourage side shoots by pinching out the top and feed every three weeks with tomato fertiliser. If you keep deadheading them, they’ll give you fantastic colourful blooms right through autumn when everything else is fading. Some of my favourites:
Dahlia ‘Walzing Matilda’ This is a pretty fiery coral dahlia with relaxed slightly twisted petals, which contrast beautifully with its dark purple brown stems and foliage. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses such as golden deschampsia or miscanthus. D. ‘Labyrinth’ is another peachy pink dahlia, but more lavish and romantic.
Dahlia ‘Eveline’ A lovely white variety with large blousy creamywhite flowers with pink petal tips. For a more delicate white dahlia try ‘Honka Fragile’ with delicate, striking star-shaped petals also edged with pink – it can keep flowering until November if it’s deadheaded. 12 | SE22 - October 2019

Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’ A large cactus variety with dark burgundy flowers this’s great for adding almost black accents in a border. The double D. ‘Arabian Night’ also has dark burgundy velvety flowers and works well with golden grasses and pinks.
Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’ An iconic single with crimson flowers, a yellow eye and dark purple foliage. Others in the Bishop Series include D. ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ with deep pink flowers, a golden eye and dark foliage. As well a simplicity that’s easy to incorporate into planting schemes, singles are also great for attracting pollinators.
Dahlia ‘Café au Lait Royal’ The vast dinner plate flowers of this are an ediblelooking milky coffee colour with hints of dusky pink – gorgeous! Another whopper is D. ‘Otto’s Thrill’ , glamorous and spectacular with luminous pink fully double blooms. It looks great amongst verbena bonariensis.
Dahlia 'Zundert Mystery Fox' A neat ball-shaped orange dahlia – fab as a cut flower with looser- looking dahlias. D. ‘Wizard of Oz’ is a super-pink pom pom that looks lovely toned down with cool blues and whites.

Roasted Chestnut & Mushroom Pate Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk
C
hestnuts are now in season, don’t wait for December, they are good enough to eat now. They are a great source of vitamin C as well as vitamins B1, B2, and B6 and folic acid. Choose firm, shiny chestnuts to create this delicious recipe. This recipe makes a big bowl of pate, which will keep in the fridge for 3 days.
Ingredients • • • • • • • • • • • • •
1 small onion, finely chopped 2 garlic cloves, finely chopped 1 medium parsnip, peeled & diced 2 tbsps olive oil 250g cooked chestnuts, chopped 250g chestnut mushrooms, sliced 150g shitake or wild mushrooms, sliced 25g butter (optional) 2 tbsps brandy 1 tbsp lemon juice handful of flat parsley, chopped freshly ground black pepper sea salt
Method Pre-heat the oven to 200C/Gas Mark6. Roast the parsnip in 1 tablespoon of olive oil for 20 minutes, until soft and beginning to colour. In a large frying pan, fry the onion in 1 tablespoon of olive oil, until soft, but not browned. Add the garlic and fry for a minute. Add the shitake or wild mushrooms and fry for another minute, then add the chestnut mushrooms and fry until the mushrooms are all an even dark colour. Stir in the cooked parsnips, chestnuts, butter, brandy and lemon juice. Gently fry for 5 minutes, stirring a couple of times. Leave to cool and then puree in a food processor to a chunky consistency. Season to taste and add the parsley just before serving. Serve with rye bread, wholegrain or melba toast. 14 | SE22 - October 2019

his month’s blog has actually been inspired by a podcast I did recently with Sarah Williams of Tough Girl Challenges – a cracking podcast, which you can listen to here: Adventure, Freedom, Autonomy And Inspiration With Sarah Williams Of The Tough Girl Podcast It really got me thinking – Sarah talked about one of the reasons she left her job in wealth management was because one of the biggest things she valued around wellbeing was autonomy, and I completely agree. I will quite often think, while I’m looking at my laptop, “You know what, I’m kind of done for the day, even though it’s 2:30pm in the afternoon.” In my previous life, I would have had to sit there till 5:00pm or 5:30pm tapping away, looking busy or forcing myself to get on with it. But one of the things I can do now is just say, “You know what, I’m going to go home. I’m going to sit in the sun, and I’ll get up early and finish this the next day, or over the weekend.”
Having autonomy is such a crucial part of wellbeing. I know for many of you who work in corporate jobs where you can’t necessarily get up and leave in the middle of the day, that could be trickier. But what you can do is try and reclaim some time for yourself during the day or the week or even the month. Do something that you really love or connect with, something you used to enjoy – it’s what we call heartfulness.
Heartfulness for me is two things. Firstly, a sense of contribution - doing something for somebody else. I volunteer for a charity called Diversity Role Models, and we go into schools and talk about the effects of homophobic, biophobic and transphobic bullying. And that's very, very rewarding work to do - I love that. I do it for nothing, I give my time, I give it willingly and freely. The other aspect of heartfulness is getting reconnected to something you used to love. For many of you as busy professionals, the convergent pressures of work and home would 16 | SE22 - October 2019
have squeezed out any bandwidth you may have to do things you used to love, like painting, like walking, like listen to music, or going to an exercise class. So, don’t feel trapped in your job, or trapped in the humdrum nature of daily life. Seize back some time for yourself and do something that’s all about you. Regaining some autonomy will help you really notice the difference in terms of your wellbeing. It doesn’t have to be a long time; it can just be five minutes initially. Five minutes is better than nothing, or even half an hour depending on what your lifestyle (whether you have a family for example) can allow and how pushy you want to be about this. Autonomy is a crucial part of wellbeing. We quite often talk about sleep, mental health, energy, body composition, digestion, fitness – the Six Signals, all of which are very important for health, but having some autonomy, feeling like you’re in control of your life, at least some of the time, is also massively important for our physical, our spiritual, our emotional, and of course, our mental health.

E
very year pet owners of dogs, cats and other small animals will be forced to seek help because their animal has been traumatised by exposure to firework noise. Use of the word trauma may seem excessive but in my work I see animals that suffer debilitating noise phobia, sometimes after only one exposure to very loud fireworks or thunder noise. The saddest part is that fear of loud noises can generalise very quickly to anything that vaguely reminds the animal of the first scary event. These pets go on to require medication and extensive behaviour treatment. The animals suffer greatly and some harm themselves or run away in efforts to escape the noise. The key issue is predictability. Forethought and widespread communication by licensed organisers of fireworks events enables pet owners to prepare well in advance- the Blue Cross advises owners of young animals and older animals with a known noise phobia to seek veterinary advice 6-12 weeks before firework season begins. The greatest problem is the impromptu back garden fireworks show and, of course, irresponsible sale of fireworks. Neighbours should think carefully and find a way to alert the wider community if they are contemplating mounting a fireworks display outside the usual fireworks season. Only a proportion of pets are genetically noise sensitive and many will never show the same panic response to noise in the way afflicted animals do. However, where young animals are concerned it is best to prepare well and assume the worst. It is not always clear which young animals go on to develop noise sensitivity. Be warned, older animals can experience changes in hearing and sight and for the first time develop a panic response to a range of loud noises. Here is a quick and basic guide to preparing for fireworks season for any pet owner. and 7am other than by licensed organisations; it is illegal for anyone under 18 to own or handle fireworks; unlicensed retailers can only sell fireworks from 15 October to 10 November and 26 to 31 December; it is an offence to cause unnecessary suffering to any domestic or captive animal. • VET - visit your vet now and ensure you have their recommended calming products or medication to hand. ‘Thunder- shirts’ can help some dogs relax. • MICROCHIP - ensure cats and dogs are microchipped so they can be identified if they bolt and escape during a fireworks episode. • BEHAVIOURIST - if you know your animal has a major problem with noise seek qualified help 6 months or more before fireworks season. Seek guidance on noise desensitisation. • DENS - provide dens and hiding places inside the home, with blankets and similar to block out noise. • PET CURFEW - walk your dog in daylight. Keep all animals inside before dusk. Lock cat and dog flaps. • SOUNDPROOFING THE HOME - before fireworks events shut curtains and blinds, turn houselights on, have the TV or radio on. • STAY CALM - if your pet looks terrified you can cuddle or stroke them if they come to you but don’t pursue them to comfort them and don’t over soothe them as this can communicate to the animal that you are also scared. Allow your pet to hide, pace around or vocalise if they need to. Try to normalise the situation. If your pet is only slightly concerned you can try distraction, play a favourite game, look happy! Do praise your pet if they are calm. • EXTREME REACTIONS - if your pet has a first time extreme reaction - panting, shaking, drooling, howling, trying to escape, you need to see your vet and seek expert help as soon as possible. It is likely your pet will need medication.

he nights are drawing in, the clocks will change at the end of the month. Before long we will start to think about a Christmas. And what a glorious summer we had this year. After a slow start temperature records were broken for both July and August. We are now experiencing hotter summers and warmer and drier winters. Scientists agree that climate change is to blame for this erratic weather. All across the world we are seeing extremes of weather. A recent example was the terrible hurricane Dorian that devastated the Bahamas Islands. Glaciers are melting at an alarming rate. If nothing is done to halt this climate crisis, sea levels will rise swamping many low-lying counties. We here in Southwark can do our bit to halt this climate change. Southwark Council is playing its part by encouraging local residents to use their cars less and walk more and use public transport. The Council is introducing more
cycle lanes and quiet ways. Also, the Council is encouraging drivers not to let their engines idle when stationary, especially outside schools. Goose Green school and the Harris Primary school are trialing street closures twice a day as a way of encouraging parents and guardians to walk or cycle to school. We can all play a part in saving the planet. One way is to reject single use plastic. Look out for retailers that sell loose items that are not entombed in plastic. Also try and find outlets that will refill your water bottles. I am hoping to have a water fountain installed either in North Cross Road or Lordship Lane. This is dependant on funding and a good location. The Councils Cleaner, Greener, Safer fund is open for applications. The closing date is the 7th October. If you have an idea for funding please go to the Councils website for details, but you will have to hurry.

According to finder.com: • There are 22.6 million homes in the UK • 6 million homes in the UK don’t have any form of home insurance • The average home has contents worth in excess of £35,000 • The average premium (for both building and contents cover) costs £309 per year • That’s less than £6 per week to cover your building and its contents In summary, over 25% of homes, avoid an average spend of 85p per day on home contents insurance. Mike and Alison were heading down the same road a few years ago. It had been several months after they had spent thousands of pounds on a beautiful wedding and moved into their new home. A home, which was adorned with their array of wedding gifts and the efforts of their years of toil; Mike as a small business owner and Alison as a city executive. Alison opened a letter from their insurance company one evening, to learn that their home insurance had been cancelled. Mike, confessed things were tight and he had decided to cut out the effective £7 per week home contents insurance. Alison was not impressed nor did she buy into Mike’s brand of economics and false prudency. The next day, she reinstated the contents insurance without informing Mike (naughty!). In her words, “I had valuable items in our house, even if Mike didn’t” A few weeks later, whilst at work, Alison received a distressed telephone call from Mike, informing her that they had suffered a burglary and he had cancelled their contents insurance. On receiving the call, Alison played along with Mike’s distress, to help him reflect, until she returned home. Mike’s behaviour, is becoming the new norm for cost cutters or the army of ‘I/we will 36 | SE22 - October 2019

Theft accounts for 16% of claims on home insurance policies, according to finder.com. Theft is ranked third behind, fire (17%) and water damage (31%). Households need to decide at 85p per day can they get a better return on this investment for their valuables. The following five steps may help households avoid over insurance: 1) Do not guess or deliberately overstate the value of an item for insurance purposes; 2) Use the Association of British Insurers (ABI) calculator; 3) Don’t value contents in first year and never again; 4) Value your contents annually, document and save it; 5) Check that your items are not covered under multiple policies; such as under home insurance and the mobile phone and/or small electricals insurance cover with some bank accounts. Households must decide, to suffer the slings and arrows of no contents insurance or to take out adequate insurance cover, against the risks of flood, fire and theft.

Avoid just buying a new door leaf. Two reasons - first, old properties will probably have twisted the old frame, so a square leaf will not be a snug fit. Wednesday 23 October: The Origins of Us: Latest Developments in the Field of Human Evolution 11.30am. B abble Talks are daytime TED-style talks for parents, not about parenting. For parents and carers with babies under 1 year old. Our understanding of human evolution continues to develop at an astonishing rate. This talk will focus on the origin of our species (Homo sapiens) around 300 thousand years ago, and how we interacted with our closest human ancestors such as the Neanderthals and the Denisovans. The talk will give the latest knowledge from the human fossil, the archaeological and the palaeogenetic records and show that the movement of our species across the globe, and our biological and cultural encounters with other human species have helped to define who we are in the modern world. t the time of wrtiing Dulwich Hamlet are due to play in this years FA Cup with opponents, Bognor Regis Town, being a familiar team to The Hamlet. Both clubs have been regular opponents in the Isthmian Premier league for a number of years before their promotion, at our expense, in the play-off final 2017. With Dulwich winning promotion the following year and Bognor Regis only managing one season in the Conference South, this is the first fixture between the two sides since that Isthmian play-off final in 2017. Every year we dream of a good run in the FA Cup. For the club this would bring in some welcome revenue, with the winners of this game alone securing ÂŁ6,750 in prize money. The last time Dulwich reached the First Round Proper was in 1998. Could this be our year? Unfortunately, for Dulwich Hamlet Women's the dream of a FA Cup is over after being defeated in extra time away to Aylesford Ladies FC. Crowds at their home games are continuing to grow with just under 300 spectators turning up to their last home game. The Supporters' Trust shop is now back up to stock with this seasons replica shirts with sizes from 3-6 months up to 4 X, including the extremely popular White Women's team away shop. Also proving very popular this season are our range of trucker and bucket caps. Merchandise can be purchased from the Mega-container shop at all home match days or online at www.dhfcshop. co.uk. Not only does a percentage of the profits go towards the day to day running of the football club but as been invested in nto purchasing shares in Dulwich Hamlet. Over the past season the Trust as invested ÂŁ58,000 in the football club leading to us owning a significant stake, which is held on behalf of our members and the wider community. As well as raising money via our merchadise sales, a large part of our investment is raised via our 100 Club monthly draw.
