Welcome

This magazine went to print just after the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II. It has certainly been a time for reflection and sadness. I went along to Green Park to see all the flowers and the many amazing messages from all around the world; I found it very moving. But as we know, life goes on and magazines don’t get printed without effort!

I40.hope you enjoy the magazine this month, please feel free to let me know if you do. Until next time. Angela Angela Burgess Head of All Things Community SE Magazines/Around Dulwich

Where the Wildflowers Grow: My Botanical Journey Through Britain and Ireland is a passionate call to arms to save our remaining flora before it’s lost. Leif’s story is an urgent one that echoes the growing environmental zeitgeist of our age. Along the way, Leif highlights the joy and positivity that can be found through understanding nature and why it is so desperately important to protect our wildflowers. Join Leif for a fascinating talk about his botanising journey around Britain and Ireland and about the joy of engaging with nature, the importance of plants for our climate, and celebrating our unbelievable botanical diversity. Where the Wildflowers Grow - Leif Bersweden

7:30pm – 8:30pm. Village Books and Alleyn’s School Enterprises are delighted to welcome bookshop favourite Elly Griffiths to Dulwich to celebrate the publication of her new thriller Bleeding Heart Yard. DS Cassie Fitzgerald has a secret – but it’s one she’s deleted from her memory. In the 1990s when she was at school, she and her friends killed a fellow pupil. Thirty years later, Cassie is happily married and loves her job as a police officer.

Thursday 6 October:

Thursday 6 October:

7pm – 8pm. Over the course of 2021 Leif Bersweden cycled around Britain and Ireland, tracking down the unique plants that grow there and investigating both their history and the threats that face them. His journey took him from the Cornish coast to the pine forests of Scotland, from handling carnivorous plants on the Norfolk Broads to the streets of London, proving that nature can be found in the most unexpected places. Wildflowers are everywhere we go, even in the heart of cities. Botanical diversity is a barometer for the state of our ecosystems and historically plants have been used in all aspects of our lives.

One day her husband persuades her to go to a school reunion and another ex-pupil, Garfield Rice, is found dead, supposedly from a drug overdose. As Garfield was an eminent MP and the investigation is high profile, it is headed by Cassie’s new boss, DI Harbinder Kaur. The trouble is, Cassie cannot shake the feeling that one of her old friends has killed again. Is Cassie right, or was Garfield murdered by one of his political cronies? It is in Cassie’s interest to skew the investigation so that it looks like the latter and she seems to be succeeding. Until someone else is killed… Elly Griffiths is the author of the bestselling series featuring Dr Ruth Galloway. The most recent, The Locked Room, was a Sunday Times hardback number one. The series has won the CWA Dagger in the Library and has been shortlisted five times for the Theakston’s Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year. Lower School at Alleyn’s, Alleyn’s School, Townley Road, Dulwich, SE22 8SU. Tickets: www.mct.alleyns.org.uk/

He is a member of the Club and very experienced, so we know to expect a fun time.

6 October: We have a treat in store tonight as Sibby will be calling. He comes a long way, and we are very grateful. Each caller has a different style and different favourite dances they like to call so we never get bored. And Sibby is very entertaining.

Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’

Get Into Dahlias

An iconic single with crimson flowers, a yellow eye and dark purple foliage. Others in the Bishop Series include D. ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ with deep pink flowers, a golden eye and dark foliage. As well a simplicity that’s easy to incorporate into planting schemes, singles are also great for attracting pollinators.

This is a pretty fiery coral dahlia with relaxed slightly twisted petals, which contrast beautifully with its dark purple brown stems and foliage. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses such as golden deschampsia or miscanthus. D. ‘Labyrinth’ is another peachy pink dahlia, but more lavish and romantic.

Dahlia 'Zundert Mystery Fox'

Dahlia ‘Eveline’

of care, tubers are traditionally dug up in autumn, dried off and stored over winter to be planted out in spring. But you can leave them in the ground, mulched thickly, especially in London if your soil doesn’t get too wet. You’ll also need to protect them from slugs. Encourage side shoots by pinching out the top and feed every three weeks with tomato fertiliser. If you keep deadheading them, they’ll give you fantastic colourful blooms right through autumn when everything else is fading. Some of my favourites:

A neat ball-shaped orange dahlia – fab as a cut flower with looser- looking dahlias. D. ‘Wizard of Oz’ is a super-pink pom pom that looks lovely toned down with cool blues and whites.

ahlias are back in fashion in a big way, sales are up and there are thousands of posts of these dramatic beauties on Instagram. Once only grown on the allotments or in a dahlia bed for flower shows and flower arranging, they’re now being used mingled amongst perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs in borders. The darker, richer colours look great in tropical schemes, working well with lush large-leaved plants.

Dahlias come in an enormous array of colours from deep velvety purples to pale peach and corals, as well as hot and pastel pinks, whites, creams, yellows and reds (just no blue). There is also a huge range of forms from spiky cactus and anemones, simple single-flowers and stars, pom poms and massive dinner plate varieties. They can be very tall or for smaller gardens, dwarf varieties are ideal.Interms

A lovely white variety with large blousy creamywhite flowers with pink petal tips. For a more delicate white dahlia try ‘Honka Fragile’ with delicate, striking star-shaped petals also edged with pink – it can keep flowering until November if it’s deadheaded.

Dahlia ‘Walzing Matilda’

A large cactus variety with dark burgundy flowers this’s great for adding almost black accents in a border. The double D. ‘Arabian Night’ also has dark burgundy velvety flowers and works well with golden grasses and pinks.

Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’

Dahlia ‘Café au Lait Royal’

D

The vast dinner plate flowers of this are an ediblelooking milky coffee colour with hints of dusky pink – gorgeous! Another whopper is D. ‘Otto’s Thrill’ , glamorous and spectacular with luminous pink fully double blooms. It looks great amongst verbena bonariensis.

The Health Benefits of 10-Minutes of Movement

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer |

So all you need to do in theory is a brisk 10 minutes of movement, perhaps a walk or

people still think that they have to spend at least an hour a day or so in the gym for health. And while it is true that, more is better when it comes to movement, you can get a lot of health benefits from just 10 minutes of movement a day. This month’ tip is all about movement and specifically the health benefits of 10-minutes of exercise.

So that’s this week’s tip, but please do consider little pockets of movement. If you can get that 10-minutes of movement done and enjoy that increased mood and that increased energy. That’s it from me, stay healthy all the best for now.

Now I understand there’s nothing revolutionary about talking about movement for health and wellbeing. We know we need to do it. You’re probably struggling to find time to do as much exercise and movement as you’d like to do, but you don’t necessarily need to do a lot.

In previous posts, I’ve talked a lot about minimal effective dose and I have also talked a lot about movement snacking, but let me share with you a study, which was conducted across a broad range of participants. What the study found was when participants did a 10-minute brisk walk a day, their overall mood and energy increased for up to two hours afterwards.Sothat’sa

I’d be looking to bookend my day with 10-minutes of movement. Maybe at the beginning and the end of the day, or you use it as a wedge. So you use that 10-minutes of movement to literally drive a wedge between perhaps your morning and your lunch break, or in between two pieces of work. Or just as an opportunity to stop and reflect and move on to the next thing. Rather than going bang, bang, bang, bang into all the different things that you’re doing. Health’s a long game, making small incremental but consistent change can have a huge overall impact.

that upswing in mood and energy.Personally,

What Impact Can as Little as 10-Minutes of Brisk Walking Have?

What Are the Longer-Term Health Benefits of 10-Minutes of Movement?

Now the same study also found that when participants did a 10-minute brisk walk every day for three weeks or longer, the overall increase in mood and energy lasted all day. In addition, it improves bone health, burns calories, decreases depression, reduces stress and physical aches and pains. It also increases lung capacity and improves your gait and balance.

Yoga encourages us to accept ourselves as we are. This a really positive thought process to bring to teens during this time of change. The class encourages teens to notice and appreciate what their body can do and draw their attention to sensations in their physical body and away from worries and racing thoughts.

Managing Stress & Emotions

How the techniques of yoga can increase young people’s capacity to manage stress and anxiety and improve physical health

ADVERTORIAL

There is a neurological reason why most of us can relate to at least one of the aforementioned experiences. During our teenage years, our prefrontal cortex in our brain is developing the ability to rationalise our emotions and make considered decisions. Before and during its development we are primarily driven by our emotional brain, meaning that during our teenage years we feel emotions very strongly but can struggle to rationalise, process, and articulate them. So how can yoga help….?

Yoga is a powerful tool for increasing physical strength and is accessible to all teens whether you are ‘sporty’ or not. The classes are non-competitive so offer a welcoming space.

We draw attention to how anxieties can manifest in the physical body – hunched shoulders, racing heart, sweaty palms – and consider how we can accept, rationalise, and manage these emotions to help them feel more manageable. The poses we adopt stimulate either stress (physically challenging requiring focus) or rest (meditative to

you ever taken a moment to think back to how you experienced your teenage years? Maybe it was filled with angst about finding your place in the world, establishing a group of friends. Perhaps an exciting time where you discovered independence, first love and other passions. Or a complete mishmash of deeply felt emotions.

and parents were able to network with influential education professionals such as the Cabinet Member for Children, Young People and Education, Cllr Jasmine Ali of Southwark Council.

This forum launched their first event in July 2022 focusing on ways parents can get involved with their local community and schools in order to tackle the challenges they face. The Deputy Mayor Cllr Michael Situ opened this event by emphasising the importance of community involvement as a means to tackle challenges such as mental health and youth empowerment in the black community. Guest speaker Nat Stevens spoke about his summer football camp, held in Kennington Park that equips young people with skills that can be used for a common good and head teacher Reema Reld gave insight on the importance of parents taken on roles as parent and school governors.

On November 26th 2022 (date to be confirmed) the Southwark Black Parents Forum will be coming to Dulwich. For it’s future events this forum hoped to inform parents from African and Caribbean background on how to take on the roles of parent and school governors which will positively affect the ways in which the education system can tackle the struggles that black students face with the education system. This forum aims to increase participation in community engagement events and create meaningful partnerships with voluntary and community sector organisations withinSouthwarkSouthwark.Black

The creation of this group was birth out of a need, to meet challenges that parents from these backgrounds face, which are hardly acknowledged or address. This group has created a platform for families to share information on ways to contribute to the achievements of their children and give direct access to professionals in industries that directly affect the development of their children’s growth. This has allowed for parents from African and Caribbean background to participate in their children’s current/future success.

Parents were left with an optimistic view on actions that can be taken to support their children in schools and the local community and were assured that through this forum, they were given a space where their concerns were heard and actioned through participation within their local community.Inthe

Parents Forum organiser, Cllr Natasha Ennin of the Newington ward within Southwark, encourages parents from African and Caribbean background to be involved with the forum because offers a space for black parents to share their experiences and network with influential professionals in the local community and education industry. For more information on the forum follow them on Twitter or contact them at: southwarkblackparentsforum@gmail.com

The Southwark black parents’ forum provides information, support and guidance to African and Caribbean parents in Southwark, in order to highlight the important ways parents, guardians and carers can have active involvement in their children’s education and schooling.

When Gavin arrived at The Hamlet back in 2009, the club was on its uppers, bimbling bovinely around step 4 of the non-league pyramid, appreciated only by a couple of hundred dishevelled fans with the odd scruffy cur. 13 years and two promotions later, the Hamlet are playing sexy football in front of crowds over ten times that size while selling lashings of fancy Greek street food and artisan booze. In significant part, this (not the food and booze) is down to the drive and desire of Gavin and the bonds he has built with everyone associated with the club. But as Chaucer said “at the laste, as every thing hath ende.” The ende came on the back of a poor run of early season form, which has left the Sons of Edgar Kail supine in the gutter of the Conference

ome small business owners faced with the challenge of small business growth seem happy to apply a strategy designed to stunt or even kill the growth of their business. What is really enlightening is that when questioned these business owners, would never dream of treating any child or human being in this same manner. However, they offer their small business no such respect or protection.

These small business owners are quite happy to champion a case for not allowing their business to enjoy a turnover beyond £85,000. What is magical about £85,000? This is the threshold for mandatory registration of VAT.

S

32 SE22 - October 2022

Whilst it may not seem that difficult, a recent discussion with a small business owner revealed that their former accountant, had advised them to register for VAT although their sales were not vatable. Whilst this is the complete opposite of stunting small business growth, it further demonstrates the misunderstanding of the fundamentals of VAT. Such misunderstanding, may partially explain why many small business owners are encouraged to stunt their business growth because of the administrative burden of VAT. The administrative responsibilities of a VAT registered small business are threefold:

• maintaining accurate and reliable business records;

InTax.short, any business that provides vatable supplies must register for VAT once their turnover of vatable supplies over a rolling 12 months approaches or reaches £85,000. However,

• since 1st April 2022 maintain business records digitally.

Financial Matters

Small Business Growth

Small business owner often cite the burden of VAT as a wholly justifiable explanation for their behaviour to stunt or in some cases stifle their small business. This it never reaches maturity. One may reflect and ask, have these small business owners ever attempted parenthood as either a single or joint parent? For the alleged administrative burden of VAT pales into insignificance when benchmarked against parenthood. Alas each to their own. This label of administrative burden is an interesting and perplexing

The maintenance of accurate, reliable and digital records are fundamental requirements for effective small (or large) business management. Let us not forget, the rights to business success comes with some responsibilities. Even, the great fanfare and noise surrounding the burden of MTD (Making Tax Digital) for VAT has not materialised with any greater or adverse burden on the well run small business. Quite the contrary, digital record keeping affords small business owners and their accountants a better opportunity to understand the development and progression of the small business.

Furthermore, explanation.what is most concerning to learn from small business owners, is that their argument has been endorsed by accountants. Really! The idea of stunting or let’s be real, stifling business growth because of the VAT burden is justifiable? Just looking around, one can only reflect and ask what would our local and national economy have looked like if all small business owners of yesteryear had adopted this desire to stifle any positive signs of business growth? Nevertheless, this requires a deep dive into the operations of this VAT administrative burden. Let’s start by assigning VAT its full name, Value Added

a business may register for VAT if their vatable sales is below this £85,000 threshold. The £85,000 threshold is only applicable to vatable supplies. This is fundamentally important because small business owners and their accountants need to be aware whether the goods and/or services being supplied are vatable.

Today, any small business contemplating or at this VAT crossroads may want to reflect upon the poem, ‘For want of a nail’. Perhaps the 2022 revision may be rewritten, “for the misunderstanding of VAT a real business was lost.” A small business often takes the journey of the road least trodden and attempts to stunt its growth should be taken with due care and attention.

he new baby is home and you are probably too elated or too tired to think beyond the bundle of joy now at the centre of your world. However, spare a thought for your dog who up until now thought he was centre of the universe. Getting a handle on the pooch perspective around baby arrival, will not only help you juggle the weight of new, daily demands, but will also ease the transition for your pet. Okay, so dogs don’t feel jealousy in the way humans do, but they are aware of losing something they value. Most dogs, selectively developed to be highly social, covet our attention above all. The usurped hound may react in surprising ways; barking, howling or sudden bouts of ‘naughtiness’. Changes can include outright disobedience; stealing forbidden items, and some dogs slump into a deep depression. No point getting angry, because as far as ‘bowser’ is concerned any attention is better than none.Last time we looked at preparation; introducing your dog to the new baby’s smell and baby equipment, as well as sharpening up basic obedience. If you managed these, the following steps will be easier. Your dog is learning about your baby and new things can be scary. Dogs may nip, or worse, out of fear. They may be triggered by noises to view the baby as a toy or prey.

1) While you hold the baby, practise obedience commands with your dog. ‘Sit’, ‘down’, ‘touch’, whatever your dog knows. Give your dog rewards for compliance. This is a great, mental workout for pooch and a fabulous association with the new baby.

3) While holding or rocking the baby, have a small bag of kibble beside you. Toss out a kibble and wait until your dog eats it and comes back to you. Now wait for him to look at you and then throw out another bit. Repeat this, varying the duration of eye contact. Ask for ‘sits’ and ‘downs’ too. Obviously you cannot have your dog with you all the time. It is imperative he learns to switch off and relax in “safe” areas. I met Jimmy (not his real name) a couple of months ago. Quietly spoken, and a little shy, he wants to learn to read. He’s in his late thirties and he wants to be able to read to his children and help them with their learning.

It’s been a real community effort too. We’ve recruited volunteer coaches in SE21, SE22 and SE23 and we’ve got a fabulous Ambassador, the novelist and Dulwich resident Monica Ali. When we met for coffee recently she agreed to lend her support to Read Easy Southwark because words were an incredibly important part of her life and getting help learning to read “shouldn’t stop just because you’re no longer a child.” She’s right, it’s never too late toIflearn.you’ve read this, please help us help people who can’t read it. Adults who might not be able to read signs in supermarkets or on the back of a medicine bottle or able to read their children’s teachers notes. Adults who just want another chance to catch up, to rebuild their self esteem, be better able to support their children’s learning or to get a better paid job. If you want to find out more about Read Easy Southwark, sponsor a reader or help us raise the funds to pay for the reading resources we use to help readers learn, then please contact me at:

Shelagh and “Jimmy” (Coach and Reader)

When I joined Read Easy Southwark I thought I could use some of my Early Years teaching experience to help coach a new reader like Jimmy, but I quickly discovered, there are just so many Jimmys. So many adults living in Southwark who struggle to read or can’t read at all. I was persuaded to take on more than just coaching. I agreed to become the coordinator for the group which means I get to meet people like Jimmy, who wants to learn to read, and people like Shelagh, who has a bit of time to spare and wants to help other adults learn to read. It’s been a privilege to support people as they take their first steps towards learning a skill so many of us take for granted and a privilege too, to help build the relationship between the readers and the coaches and provide the support they need for as long as it takes.

here are an estimated 2.4 million adults in England alone who cannot read at all or struggle to read simple words. Many people don’t tell anyone and they try to hide it. The really good news is that it’s never too late to learn. Read Easy Southwark is a new, local charity set up to help adults who can’t read, change their story.

A Healthy Brain

Education News from Alleyn's | www.alleyns.org.uk

Last Words

Losing themselves in a story can help your child relax. Reading can be a space for escapism. Just 30 minutes of reading can lower blood pressure and stress as effectively as yoga according to a 2009 study conducted by Sussex University researchers.

While it is tempting to recommend a classic or a book that appears on a ‘must read’ list, this can be daunting for a child who is out of the reading habit. Graphic novels, manga or the latest thrilling page turner can be better and don’t forget biographies or fact books. Subjects that interest pupils are a good gateway to getting back to reading.

L earning to read and progressing from picture to chapter books is a big achievement in primary school but sometimes, reading for pleasure risks being relegated when a child starts secondary school. A new school, new subjects, friends, more homework or more sport can all take precedence, but continuing to read is important.

Communication Skills

Exercising the brain with activities such as reading, will keep your child’s mind engaged and improve their memory, with knock-on effects for the rest of their schooling.

When a child returns a book and tells me how much they loved it and we then talk about it, is one of the best things about my job. As Alan Bennett said: “The best moments in reading are when you come across something - a thought, a feeling, a way of looking at things -which you had thought special and peculiar to you. Now here it is, set down by someone else, a person you have never met, someone who is even long dead. And it’s as if a hand has come out and taken yours.”

Children who read regularly develop large vocabularies. This will influence how well your child will write, speak and perform in tests and interviews.

Encouraging Reading in Secondary School

The Right Books

A good book can help your child understand other lives and experiences which may be very different to their own. Developing this empathy through books will help your child build and maintain social relationships, not just in school but throughout their lives.

Stress Reduction

Esther O’Donnell, Librarian at Alleyn’s, discusses the importance of children reading for pleasure in secondary school and how you can encourage your child to maintain the habit.

The Classics Can Wait

Encourage your child to be a regular visitor to their school library and talk to their school librarian! Many children are put off reading because they don’t like the characters or the genre, or the language is too challenging. Librarians knows and love books and will help your child find the ‘right’

If money was no object..

The sheer number of pubs! Although we couldn’t actually frequent any of them the first 6 months!

The one thing you couldn’t do without? Predictably it’s my bike – but only in London!

What one thing would you change?

Describe your perfect weekend

What has changed most during that time?

What brought you here?

I’m a member of Alpha netball club - we sometimes train at Charter School and play matches on Saturdays.

Coffee or tea? Where?

Do you belong to any groups?

I currently do an office job part time and teach yoga part time - if money was no object, I would probably stop the office job and do loads more yoga trainings and teach yoga full time. One day!!

Lord of the bows. It’s the second in the Conqueror series by Conn Igguldon. It’s a historical fiction book about the life of Ghenghis Khan. The first one in the series, Wolves of the Plains, was brilliant – definitely worth a read, and there is loads of them in the series so they’ll keep you going for ages.

The fact that we are allowed out!

Do you know your neighbours?

My name is Rosie Wadham and I am a local yoga teacher. I teach at Studio 57 behind Vits and Kicks on North Cross Road.

Yes – we have lovely neighbors. Michael on one side – another bicycle enthusiast and a bird lover – he made us a beautiful calendar this year with photos of birds he had taken himself. Sarah on the other side – who always says nice things about our flowers out front and invites us round for prosecco – can’t ask for more than that!

Walks and wild swims in the wilderness and then pub grub with friends - maybe throw a vineyard tour in there – would be good to have some dancing if possible!

How long have you lived in the area?

Coffee at Oru Space – I’m usually a flat white drinker but the cappuccinos at Oru are incredible – they do something clever with the chocolate!

I moved here with my boyfriend Callum in November 2020.

More bike hangars.
