Forest Hill Society news Lewisham Council is conducting a review of the Forest Hill Conservation Area. The Council has been reviewing two conservation areas each year. This year it’s our turn and, as Liz Hannaford of the Forest Hill Society writes, the conservation area may be extended Forest Hill has a large conservation area covering the centre of Forest Hill and it includes both residential and commercial areas. The boundary runs along Wood Vale, the triangle park and Horniman Gardens; then to the north: Westwood Park, Manor Mount and part of Devonshire Road; and to the south: London Road, part of Taymount Rise and part of Dartmouth Road up to the Bird in Hand pub; then along the railway line to join up to Devonshire Road. The review will include a boundary review, proposals for buildings to be “locally listed”, management proposals to preserve and enhance

the area, and a character appraisal document. This document will summarise the area’s history and describe the characteristics that make the area special. It will also contain examples of things that detract from the area’s character and which could be improved.

The Council will use the document when assessing development proposals in the conservation area, to ensure that new developments are suitable.

We understand that the consultant will recommend extending the conservation area up Dartmouth Road to the Library on one side and to the end of the shopping parade on the other side. He will also recommend that the boundary be extended onto Perry Vale to encompass the small parade of shops. A report will be issued in September and public consultation will be organised for the autumn.StThe Mayor of Lewisham then Barnabas Parishwill Hall, consider the proposals by March 2009.

Link Age Southwark

Calling all Local Businesses

E

ast Dulwich based charity Link Age Southwark is looking to partner with local businesses to support their work with older people in Southwark. These businesses will become Business Patrons of the vibrant charity, which has been working in Southwark for 23 years to combat loneliness and isolation among older people. The charity recruits volunteers from the local community to offer free services to people over 60, including over 20 activity groups, weekly befriending visits, a volunteer driving service and support for people living with dementia. Link Age Southwark currently has over 350 active volunteers supporting nearly 600 older people in the borough. By becoming a Business Patron, you will join a group of thriving local businesses supporting Link Age Southwark to the value of £500 a year. Your business will benefit from visibility in the borough and association with a local, communitybased charity with a strong reputation of recruiting volunteers to support older people in the local area. Current Business Patron Lesley O’Mara, Managing Director of Michael O’Mara Books, says, “We’re very proud to support Link Age Southwark. It’s so satisfying to contribute to the local community and to witness the impact of our support. The older people who use the services are so grateful”. The charity offers a range of benefits to Business Patrons, including being thanked on their website, the opportunity to feature in their widely-distributed newsletters to donors, volunteers and supporters, and social media publicity. Business Patron and Dulwich Village Beauty Clinic owner Lesley Leale-Green, says, “Link Age Southwark provides fantastic care and support to Southwark residents, so it was a very easy choice when we were asked to consider a business sponsorship with the charity! As residents and

Pets Corner

Toxins in the home

E

aster is on its way and most dog owners are well aware of the tremendous harm those chocolate goodies can do to their pet if ingested, but many will be less aware to what extent the average household is filled with potentially harmful products, some of which may have an insidious effect on their pet’s health.

Human Medication

Top of the list are drugs we accidently leave lying around. Insurance data lists accidental ingestion of human medication- whether over the counter or prescription, as a major source of pet poisoning. Those little pills can look a lot like treats to dogs, cats or even pet pigs! The sugar coating on some pills make them irresistible, and talented pets can have a great time breaking into handbags, low cupboards or supposedly child proof pill boxes. Keep human medication up high in secure cupboards and drawers, beyond your pet’s reach.

Household Cleaning Agents

It is obvious that many strong household cleaners are likely to be toxic. Most pet owners will recognise the dangers of exposure to large amounts of chemical but are less aware of the long term effects of multiple small exposures to a range of cleaning products. Many products contain chemicals which give off VOC’s (volatile organic compounds). These light, airborne molecules are diffuse and easily inhaled and it is thought are associated with cancers and metabolic disorders. Our pets with their smaller lungs and faster metabolisms process and absorb the toxins into their bloodstreams much more quickly. Products like air fresheners, toilet and bathroom cleaners, drain cleaners and oven and floor cleaners are all potentially toxic to your pets. Any tiny bits of residue on floors or other surfaces may be ingested by your pet as they lick paws and fur that has come into contact with the chemicals. One exposure may do little harm but multiple exposures over time are a different matter. Keep pets in another room when products are used. Rinse and dry surfaces thoroughly.

Plastic and Metal

Pets can munch on wiring and other ‘soft’ metal objects they find lying around; metals like zinc and lead are toxic and the results of that toxicity may not be seen for days. Plastics are another hazard and ‘greedy’ dog breeds like Labradors may enjoy chewing on plastic items such as milk cartons or children’s toys and then cannot help but follow through their gustatory activity with a swallow. Many dogs end up at the vet as a result of impaction. A startling range of household products, including plastic bags and the new £5 note, contain animal by-products, including beef products; it is thought certain pets might associate the smell of these with ‘food’.

Alcohol

Some people think it is cute to let their pet sample alcohol but animals like humans vary in their sensitivity to alcohol and even a small amount of beer could cause your pet lasting damage.

Food

Chocolate and coffee are known dangers as are grapes, raisons, various nuts, onions and garlic, but, pet owners are less aware of the dangers of food containing artificial sweeteners. The rise of the sugar tax and ways to tackle sugar related diseases like diabetes and conditions like obesity, have prompted food manufacturers to search hard for sugar substitutes. Xylitol is used in chewing gum, jams, biscuits and cakes. It is also very toxic for dogs and can lead to low blood sugar and permanent liver damage. The takeaway is that acute episodes of poisoning or toxicity are normally pretty evident and the sick animal is rushed to the vet. However, some types of toxicity will not show for days. Multiple small exposures to harmful products may cause slow damage to organs or even, it is thought, trigger some cancers. Check out your home and think about what your pets, especially young curious animals, have access to. Leonie St Clair - www.londondogstraining SE23 - April 2017 | 23

Financial Matters

Five things I would have done differently

I

was speaking to a gentleman in his late 50s this week, and the subject of what he would have done differently in his youth came up. It made for a very interesting conversation. While he had no regrets, he did say that if life gave him a restart button, he would have gone back and done things differently.

was such a good investment. I was green with envy and this made me take a close look at my own circumstances.

Not taking advice

“I genuinely thought things would stay as they were forever when I was in my early twenties. My idea of planning for the future was preparing for the weekend! I’d get paid on Friday and be broke by Monday. I got into a cycle of never having enough money – so much so that I would borrow from my family just to get through the week. On payday, I’d have to pay everyone back and be broke again.

“I was now desperate to get onto the property ladder. I should have taken advice, but was too clever for that. A financial adviser would have advised me to get out of debt first before plunging into purchasing property. But I wanted it all now, and bought my first flat in the early nineties whilst still in significant debt. Consequently, my unscrupulous lender didn’t give me the best mortgage deal and when interest rates spiked, they were unaccommodating and my repayments unsustainable. I had no choice but to accept the major humiliation of repossession.

Being pretentious

Thinking pensions were for old people

“In my later twenties, when I started earning more money, I wanted everyone to think I was doing better than I was. So I dressed beyond my means and insisted on buying everyone drinks when out with friends. Secretly, I was broke, although it looked like I was doing well outwardly. When credit cards became accessible to the masses; I was one of the first in line and amassed a collection of them. I had one of those foldable wallets that opened out to reveal an assortment of plastic. This was considered super cool back in the eighties. And I used every one of them!

“Things settled down for me in my late thirties; I finally got out of debt and purchased a property. Most importantly, I got married; and this was the catalyst to a brighter future. My wife is naturally excellent with money and I follow her lead. I can still be extravagant, but now have a pension (which I started too late), life insurance and a decent strategy for saving. If ony I had been a little more sensible earlier in life!

Thinking I’d be young forever

Starting everything too late “I had my wake-up call in my early thirties when one of my good friends invited me to his house warming party. I was still renting at the time, but he had bought a very nice house in London. Impressed as I was, I was puzzled as to how he had done it, because I knew he earned no more than I did. Popping outside with him for a chat, he told me how he’d sacrificed to save for a deposit, how he stayed away from debt and how property 26 | SE23 - April 2017

“Our biggest challenge is passing these lessons on to our children. My son especially thinks he’s going to be young forever and lives for the weekends. I wonder where he gets that from?”

Garden Talk

Grow your own herbs

T

here’s nothing nicer – or healthier - than cooking with fresh herbs picked from your own garden. Most are easy to grow and look fab, whether in borders or containers and raised beds. Mediterranean varieties prefer sun and free-draining soil - add coarse grit and organic matter to clay soil. Others, such as coriander, mint and parsley prefer some shade and plenty of moisture. Here’s my pick of the best.

Mint Mint can be invasive in a border, so it’s best grown in a pot. It Iikes rich moist soil and can tolerate shade. Keep picking it to encourage growth and divide it when it’s outgrown the container. Varieties include Lemon Mint, Apple Mint and Chocolate Mint – nice in puddings! Uses: Great in teas and summer drinks, with roast lamb or in Middle Eastern dishes such as couscous – I love mint sprinkled over feta and salmon before roasting.

Sage Sage has lovely silvery leaves, but needs a good prune in early spring to stop it getting leggy. There are varieties with different leaf colours, such as purple and golden sage. Uses: Great with onions in stuffing, with pork or sage butter.

Thyme Its foliage comes in colours from golden yellow to variegated silver – and is best picked before the pretty pink or purple summer flowers. Use: Use a few fresh leaves in stews and with meat such as beef burgers – also nice in minestrone soup.

Bay A handsome evergreen shrub that can be trained into a ball, pyramid or lollipop. Use: Bay leaves – fresh or dried - give a lovely flavour to stocks and soups. (Remove them before blending!)

Rosemary A must-have herb – rosemary is tough, easy to grow and has pretty blue, lilac or white flowers. It can get big but is easy to prune into a neat shape. ‘Miss Jessopp’s Upright’ has a tall habit whereas creeping prostrate varieties are good hanging over walls. Use: Great with roast lamb and roast veg.

Oregano (marjoram)

Best harvested before the pretty purple-pink flowers appear – but they’re lovely too and are a bee magnet! Use: Strip off a few of the leaves for tomato-based pasta sauce or Bolognese. Or use the woody stems to make a bouquet garni.

Chives:

Chives like well-drained soil, but can grow in heavier soils in partial shade. The flowers are so pretty, and you can eat them in salads, then cut the plant back to the ground for a second flush. Otherwise keep snipping off buds to encourage growth. Use: With a similar flavor to garlic and onions, they’ll liven up salads, eggs and cheese dishes.

Fennel

The tall feathery foliage of fennel looks lovely with other tall perennials in a border and the yellow flowers are followed by edible seeds. Use: Fresh leaves are tasty in salads and collect the dried seeds to make teas.

Basil

Unlike the others, basil is an annual. Grow in pots on a warm windowsill and avoid overwatering. You can grow it from seed or small plants – I bought a pot from the supermarket last year and divided it into five different pots. Sweet basil and Greek basil are two good varieties to look out for. Use: Delicious sprinkled on pizzas or tomato-based Mediterranean dishes or blend with pine nuts and parmesan to make your own pesto.
