Welcome to SE23 There have been a few changes since my last issue, mainly the reopening of non-essential shops. This is fabulous news for the local community and it is great to see more of our shopkeepers back in business. Did you know there is a golf club over in East Dulwich? Aquarius Golf Club is one of East Dulwich’s hidden gems. New lady captain Fiona Nott shares her experiences since joining the club on page 24. Local charity Link Age Southwark has launched a brand new project Bloomin’ Lovely, with the aim of bringing colour and nature back to the lives of older people, but they need your help to make it happen. See page 30 for more. The Last Word goes to Orlene Henry. Orlene is a mum of two and local fitness instructor. Find out more on page 32. We all know how important it is to shop local, but I am going to say it again! Please do consider all the wonderful people who work hard all year round to keep the independent spirit of Forest Hill and Honor Oak alive. Where you can, please do support them by shopping locally. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk for all local events. Until next time, take good care.

Renowned choreographer Dane Hurst and his team of award-winning dancers and designers brought a powerful new dance work to the Gallery’s mausoleum as part of Ribera: Art of Violence in 2018. Entitled Animalis (the Latin word for breath or soul), the performance responds to the shocking and sensational work by the Spanish Baroque artist, Jusepe de Ribera. Hurst’s trio of dancers give form to the emotional tensions, psychological resonances and physical impulses captured on the artist’s 17th-century canvases, resulting in a powerful interpretation of human suffering. The performance took place in the Gallery’s intimate mausoleum every Sunday as part of the exhibition - and you can now watch it in full via: www.dulwichpicturegallery.org.uk.

Bring Some Zing Into Your Borders With Euphorbia Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw These fab foliage plants add structure, texture and lushness to the garden. Many varieties also have bright acid green flowers in spring and early summer that bring a zingy freshness to planting, beautfully complimenting purples and blues. There are many to choose from, whether for height or ground cover, sun or shade. Here’s my pick.

For Heigh & Structure E. characias wulfenii This well-known euphorbia has stems of bluish green leaves (up to 1.5m high) forming a rounded shape. From March it comes alive with blowsy lime green flowers that will lighten up the garden with plants such Erysimum ‘Bowles Mauve’ or alliums. It tolerates some shade but prefers a sunny spot and is drought tolerant once established - perfect for a gravel or Mediterranean garden. E. characias ‘Humpty Dumpty’ and E. ‘Blue Wonder’ are smaller versions. E. ‘Black Pearl’ with dark black eyes and yellow flower heads is more unusual, or for a silvery colour scheme try variegated E. characias 'Silver Swan'.

E. mellifera This is a beautiful exotic-looking plant with bright green evergreen leaves and rusty orange, honeyscented flowers in spring. It gets big – around 2m or taller– so it’s perfect if you want a large architectural structure. Combining it with spiky or large leaved plants or bold colours creates a tropical feel. It likes full sun or partial shade. E. pasteurii has similar long striking leaves (though slightly darker) and orangey flowers in early summer, but it’s smaller a 1.5 m in height. It’s another sun lover and looks good with yellow flowers or lush grasses such as Hackonachloea macra.

Lower Growing E. griffithii ‘Great Dixter’. If you want a bit of summer colour, this is fab. The warm orange flower heads in summer are followed by red and orange autumn leaves. Or E. griffithii ‘Fireglow’ has bright red flowers for even more of a wow factor.

E. palustris 12 | SE23 - July 2020

With its fresh green foliage and mass of bright green flowers throughout the summer months, this looks amazing with blues, such as Iris ‘Tropical Night’ or I. ‘Jane Phillips’. It reaches about 90cm. Or for flowers with more of a yellowy tone, try E. wallichii.

E. x martinii With red-eyed flowers from March until late June, this striking euphorbia looks good with other dark red/pink early flowering perennials such as aquilegia. It’s compact and upright, at 75cm in height.

Shade Lovers E. Amygdaloides var. robbiae Fab for brightening up a shady spot, this low growing (50cm) euphorbia is one of the earliest to flower, with dark glossy green leaves and fresh lime green flower that look great with dark purple tulips. Good for carpeting a tricky spot, though it can be invasive. E. amygdaloides ‘Purpurea’ is similar but has crimson stems.

Maintenance Some evergreen euphorbias need to have their faded blooms cut back after flowering, while others such as E. characias need their stems cut back down the ground after flowering, to encourage new shoots. Deciduous varieties need to be cut down to the ground in autumn. Euphorbias have a thick milky sap than can be a skin irritant, so wear gloves and long sleeves. Wash off immediately if you do get some on your hands. Euphorbia’s do have a tendency to spread or self-seed - some more than others, but they’re easy enough to weed.

Couscous with broad beans, mint & lemon & baked fish Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk

I

know lots of you have been growing your own this year whilst in lockdown and by now you should be seeing the result of your hard work. Our allotment is bursting at the seams right now. We are picking raspberries and strawberries daily they are delicious straight from the punnet, served with cream and sugar or even chocolate cake. Our cherry tree is loaded with fruit and ripe for picking too. In the vegetable patch July is particularly good for legumes, with peas at their sweet, snappy best and the first long leggy runner beans dangling from their vines. Thin skinned new potatoes should be around for a little longer too; boiled and buttered they go with almost anything. Serves 4: Preparation 20 minutes

For The Couscous • • • • •

1300g (10oz) shelled fresh broad beans 200g (6.5oz) couscous 2tbsp roughly chopped fresh mint Zest and juice of 1 lemon Extra Virgin Olive Oil (optional)

For The Fish • • • • •

4 Portions (150-175g/5/6oz each) fish, such as salmon, trout, tuna, mackerel, mullet or sea bass. Off the bone, leave the skin on if you wish (de-scale the salmon, mullet or sea bass) Chilli Garlic Lemon Salt & freshly ground black pepper

Directions 1) Mix together the chilli, garlic and lemon juice and pour over the fish. Leave to marinade for 2 hours, or overnight for depth of flavour. 2) Preheat the oven to 180C/350F/Gas 4. 3) Place each fish portion on a large piece of oiled parchment paper or aluminium foil and season with salt and freshly ground black pepper. Then roll up the edges of the paper or foil to prevent the juices from burning and enclose, sealing the edges. Cook in the oven for 12-18 minutes or until the fish is cooked through to the centre (firm to the touch). 4) Meanwhile, drop the shelled broad beans into 14 | SE23 - July 2020

a large saucepan of boiling salted water. Return to the boil and cook rapidly for 2-3 minutes, drain and place the beans in a bowl of cold water. When cold, drain again. Remove the pale green skins from the beans and place the podded broad beans in a bowl. 5) Place the couscous in a large heat-proof bowl. Bring 400ml (13fl oz) of water to the boil. Pour it over the couscous, cover tightly with cling film and set aside for 7-10 minutes, or until the water is absorbed. 6) Add the broad beans, chopped mint, lemon juice and zest to the couscous and stir through. Toss well to fluff up the couscous. Season to taste with salt and freshly ground black pepper, and drizzle with olive oil if you wish (avoid if you are counting the calories!). 7) To serve, place the couscous on warmed serving plates with the fish alongside. Enjoy!

How Lockdown Changed My Exercise Routine Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com Lockdown Has Changed My Exercise Routine - Here Is Why How has the lockdown impacted your exercise routine? Some of you might have taken up running, signed up for online classes and others might have given exercise a total break for now – or at least until the gyms are opening up again. This month I want to talk to you a bit about how my exercise routine has changed and how I have tweaked my exercise sessions during this period while I have been working exclusively from home. This is a piece of advice I normally withhold, because many of us are office based and it becomes a bit of a moot point, but I've tweaked the timing of my exercise sessions.

Our Nervous System: Sympathetic And Parasympathetic Nervous System I want to explain to you why I have tweaked the timing of my session. The optimal time to do a harder or more exerting exercise session is actually the afternoon. It is roughly between 2pm and 4pm or thereabouts. And the reasons for that are our nervous systems in the morning are already primed for the day ahead, and it isn't very good to jack up what we call the sympathetic nervous system (also known as “fight or flight”) first thing in the morning. It is better to start our day with an activity that is more parasympathetic (also referred to as “rest and digest”) dominant. In other words, something that is more gentle, more restorative. A dog walk, for example, or some time out in the parks, nature, woodland or even bouncing up and down. So I now start my day in a gentle way to drain what's called the lymphatic system and get the body moving for the day. But intense hard exercise isn't ideal first thing in the morning. Now, for many people, that is the only time they could have got it done. And if that is the case, no worries.

Flexibility around our working day Now we've got more flexibility around our working day, my recommendation is to start the day with 16 | SE23 - July 2020

something more gentle and restorative, and do that harder workout at around 2pm or 3pm or 4pm, maybe 5pm in the afternoon. And that is what I have been doing. I have been doing the gentle dog walk in the morning, doing the bulk of my work, and then putting my hard exercise session in, or my more exerting demanding session in at around 4pm or 5pm, something like that.

Grip strength, protein and hormones The physiological reasons for why that is, is that our grip strength, our protein synthesis, our testosterone and various other hormones that get us really primed for the toughest stuff peak in the afternoon. Numerous studies have demonstrated that that is the best time to do that kind of demanding exercise session. So, if you can, why don’t give this a try? Perhaps you’ll feel differently or perhaps you’ll see further improvements in your workouts.

t our Cinnamon care homes in Blackheath, we understand how difficult it can be for families or friends to look after those dear to them who are struggling to live independently. Throughout the current crisis, many families are choosing the Cinnamon Care Collection homes to look after their loved ones, not only for the friendly environment and personalised care we provide but also for the reassurance and companionship we can bring. Rectory Court offers high quality residential care and Leah Lodge, situated less than half a mile away is the ideal place to care for people living with dementia. The professional teams in both homes strive to make each day special for all our residents offering tailored support and exemplary care as often or as little as needed. Our holistic approach places dignity and respect at the forefront of everything we do. We believe that it is possible to live an active and fulfilled life after a diagnosis of dementia. Our

specially trained team at Leah Lodge is known for their patience, empathy and compassion together with continued support for family and friends. Five Tips To Help You Start Your Own Business “Furlough” is a word I had never come across until the Corona Virus crisis. Being on your company’s payroll, but – until the rules change on 1 July, not actually working for them must be very strange. In many cases, being furloughed could lead to an even worse state of affairs – a permanent reduction in hours and salary or worse still, redundancy. How awful. Many people prefer the perceived security of an employed position than the alleged insecurity of being self-employed or owning their own business. Things may be changing. Many clients, friends and family have been in touch with me during this period fed up with the uncertainty surrounding their employment and for the first time, are looking for an alternative way to make a living. This of course would involve going it alone using the self-employed route or starting their own business. This is of course a big step and involves a compete mindset reset. Here are a few tips for those considering going it alone.

1) Decide what you want to do & stick to it This is where many people go wrong; they start their business but take their eye off the ball, afraid to commit and looking at other ideas just in case theirs doesn’t take off. Wrong. If you believe in your business idea and have thought it through properly, why not give it everything? Diverting your focus simply dilutes your energy.

2) Work out the structure early on Once you’ve decided what type of business you are going to get involved in, work out what structure would best suit you. Would you be going it alone or including a partner or partners? Including a partner or partners might appear to be the least risky

20 | SE23 - July 2020

option. Remember however that people change and with time, having a partner or partners may turn out to be a liability or a complete nightmare. Other things to consider would be whether to set up as a sole trader or limited company. An accountant should be able to help you make the right decision.

3) There’s no need to be an inventor! Having a unique business idea that no one else has thought of is fantastic and almost guaranteed to give you success. But don’t worry if your business idea has already been thought of. That shouldn’t stop you. Taking someone else’s idea and doing it better than them can lead to great success, so don’t feel you have to be an inventor. Taking on a tried and tested business idea can give you more security because there is more data available to help you analyse why businesses in your particular trade have succeeded or failed.

4) Get advice: Advice takes many forms You could speak to your bank about banking and funding, a financial adviser about insurances and planning for the future, an accountant about taxation and company structure and a solicitor about contracts and legal affairs. In my humble opinion however, the most valuable advice would come from business owners who operate in your chosen field. Successful business owners love nothing more than to talk about their successes, so why not contact your competitors and find out how they did it over a coffee? You’d be surprised how many would give you time of day and share all their secrets with you!

5) Get your numbers right This is probably the most important part of setting up a business. Work out best, worst and middle of the road scenarios for your business’s cashflow. Using phrases like “what if” will help you test the resilience of your business in various situations in the safety of a simulator as opposed to out in the real world where getting it wrong would cause real pain. Once you’ve done all this, get started with courage and enthusiasm. You may need a bit of luck, but you’ll never look back!

As with the Feast programmes that you all know and love, we’ll be bringing you information about our favourite Traders – including exclusive special offers – along with a jam packed entertainment schedule and activities for kids. West Norwood’s community spirit shines through on these days and we’re proud that we’re still bringing Feast to West Norwood (albeit virtually). Many of our Feast visitors are keen to understand our plans for the rest of the year now that the government has started lifting restrictions. We are as keen as everyone to get back to our usual West Norwood Feast on the high street; now more than ever our local high streets and small traders need our support. We are working closely with Lambeth and other local community groups to ensure that our future plans are appropriate, well thought out and workable. Our visitor, trader and volunteer safety is our primary concern, and until we are absolutely happy that all safely aspects are covered, we’ll continue to run our virtual Feasts. Things are moving quickly, guidance is still emerging so we’re working hard behind the scenes to plan. Stay tuned! https://westnorwoodfeast.com.

There are options to come for just 1 hour (£5) and 2 hours (£10) and 3 hours (£15). For all abilities. When life drawing, short poses are excellent for training the eye and the hand and building the ability to sum up the essence of the figure with economy. Each hour will start with short poses and work up to two or three ten minute poses. This is a familiar format for life drawing sessions which most of us find very satisfactory. Whilst the session runs for three hours it is possible to attend one, two or three hours, as works for you. Joining or leaving the group happens promptly on the hour. Aquarius Golf Club East Dulwich’s Hidden Gem

Ever thought about taking up golf or played in the past & tempted to play again? For many ladies, joining a golf club can be intimidating or it feels too expensive or time consuming. Fiona Nott, Lady Captain at the Aquarius Golf Club, shares her experience on the welcome she received as a beginner and how golf has opened up new friendships.

I

always wanted to take up golf, but thought it would be really intimidating to join a golf club and with a full time job, where I travel regularly, I never thought I would have the time to dedicate to it. I set myself the challenge of playing my first round of golf before my 50th birthday, which I achieved with just two days to spare! Fast forward four years later and I became Lady Captain in March this year having joined the Aquarius only four years ago. I have met so many lovely people during those four years and my experience is one of welcome, informality and friendship – words I didn’t associate with golf. I still remember so clearly my terror when I pitched up for my courtesy round but Pam and Maureen couldn’t have been more friendly or encouraging and I joined the same day. Was golf really this sociable and fun? The answer has been a definite yes as I have met new friends, attended golf weekends and even spent a week playing in Spain – how did this happen to a novice golfer like me? The Aquarius is a wonderful course to learn on and develop your game but also has a great range of social events. One of the things I really enjoy about golf is taking prospective new members out for a courtesy round. As a relative newcomer to golf I can still relate to the fear and I was reminded of this on Saturday when I met a prospective new member, Alisa, and she said she was so nervous of playing. We spent two hours playing the course, chatting about numerous ad hoc topics and generally having a good time and she joined this week. Her feedback sums up what we hope to deliver at the Aquarius – “Thank you so, so much for my round on Saturday, what a wonderful playing partner - I absolutely loved it. I am really quite motivated to play regularly and improve – it will give me a great sense of satisfaction if I can look back at the end of this summer and feel as though I've achieved some real progress!” We have a diverse mix of ladies across all ages, playing abilities and handicaps and that is part of the appeal of Aquarius. We have ladies who have

24 | SE23 - July 2020

New Lady Captain Fiona Nott (left) & Marion Taylor

been members for 30 years and who have formed lifelong friendships at the club, while our newest member only joined last week. Pam, a member for 25 years summed her response as “playing golf provides fresh air, exercise, good company, a friendly club and it is so local for a drink!” I admit my optimism of quickly reducing my handicap has never been achieved, but I love the challenge of improving and the fun and friendships I have encountered. Our unique 9-hole course in the heart of London might not be the smartest but where else can you tee off towards the Shard and with views across London. I lived in East Dulwich for 16 years, unaware of the course and now love to highlight what a secret gem it is for the area. Biting Puppies

Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair | www.londondogstraining.co.uk

I

n the course of lockdown there has been an enormous increase in puppy ownership. Every other call I have had has been from a new owner who is worried and confused by puppy biting. They ask, is this normal? Surely it should not be this bad? Will I cope? I want to reassure as many new owners as possible that, yes, biting is normal, and, yes, it hurts. The solution involves a consistent and systematic approach by everyone interacting with your puppy. There can be no half measures if you want to nip puppy biting in the bud. Most pups will have had plenty of practice terrorising and roughing up litter mates. It is surprising how intense puppy play can be. Using needle sharp teeth, pups explore the limits of play and inadvertently hurt each other. Once a pup is hurt, he may snarl and retaliate but often as not he will simply remove himself for a while and the ‘biter’ loses his playmate. Each pup learns very quickly if I want to play with other puppies, I need to control how hard I bite them. The new pup arrives home at 8 weeks. Teeth are the puppy equivalent of toddler hands, into anything and everything. The pup already finds ‘bitey’ play very exciting and with no litter mates in sight human hands, shuffling feet, and flappy clothes present a fabulous alternative- from the pup perspective anyway! So, puppy latches on and we humans, especially human children, wandering around in our summer shorts and bare feet, shriek and quickly move, flapping arms and legs to get the little gremlin off. Bingo, thinks the puppy, this is great, and he chomps down harder. Some pups, especially those from working lines, can be especially bitey but it is also a matter of personality and rearing. Nonetheless, the approach is broadly similar. First of all, dress appropriately, your puppy will at some point bite feet or legs because movement triggers play biting.

1) The first strategy is to stop moving. Movement makes your limbs less enticing but wear sturdy clothing and shoes. 2) Make a noise like a ‘kissy-kissy’ sound. The aim is not to startle or chastise but to interrupt the biting. The idea is the pup learns this noise predicts a reward and turns to you, removing his teeth 26 | SE23 - July 2020

Photo by Daniel Lincoln on Unsplash

as he does. Immediately praise and redirect his attention onto a legitimate food chew or exciting toy. Praise when pup latches on to that. Repeat, repeat, repeat. It’s a good idea to practise making the noise, rewarding each time pup looks at you, before using it for play biting. 3) At the next stage, the ‘landshark’ may decide he prefers biting you to anything and won’t stop, even chasing you to continue. Having said your interruption word to no avail, immediately get up, leave the room and shut the door in pup’s face. Wait until he is silent and still (anything from seconds to a few minutes) and re-enter. If biting persists repeat, repeat, repeat. 4) A houseline may be necessary, so you can hold puppy away while you exit the room. Or instead temporarily tether the pup to stop access to you inside the room. Make sure the houseline is primed with taste deterrent first. 5) Always consider why your pup is biting. Is he too tired or over stimulated (a timeout/ rest with chew in a crate or pen should calm him). Is he hungry, does he need the toilet? Teething will amp up chewing, so ensure your pup has lots of options to ease itchy or sore gums. None of this will disappear overnight, play biting goes in waves, ebbing and resurging as the pup develops. However, stick with the programme and you will succeed. Finally, be prepared for the realities of play biting, when your darling fur baby suddenly morphs into a little monster!

Mindset Matters With Becca Teers | www.healthy-habits.me | www.mindplus-experience.com

Ways to Overcome Fear of Change! Coming out of lockdown and embracing the ‘new normal’ is bringing up real fears & anxieties. There is a fear of catching the virus, as many more people are venturing out again, using public transport, shopping etc. For those that suffer with social anxiety it’s the social aspect of coming out of lockdown. For people who are more introverted or are not naturally at ease around others, being at home has been a welcome relief. All of the normal everyday pressures of life and having to interact and mix with others have been avoided. Understandably people are also nervous about having to work in a different way and there are some real fears about job security. Here Are Some Mindset Tips for Coping with Change.

1) You’ve survived change before! Remember that you’ve dealt with change before and you will do it again! Make a note of all of the times that changes have happened in your life up to now. Realise that you dealt with these changes and maybe even thrived afterwards. Maybe you voluntarily changed something in your life or maybe change happened to you, but you coped with it and you will again.

2) Use positive language If you’re dreading doing something, instead of saying things to yourself like “I don’t want to do this” or “This is so scary.” Tell yourself“ I’m choosing to do this.” “It’s good to do this”. If change is happening to you, tell yourself “I have incredible coping skills.” “I’m choosing to feel good about change.” “I’ve dealt with change before and I’m strong and resilient.” “ I will deal with challenges easily & naturally.” Repeat these words often & notice how your mindset shifts & you feel more comfortable with change.

3) Use the power of visualization Visualization is such a powerful tool that we all have at our disposal. The truth is the brain doesn’t differentiate between ‘real’ & ‘imaginary’. So if 28 | SE23 - July 2020

you imagine or visualize good things happening the brain processes it as if it’s actually happening. Afterwards the brain actually counts it as a memory and will focus you more on similar things happening in the future. It makes so much sense to visualize what you want instead of what you don’t want. Ask yourself what is it that you fear the most, and train your brain to imagine the opposite happening. For example, if you’re afraid that your first day back in the office will be a disaster, imagine having a really great day, connecting with others and feeling really motivated to achieve your tasks for the day etc. You’ll be amazed at how you start to look forward to the day confidently and expect to cope with it easily.

4) “Do the thing you fear & the death of fear is certain.”- Mark Twain The mind loves what is familiar, so make the action you fear as familiar as possible (by doing it as often as you can) and the fear will disappear. This also applies to change, it may feel uncomfortable at first but as it becomes more familiar the fear will dissipate. I hope these tips & ideas help you to deal with and adapt to any change that is happening in your life.

Link Age Southwark Launches Bloomin’ Lovely

L

ocal charity Link Age Southwark has launched a brand new project with the aim of bringing colour and nature back to the lives of older people in Southwark, but they need your help to make it happen. Bloomin’ Lovely is a fundraiser with a vision of gifting plants to older people who have been unable to leave their homes for many weeks due to the COVID-19 crisis. Throughout the pandemic, the charity have been supporting over 60s who have been unable to do any kind of shopping, which includes buying plants and flowers to spruce up their homes and gardens. This project aims to raise funds to deliver bedding plants, a bunch of flowers or a houseplant to show our older friends that the local community hasn't forgotten them. A willing band of volunteer gardeners will deliver the plants and can also offer practical help with planting and tidying garden spaces to ensure our older friends’ gardens aren’t left untended. The charity’s fundraising goal is £5,000 which is being raised through an online crowdfunder page as part of the Aviva Community Fund. Aviva provides their employees with small amounts of money to pledge towards a cause of their choice. The target is all-or-nothing, which means that if Link

30 | SE23 - July 2020

Age Southwark don’t achieve £5,000 in pledges their supporters will be refunded and the project will not be funded. This is why your support is so essential. The money raised will contribute to the purchase of plants and flowers, as well as staffing costs and volunteer expenses. This is much needed since the charity have been left with no choice but to cancel their planned community events, such as open gardens and their Sunset Soiree, which raise vital funds to facilitate their services. Your support with this project will enable them to make up the shortfall in order to sustain their service provision at a time when it has never been more important. Sophie Wellings, Director of Link Age Southwark, says: “These small acts of kindness can have huge significance for those who are feeling increasingly removed from the world around them. A small contribution from you will help deliver smiles to our community of vulnerable older people who deserve to feel valued.” Can you help Link Age Southwark reach their all or nothing ‘Bloomin’ Lovely’ crowdfunder target? The Last Word – Orlene Henry

I

am Orlene Henry, a mother of two adult children, and a Group Exercise Instructor. I teach a wide range of exercise classes in and around the Forest Hill and Dulwich area. I am passionate about encouraging and motivating all adults, particularly the 50s plus age group, to make regular exercise an integral part of their lives. The very challenging consequences of lockdown we all are experiencing has led me to teaching most of my exercise classes online, currently providing 8 different classes 6 days per week.

How long have you lived in the area? I have lived in Forest Hill for over 30 years. I became a first time Mum here and happily raised my two children. They both attended very good Primary and Secondary schools in this area. And I have also worked in and around this area for as many years.

What has changed most during that time? The demographic. When I first moved here, the community was largely made up of older people who had lived in the borough of Lewisham most of their lives, and families with school aged children. In the last 10 years, many young professionals and families have settled here. More recently, I have noticed we also now have a growing number of University students House sharing.

What do you value most about the area? The beautiful rich diversity of races and cultures in our largely harmonious community. I also really value the superb Public transport services and links we have to many other parts of London and beyond.

What one thing would you change? I would get a quality Bakery back on Dartmouth road. We used to have a lovely one about 25 years ago. Also get the Hoppers restaurant group (delicious Sri Lankan food!) to open a branch. And finally re open Barclays Bank!!! It is sorely missed!

The one thing you couldn't do without? Music. Of all genres. I was raised in a household where music was always on somewhere in the family home. I'm always singing, humming or dancing along to a good tune. On a sunny day, working or relaxing in my garden, my music is often being played, and great music is an essential component of all my exercise classes.

Where is your favourite place to eat? If a fancy a good takeaway, my first choice would be the Chinese takeaway Fortune Inn, on Dartmouth Road. You'll always be guaranteed a warm friendly 32 | SE23 - July 2020

welcome by the lady who takes the orders. The food is always fresh, tasty and reasonably priced. For delicious top quality meat products, hands down, I head straight to The Butchery on London road.

When I want to relax My favourite tunes wafting through my Bluetooth speaker, with me either tending to my veg and herb beds, or stretched out on my Lounger, reading or nodding off.

If money was no object I would employ the services of the very talented architect George Clarke, and have him totally renovate my home, creating more space and light everywhere. And I would ask him to build me a state of art, fully equipped, sprung wooden floored exercise studio.

My secret ambition Is to have the time to attend College and learn two languages. Spanish; borne out of my longstanding love of Latin music and Salsa dancing. And Mandarin because I have a dear friend who speaks it fluently, so I would love to be able to converse, or at the very least, understand what is being said in this language.
