Welcome to SE23 I am celebrating 15 years of our sister publication SE22, this month, which paved the way for SE23, 18 months later. It is fantastic to have so much local support with wonderful readers, writers and businesses advertising. I couldn’t do it without you! There are plenty of events on this month too, so make sure you take a good look through the news pages, starting on page 8. Remember that we also have more events on our website www.arounddulwich.co.uk along with daily posts. The Last Word goes to Helen Anderson who is a local womenswear designer and has recently launched her first collection. Find out more on page 32. Until next time

What To Do In The Garden This March Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw 1) Mulch. After weeding, give bare soil a thick layer of organic matter such as well-rotted manure. Mulch stops soil losing water as weather warms up, suppresses weeds and smartens everything up. 2) Fertilise. Sprinkle soil with an organic slow release fertilser, such as chicken pellets or fish, blood and bone and lightly fork around trees and shrubs. Give roses a special rose feed or a balanced fertiliser. 3) Plant and deadhead bulbs. Divide or plant snowdrops while they’re still green. Deadhead daffodils, leaving the green foliage. Plant summerflowering bulbs such as gladiolus and lilies in a sunny spot. 4) Invest in spring flowering plants. I love blue Brunnera ‘Jack Frost’ and pulmonaria ‘Blue Ensign’ as well as magnolias and camellias – the single white varities are particularly delicate. This is also a good time to plant new climbers, 22cm away from walls and the last chance to plant bare root trees, roses and shrubs – the hair roots need to start getting established. 5) Move plants. Move shrubs that are in the wrong place, taking as large a root ball as you can, adding well-rotted compost. 6) Divide plants. Create new plants by dividing large clumps of perennials. Use two forks back to back to tease the roots apart – and don’t worry if some roots break. 7) Prune perennials. Cut down overgrown perennials and grasses to make way for new growth. Prune your roses removing dead, diseased and crossing stems, then pruning flowering wood back by a third. Established cornus (dogwood) can now be cut down to the base to encourage colourful winter stems. Prune hydrangeas to a third of last year’s growth. 8) Late flowering clematis (Group 3) such as Jackmannii and ‘Etoile Violette’, by cutting them 2324cm from the ground, to just above a healthy bud. Summer flowering jasmine can also be pruned by taking out the main stem or two to the ground. Honeysuckle, ivies, rambling roses and winter flowering jasmine can also be pruned hard. 12 | SE23 - March 2020

9) Grow scented sweet peas by make a bamboo wigwam, and planting two seeds at 30cm intervals and 1cm deep in situ. Young plants may need help before tendrils twine themselves around the support. 10) Cut and feed your lawn. Start mowing your lawn for first time on a high setting. If needed, aerate it by making holes with a fork 10cm deep and 20cm apart. Give the lawn a feed of chicken manure pellets towards the end of the month – ideally when the lawn is damp.

Triple Ginger Cheesecake with Poached Rhubarb Recipes from Suzanne James | www.suzannejames.co.uk Preparation time about 30-45 minutes. Serves 8-12. Cooking time approximately 30 minutes in total plus chilling minimum 3 hours.

Ingredients For The Base • • • •

100g Duchy Original Stem Ginger Biscuits or Ginger Nuts Finely Crushed 50g Digestive Biscuits 60g butter, melted 20cm (8”) spring form tin, greased

Ingredients For The Filling • • • • • • • • • •

400g forced rhubarb trimmed and cut into 2.5cm batons 50g caster sugar (for the rhubarb) 1 tbsp grated stem ginger 1 tbsp stem ginger syrup from the jar 800g cream cheese 75ml double cream 200g caster sugar (for the filling mixture) 1 vanilla pod, split & seeds scraped out 2 whole eggs 2 egg yolks

Method

1) For the base, place the biscuits and butter in a bowl, stir well and then press into the base of the tin. Place in the fridge to chill. 2) Prepare the rhubarb. Put 50g caster sugar, the stem ginger syrup and 1tablespoon of water in a wide shallow pan and bring to a gentle simmer. Add the rhubarb and poach gently for 10 minutes or until the rhubarb is just cooked when tested with the point of a knife. Do not allow the rhubarb to go mushy. Place a sieve over a bowl and drain the rhubarb well. Reserve the juice. 3) Whilst the rhubarb and the base are cooling prepare the filling, preheat the oven to 200°C/180°C fan/Gas Mark 6. 4) Put the cream cheese, cream, sugar, vanilla seeds, eggs and egg yolks in a clean blender or food processor and blend until smooth and mixed – do not blend for more than a minute, otherwise the mixture might split if it overheats. 5) Now scatter the grated stem ginger over the biscuit base, and then evenly spread half of your drained poached rhubarb on top. 14 | SE23 - March 2020

6) Pour the filling mixture over the rhubarb in the cake frame or tin, then tap the frame a couple of times to remove any trapped air bubbles 7) Bake the cheesecake in the oven for 22–25 minutes. Once cooked, the top will have coloured golden brown slightly and will have risen (souffléd) slightly, but it will sink back down once set. The cheesecake will also still have a slight wobble in the centre when it’s ready (once chilled, this will have set perfectly). 8) While the cheesecake is cooking, place the reserved rhubarb juices in a small pan and cook over a gentle heat so that it reduces to a thick syrup. Leave to cool. 9) Remove from the oven and leave the cheesecake to cool at room temperature for 30 minutes, then chill in the fridge for a minimum of 3 hours before cutting. The chilled baked cheesecake will keep in the fridge for up to 3 days. 10) Cut the chilled cheesecake into 8-12 even portions. Decorate with the remaining poached rhubarb and spoon a little of the syrup over each slice.

In Season This Month Fruit & Nuts - Forced Rhubarb Vegetables & Herbs - Brussels Sprouts, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celeriac, Chicory, Jerusalem Artichoke Kale Leek, Onion, Pak Choi, Parsnip, Purple Sprouting Broccoli, Salsify, Spinach, Spring Onions, Swede, Turnips, Sweet Potato, Wild Nettles Meat & Game - Hare, Spring Lamb Fish - Cockles, Cod, Dab, Dover Sole, Gurnard, Hake, Halibut, Langoustine, Lemon Sole, Lobster, Mussels, Oysters, Red Mullet, Salmon, Shrimp, Whitebait, Winkles

How To Rest & Recharge

S

Fitness tips with Leanne Spencer | www.bodyshotperformance.com omething that occurred to me relatively recently is that I’m a classic blend between extrovert and introvert – I have very extroverted tendencies, but also quite introverted. And what was really eye opening to me, is when someone explained the difference between the two. An extrovert isn’t someone who loves to be at parties and is always shouting their heads off and an introvert isn’t the quiet one that never comes out of their shell. But, an introvert is somebody who recharges by being alone and an extrovert is someone who recharges by being with other people. That’s the true definition of it. And having heard that, I realised that one of the ways I recharge is predominantly by being alone. It’s not by socialising – that’s where I expend my energy. Once I twigged onto this, (which is quite funny that I have suddenly found this out in my mid-forties! But it’s changed the game for me a bit). I’ve really pared down my diary in terms of evening engagement. That’s when I really like to recharge and then I expend all the energy I have to expend during the day, whatever’s needed – but I like to come back, stay home and recharge in the evenings. It’s an observation I’ve since made amongst people that my company interacts with, and I interact with people who are mostly overscheduled. Have a think about how you recharge, and if it is being alone, if it is in the evenings where you get to recharge your batteries and rest and recuperate – have a look and see if you can thin out your diary a little bit to reflect that. But also think about what it is that helps you to recharge? Is it gardening? Is it reading? Is it doing something for others? Is it just spending time on your own? Whatever it is, really tap into it so that you fully understand and then make sure you’re doing enough of it throughout the week so you can get that recuperation and that rest that you need. When we think about rest, we tend to think of

22 | SE23 - March 2020

it as sitting down and doing nothing, watching television, lying in bed, or sleeping in. Yes, they are all forms of rest, but I want to open your mind to the different forms of rest that there are. What is underappreciated around rest is that it can be very active. For example, light forms of exercise; walking, a very gentle jog, or yoga can be rest. Also, indulging your hobbies and your passions. I think that's what a lot of people don't appreciate. Rest is where you're resting the mind, getting some parasympathetic dominance. The part of the nervous system that helps us to rest, repair, and digest. Something that warms the heart, or what I like to call heartfulness - something we really love, that has strong connection and meaning and purpose for you, and that's going to be very individual to you. So, think about what fills you with that warming, that makes you relax, that makes you feel like you've got space in the day for yourself and you feel recharged doing that thing. And look to your diary and make sure you've got plenty of that scheduled in. It really is as simple as that.

Environment Matters Artist and Art Therapist Grace Thompson talks about raising money for Street Trees for Living

O

ne of the most striking sights to greet me in Crofton Park was that of newly planted street trees. I loved the sense of community and decided to sponsor more tree planting when we moved here just over a year ago. I’ve always been drawn to working with the community through art workshops or environmental projects, so I thought that raising money for further trees would be a great way to meet my neighbours and work with local businesses.

Art Workshops To Raise Funds My idea was to hold art workshops in the local area where children and adults could use reclaimed wood to create abstract tree sculptures. Art is such a universal language that we all share, especially for children where it’s a natural process that they’re drawn to. For adults, it’s so enriching to see a reconnection with a sense of playfulness and creatively. We used a range of materials to create something tangible, an object that participants could take home. A significant part of the process was the connection and support of using their donations to contribute towards something positive for the local community. To play, make art, and at the same time raise money, was an engaging and productive way to involve the community to sponsor the planting of trees.

Trees I raise money for Street Trees for Living (STfL) – a local charity that works closely with Lewisham Council. Trees provide so many health benefits, both physically and mentally; they are also vital for biodiversity and wildlife. They disperse pollution and can help mitigate the effects of the climate emergency, as we face a future of incredibly hot dry summers and prolonged periods of rainfall. But trees can help prevent flooding and keep urban areas cool, as well as absorbing greenhouse gases. In our local area, we can all do something very tangible – and work together to raise funds for greener, healthier streets.

The Schools Tree Project STfL currently have a project to work with schools to get trees planted on streets that surround them. Schools can raise funds for trees and Lewisham Council will provide match funding for the amount of trees that have been sponsored. Lots of our schools are in heavily polluted roads, and STfL endeavour to create green corridors to disperse pollution and protect children from toxic air, mainly from vehicle exhaust emissions. Comprehensive research finds harm from head to toe when we are exposed to pollution, including stunted lung growth in children, asthma and heart and lung disease. My daughter goes to a local school that is very environmentally conscious, and we are raising money for five trees – the council will match with an additional five. This scheme is a great way to get the school and its local community really engaged with tree planting. STfL also has lesson plans to connect people to the Schools Tree Project. It’s crucial to water the young trees in there first few years of life so we’ll be having schools working with the community to make sure the trees are well looked after. If you know of a school that would like to participate, please contact us below! Grace Thompson is a volunteer member of Street Trees for Living https://www.streettreesforliving.org/ For upcoming workshops please visit: http://www.littleartforms.com/ SE23 - March 2020 | 23

The Secret Of Being An Effective Saver

Y

ou might think I’ll say that the best way to save is by not spending. Not necessarily. We all have to live and life can be expensive. But saving on a regular basis is the best way to build up a solid chunk of money. Doing it through an automated system like direct debit or standing order is the most effective way to build up savings without really having to think about it day to day. But someone saving to buy a car may use a completely different method of saving to someone saving to but a house or someone saving for retirement. There are however some common rules to adhere to if you want to save effectively.

1) Have A Goal Saving isn’t always easy especially if you are the kind of person who is constantly juggling your income and outgoings. Saving for something specific is always more effective than simply saving for the sake of it. Having a specific goal will also keep you motivated.

2) Work Out Your Budget Are you actually in a position to save? You won’t know unless you work out your budget. Simply put, this is your income vs your expenditure. Find out how much you have left every month after all your expenses are paid. Some of this money may be used to save.

3) Get Rid Of Your Debts Apart from your mortgage which is easier said than done to get rid of, getting rid of any credit cards or loans makes sense before you start. This is because the debit interest you pay on debts is almost always higher than any credit interest you’ll receive in a savings account. Once debt free, you can start saving.

4) Rainy Day Money Start by building and setting aside an amount of money for a rainy day such as time off work due to illness or an emergency fund for mishaps. As a minimum, we would recommend 3 to 6 month’s net 28 | SE23 - March 2020

salary to be kept somewhere easily accessible.

5) Short Term Savings Decide how much you are likely to spend on things like a car or a holiday in a given year. Divide that figure by 12 to give yourself a monthly amount to save. This should be invested in a relatively easily accessible account. If you keep this up, in 12 months’ time, as if by magic, you’ll have enough money to pay for whatever you need.

6) Medium Term Savings Medium term savings would include things like saving for a house deposit or saving for a wedding. It’s quite simple to set an amount to save monthly. Let’s say your goal is £15,000 in five years’ time. Just divide that figure by 5 years then divide that by 12. £250 per month. That’s how much you’ll need to save on a monthly basis. For a potentially better return than cash accounts, consider a stocks and shares ISA; which, remember, carries a degree of investment risk.

7) Long Term Savings Whilst the most obvious long-term goal would be saving for retirement less obvious goals cross such as a much larger house deposit could be considered long term. Nonetheless, the most effective way to save long term if you want a good return is via stocks and shares through a workplace or personal pension or a lifetime ISA. For best results for medium and long term, speak to your independent financial adviser, who should be able to help you assess risk and find a savings vehicle that suits you.

The Last Word - Helen Anderson My name is Helen, I am a local womenswear designer and I have recently launched my first collection. I have designed a range of clothes that are aimed at being flattering and comfortable but also stylish, with colours and high quality fabrics specifically combined to achieve this. All of the manufacturing for which has been done in London.

How long have you lived here? I’ve lived in SE London for over 30 years and in Forest Hill for the past 15 years.

What brought you here? Before moving here I was a fashion student in Manchester. My ambition was to pursue a career in costume making/design implementing my fashion training, which brought me to London. I worked in the West End at the Piccadilly Theatre, National Theatre and Sadlers Wells amongst others. When I first arrived in London I visited friends in South East London and never looked back.

What one thing would you change? More clothes shops!

Do you know your neighbours? Yes, I feel lucky to have friendly neighbours who even feed our cat when we’re away.

What’s your favourite place for a night out? Sfizio restaurant behind Forest Hill station is an inviting venue which stands out from other places in the area, having a unique combination of a good menu and cosy atmosphere.

What is your favourite place to eat? It has to be The Dartmouth Arms, they have the most interesting vegetarian options on their menu.

Coffee or tea? Where? When going for business meetings I like to grab a coffee at Canvas and Cream, also they do a great halloumi breakfast. I’d definitely recommend it.

Your favourite place to go for a drink? The All in One is more than just a pub it has a community feel about it and hosts a lot of events. I went for a work Christmas dinner there once, we hired a private room, the food was excellent and we danced until the early hours. 32 | SE23 - March 2020

Where’s your favourite place to walk? The Horniman Gardens has a fantastic view of the London skyline and is a pleasure to walk around in all seasons. It is beautifully maintained and the planting is stunning.

If money was no object… I would open my own clothes shop, preferably on Dartmouth Road where it is a little more pedestrian friendly and there are a few interesting and unique shops.

My perfect holiday… Would have to have the sea, sun, a beach and plenty of sangria.

My secret ambition… To design clothes for Tess Daly on Strictly Come Dancing! www.helencatherine.com
