Welcome
This magazine went to print just after the funeral for Queen Elizabeth II. It has certainly been a time for reflection and sadness. I went along to Green Park to see all the flowers and the many amazing messages from all around the world; I found it very moving. But as we know, life goes on and magazines don’t get printed without effort!
As usual I have rounded up all the great events taking place in and around Dulwich. The events pages start on page 6. October always a busy month for events, so we have seven pages of online and in person events happening in and around Dulwich. Please do check any event before turning up to make sure that they are still going ahead. Remember to check out www.arounddulwich.co.uk Intoo.

Thursday 6 October:
One day her husband persuades her to go to a school reunion and another ex-pupil, Garfield Rice, is found dead, supposedly from a drug overdose. As Garfield was an eminent MP and the investigation is high profile, it is headed by Cassie’s new boss, DI Harbinder Kaur. The trouble is, Cassie cannot shake the feeling that one of her old friends has killed again. Is Cassie right, or was Garfield murdered by one of his political cronies? It is in Cassie’s interest to skew the investigation so that it looks like the latter and she seems to be succeeding. Until someone else is killed… Elly Griffiths is the author of the bestselling series featuring Dr Ruth Galloway. The most recent, The Locked Room, was a Sunday Times hardback number one. The series has won the CWA Dagger in the Library and has been shortlisted five times for the Theakston’s Old Peculiar Crime Novel of the Year. Thirty years later, Cassie is happily married and loves her job as a police officer.
Where the Wildflowers Grow: My Botanical Journey Through Britain and Ireland is a passionate call to arms to save our remaining flora before it’s lost. Leif’s story is an urgent one that echoes the growing environmental zeitgeist of our age. Along the way, Leif highlights the joy and positivity that can be found through understanding nature and why it is so desperately important to protect our wildflowers. Join Leif for a fascinating talk about his botanising journey around Britain and Ireland and about the joy of engaging with nature, the importance of plants for our climate, and celebrating our unbelievable botanical diversity. Dulwich Books, 6 Croxted Road, London SE21 8SW, UK. Tickets can be purchased at: grow-leif-bersweden-tickets-405242801127www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/where-the-wildflowers-

7pm – 8pm. Over the course of 2021 Leif Bersweden cycled around Britain and Ireland, tracking down the unique plants that grow there and investigating both their history and the threats that face them. His journey took him from the Cornish coast to the pine forests of Scotland, from handling carnivorous plants on the Norfolk Broads to the streets of London, proving that nature can be found in the most unexpected places. Wildflowers are everywhere we go, even in the heart of cities. Botanical diversity is a barometer for the state of our ecosystems and historically plants have been used in all aspects of our lives.

Dahlia 'Zundert Mystery Fox'
The vast dinner plate flowers of this are an ediblelooking milky coffee colour with hints of dusky pink – gorgeous! Another whopper is D. ‘Otto’s Thrill’ , glamorous and spectacular with luminous pink fully double blooms. It looks great amongst verbena bonariensis.

Dahlia ‘Eveline’
Dahlia ‘Bishop of Llandaff’
ahlias are back in fashion in a big way, sales are up and there are thousands of posts of these dramatic beauties on Instagram. Once only grown on the allotments or in a dahlia bed for flower shows and flower arranging, they’re now being used mingled amongst perennials, ornamental grasses and shrubs in borders. The darker, richer colours look great in tropical schemes, working well with lush large-leaved plants.
12 SE23 - October 2022
D
Get Into Dahlias
An iconic single with crimson flowers, a yellow eye and dark purple foliage. Others in the Bishop Series include D. ‘Bishop of Canterbury’ with deep pink flowers, a golden eye and dark foliage. As well a simplicity that’s easy to incorporate into planting schemes, singles are also great for attracting pollinators.
of care, tubers are traditionally dug up in autumn, dried off and stored over winter to be planted out in spring. But you can leave them in the ground, mulched thickly, especially in London if your soil doesn’t get too wet. You’ll also need to protect them from slugs. Encourage side shoots by pinching out the top and feed every three weeks with tomato fertiliser. If you keep deadheading them, they’ll give you fantastic colourful blooms right through autumn when everything else is fading. Some of my favourites:
Dahlia ‘Café au Lait Royal’
This is a pretty fiery coral dahlia with relaxed slightly twisted petals, which contrast beautifully with its dark purple brown stems and foliage. It’s lovely with ornamental grasses such as golden deschampsia or miscanthus. D. ‘Labyrinth’ is another peachy pink dahlia, but more lavish and romantic.
Dahlia ‘Walzing Matilda’
Dahlia ‘Chat Noir’
Dahlias come in an enormous array of colours from deep velvety purples to pale peach and corals, as well as hot and pastel pinks, whites, creams, yellows and reds (just no blue). There is also a huge range of forms from spiky cactus and anemones, simple single-flowers and stars, pom poms and massive dinner plate varieties. They can be very tall or for smaller gardens, dwarf varieties are ideal.Interms
A lovely white variety with large blousy creamywhite flowers with pink petal tips. For a more delicate white dahlia try ‘Honka Fragile’ with delicate, striking star-shaped petals also edged with pink – it can keep flowering until November if it’s deadheaded.
Garden Talk with Janine Winlaw | Instagram @janinewinlaw
A neat ball-shaped orange dahlia – fab as a cut flower with looser- looking dahlias. D. ‘Wizard of Oz’ is a super-pink pom pom that looks lovely toned down with cool blues and whites.
A large cactus variety with dark burgundy flowers this’s great for adding almost black accents in a border. The double D. ‘Arabian Night’ also has dark burgundy velvety flowers and works well with golden grasses and pinks.

people still think that they have to spend at least an hour a day or so in the gym for health. And while it is true that, more is better when it comes to movement, you can get a lot of health benefits from just 10 minutes of movement a day. This month’ tip is all about movement and specifically the health benefits of 10-minutes of exercise.
16 | SE23 - October 2022
So all you need to do in theory is a brisk 10 minutes of movement, perhaps a walk or
The Health Benefits of 10-Minutes of Movement
I’d be looking to bookend my day with 10-minutes of movement. Maybe at the beginning and the end of the day, or you use it as a wedge. So you use that 10-minutes of movement to literally drive a wedge between perhaps your morning and your lunch break, or in between two pieces of work. Or just as an opportunity to stop and reflect and move on to the next thing. Rather than going bang, bang, bang, bang into all the different things that you’re doing. Health’s a long game, making small incremental but consistent change can have a huge overall impact.
What Impact Can as Little as 10-Minutes of Brisk Walking Have?
huge return on investment, just 10 minutes of brisk walking gets you two hours of feeling good and feeling energised. Imagine you can funnel that feeling good and feeling energised into your work and to home schooling, into anything that you need to get done within your life. It can be really quite powerful.
Now the same study also found that when participants did a 10-minute brisk walk every day for three weeks or longer, the overall increase in mood and energy lasted all day. In addition, it improves bone health, burns calories, decreases depression, reduces stress and physical aches and pains. It also increases lung capacity and improves your gait and balance.
So that’s this week’s tip, but please do consider little pockets of movement. If you can get that 10-minutes of movement done and enjoy that increased mood and that increased energy. That’s it from me, stay healthy all the best for now.
In previous posts, I’ve talked a lot about minimal effective dose and I have also talked a lot about movement snacking, but let me share with you a study, which was conducted across a broad range of participants. What the study found was when participants did a 10-minute brisk walk a day, their overall mood and energy increased for up to two hours afterwards.Sothat’sa
What Are the Longer-Term Health Benefits of 10-Minutes of Movement?

Now I understand there’s nothing revolutionary about talking about movement for health and wellbeing. We know we need to do it. You’re probably struggling to find time to do as much exercise and movement as you’d like to do, but you don’t necessarily need to do a lot.

7pm – 8pm. The Writers Room is a new project from Walter Iuzzolino and Jo McGrath, co-founders of the global drama platform Walter Presents. We’re very happy to be hosting an event with their first two authors, Nicole Arend and JP O’Connell, who are both local to the Dulwich area, which will be chaired by Walter.
Tickets at: www.eventbrite.co.uk.
Wednesday 12 October:
Vamps: Fresh Blood by Nicole Arend is the first book in a trilogy set in an elite finishing school for billionaire vampires in Switzerland. It is a brilliantly entertaining, glamorous, and unputdownable read about very contemporary themes, such as the global excess of the wealthy elite at a time of dwindling global resources, while at the same time being a very personal coming of age narrative.

Hotel Portofino by JP O’Connell is a heady historical drama about a British family who open an upper-class hotel on the magical Italian Riviera during the 1920s. It is a story of personal awakening at a time of global upheaval and of the liberating influence of Italy's enchanting culture, climate, and cuisine on British ‘innocents abroad’.

Paying a lump sum into your pension
The answer to this is generally yes, especially if affordable. This may not be a priority for you if you’re younger, say in your twenties or early thirties. Increasing your contributions at a younger age would however have a greater impact on the end result than if you were older.
The other thing to check is that you don’t over contribute as there are annual limits to how much you may contribute to a pension in a tax year. This is known as the pension annual allowance.
Investing at regular intervals as opposed to all at once would however reduce the impact if the market fell. Whilst investing at regular intervals may be the lower risk option, markets tend to recover in the long term.
With Akwasi Duodu | akwasi@sterlingandlaw.com | www.sterlingandlaw.com
Putting a work bonus into your pension could also mean that you saved on tax and national insurance deductions, meaning you’d get to keep more of it in the long run. This boost together with the lump sum invested would be set to work immediately.Ultimately, the best option would be the one you could stick with. Both options would allow you to grow your pension pot in a tax efficient manner. A canny combination of both options could be the best way forward. If, however you’re paralysed with indecision, or need help determining how much you’d need to contribute, speak to an independent financial adviser.
had a workplace pension, your employer would have to contribute to your pension too. Your employer may opt to match your pension contributions. This top up to your pension is effectively a pay rise of sorts and worth having.
Which is best?
Investing a lump sum into your pension would potentially have the greater impact. This is because the entire sum invested would be set to work immediately. Conversely, a regular contribution would have to be fed into the market over a much longer period.
This all depends on your personal circumstances. If you found yourself with a sudden windfall such as an inheritance, a work bonus or tax refund, paying it into your pension plan would help you get closer to achieving your retirement savings goals.
Increasing regular contributions is more common than paying in a lump sum. Your employer may also match your contributions if you increased them via your workplace pension – but do check with them as most employers have limits.
Financial Matters
Either way, just make sure the amount you’re paying in doesn’t take you over your annual allowance, which is currently set at £40,000 per year, but might be less if you’re a higher earner or have already started taking money out of pensions savings.
Is it worth increasing my pension contributions?
Lump sum v regular pension contributions; which is better?
P
ension plans are one of the best ways to save for the long term. For starters, you get pension tax relief on your contributions. This means that you get a top up from the government, so it effectively costs you less to save more.
In addition to that, your pension contributions are typically invested for the long term in a portfolio of stocks and shares. Anything you pay into your plan has the potential to grow and benefit from compounding. Growth within a pension plan is tax

Cases of dog on baby attacks invariably report the baby was left alone with the dog. Ensure the dog is always supervised around your baby. NEVER leave them alone, not even for a second.
Don’t exclude the dog, only interacting with him when the baby is asleep. Do stuff with him and the baby together; build positive associations from the start. Here are simple games you can play to build the bond between dog and baby:
serotonin levels in dogs; get your dog in the mood to quietly chill by promoting a good chew habit. You’ll need time alone with the baby or to limit your dog’s access to baby. Use baby gates and tether stations to create safe areas for the dog to Makerelax.these safe areas pleasant for the dog. Behind a gate or on a tether he can still see you and the baby. he new baby is home and you are probably too elated or too tired to think beyond the bundle of joy now at the centre of your world. However, spare a thought for your dog who up until now thought he was centre of the universe. Getting a handle on the pooch perspective around baby arrival, will not only help you juggle the weight of new, daily demands, but will also ease the transition for your pet. Okay, so dogs don’t feel jealousy in the way humans do, but they are aware of losing something they value. Most dogs, selectively developed to be highly social, covet our attention above all. The usurped hound may react in surprising ways; barking, howling or sudden bouts of ‘naughtiness’. Changes can include outright disobedience; stealing forbidden items, and some dogs slump into a deep depression. No point getting angry, because as far as ‘bowser’ is concerned any attention is better than none.Last time we looked at preparation; introducing your dog to the new baby’s smell and baby equipment, as well as sharpening up basic obedience. If you managed these, the following steps will be easier. Your dog is learning about your baby and new things can be scary. Dogs may nip, or worse, out of fear. They may be triggered by noises to view the baby as a toy or prey.
Pets Corner with Leonie St Clair |
3) While holding or rocking the baby, have a small bag of kibble beside you. Toss out a kibble and wait until your dog eats it and comes back to you. Now wait for him to look at you and then throw out another bit. Repeat this, varying the duration of eye contact. Ask for ‘sits’ and ‘downs’ too. Obviously you cannot have your dog with you all the time. It is imperative he learns to switch off and relax in “safe” areas.
