HEALTH CARE CONCESSION

W

hen we meet with potential new clients and their family members, we of course, talk about the specific needs of the individual and share our knowledge and experience to ensure we provide the best care and support possible. We also see our role as helping clients understand what other services and financial help is available to them, especially important if they are new to home care. SMI – Council Tax Discount is one of the topics we share, and this potentially applies to tens of thousands of people who are entitled to a council tax discount and many people could be missing out due to a lack of awareness about the concession. It is available to those who are medically certified as being ‘severely mentally impaired’ (SMI). For example, this may be the case if they have dementia (including Alzheimer’s), Parkinson’s, severe learning difficulties or have had a stroke. It will depend on each individual’s case and simply having been diagnosed doesn’t automatically mean they qualify – a doctor must also certify they are severely mentally impaired. If someone is diagnosed as SMI they can be ‘disregarded for council tax purposes’ in England, Scotland and Wales. To qualify for the reduction, not only does the person have to be medically certified as being SMI, but they also must be eligible for – but not necessarily actually receiving – at least one of a number of benefits such as disability living allowance. It is important to point out that some councils wrongly tell people that need to be receiving such benefits, but that is not correct, the law simply states that you need to be eligible for them.

12 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

For example: A 100% discount – if they are diagnosed as SMI and live alone. A 25% discount – living with someone who’s SMI and no other adults, or only adults who have also been disregarded for council tax purposes, in effect a single person’s discount. No discount applies if living with two or more adults who are eligible to pay council tax. Guide to making a Claim Contact the local authority and request a claim form and register for a council tax discount. Obtain a doctor’s diagnosis, in some cases, the written diagnosis will need to be attached to the claim, others will ask for the doctor’s details and they will be contacted directly for confirmation. Evidence of eligibility for relevant benefits may also be required. The claim process varies by area, so we recommend seeking further advice from the websites below before submitting a claim. www.moneysavingexpert.com/reclaim/s evere-mental-impairment-dementia-counciltax-rebate/ & www.gov.uk/apply-council-taxreduction

BRAMHALL FESTIVAL SATURDAY 10TH JULY A fter last year’s cancellation, Bramhall Together Trust are delighted to announce

that the Festival will be back, on 10th July 2021. Bramhall Lane South will be closed on the day to make room for the Worker Bee Market where you can find stalls offering artisanal products ranging from pet accessories to lemon drizzle cakes and handmade notebooks to crocheted cuddly animals!

Sharing the space on the main road will be pop ups selling street food and drinks from many of Bramhall’s favourite bars and restaurants, not to mention of course the main stage, where the day’s entertainment will take place. At this year’s Festival Bramhall’s Got Talent will be back by popular demand, beginning at 10.30am. The stage will then host a fashion show and makeovers from 12.45pm before the musical entertainment begins at 2.15pm. This will climax

14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

with a return appearance by The Greatest Showman tribute act: A Million Dreams.

The Village Square will again be hosting a record and CD fair, which is under cover outside Jalfrezi/ Turquoise. This will also begin at 10:30m

Appropriately, given the year we’ve had, the theme of this year’s Festival is ‘Summer of Love’, and the organisers are hoping plenty of kids will dress up for the occasion and take part in the Hippy Parade which sets off from the stage at 2pm. For more information, visit the Bramhall Together Trust facebook page.

SUMMER FLOWER FORAGING FOR YOUR HOME

L

ots of us have recently been filling our plant pots with faux plants and stems and they’re a fantastic idea. Not as much watering, don’t require repotting and they do look fab. But it’s Summer, we’re out and about more in our gardens, woodlands and green spaces everywhere. I’m not the best gardener, if it looks pretty I keep it. There are orange and yellow flowers all around my little pond and it has to be said they’re invading spaces they’re not meant to, so I’ve picked them not for the bin, but plonked them into a jug in the kitchen and I love them. Lots of us have recently been filling our plant pots with faux plants and stems and they’re a fantastic idea. Not as much watering, don’t require repotting and they do look fab. Tall, willowy stems look good on their own, especially if you’re a minimalist kinda gal or guy. Move away your magazines and remotes on the coffee table for a vase of tall green leaves from the woods. Our ancient British woodlands are a fabulous place to forage. There are lots but wild garlic likes to grow in shady spots and is prolific in woodland with it’s pretty white flowers and lush green leaves, these can be eaten so try in some cooled boiled new potatoes.

16 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

Honeysuckle is a beautifully sweet smelling flower found climbing as tall as 6 metres, clinging on to trees to find the sun. They have a structural appearance in orange or red and make for a beautiful centrepiece. Add some greenery to give it a backdrop for your dining table. You don’t need to have a big stash of vases either. Lots of things you find around the home look very cool with plants in. Coffee tins to display in the kitchen, glass jars on the dining table, bottles in the hall, wicker baskets with stems gathered in the lounge, even tie up with string and hang anywhere. Something on its own or repetition works really well. Odd numbers of vases if they’re gathered together, like 3 of different heights together or in a row also works. Add a picture and a candle to create more texture and interest. Your bookcase can be a fabulous place for flowers, lie a few flat and pop a small vase on top. If you have children you could press some wild flowers and put them in a frame. Have some fun whilst getting some exercise and come back with some treasure.

Mindset Advice

REDEFINING TRANSFORMATION

A

s we move through the summer this year, there will be, as ever, many people in search of a physical (and possibly mental) ‘transformation’, and this is likely to be exaggerated this year after the lockdowns we have endured. Realistically, I believe that the vast majority of these people will NOT achieve ‘a transformation’. Yes, it is greatly desired, and yes, people are willing to put in some effort, but the reality is that people just don’t really believe that they are possible. Many people will live for most of their lives with a body and a lifestyle that they do not feel they have control over. People become resigned to the belief that they are enslaved by their impulses, cravings and destructive behaviours. This is reflected globally, whereby almost 70% of the developed world are overweight or obese, and locally, by the sheer volume of people I work with for weight loss or addiction each week. Of course, some people are genuinely happy, active and healthy in a plus size, but there are a great many more who desire change but cannot achieve it. Part of the problem is the gimmick of transformational change perpetuated by the world of celebrity. Too often well known people lose a vast amount of weight very quickly, before almost immediately starting to talk about their ‘secrets of weight loss’ on social media. These very ‘special and secret’ exercise routines and/or diets which (may or may not have) resulted in their transformation will soon be made available for everyone purely out of the goodness of their heart, oh, and just £99. Some people will buy it… and fail. Others will become annoyed by it and self-destruct yet more. Either way, it is damaging. The truth is, anyone can lose weight very quickly if the promise is great enough, and whether it is healthy or sustainable doesn’t come into it. Sadly, selling thousands of £99 programmes is more than enough of a ‘promise’ for many

18 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

celebrities to drop the pounds rapidly, but even more sadly, there is no such ‘promise’ for the end users of these programmes. Once the £99 is gone, the motivation soon follows as it becomes clear that rapid weight loss is only ever really possible by starving yourself and over training. So, what can we do about the unhelpful way that body transformation is packaged up and sold to the public? We can redefine it… as this. “Physical and mental transformation is achieved simply by making a few small manageable lifestyle changes and maintaining them consistently over a long period of time.” I know, it’s hardly ‘click bait’, but I am just not interested in rapid transformation. Albeit crude, the ‘easy off, easy on’ analogy usually holds. If something has changed too rapidly it is generally less sustainable. In my career, I have overseen several high profile and celebrity transformations, most recently Colson Smith (or Craig Tinker from Coronation Street), and you will not find any of my clients selling a quick solution to emulating their results. This is because there is no quick fix secret. Every one of the people I have worked with has followed the above approach, stuck with it for a long time and enjoyed sustainable results. Colson tells his story in a short YouTube documentary of his journey, which is, you guessed it, selling nothing. It is just an honest and inspirational story that has helped more people than any £99 programme ever has.

BACK TO THE OFFICE AND HOW READING THIS ARTICLE MAY MAKE YOU £124.80 BETTER OFF

O

n 23 March 2020 the Prime Minister addressed the nation describing the coronavirus as the biggest threat this country has faced for decades. He continued by saying that we should only leave home for very limited purposes including travelling to and from work, but only where this is absolutely necessary and cannot be done from home. And so it was that more than a year ago we fled our offices in droves, clutching laptops and spare screens as we exited our workplaces heading toward we knew not what. Working from home has given us all a new perspective on that work-life balance. There’s a new flexibility and perhaps the mind set of many bosses has changed forever. If the work has been successfully delivered and deadlines met then surely we can redefine how the future might look? It already feels old fashioned to waste time and burn fossil fuels to join the rush hour in order to work sat in the office, at a PC connected to the server, when that same connection can be made by a laptop from home. One thing to be aware of, is that an employee can claim tax relief for additional household costs that arise because they have had to work from home even for just a part of the year. (the claim can be made even if you are furloughed and did not work). We can each claim an annual allowance of £312, which is worth a minimum of £62.40 or £124.80 for basic and higher rate taxpayers respectively. You can claim this by either ringing HMRC or using the online portal that was created to deal with the demand. The claim can be made both for the 2021 tax year and the current tax year and therefore if you are eligible, your minimum tax saving will be £124.80. Company directors are possibly already making some claim via their own companies

30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

and so must check with their accountant first. We have been asked by clients who have businesses about possible tax relief on the installation of offices in gardens. Often there is a misconception that their company can fund everything and claim tax relief on the whole project. There is some tax relief that may be claimed, but only on some specific elements of the structure, such as electrics, plumbing, heating, shelving and office equipment. If there is any element of private use then we are in the realm of Benefits in Kind and P11ds, and an annual tax liability arising due to some personal use of your new ‘man or woman cave’ will be unwelcome news. At the moment, 21 June 2021 is slated for the conclusion of Social Distancing and all restrictions and therefore an easy day for the employer to mark on the calendar as ‘return to the office day’ for employees. But an employer has a duty of care towards all staff and must be flexible and take into account any concerns individuals may have and therefore there may still be some fluidity. We need to see our colleagues face to face, we need to mentor and support younger staff. Zoom and Teams have been excellent and have made video calls seem natural and a new part of doing business, but we need a mixture now, and I think we can all look forward to more flexibility around our office work. My concern is do I actually have a suit that I can fit into? Peter Bevan Bevan & Co, Chartered Accountants peter@bevan.co.uk

Health & Wellbeing

A

OSTEOARTHRITIS

rthritis affects around 10 million people in the U.K. Those suffering with the condition will often feel pain and stiffness around 1 or more joints as well as difficulty performing everyday activities. This can cause low mood and a feeling of isolation. There are a number of different forms of arthritis, including rheumatoid, psoriatic or reactive arthritis. In the majority of cases (around 8.5 million) people in the U.K. who are given the diagnosis of ‘arthritis’ have the condition ‘Osteoarthritis’. Osteoarthritis is characterised by ‘wear and tear’ in the joint(s) of the body through normal ageing, but it can be accelerated and come on earlier in life through heavy and repetitive overuse of these joints. Factors such as genes, weight and a history of injuries or accidents of the joint(s) can also lead to osteoarthritis. It most often affects hips and knees but spines, hands, wrists and ankles are also frequently problem areas. Wear and tear causes thinning of the discs or cartilage between the joint bony surfaces and subsequent friction. Pain, inflammation and bony deposits (osteophytes) resulting from this causes the surrounding soft tissue to shorten and the person reduces use of the joint. Although this might sound scary, there are many ways in which people with osteoarthritis can help themselves to lead an active life. Osteopaths can not only treat to ease the symptoms in the short term, but also create an action plan to keep you living a full and active lifelong term. Advice: NHS guidelines shows that, together with weight loss, pain medication (as appropriate) and exercise, Osteopathy, physiotherapy, and other

34 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

manual treatments including massage can improve joint range of movement (both of the affected joint and related joints), relieve pain, promote better blood flow to the joint, increase flexibility and improve quality of life for those with Osteoarthritis. Stay active - research shows that gentle encouragement or, even better, strengthening of the muscles around the joint can really help ease the pain and keep the joint mobile. Try to avoid exercise or activity which puts a lot of weight through the arthritic joint. For example, swimming or cycling are preferable over running if you have knee or hip arthritis. Stretching helps to keep the muscles supporting the arthritic joint(s) supple and mobile. Stay positive - research shows that quite a number of people with arthritis showing on XRays or MRI scans are completely free of symptoms. Inspired by the 1940’s

S

ummer is here and let’s celebrate with some cool, sunbathing garments. This summer’s fashion is inspired by much of the 1940s fashions. Synched at the waist, fluffed up sleeves and a nice, smart skirt, or baggier trousers. Dresses with tiered dress are very much in and are so simply made, provided you can sew a straight line. The measurements below, are that you need for a tiered skirt, and the beauty of it is, you just need to adjust the numbers to suit your shape. I suggest grabbing an old, or unloved sheet and having a go (or you can rip the one of the bed right now! Go crazy! It’s summer!). Upcycling and repurposing has never been so popular.

How to make a tiered skirt. You will need your 1m 150cm fabric and 4cm wide elastic for your waist. Cut these rectangles on a folded cloth (I have used measurements for the National average - Size 16) Tiers are cut Height by Width Tier 1 35cm by 50 cm Tier 3 20cm by 60 cm Tier 4 35cm by 70 cm 1 - Sew the sides of Tier 1, 2 and 3 to make 3 rings. 2 - On Tiers 2 and 3, run a hand sewn running stitch along the top edge. You will pull this to create a gather so make sure your stitching is strong. (I use extra strong thread or 2 threads). 3 - Fold the top tier down 1cm, press and another 5cm. Leave and opening in which you will insert elastic to fit around your waist 36 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2021

measurement (plus a little to sew the elastic together. Make sure you sew the casing closed when you’ve inserted the elastic) 4 - Now pull the gathering thread on Tier 2 to match the bottom of Tier 1. Pin these together and sew. This is where you can be adventurous. Your seam can be on the outside to give a raw, unfinished look. It’s very much in and very much ‘now’. 5 - Repeat this with Tier 3 and on Tier 3, hem the bottom to suit, so try it on and make sure you’re happy with the length. Now run, free and frolicking in the fields, and have some summery fun. You can make the tiers shorter, and less gathered for children. Have a Mum and Me matching outfits with your little one. For those of you fancying making some cargo shorts or pants, also very much in, why not have a look at my Youtube channel for the tutorial on how to take your own measurements and cutting out a pattern yourself. It’s quick and easy and the zip fly is nowhere near as tricky as the Great British Sewing Bee makes out. Even I can do it, so it can’t be that bad. See you next time, have a fabulous summer, and don’t forget the Factor 30, it’s going to be a hot one. Improve your Balance & Flexibility with Pilates

R

egardless of age keeping fit is essential. But so many forms of exercise can be hard on the bodies of older adults. Many have turned to Pilates sessions as a way to stay in shape while reducing the risk of injury that some weight-bearing exercises may cause. Pilates focus on controlled breathing and quality of movement, not quantity of repetitions. Pilates is one of the best ways for older adults to stay healthy because it does not have the impact on the body that other forms of exercise do, and is not nearly as severe on the joints as most workouts are. If you’re an older adult and haven’t exercised in a while, Pilates is a safe way to restart a workout program. Most conventional workouts tend to build short, bulky muscles more prone to injury–especially in the body of an older adult. Pilates focuses on building a strong “core”–the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Many of the exercises are performed lying on a mat or in sitting positions, and most are low impact and partially weight-bearing. It also can positively affect postural positions.

Increased Stability and Balance Having good balance is the key to all functional movement and activities we do every day, such

as walking and going up and down the stairs. Pilates focuses on movements at the centre of the body instead of the extremities (arms and legs), where the potential for injury is greater. Pilates teaches control and stability in a small range of motion, graduating to a larger range of motion as they gain control and confidence. Increased control and stability is crucial for older adults as it can help them improve much of their functional movement, including balance and posture. “As people get older, they can lose some of their balance and coordination. Pilates increases strength and flexibility in both the core and the legs, which positively affects balance. This, along with basic fitness benefits, can help reduce the risk of falls. Pilates is also a good way to rehab from surgical procedures like a hip replacement or knee surgery.”

Can implants be an option for you? This was a recent case that we completed where we gave our patient the ability to chew and smile with confidence. The patient attended with failing upper teeth that were loose and infected. These teeth were removed and 4 implants were placed. These implants were then used to support a fixed bridge. This enabled the patient to chew without struggling and to smile with confidence with teeth that were setup to create a natural look. If you would like to know about which options may be available to you please give us a call or if you would like to explore more treatments similar to this, please call Jane on 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free non-obligation consultation
