Welcome to SK Bramhall & Woodford Welcome to the July / August issue of SK Bramhall & Woodford. I thought it might have been a bit early with the flip flops front cover, but with the current weather, we might just have got it spot on! Here’s to a great sunny summer.
This month Interior Design page 12
As it is July that must mean it’s Bramhall Festival time again. So, make a date in your diary (Saturday 9th July) to come into the village and support all the local businesses and charities. Full details on page 10. Also, we have another date to remember with the circus coming to the village. The Bramhall and Woodford Rotary Club and The National Festival Circus the Big Top will go up in the Walled Garden in Bramhall Park on Sunday the 21st August. Full details on page 34. We have four pages of events in and around the area along with two pages of Children’s Activities, to help get you out and about within the community. Remember if your club or group is looking for more members, drop me an email and I’ll do my best to spread the word. Grab yourself an ice cream and enjoy the read. Cheers

BATHROOM DESIGN
emodelling your bathroom can seem a complicated task for often the smallest room in the house, but worry not! It’s definitely manageable and so worth the work as it’s one of the rooms we visit the most in the home. Set a budget, if you don’t know where to start with this then trawl the internet for designs that you like and make some notes. There are so many different styles to choose from. The bathroom is where you can make an impact with unusual materials if you like, gorgeous lighting and great design ideas. Calculate costs for the sanitaryware including the toilet, basin, bath and shower, whether that’s a shower cubicle, over the bath or wet room style. Look at tiles, here is where you can use clever ideas to help with the budget. Tiling the entire room including the floor, or tiling just the bath and basin area can make a huge difference to the price of tiles and the tiler. Simple rectangular shaped metro tiles can be configured in different ways for a modern look, there’s a surge in herringbone style flooring at the moment and this pattern looks fantastic on the wall. There are plenty of paints for the other areas specifically made for bathrooms to prevent peeling. If you’re pushing the boat out there are some amazing tiles that look divine, giving it a purely luxurious and boutique hotel feel. You can make a statement with wall lights either side of a mirror or hanging down. My tip for this is to look in reclamation places for old
boat lights – if they’re good enough for a boat on the sea, they’re good enough in a bathroom. Alternatively leave the light where it is and just replace the fitting. Then the labour is where a lot of the costings are but if you replace like for like without moving everything around, this saves money. If you’re looking for more of a complete change, even knocking walls down or cupboards out then this is extra labour and materials so adds to the cost. There’s an order to putting the bathroom back together, get this the wrong way round and it can lead to a poor finish or worse, having to re-do parts of the renovation. When I’m remodelling a bathroom for a client, I will usually employ the services of the tradespeople separately to save on costs, whilst applying my trade discounts to items to obtain the best finishes and ideas within budget. Let me know if I can help, Sharon.

STOCKPORT HISTORICAL SOCIETY This photograph was taken sometime before the Station Road alignment works took place in the early 1960s. The main feature is one of Lane End farm’s large barns which were situated on today’s site of the Majestic Wines outlet which backs onto the original line of Station Road. Just visible on the far right of this photograph you can see the gable of a row of cottages which have now been converted into the Inventory bar. Lane End farmhouse was just

THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING HYDRATED
D
rinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being wellhydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. It is especially important during the summer months. This can be a challenge for most of us but for some older adults and those with Dementia it can be harder to effectively manage. Why keep hydrated? The body is made up of roughly 60% of water which is needed to enable the brain and body to function effectively. Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because your body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, it’s important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. Being properly hydrated is also needed for some medications to work effectively. What can happen when dehydrated? Being dehydrated can have serious health implications in older adults and those with Dementia. It can increase UTI’s (Urinary Tract Infections), impair our thinking, change our mood, cause dizziness and can increase the instances of falls. Sometimes dehydration can lead to hospitalisation and decrease the effective function of organs in the body such as the kidneys.
14 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2022
Signs of dehydration. Added confusion and delirium Dry lips Headache Dizziness Dark coloured, strong smelling urine Weakness Here are some tips to increase fluid intake, particularly helpful for those with memory loss 1. Always have a drink close by at mealtimes and throughout the day 2. Add to water rich foods to meals and snacks, such as courgettes, cucumber and melon 3. Tea, coffee, squashes and fruit juices can also aid hydration 4. Some people prefer hot drinks to cold or the other way around, experiment with beverages at different temperatures, why not try an iced tea or coffee 5. Try smoothies, sports drinks, milkshakes and flavoured water, or even adding fruit to flavour plain water 6. Use visual aids as reminders to add fluid intake - pictures of a glass of water/cup of tea with a specific time next to it are helpful For more information visit www.nhs.uk

Why quirky Cheshire finds, gold, jewellery and silver could unleash an auction windfall this summer Never dismiss anything – that’s the golden rule I’ve learned in nearly 20 years in the auction business. And that golden rule applies to the people of Cheshire. It’s easy to dismiss an item, simply because you can’t imagine it could be of significant value. I was reminded of this when the press picked up on an auction find that astonished us all. A pair of strange-looking denim dungarees with something resembling a frill round the waist – bought for £5 in the 1970s - made £9,000 at This denim outfit, made for the 1977 Star Wars film, sold for auction. £9,000. Our client picked them up at a clothing sale in Camden, London, more than 40 years ago and thought they might make a fun fancy-dress outfit. They turned out to be a costume made for the first Star Wars film in 1977. The clothing label bore the provenance - the name of actor ‘Joe Kaye’ and ‘Star Wars’. Kaye played a Lutrillian in the movie. Another label stated, ‘Bermans & Nathans, 40 Camden Street, London NW1’. They were legendary costume designers. With buyer’s premium and VAT, the total paid by an American The striking handle of a Far buyer was £12,456. Eastern serpentine dagger Quirky finds often delight which sold for £1,000. at auction - and help to fuel the nation’s obsession with antiques and collectables. To offer further examples, a 19th Century, possibly earlier, Far Eastern serpentine dagger with a striking ivory-carved figure handle made £1,000 from an estimate of £140-£160. Equally unusual was a knitting sheath, the end carved as a whale and inlaid decoration.

This 19th century English work of art was a fine example Early 19th century knitting sheath of innovation in the sold for £360. knitting industry, invented to speed up the traditional craft. It realised £360 – double its £100-£150 estimate. Another lot to surprise was a collection of 10 assorted vintage oil cans which sold for £1,200. There must be countless items like these stuck in Cheshire drawers, garages or attics. So, if the sun is lighting up forgotten corners of your home, do delve. And if you find gold, coins, jewellery, silver or vintage designer watches you truly have uncovered buried treasure. Auction prices are booking for these items. Recent sales saw a diamond Lot 200, a diamond and 18ct gold and 18ct gold solitaire solitaire ring, sold for£2,000. ring reach £2,000; a 9ct gold cigarette case by Charles Green & Co, Birmingham, 1933, make £1,450 and a Chinese 800 grade silver serving tray sell for £1,300. econd week of June saw the Captain’s events here at Bramhall Golf Club with the Lady Captain’s Day taking place on Thursday and the Men’s 36-hole Captain’s Event taking place over Saturday and Sunday. The Course was in fantastic condition over the week and the competition was played over the newly WHS rated Championship Orientation.
After Day 1 the lead was tied with a great score of 66 (4 under Par) from Shaun McCumskey off a handicap of 7 and Liam Mann with a handicap of +2. Incredible scoring in the wind on Saturday. Paul Barnie and Richard Green also both had very respectable nett scores of 67 and 68 respectively.

The overall winner was Lady Captain Day Winner Sue Syder (pictured) with a superb 1 under par net score of 72 just pipping Caroline Perry with a net score of 73 The annual chipping competition played on the Friday evening was won by no other than our resident House Chairman Mr Steve Sheard. This competition raises funds for the Captain’s charity and so this year we raised £113 for St Ann’s Hospice.

The scores through the field showed that some great golf was played over the weekend with tricky wind conditions and Mr Captain said in his newsletter “I cannot put into words how much I enjoyed this weekend.” Well done to all competitors over both events this week!
ADVERTORIAL
Pat Marriot (Lady Captain) said she had a fantastic day. She and the ladies partied into the evening on Thursday and a great night was had by all.

Summer Recipe
Apple and Lardon Galette
I have just come back from a road trip through Spain and France and among several very memorable meals (and some I’d rather forget) was a delicious galette that I had in Brittany. I thought it would make an excellent easy lunch for the summer months – and indeed it does – my husband loves it. You can buy pancakes in most supermarkets but they aren’t as thin as the Breton galettes – you can get them on line though. Apple Sauce – makes enough for 4 galettes 1 Bramley apple peeled, cored and cubed 1 Braeburn apple peeled, cored and cubed 1 knob of butter Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the apples and a dash of water. Cook over medium until the Bramley goes mushy but the Braeburn has still some lumps. Take off the heat and set aside 1 galette 100g lardons (smoked) Grated Comte cheese 26 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2022
Fry the lardons until cooked. Put the grill on high and but the galette on a plate. Smear some apple sauce over the galette and top with the lardons and some grated cheese. Put this under the grill for about a minute until the cheese melts a bit. Take from under the grill and fold over four corners of the galette to make a square. Put more grated cheese on top and return to the grill for a very short time until the cheese melts. It burns quickly so beware. Using gloves take the plate to the table to serve – it’ll be really hot.
Serve with a green dressed salad and you’re good to go. A decent cider is good with this.

Mindset Advice
HOW TO BE BODY CONFIDENT THIS SUMMER As the summer approaches, it is traditionally the time when people start to worry about their physiques and how they look generally. Having worked in the wellness industry for over 12 years now, I am often met with comments such as “I should have lost more weight”, “I wish I had worked out more”, “I can’t go to the beach looking like this”. In all my years experience however, and having seen thousands of clients in that time, I have worked with every single body shape and every single type of person. The most important observation from this, that I often find myself saying is that, “someone’s body shape or size is mutually exclusive to how they feel about it” I.e. how someone looks has absolutely no bearing at all on how they feel about their body. To put it one more way, body confidence is all about how you feel inside and nothing at all about how you actually look. Another important factor in body confidence is to remember that everyone else is thinking far more about their own body and how they look than about your body and how it looks! Dale Carnegie said it best in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People; “Humans are selfish, proud and egotistical creatures. People are not interested in you… they’re interested in themselves”. This is certainly not to say that humans are unkind and don’t care about others at all, it is just the observation that humans are fundamentally self interested, so we ought not worry as much about what others think about us, because they probably don’t care as much as we think. This notion should allow you to relax and enjoy yourself more, whatever you are doing. My final observation is that, having worked with people of all ages, the most common regret in later life is not making the memories that
28 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2022
could’ve been made because people were too worried about what other people thought. Not going to the beach or the pool, not wearing the dress or the suit, not wearing a bikini or swimming shorts, not getting up to dance at the party because of heightened self-consciousness and generally being too concerned about what others may think... To paraphrase, one of the biggest regrets of people in later life is that they cared too much about what other people thought about them throughout their lives and therefore didn’t live life to it’s fullest. So, the three golden rules: 1. You will never have the exact body you would design, you probably don’t even know what that would look like, so start to love the body you have, whatever it looks like. 2. Remember humans are fundamentally self interested, so people care much more about how they look than how you look, so give yourself a break and stop breathing in. 3. Take any opportunities that present themselves to you (if you genuinely want to) and never let worries about what other people may think about you stop you doing anything at all, ever. I appreciate that the above information and opinion may not give you instant confidence, but confronting these truths is certainly the first step in building that confidence and starting to live life as wholeheartedly as you possibly can.

Health & Wellbeing
RELIEVE THAT UNWELCOME TENSION W hether you are back working in the office full time, working from home, or mixing it up we all spend a lot of time siting looking at computer screens, tablets or phones – it’s become part of our working and daily lives. This technology brings lots of advantages but along with it are often some unwelcome niggly aches and pains. Here are some mini exercises, stretches and self massage tips for you to help relieve that unwelcome tension.
Sit comfortably with your back supported against the back of the chair, feet firmly on the ground and hands and arms open and relaxed. 1. With a deep breath in (through nose), raise the shoulders towards the ears and hold them raised for a few seconds. Then slowly breathe out (through mouth) and drop the shoulders. Repeat several times. 2. Place your left hand on your right shoulder. Squeeze gently and then release. Repeat down the right arm to the elbow. Repeat several times. Place your right hand on your left shoulder and repeat the exercise. 3. Place the fingers of both hands at the base of your skull; apply slow circular pressures down the base of the skull to the base of the neck.
30 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2022
4. Facing forward tilt your chin to your chest and ‘draw’ a smile on your upper chest with your chin turning your head from one side to the other very slowly gently stretching and releasing tension in the back of the neck and upper shoulders. 5. Now close your eyes and relax your face muscles. Be aware of your eye muscles, your jaw and your forehead. Place the fingers of both hands on each side of the temples and slowly massage in a circular motion. Repeat several times. 6.Finish by cupping your hands over your eyes and holding for several seconds, helping to relieve tension and tightness in the face and around the eyes. Pop this page of SK Magazine on your desk next to your laptop so you don’t forget!

“DAYLIGHT ROBBERY”
I
– a quick history lesson looking at the collection of taxes
n these articles a lot of mention is given to the different taxes rather than the administration behind their collection, so I decided to look at the institution tasked with that job. Her Majesty’s Revenue and Customs (HMRC) was formed by the merger of the Inland Revenue and Her Majesty’s Customs and Excise in April 2005. HMRC says of itself “we are the UK’s tax, payments and customs authority“….”we collect the money that pays for UK’s public services and help families and individuals with targeted financial support.” It was Gordon Brown in his 2004 budget who announced the merger. HMRC is a non-ministerial government department responsible for the administration and collection of taxes, excise duties, national insurance, the enforcement of the National Minimum Wage, the administration of antimoney laundering as well as the distribution of Child Benefit, the Child Trust Fund and payments of Tax Credits. The protection of our borders was passed to the UK Border Agency in 2008 and then to UK Border Force and the National Crime Agency in 2013. People sometimes still lazily use the name Inland Revenue which was the government department responsible for collecting taxes from 1849 to 2005. The Inland Revenue was itself formed from a merger of the Board of Excise and the Board of Stamps and Taxes, with the latter dating back to 1665 and established out of the necessity to pay for the second Anglo-Dutch war which raged between 1665 and 1667. The Board of Taxes refined a version of Land Tax and levied Window Tax for the first time in 1696. Perhaps falsely credited with the saying “daylight robbery”, window tax was a tax based on the number of windows in a house and incredibly was applied for over 155 years. The
32 | SKBramhall & Woodford - July/August 2022
tax was sophisticated enough to have had a flat rate element per house as well as a variable element for the number of windows above ten in the house. At that time, income tax was still regarded as intrusive and had even been discarded between 1816 and 1842 after public protest; and so a tax system based on something that could be counted from the street was regarded as the solution. Over time the window number bandings changed, and there were higher rates of tax for those houses with more than 20 or more than 30 windows. Today we can still see bricked up windows in older houses which is a good example of tax avoidance in action. Other taxes which might seem amusing to us now include Male Servants tax (1777-1852), Hair Powder Tax (1795-1869) and Clocks and Watches tax (1797-1798) which was hastily repealed within a year after almost ruining the industry manufacturing them. A tax levied based upon how many clocks and watches you owned was not the smartest idea but shows a fundamental early desire for taxes to be progressive and based on the taxpayer’s ability to pay. The modern HMRC has a broad remit and one of its five objectives is to “support wider government economic aims through a resilient, agile tax administration system.” That really is a challenge in our fast paced technological and everchanging society. Welcome to the summer and it’s the festival season
T
he UK will be back to enjoying a summer of festivals and sporting events all over the UK and I am looking forward to running 10K at Tatton Park this summer. I’ll be making my pink leggings for the Tickled P!nk campaign and CapesThorne Hall will be hosting an 80’s inspired summer blast with a rewind back to a time of big hair, vibrant colours and leotards of fun. Stretch fabric is considered possibly one of the most obnoxious fabric to sew and when you are wanting to create athletic wear, stretch dresses and beachwear for the summer, there’s nothing more frustrating than dealing with fabric that just won’t cooperate, so today I’m giving you my top tips for the best way to avoid throwing that machine on the junk pile. First of all, let’s talk about knits and stretch, two very different fabrics when it comes to sewing. Knits: Knits stretch because of the way it’s created. Think about a warm fabric, made from cotton and on close up (zoom in with your camera phone) looks just like the form of a knitted jumper. It’s a looser weave than stretch fabric and the fibres seem a bit thicker. Stretch fabrics: These tend to be fabrics that have a luster; your Lycra’s, spandex, scuba and Elastane. You’ll find these make up your sports wear and dance costumes. They look and feel a little more silky than knits. Top Tip 1 - Needles With these two different fabrics, you’re going to o want one of two different needles. Knit fabrics call for a ballpoint needle (sometimes called a jersey needle) and stretch fabrics require stretch needles. Confusing, but that’s the way industry have labelled them. Important to note, the needles have different tips. A stretch needle is pointier than a ballpoint, but still has a rounded tip. These needles miss the loosely spun fibres, but the stretch needle, with a sharper point, can stitch into the tighter fabric better.

Use the wrong needle and you Will find your machine is struggling, or at the very least, skipping stitches. Top Tip 2 - The Right Stitch A straight stitch is no good, when pulled (think about the stress applied on the seam when you sit down) the thread breaks, seams pop, and you’re in an unfortunate pickle. A zig zag stitch (green) creates a concertina effect, it can stretch and the zigzag will get wider and accommodate the pull on the seam, but it’s still not quite the right stitch to use. It is better to identify the right stretch stitch (red) if your machine has the option and create a stronger hold, with a good stretch so you can really go to town dancing at festivals or lounging on the beach this summer. Note: These can be tricky to unpick if you go wrong, so use a wider and longer stitch length if your machine allows. Do I need an overlocker or a coverstitch machine for stretch fabric? No. You really don’t but if you do, it’s handy but they bring their own problems. It’s all about knowing how to use the tools you have. Unfortunately, people really misunderstand their machines and upgrade in hopes they will find that one true goblet of success. There is no perfect machine and the most basic machine, if it has a zig zag stitch, will do the work admirably. So read your manual, take your time and enjoy, I hope you found the tips helpful and lookout for my videos for more support on my channel. Have a festive summer and enjoy the sun! What are the Benefits of Pilates?
P
ilates is a low-impact form of exercise that combines deep breathing with gentle stretching to boost strength, balance, and mobility. Workouts target your “powerhouse” your abs, lower back, pelvic floor, hips, and glutes. Founder Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara developed it to help World War I soldiers restore their inner strength (both literally and figuratively), and millions of practitioners worldwide swear by its mind-body benefits to this day. In Pilates the quality of movement is more important than the quantity of repetitions. Correct breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress. Pilates exercises will help you develop a strong “core,” or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Pilates improves flexibility and increases muscle strength and tone, it also improves concentration, body awareness and stress management. Arguably the most important health benefit received from Pilates is all about good posture and the calming self-confidence boost that comes with it. What Pilates classes are there? Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles.

High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. It was Joseph Pilates who said: “true flexibility can be achieved only when all muscles are uniformly developed.” So rather than saying you can’t do Pilates because you are not flexible enough, you should actually participate in Pilates exercises to improve your flexibility. Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so join a Pilates class now! - Your smile is our reputation -
CHURCH ROAD DENTAL BECOMES CHEADLE HULME DENTAL & COSMETICS end of April, we moved into a brand new building, situated AWesttonthebank Station Road in the heart of Cheadle Hulme. It used to be a Nat and stands directly opposite Cheadle Hulme train station. Renovations on the building began back in August 2021, and it’s been a hectic nine months, transforming it from a derelict, run down space with just one floor, into the beautiful two storey dental practice we have now. We boast a stunning patient lounge which is a comfortable place to relax whilst waiting for your appointment. Here, you will find our refreshments area where you can help yourself to a variety of coffee, teas and water. In this space, you will also find our swanky new reception area, complete with backlit branding and ultra-modern lighting. It also features the LED light panels in the ceiling which you’ll find in every room throughout the practice. Our two consultation rooms scream luxury and are impressive places to discuss your perfect smile with our smile advisors. Finally, our state-of-the-art treatment rooms are where the magic happens!
