TOP BEDROOM STORAGE IDEAS

As I write this, the housing market has a huge supply and demand problem. Usual amount of demand, not enough supply. That means that, for the moment, we’re all staying put. Perhaps it’s the unusual times we’re living in, perhaps we want some stability right now, whatever it is, it means that we need our homes to work for us now more than ever. Our bedrooms, no matter what our age, should be a calming and beautiful sanctuary. Now, how can that be the case if every time you open a cupboard you’re met with an avalanche of ‘stuff’? Clothes for every eventuality of our British weather, odd shoes, bedding, jewellery, the vacuum! You name it, we squeeze it in. Don’t worry, in my experience of working with people in their homes, this is just about everybody. There’s never enough space (it’s definitely not that we have too many clothes) (or shoes!). There are easy and practical solutions. I don’t mean just throwing a load of shelves up from a well known Swedish home store that will look generic and fall apart quicker than a wet Digestive. It can be stylish and a gorgeous addition to your bedroom décor. Behind your bed is a missed opportunity. People may hang a picture but moving the bed out just a few inches or more if you can spare it, creates a large, shallow surface area. Sliding doors and shelves, perfect for books, jewellery, make up etc. The top can hold your lamp, books, perfume etc. The fronts can be panelled, painted plain or stencilled. There are lots of good stencils on the market that are easy to use. Another very simple and massively missed opportunity is the bedside table. Traditionally it’s a small unit, one drawer that holds, well, rubbish really along with your bedtime reading, pop your lamp on top and that’s it. Replace it with a small sideboard and voila, you have tons of room. Take a look around at what is going for a small price and repurpose it, paint, take a door off, or have something fabulous made to measure. Either will look fantastic and be much roomier. One of my favourites for a mountain of extra storage is a high shelf. They don’t take anything off the room as they’re way above the eye-line. You can use pretty boxes, not too many of these or they look cluttered. Just putting all of your books up there will look like a library for tall people. Break it up, add vases, plants and picture. Colour co-ordinate things to add interest, use string lights to draw attention to something, use different levels with a taller picture frame, a few books, next to a hanging plant.
