Welcome to the April / May issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. As we are going to print the country is still in a state of shock regarding the coronavirus outbreak. We thought long and hard about printing and distributing this months’ issue, but took the decision that our advertisers need the continuity of the magazine to help keep their businesses afloat. We know many businesses will be affected but our hope is that by publishing this issue, we can help in some small way. With events changing daily we have taken the decision to replace the dated events with a couple of useful pages that might help in these very challenging times. We have included our weekly/monthly events. However please do check whether these are going ahead. From our sister publication we have an article “Six tips to help you through uncertain times” from Toni Horton. Well worth a read and may help to allay some fears. Page 34.

At times like this we do all need to help each other if we can, so when I saw this leaflet which you can fill in and pass on to your neighbours, offering your help, I thought maybe it could be copied or torn out of the magazine. You may know people on your street who are struggling and this is a handy way of introducing yourself if you don’t already know each other, see page 18.

Welcome - Page 3

Finally, please listen and follow the advice we are being given by our Government and their medical team. If we all play our part, hopefully, we will come through the other side very soon.

Ways to keep your spirits up

t’s often said that that during winter it’s not unusual to feel a bit blue, especially when it is harder to get out and about and enjoy the outdoors. So, with Springtime upon us we should now be looking forward to the longer evenings, warmer weather and therefore feeling much brighter. However, for those in our community who are not always able to get out and about, Age UK have some tips and ideas to beat the blues whatever the time of year.

Stay connected Try to keep to your usual routine as much as possible. If you can’t visit friends or family, phone them, use email or try video call services like Skype or FaceTime. If getting out and about is difficult or you don’t have anyone to connect with why not check to see what support is available locally? Both Stockport and Cheshire councils have events and activities that cater for all ages, including older adults.

Do something you enjoy every day. Settle in with a favourite book or audio book. Do a puzzle in the paper or online. Try your hand at painting, pick up a bit of knitting or tune into an afternoon radio play. Find something that makes you feel good and make time for it.

Keep moving Being active – even just a little bit – is proven to help give you boost. A quick walk down the street, dance around the kitchen or satisfying stretch in bed or a chair are all good pick-me12 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

ups.

Have a natter A regular chat with a friend can make a huge difference to how we feel. We can share stories, catch up on the latest news and even have a bit of a moan when we need to!

Don’t ignore your feelings If you’ve been feeling down for a while and it’s stopping you from doing the things that matter, making you feel listless or like you don’t have any energy, you don’t have to suffer in silence. Share how you’re feeling with a friend, family member or doctor. There’s help out there if you feel you need a little more support. It has long been said that by helping others it makes us happier. By reaching out to those in our community who our vulnerable we can help rekindle neighbourly spirit, reduce social isolation and even prevent illnesses. And probably lift our spirits too!

Pork and Prunes

his used to be my signature dish when I first got married. I had forgotten all about it until I re-discovered it in this version by Rick Stein. I have to say my original was far, far too sweet but this is absolutely perfect. Make sure you use the best pork you can buy (definitely not from Denmark – they treat pigs appallingly) it makes a difference. I’ve used Iberico pork from Spain where they happily graze on acorns and slowly grow fat and delicious – buy it online from Basco Fine Foods. Serves 4 30g butter 2tsp vegetable oil

Heat half the butter and oil in a frying pan and brown the pieces of pork for 1 or 2 minutes and set aside (don’t overcook them or they will go cardboardy). In the same pan add the remaining butter and fry the shallots until softened (not browned). Add the cognac and cook until the liquid is reduced by half. Add the cream, chicken stock, jelly, prunes and thyme and cook for a couple of minutes before putting the pork slices and any juices back into the pan. Season with salt and pepper and cook for a further 3 or 4 minutes by which time the pork will be cooked through. (Again don’t overcook) Remove the thyme sprigs and sprinkle in the chopped parsley.

700g pork fillet – trimmed of sinew and then cut into 10cm rounds

Serve with mashed potatoes or rice.

2 banana shallots

Yum.

60ml Cognac 150ml double cream 250ml chicken stock 2tsp redcurrant jelly A few thyme sprigs Handful of pitted prunes Handful of flatleaf parsley Salt and pepper

FED UP WITH CLUTTER? NEED MORE STORAGE SPACE?

Have you ever looked around your home and thought “’arghhh we could do with more space?” or are you about to have a tidy up but don’t want to throw everything out? Well, the answer could be to make more use of the space you’ve already got, literally under your own roof. For many home owners, the loft is an underutilised area because it can be difficult and dangerous to reach. Macclesfield based loft ladder installer, Access4Lofts, whose slogan is ‘Creating Space The Easy Way’ can change all that, often in less than a day. Access4Lofts Macclesfield is owned by Barry Johnson. Much of the work he carries out is for growing families “I know how crucial storage space can be for large families” says Barry. “I also find that a large percentage of my clients are retired people looking for the safest access to their loft available.” Barry says that with space at such a premium, it makes sense to make the most of your loft “installing a loft ladder is quick and affordable. It’s less expensive than a garden shed and it means you don’t have to store everything out of the house.” Access4Lofts provides a free survey and quote service so you can find out what is achievable with your loft area. For the full works, customers can get a retractable 3-section ladder, a new hatch, a floating

22 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

floor over the loft insulation and lighting. Some homeowners who perhaps inherited an old loft ladder, may want to consider an upgrade as in many homes the loft hatch and ladder are out of date compared to what’s on offer now “the new ladders are spring-assisted and lighter so they’re much easier to use” he says “the ladders can also come with a safety handrail and there is an option of wide-tread wooden steps. There’s really no need for anyone to be struggling in and out of the loft anymore.” Freeing up a room currently clogged with clutter can save a lot of trouble and expense, as Barry explains “some people looking for more space consider moving to a bigger home but this needn’t be necessary. People are surprised by the amount of space a loft can create we can even include shelving to maximise the space.” Access4Lofts is an approved Which? Trusted trader which means they have been accessed by Which? and passed their stringent checks. For added confidence, Access4Lofts has full public liability insurance and all ladders and work carried out comes with a Lifetime Guarantee. To find out how Barry can create more space for you and your family, or to book a free survey and quote, visit www.access4lofts.co.uk/macclesfield or give Barry a call on 01625 839259, alternatively follow us on Facebook.

Still trading and on trend after 30 yearS. H

ere at Crissan we are very proud to be still trading and on trend after 30 years. Over those three decades we have overcome many challenges and gone from strength to strength. Where at the beginning we used to source garments locally, reduced availability meant that we had to start forward buying at the big trade shows six months ahead. The opening of the Handforth Dean shopping centre 20 years ago faced us with us potentially serious competition, so had to stock items that were different from those in the major department stores just a short distance away.

Our next challenge was the arrival of the internet and the popularity of shopping online but we’ve survived that too. With my 30 years experience of knowing what my customers want, we too have embraced new technology and built up a customer base of over a thousand whom we email weekly with photographs of our new arrivals and details of special promotions and offers. Over the 30 years we have extended our premises twice - firstly upstairs; then three years ago we decided to extend to the rear, which has given us a spacious showroom that includes accessories such as handbags, shoes and scarves, on-the-spot alteration service and free parking to the rear. Most important of all, my loyal team of staff are both knowledgeable and friendly and we hope to carry on for many more years to come.

Employment status matters – the IR35 looming panic

he off-payroll working rules (often known as IR35), have been in place since 2000 to ensure fairness between individuals who work in a similar way. They are designed to make sure that an individual who works like an employee, but through their own limited company, pays broadly the same Income Tax and National Insurance contributions as ‘regular’ employees. The rules do not apply to the selfemployed. n Shifting responsibilities! – From 6 April 2020, in an attempt by HMRC to increase compliance with the existing off-payroll working rules, medium and large organisations in all sectors of the economy will become responsible for assessing the employment status of individuals who work for them through their own limited company. n What does this mean and who is affected? Individuals supplying their services through an intermediary, such as a personal service company (PSC), and who would be employed if engaged directly. Recruitment agencies and other intermediaries supplying staff through personal service companies (PSCs). Medium and large-sized organisations outside the public sector that engage with individuals through PSCs. n What is a medium or large client/engager? – A medium or large-sized organisation will have a turnover of more than £10.2million, a balance sheet total of £5.1m and/or more than 50 employees. n Small clients/engagers are unaffected – but beware the Public Sector! - Engagements with small organisations outside the public sector are exempt, which the HMRC argue will minimise the administrative burdens for the vast majority of businesses. All public sector organisations will continue to make determinations as now. n Status Determination Statement – If you are affected, the organisation you are providing your services to will determine your employment

26 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

status for tax purposes from 6 April 2020. Your hirer will give you a ‘Status Determination Statement’, which will set out the determination your hirer has made and the reasons behind this. You may be asked to provide the hirer with some information to help them make their determination. n Where the rules do apply – If they determine that you are employed for tax purposes, they (or the agency they have hired you through) will pay the necessary tax and National Insurance before they pay you. If they determine that you are self-employed for tax purposes, you will remain responsible for meeting your tax obligations via your PSC. n Right to appeal – The Government has introduced a statutory, client-led status disagreement process to allow individuals and fee-payers to challenge the organisation’s determinations n HMRC Status checker – HMRC has already developed the online Check Employment Status for Tax (CEST) service to help organisations determine whether the off-payroll working rules apply. n Will I be investigated by the HMRC if I change status? – The HMRC has stated that organisations’ decisions about whether workers are within the rules will not automatically trigger an enquiry into earlier years unless there is reason to suspect fraud or criminal behaviour. Surrounding this impending legislation is a great deal of business anxiety coupled with the real possibility that workers’ net income will be markedly reduced. Watch for further updates!

The latest in cutting edge hearing technology Many people will have come across the term wearable over the past few years - this is short for wearable technology which may include smart jewellery such as watches and smaller devices - hearing aids which typically work in coordination with a Smartphone app for display and interaction. In 2019, Starkey Hearing Technologies introduced Livio® AI - the first hearing aid to track body and brain health, with artificial intelligence at the heart of its technology. It’s many features and technologies work seamlessly together to help patients proactively manage their wellness, enhance their listening experience and track important health data. It also has the ability to translate 27 languages, is able to connect to a variety of mobile devices and is also the best sounding hearing instrument that Starkey have ever produced. These technological breakthroughs haven’t gone unnoticed, in November 2019 TIME magazine announced the list of best inventions in the accessibility category a widely recognized and prestigious designation, this list highlights inventions that are making the world better, smarter and even a bit more fun. Starkey’s Livio AI hearing aid was recognised by TIME as one of the 100 groundbreaking inventions that are changing the way we live, work, play and think about what’s possible. Starkey are continually pushing the boundaries of AI and what hearing technology can do for those with hearing impairment. In January 2020 they announced the launch of Livio Edge® AI, the world’s first hearing system to be custom made in-ear with an integrated rechargeable battery and Bluetooth connectivity.

Fast Fashion and Sustainability

W

rap is an independent charity, set up to measure the Waste and Resources in the UK. The Action Programme looks at how products from food to clothes is manufactured used and disposed of, taking into account the carbon dioxide emissions and our water footprint. The UK’s textile industry created a staggering 24 million tonnes of CO2e in 2012 (see wrap.org. uk) and a four year initiative designed to drive manufacturers as well as consumers, that’s you and me, to do better to improve our carbon footprint. In 2016, four years later, that number changed and sadly, not for the better, but it actually increased to 26.2 million tonnes. Crazy! Social media is riddled with vloggers and bloggers up cycling and recycling and making efforts to improve this number, however, Wrap suggested the number may have increased due to fast fashion’s pressure to decrease prices to move fashion even quicker. The UK’s 2017 landfill contribution amounted to 300,000 tonnes of clothes. That’s a staggering amount of clothes. How much of that could have been donated, recycled or upcyled? The guesstimating is that each item of clothing purchased is worn on average 7 times before thrown in landfill and summer holiday clothes, possibly just worn once. What can we do to help this pollution and waste? Wrap created SCAP; a group of signatories which includes manufacturers and consumers; pledging to do our bit to help reduce the pollution and waste. Marks and Spencer’s pledged to sell cotton textiles made purely from fair-trade, organic or recycled sources by 2019. Tesco’s and Sainsbury’s by 2020. So, look at how your clothes are made and where. Love and care for your clothes. Reducing waste in washing by reducing the temperature of the washing water and use less soap in the wash. Understand how to care for them, learn how repair them if needed.

The only Vintage charity shop in the UK is on our very own doorstep. You can find Barnardo’s Vintage on Cheadle High Street. The store is filled with vintage goodies, so much so, television producers have popped in to make large wardrobe purchases. You might even spot some of your donated items on Call the Midwife. Charity shops are great source for fabrics and sewing goodies, especially some items you might recognise from your Nan’s sewing tin (which we always hoped there’d be biscuits in as, falsely, stated on the lid). So as wedding season approaches and we are all looking at preparing for this festive time. Look to re using wedding dresses and promoting a vintage affair. Pay homage to generations before, respectably wearing the beautiful gowns you can find in charity shops. There’s nothing more romantic than a wedding that has a little eccentricity and that eclectic style to show a personal warmth. Sterile, commercial dresses produced quickly have no flair, they leave a tacky flavour and show no flair or imagination. Before Queen Victoria introduced the fashion of a white wedding gown (white as a symbol of her status), and like many cultures still, the bride’s wedding gown was the good gown. It was the one dress a bride would own and saved for special occasion. It did not sit wrapped up and saved in a box for ever. Dresses were colourful and came in many different styles. Let’s make a change, wear something awesome at your wedding, break from that old cliché white dress, grab something vibrant and so very you. Let it be worn many times and enjoyed every time. https://www.facebook.com/AbisSewingDen/ @Abis.Den http://abisden.blogspot.co.uk

Take Empowerment not Excuses from Human Evolution Around 70% of the developed world is overweight or obese. Human evolution can be used either as an excuse for this or to empower us to become part of the 30%.

Evolution as an excuse Millions of years ago, early human descendants needed to move for about 19 miles a day to secure food, over approximately 14-16 hours. Homo species were also nomadic, so would frequently move the entire tribe miles for safety or increased foraging possibilities. In today’s world we do next to no exercise at all, because we don’t ‘need’ to. Exercise wasn’t a choice in our distant past it was a survival necessity, if we had the option to rest and conserve calories we would have done! So it’s little wonder now that we choose not to move most often. Food was pretty scarce too on the whole, and hard to come by; foraging was tricky, and hunting took great skill and a great amount of calories to succeed at. When high calorie food was found or hunted, such as nuts, seeds, or meat, it was highly valued as it gave our brains a big hit of dopamine (a pleasure response) to ensure we wanted to repeat the behaviour. Those with the best fat storing genetics would then have been best set to survive periods of scarce food. So, basically, being alive today means we are the descendants of those best at fat storing, and those who sought most voraciously, the highest calorie foods. We are literally designed, instinctively, to seek out high calorie food and to store fat whenever there is a surplus. Apply that to the current developed world, where in the last 50-60 years, high calorie food has become abundant, and you can see why around 70% of the developed world has become overweight or obese in that exact time frame... It is not fat or sugar that are to blame, it is both!

Evolution as empowerment Interesting as this is... the very fact I CAN explain it to you and you can understand it, is the very 32 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

reason why you can, and you must rise above it. You see, alongside the above, humans have evolved a far more complex brain than any other species. We have the ability to solve complex problems, to judge right from wrong, to interpret emotions and to act with tact and caution where needed. This can be called ‘consciousness’. We set ourselves apart in almost every way from all other species, who are either wholly or majorly instinct driven, so why should our food and activity patterns be any different? Just because we have evolved to instinctively seek out and store high calorie foods and to do as little exercise as possible, doesn’t mean we have to succumb to this. Our ancestral past is rife with murder, destruction and violence and we’ve managed to use our consciousness to regulate this via civilised society (the remnants of this instinctive behaviour can be found in jails across the world), so lifestyle must be similarly regulated. The high profits associated with junk food, drinks and poor health (drugs and medical procedures) sadly mean that resolution is unlikely to come from government level, so it is left to us as individuals to take the necessary action. We need to seek and to find what works for us health wise, and to do it, not just what we instinctively want to do. We can no longer use our instincts and desires rooted in human evolution as an excuse, we are better than that, and we have to be if the species is to continue to survive.

Six Tips To Help You Through Uncertain Times With Toni Horton - Life Strategy Coach | tonihorton.com

I

don't have to tell you that we are living in very weird times right now. Things are changing every five minutes and it's very disconcerting. Uncertainty fuels anxiety and when things come out of the blue like this, we are not prepared for the amount of upheaval we are going to feel and we are not always sure what we need to do, in this case because it is completely unprecedented, for us and for the wider world. Worry and anxiety can be very similar feelings but the basic difference is worry normally takes place when something is actually happening, when you know what you are dealing with and you can start to plan how you are going to respond. Anxiety is fear of the future, in a nutshell the unknown feeling about what might happen, how big it might get and what are the repercussions. This is what a lot of people are currently experiencing. Even if you are not normally an anxious person, It feels like a lot is going on right now and it's very easy to get pulled along with the collective fear that is surrounding us. I just want to share a few quick tips with you to help you look after your mental health, as when something like this outbreak happens, it's so easy for us to feel that everything is out of our control and that's when we can become very anxious.

1) Tune Into Official News Channels We know that there is a lot of incorrect information about coronavirus out there right now. When you are on social media it's very easy to start out watching a fluffy kitten video and suddenly you are clicking on all kinds of links, each one with a worse headline than before. Switch off your notifications so that you don't get bombarded and only stay up to date with the main news channels, they will carry all the latest guidelines and you can trust that the information has come from a good source.

2) Unfollowing People On Social Media It's not just the media sites that can trigger anxiety, it's certain individuals. They might be family, friends, colleagues or random people that you follow. They might be talking in a way that you feel uncomfortable with so do not feel bad about unfollowing them. Instead find some uplifting accounts that help you feel calmer and more in control of your situation.

3) Boundaries As much as the news is changing every five minutes, it doesn't mean that we have to talk about every little detail constantly. If you are finding it hard to listen to somebody going on and on, don't be afraid to ask them if you can talk about something else. Or leave the conversation if that's preferable to you.

4) Understand Fear Everybody is different and everybody deals with fear in different ways. We all react differently some people panic through fear in order to feel safe, hence the current panic buying of the pasta and toilet rolls and some people minimise and that is how they feel safe, they make light of the situation and can almost appear to be in denial.

5) Sit With Uncertainty This is the hard bit if you haven't done it before. Sometimes we have to learn to live with uncertainty, we can't always know the outcome and we can't always choose the outcome. Very much like living with illness or going through a relationship breakdown, the outcome is not always ours to decide. What we can do in this instance is work out what we can control, in order to feel as strong as we can. For this outbreak, we can decide to follow all of the health instructions that are accessible to all of us, like proper handwashing etc. And as further measures are introduced, we can take back the control by taking action to implement those measures, knowing that we are doing all we can.

6) Seek Help If you already have an anxiety condition or maybe OCD that's being triggered by the news or if you don't but you are finding the news just too overwhelming, do reach out for support. Decide where you need that support to come from, work out whether you want to see a professional or whether you want to speak to a trusted friend who you know to be supportive. These are just a few tips to help you feel more in control and a bit stronger about the situation. Please know you are not alone in this and it's definitely not silly or a sign of weakness to be worried about this.

A Comfy Corner.. How To Get The Look

e would all love to relax in a comfy chair, a place that’s calling us to sink into, somewhere to rest after a busy day. Maybe there’s a space bookmarked for this very job but it has ironing, lego or a dog there now. Reclaim it and rebrand it. Firstly, unless you’re used to lots of colour, go with a more neutral palette, by not choosing the accent colour in your room, it feels more restful, more trusting for your weary self. Let’s be honest, you might love your bright yellow lamp and cushions, but relaxing and bright yellow aren’t a pairing I’d usually pick. Choose the room carefully, a perfect corner in your entrance hallway may look great, but if the window cleaner/ neighbour/children can’t help but see you there I’d find another corner. Maybe your bedroom, the lounge, sun room, there’ll be a quiet(er) corner just right for you. You may need to hide that ironing or relocate the dog but that’s a winwin in my book. Next, let’s see what you have in your home that you can use. Your basic requirements if you look at all of these images are a chair or love seat, with or without a footstool, a lamp and a side table, but if the chair is to go next to some existing shelves it will be fine without a side table. Make sure that these are all items you love, this is a corner for you, don’t make do.

36 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

If you need something new take time to find something that speaks to you and it will look great. The neutral chair must be comfy, layers and textures are key. If it’s a cold day a soft throw will look great and feel lovely to snuggle under. Use cushions for texture and interest and to prop your head or feet on. The side table can hold your favourite books and magazines, a candle, a picture or two and maybe a lamp. You may choose a floor standing lamp that arcs over with a warm glow. Add a mirror or some art, choosing one large piece makes an impact or if you prefer a gallery wall for interest go for that, it’s all about you. We must look after ourselves before we can look after others. We hear it often but do it less. Here’s an opportunity for a few minutes a day to relax and think of what you need. Happy choosing your pieces, if you need help let me know. If you put this together and it makes you smile, you’ve cracked it.

Pilates for Horse Riders

o ride effortlessly requires strength, balance and control. To control your horses’ movement you need the ability to move your body correctly and effectively from your pelvis. You also need suppleness to move with your horses’ movement. So many riders spend countless hours schooling their horses and fixing their imbalances, but don’t look at themselves. Horse and rider are a combination. In order for the two of you to shine you need to start taking care of your own health and fitness as well. When training off the horse, you need to look at your body as a whole. It’s not just about fitness or strength exercises, it’s also about breath, body control and how flexible you are in the right areas. Looking at the principles of Pilates it is easy to see how these can be adapted to the requirements needed to be an effective and competent rider. Pilates will teach you better body awareness and more control over your body Alignment – Alignment when riding has a huge impact on your horse’s way of going. If your body is misaligned your weight will be heavier either from side to side or front to back with detrimental affect to your horse’s way of going. You need to think of your pelvis, ribcage & head as building blocks which need to be stacked up over one another for correct alignment. If these boxes are out of alignment your weight will be focused more over one side of the horse.

40 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - April/May 2020

Breathing – Breathing the Pilates way, deep and wide into the back of the rib cage helps to increase fresh oxygen into the system and strengthens the abdominals. It is important to learn to breathe properly and to exercise the lungs fully. Learning to breathe properly helps you to remain calm and tension free, thus promoting free flowing movements. Centring (Core Stability) This is the ability to maintain control of the pelvis, spine, and shoulders. Think of your core stablising muscles like the core of an apple, running through the entire length of our spine, from our pelvis to the centre of our head. When riding you need to be able to go with the movement of your horse, to remain toned & balanced. Engaging your core muscles will help you to absorb the movement and keep good alignment. So whether you ride for pleasure or have a desire to compete professionally Pilates is a must for all horse riders.
