Welcome to the August / September issue of SK Cheadle Hulme & Cheadle. I hope you are enjoying this summer. As I write this, the UK is currently hotter than Barcelona and the Balearic Islands, so don’t forget the sun lotion, keep in the shade, and stay hydrated! Talking of keeping hydrated, Karen Perry has written a very informative article in her regular column “Community Care”. Page 14.
This month
Summer Recipe
Apple and Lardon Galette
Food & Drink Page 38
I have just come back from a road trip through Spain and France and among several very memorable meals (and some I’d rather forget) was a delicious galette that I had in Brittany. I thought it would make an excellent easy lunch for the summer months – and indeed it does – my husband loves it. You can buy pancakes in most supermarkets but they aren’t as thin as the Breton galettes – you can get them on line though. Apple Sauce – makes enough for 4 galettes
Plans to create a new railway station, eco business park and improved walking and cycling routes in Cheadle have been given the green light after the Government approved the £13.9million funding as part of the Towns Fund scheme. See this months “Community News” for the full details. Page 16. We have four pages of events in and around the area along with two pages of Children’s Activities, to help get you out and about within the community. Grab yourself an ice cream, keep drinkingß the water and enjoy the read. Cheers

1 Bramley apple peeled, cored and cubed
Fry the lardons until cooked. Put the grill on high and but the galette on a plate. Smear some apple sauce over the galette and top with the lardons and some grated cheese. Put this under the grill for about a minute until the cheese melts a bit. Take from under the grill and fold over four corners of the galette to make a square. Put more grated cheese on top and return to the grill for a very short time until the cheese melts. It burns quickly so beware. Using gloves take the plate to the table to serve – it’ll be really hot. Serve with a green dressed salad and you’re good to go. A decent cider is good with this.
1 Braeburn apple peeled, cored and cubed 1 knob of butter Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the apples and a dash of water. Cook over medium until the Bramley goes mushy but the Braeburn has still some lumps. Take off the heat and set aside 1 galette 100g lardons (smoked) Grated Comte cheese

Why quirky Cheshire finds, gold, jewellery and silver could unleash an auction windfall this summer Never dismiss anything – that’s the golden rule I’ve learned in nearly 20 years in the auction business. And that golden rule applies to the people of Cheshire. It’s easy to dismiss an item, simply because you can’t imagine it could be of significant value. I was reminded of this when the press picked up on an auction find that astonished us all. A pair of strange-looking denim dungarees with something resembling a frill round the waist – bought for £5 in the 1970s - made £9,000 at This denim outfit, made for the 1977 Star Wars film, sold for auction. £9,000. Our client picked them up at a clothing sale in Camden, London, more than 40 years ago and thought they might make a fun fancy-dress outfit. They turned out to be a costume made for the first Star Wars film in 1977. The clothing label bore the provenance - the name of actor ‘Joe Kaye’ and ‘Star Wars’. Kaye played a Lutrillian in the movie. Another label stated, ‘Bermans & Nathans, 40 Camden Street, London NW1’. They were legendary costume designers. With buyer’s premium and VAT, the total paid by an American The striking handle of a Far buyer was £12,456. To offer further examples, a 19th Century, possibly earlier, Far Eastern serpentine dagger with a striking ivory-carved figure handle made £1,000 from an estimate of £140-£160. Equally unusual was a knitting sheath, the end carved as a whale and inlaid decoration.

It realised £360 – double its £100-£150 estimate. Another lot to surprise was a collection of 10 assorted vintage oil cans which sold for £1,200. There must be countless items like these stuck in Cheshire drawers, garages or attics. So, if the sun is lighting up forgotten corners of your home, do delve. And if you find gold, coins, jewellery, silver or vintage designer watches you truly have uncovered buried treasure. Auction prices are booking for these items. THE IMPORTANCE OF KEEPING HYDRATED
D
rinking enough water each day is crucial for many reasons: to regulate body temperature, keep joints lubricated, prevent infections, deliver nutrients to cells, and keep organs functioning properly. Being wellhydrated also improves sleep quality, cognition, and mood. It is especially important during the summer months. This can be a challenge for most of us but for some older adults and those with Dementia it can be harder to effectively manage. Why keep hydrated? The body is made up of roughly 60% of water which is needed to enable the brain and body to function effectively. Your body uses water in all its cells, organs, and tissues to help regulate its temperature and maintain other bodily functions. Because your body loses water through breathing, sweating, and digestion, it’s important to rehydrate by drinking fluids and eating foods that contain water. Being properly hydrated is also needed for some medications to work effectively. What can happen when dehydrated? Being dehydrated can have serious health implications in older adults and those with Dementia. It can increase UTI’s (Urinary Tract Infections), impair our thinking, change our mood, cause dizziness and can increase the instances of falls. Sometimes dehydration can lead to hospitalisation and decrease the effective function of organs in the body such as the kidneys.
14 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
Signs of dehydration. Added confusion and delirium Dry lips Headache Dizziness Dark coloured, strong smelling urine Weakness Here are some tips to increase fluid intake, particularly helpful for those with memory loss 1. Always have a drink close by at mealtimes and throughout the day 2. Add to water rich foods to meals and snacks, such as courgettes, cucumber and melon 3. Tea, coffee, squashes and fruit juices can also aid hydration 4. Some people prefer hot drinks to cold or the other way around, experiment with beverages at different temperatures, why not try an iced tea or coffee 5. Try smoothies, sports drinks, milkshakes and flavoured water, or even adding fruit to flavour plain water 6. Use visual aids as reminders to add fluid intake - pictures of a glass of water/cup of tea with a specific time next to it are helpful For more information visit www.nhs.uk

NEW STATION FOR CHEADLE
P
lans to create a new railway station, eco business park and improved walking and cycling routes in Cheadle have been given the green light after the Government approved the £13.9million funding as part of the Towns Fund scheme. After two and half years of hard work, the Cheadle Town Board is now celebrating securing the £13.9m of the Government’s Towns Fund for three transformational projects in Cheadle. Top of the list is the approval of funding for a new rail station at Cheadle. This is a landmark moment and follows on from extensive consultation with the local community, the wider public, businesses, and many partners in the rail industry. The Station will be complemented by a strategic north- south cycling and walking route that will link Cheadle to its High Street and the proposed station. Also, as part of promoting green growth, Cheadle will benefit from Towns Fund cash to support the development of a new Eco Business Park on Bird Hall Lane. This will provide new opportunities for businesses and job growth housed in modern high quality industrial units

using state of the art eco technology to minimise its carbon footprint and to generate local energy. Sharon Seville, Interim Chair of the Cheadle Town Board said “We have worked tirelessly to bring this investment into Cheadle to help release its fantastic potential. There are still more hurdles to jump but we are all looking forward to the delivery of these game changing projects over the coming years. I am especially excited about the opportunities a new eco business park will bring to the borough and the sustainability template that it could set for future developments.” Leader of Stockport Council Mark Hunter added: “The Council, has supported these projects from the off, and it is great to see that we can start to turn plans into reality. I see these projects as benefitting the whole of Stockport for generations to come.” Mary Robinson, local MP, also on the Board, enthused “This is a great day for Cheadle and it’s fantastic to have secured this funding from the Government. A new station will plug Cheadle into the public transport network and help to address local congestion. I’m so pleased that the Station can now start to be brought forward”.

They offer a community and acute service to all children between birth and 16 years old (18 years if still under the care of a paediatrician) and 24-hour hospital based care to sick children who need assessment or admission for either unplanned illness or for planned surgery or investigations. Last year proved very popular and was a huge success. We hope you can come and join us again this year.

Mindset Advice
HOW TO BE BODY CONFIDENT THIS SUMMER As the summer approaches, it is traditionally the time when people start to worry about their physiques and how they look generally. Having worked in the wellness industry for over 12 years now, I am often met with comments such as “I should have lost more weight”, “I wish I had worked out more”, “I can’t go to the beach looking like this”. In all my years experience however, and having seen thousands of clients in that time, I have worked with every single body shape and every single type of person. The most important observation from this, that I often find myself saying is that, “someone’s body shape or size is mutually exclusive to how they feel about it” I.e. how someone looks has absolutely no bearing at all on how they feel about their body. To put it one more way, body confidence is all about how you feel inside and nothing at all about how you actually look. Another important factor in body confidence is to remember that everyone else is thinking far more about their own body and how they look than about your body and how it looks! Dale Carnegie said it best in his book How to Win Friends and Influence People; “Humans are selfish, proud and egotistical creatures. People are not interested in you… they’re interested in themselves”. This is certainly not to say that humans are unkind and don’t care about others at all, it is just the observation that humans are fundamentally self interested, so we ought not worry as much about what others think about us, because they probably don’t care as much as we think. This notion should allow you to relax and enjoy yourself more, whatever you are doing. My final observation is that, having worked with people of all ages, the most common regret in later life is not making the memories that
20 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
could’ve been made because people were too worried about what other people thought. Not going to the beach or the pool, not wearing the dress or the suit, not wearing a bikini or swimming shorts, not getting up to dance at the party because of heightened self-consciousness and generally being too concerned about what others may think... To paraphrase, one of the biggest regrets of people in later life is that they cared too much about what other people thought about them throughout their lives and therefore didn’t live life to it’s fullest. So, the three golden rules: 1. You will never have the exact body you would design, you probably don’t even know what that would look like, so start to love the body you have, whatever it looks like. 2. Remember humans are fundamentally self interested, so people care much more about how they look than how you look, so give yourself a break and stop breathing in. 3. Take any opportunities that present themselves to you (if you genuinely want to) and never let worries about what other people may think about you stop you doing anything at all, ever. I appreciate that the above information and opinion may not give you instant confidence, but confronting these truths is certainly the first step in building that confidence and starting to live life as wholeheartedly as you possibly can.

CRICKET CLUB BEER FESTIVALKNOCKS COVID FOR SIX AND RETURNS FOR BANK HOLIDAY
T
he August Bank Holiday weekend sees the Woodford Cricket Club Beer Festival back in action after two years of absence due to Covid restrictions. So beer lovers put Friday 26th to Sunday 28th August in your diaries for great ale and a chance to meet friends old and new.
Said Club President, Simon Elms “We are absolutely delighted to be back. The Woodford CC Beer Festival has become an important part of our calendar. It helps club funds, but also plays an important role in us being part of the community and welcoming people who might not otherwise visit a cricket club. There will be cricket played on both the Saturday and Sunday afternoons of the weekend. So please come and see us, enjoy some excellent beers and have a great time.” Joe Clinch, Patrick Meese and Bobby Hassard
The event has grown in popularity since it began in 2012 and this year there will be a minimum of sixteen different real ales, including four from headline sponsor Bollington Brewery, who have supported the event since its inception with the provision of a bar, cooling equipment and help to set-up.. Non beer drinkers are catered for too, with a range of ciders and gins. Wines will also be available by the glass and for hungry drinkers there will be a range of different foodstuffs available on each day.

Health & Wellbeing
RELIEVE THAT UNWELCOME TENSION W hether you are back working in the office full time, working from home, or mixing it up we all spend a lot of time siting looking at computer screens, tablets or phones – it’s become part of our working and daily lives. This technology brings lots of advantages but along with it are often some unwelcome niggly aches and pains. Here are some mini exercises, stretches and self massage tips for you to help relieve that unwelcome tension.
Sit comfortably with your back supported against the back of the chair, feet firmly on the ground and hands and arms open and relaxed. 1. With a deep breath in (through nose), raise the shoulders towards the ears and hold them raised for a few seconds. Then slowly breathe out (through mouth) and drop the shoulders. Repeat several times. 2. Place your left hand on your right shoulder. Squeeze gently and then release. Repeat down the right arm to the elbow. Repeat several times. Place your right hand on your left shoulder and repeat the exercise. 3. Place the fingers of both hands at the base of your skull; apply slow circular pressures down the base of the skull to the base of the neck.
30 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
4. Facing forward tilt your chin to your chest and ‘draw’ a smile on your upper chest with your chin turning your head from one side to the other very slowly gently stretching and releasing tension in the back of the neck and upper shoulders. 5. Now close your eyes and relax your face muscles. Be aware of your eye muscles, your jaw and your forehead. Place the fingers of both hands on each side of the temples and slowly massage in a circular motion. Repeat several times. 6.Finish by cupping your hands over your eyes and holding for several seconds, helping to relieve tension and tightness in the face and around the eyes. Pop this page of SK Magazine on your desk next to your laptop so you don’t forget!

IS YOUR BUSINESS ONE OF THE THOUSANDS OF COMPANIES ELIGIBLE FOR R&D TAX CREDITS BUT NOT CLAIMING IT?
H
MRC provides Research and Development (R&D) reliefs to support companies that work on innovative projects in science and technology. There are four basic but powerful questions which will provide the fundamental insights required to assess your project’s eligibility to make a claim: n What is the scientific or technological advance? n What were the scientific or technological uncertainties involved in the project? n How and when were the uncertainties actually overcome? n Why was the knowledge being sought not readily deducible by a competent professional? If your company is taking a risk by attempting to ‘resolve scientific or technological uncertainties’ then you may be carrying out qualifying activity including creating new products, processes or services and changing or modifying an existing product, process or service. If you are not sure if your project can succeed, or you don’t know how to achieve it in practice, you may be resolving technological uncertainties and be carrying out qualifying R&D without realising. Within the government’s accepted research and development definition, your R&D does not have to have been successful to qualify for financial assistance. This list is far from exhaustive, but the typical qualifying costs for R&D include staff salaries along with NIC and pension costs; the costs of subcontractors and freelancers working on the project and some types of software. R&D tax credits are calculated based on your R&D spend. To make an R&D credit calculation, you need to identify qualifying expenditure and enhance it by the relevant rate (see below). This determines your ‘enhanced expenditure’. When
32 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
you deduct your enhanced expenditure from your taxable profits, or add it to your loss, the result is: n a Corporation Tax reduction if you are profit-making. n a cash credit if you are loss-making. n or a combination of the two. SMEs are able to claim up to 33p for every £1 spent on qualifying R&D activities. Your R&D expenditure already typically attracts corporation tax relief as part of the normal operational costs of your trade. Your R&D tax credit claim then allows a further 130% of this eligible R&D expenditure to be deducted when calculating the taxable profits of your company’s trade. R&D tax credits applied to profitable businesses, reduce their Corporation tax bill. The rate of relief is 25%. So if your R&D spend last year was £100,000, you could get a £25,000 reduction in your tax bill. Loss making businesses receive their R&D tax credit by direct payment because they do not have a tax liability to offset. The rate of relief is up to 33%. So if your R&D spend last year was £100,000, you could get a £33,000 payment from HMRC. This is a complicated area, and as a result many companies that are entitled to make a claim, either may not even know about the reliefs available or assume that they would not meet the criteria. If you think your business may apply then you should speak to your accountant.

This competition raises funds for the Captain’s charity and so this year we raised £113 for St Ann’s Hospice.

The overall winner of Richard, Captain, Liam and Shaun the two-day Captain’s event was day one’s winner Shaun McCumskey who managed a two-day total of 137 (3 under par) which pipped Gareth Bradley who produced a score of 138 (2 under par) over the weekend. Welcome to the summer and it’s the festival season
T
he UK will be back to enjoying a summer of festivals and sporting events all over the UK and I am looking forward to running 10K at Tatton Park this summer. I’ll be making my pink leggings for the Tickled P!nk campaign and CapesThorne Hall will be hosting an 80’s inspired summer blast with a rewind back to a time of big hair, vibrant colours and leotards of fun. Stretch fabric is considered possibly one of the most obnoxious fabric to sew and when you are wanting to create athletic wear, stretch dresses and beachwear for the summer, there’s nothing more frustrating than dealing with fabric that just won’t cooperate, so today I’m giving you my top tips for the best way to avoid throwing that machine on the junk pile. First of all, let’s talk about knits and stretch, two very different fabrics when it comes to sewing. Knits: Knits stretch because of the way it’s created. Think about a warm fabric, made from cotton and on close up (zoom in with your camera phone) looks just like the form of a knitted jumper. It’s a looser weave than stretch fabric and the fibres seem a bit thicker. Stretch fabrics: These tend to be fabrics that have a luster; your Lycra’s, spandex, scuba and Elastane. You’ll find these make up your sports wear and dance costumes. They look and feel a little more silky than knits. Top Tip 1 - Needles With these two different fabrics, you’re going to o want one of two different needles. Knit fabrics call for a ballpoint needle (sometimes called a jersey needle) and stretch fabrics require stretch needles. Confusing, but that’s the way industry have labelled them. Important to note, the needles have different tips. A stretch needle is pointier than a ballpoint, but still has a rounded tip. These needles miss the loosely spun fibres, but the stretch needle, with a sharper point, can stitch into the tighter fabric better.
36 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
Use the wrong needle and you Will find your machine is struggling, or at the very least, skipping stitches. Top Tip 2 - The Right Stitch A straight stitch is no good, when pulled (think about the stress applied on the seam when you sit down) the thread breaks, seams pop, and you’re in an unfortunate pickle. A zig zag stitch (green) creates a concertina effect, it can stretch and the zigzag will get wider and accommodate the pull on the seam, but it’s still not quite the right stitch to use. It is better to identify the right stretch stitch (red) if your machine has the option and create a stronger hold, with a good stretch so you can really go to town dancing at festivals or lounging on the beach this summer. Note: These can be tricky to unpick if you go wrong, so use a wider and longer stitch length if your machine allows. Do I need an overlocker or a coverstitch machine for stretch fabric? No. You really don’t but if you do, it’s handy but they bring their own problems. It’s all about knowing how to use the tools you have. Unfortunately, people really misunderstand their machines and upgrade in hopes they will find that one true goblet of success. There is no perfect machine and the most basic machine, if it has a zig zag stitch, will do the work admirably. So read your manual, take your time and enjoy, I hope you found the tips helpful and lookout for my videos for more support on my channel. Have a festive summer and enjoy the sun! Summer Recipe
Apple and Lardon Galette
I have just come back from a road trip through Spain and France and among several very memorable meals (and some I’d rather forget) was a delicious galette that I had in Brittany. I thought it would make an excellent easy lunch for the summer months – and indeed it does – my husband loves it. You can buy pancakes in most supermarkets but they aren’t as thin as the Breton galettes – you can get them on line though. Apple Sauce – makes enough for 4 galettes 1 Bramley apple peeled, cored and cubed 1 Braeburn apple peeled, cored and cubed 1 knob of butter Melt the butter in a saucepan and add the apples and a dash of water. Cook over medium until the Bramley goes mushy but the Braeburn has still some lumps. Take off the heat and set aside 1 galette 100g lardons (smoked) Grated Comte cheese 38 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022

BATHROOM DESIGN
emodelling your bathroom can seem a complicated task for often the smallest room in the house, but worry not! It’s definitely manageable and so worth the work as it’s one of the rooms we visit the most in the home. Set a budget, if you don’t know where to start with this then trawl the internet for designs that you like and make some notes. There are so many different styles to choose from. The bathroom is where you can make an impact with unusual materials if you like, gorgeous lighting and great design ideas. Calculate costs for the sanitaryware including the toilet, basin, bath and shower, whether that’s a shower cubicle, over the bath or wet room style. Look at tiles, here is where you can use clever ideas to help with the budget. Tiling the entire room including the floor, or tiling just the bath and basin area can make a huge difference to the price of tiles and the tiler. Simple rectangular shaped metro tiles can be configured in different ways for a modern look, there’s a surge in herringbone style flooring at the moment and this pattern looks fantastic on the wall. There are plenty of paints for the other areas specifically made for bathrooms to prevent peeling. If you’re pushing the boat out there are some amazing tiles that look divine, giving it a purely luxurious and boutique hotel feel. You can make a statement with wall lights either side of a mirror or hanging down. My tip for this is to look in reclamation places for old
40 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
boat lights – if they’re good enough for a boat on the sea, they’re good enough in a bathroom. Alternatively leave the light where it is and just replace the fitting. Then the labour is where a lot of the costings are but if you replace like for like without moving everything around, this saves money. If you’re looking for more of a complete change, even knocking walls down or cupboards out then this is extra labour and materials so adds to the cost. There’s an order to putting the bathroom back together, get this the wrong way round and it can lead to a poor finish or worse, having to re-do parts of the renovation. When I’m remodelling a bathroom for a client, I will usually employ the services of the tradespeople separately to save on costs, whilst applying my trade discounts to items to obtain the best finishes and ideas within budget. Let me know if I can help, Sharon.

Garden Talk
Plants adapted to climate change
W
ith summers generally getting hotter, it makes sense to use plants in the garden that once established won’t need regular watering. Beth Chatto’s gravel garden and the RHS Hyde Hall’s dry garden, both in Essex, are fantastic examples of drought-tolerant planting. This kind of planting is especially useful in front gardens that get watered less, or south facing gardens. Drought-tolerant plants often originate from hot, dry environments and have adapted in different ways to cope with the conditions. They also tend to like welldrained soil, so add grit or sand to clay soils. Grey or silver-leaved plants conserve water by reflecting the sun. Stachys byzantina (Lamb’s ears) with its woolly silvery low growing leaves is a lovely example of this (S. ‘Silver Carpet’ has smaller neater leaves than S. ‘Big Ears’). Convolvulus cneorum is a fab small evergreen sub shrub with shiny silvery leaves and masses of white flowers throughout the summer, and Ballota pseudodictamnus is a more unusual evergreen sub-shrub with rounded furry grey-white leaves. Sun-loving cistus varieties with grey green leaves and masses of short-lived flowers are also good for dry conditions. Some of my favourites include pretty pale pink C. argentus ‘Silver Pink’, C. x pulverulentus ‘Sunset’ with vibrant magenta flowers and C. x purpureus ‘Alan Fradd’ with large white flowers. Taller herbaceious perennials that cope with dry conditions include Perovskia ‘Blue Spire’ with silvery foliage and tall spires of violet blue flowers in late summer. Phlomis tuberosa ‘Amazone’ with grey-green hairy foliage and whorls of lilac flowers also copes well without much water.
42 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
Sedum store water in their succulent leaves and most love hot dry conditions. Tall upright varieties are a great addition to the border with their large flat flower heads turning glorious shades of pink in late summer/autumn. Sedum ‘Autumn Bliss’ is a vigorous variety with flowers that gradually turn from pale green to deep red while S. Matrona has striking purple stems and pale pink flowers andSedum ‘Purple Emperor’ is a dusky purple sedum with pinkred flowers. Carpet forming sedum varieties such as S. tetractinum are great for containers and also produce attractive flowers. Some plants, often those originating from dry rocky Mediterranean conditions such as lavender and rosemary have tiny aromatic leaves for reduced evaporation, and keep cool by releasing essential oils. Lavender varieties such as the popular compact L. angustifolia ‘Hidcote’ with dark purple flowers is a good drought tolerant choice. Other herbs such as thyme and rosemary also cope with dry conditions. Other means of adaptation include bearded Iris which store moisture in their rhizomes making them fairly drought tolerant once established. Make sure the rhizomes are on the soil surface in full sun. I. ‘Black Swan’ is a sumptuous dark purple variety and I. ‘Jane Phillips’ is a pretty pale blue variety. Finally plants such as Gaura lindheimeri cope with dry conditions by having long taproot. The airy spires of flowers on this perennial go on into autumn. Another example of a plant with long tap roots is Euphorbia. E. characias, which originates from the Mediterranean and once established copes well with drought. Follow Janine on Instagram @janinewinlaw

CELEBRATING OUR ST ANN’S COLLECTION
t was great to finally visit St Ann’s Hospice in Little Houlton and celebrate the JustHelping Christmas Tree Collection which raised £42,166.76 for St Ann’s Hospice. Our JustHelping volunteer team, led by Iain and Fiona and supported fantastically by Kay, Amanda and Mark, have done remarkable work in building and expanding their Christmas Tree Collection across South Manchester. This allows JustHelping to support St Ann’s Hospice in providing specialist palliative care for people with life-limiting conditions, at all stages of their illness. Our Christmas Tree Collection is an enjoyable event which brings the community together. This year, we were able to assemble 120 volunteers who helped spread awareness, collect and recycle trees. We are immensely grateful to all of the individuals, organisations and corporates who supported the execution of this collection. We would like to especially thank everyone involved in the sponsorship, design and delivery of all of our marketing materials. Every posted leaflet, placed banner and shared social media post invaluably helps to spread the word of the amazing work that we do. Thank you!! JustHelping is immensely grateful for those who provide us with venues, tree chippers and vans. Your generosity and support enabled the collection and recycling of 3,468 Christmas trees in the South Manchester Area.
44 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
All of our corporate support is invaluable in the execution of the event. Local businesses who lend their staff on CSR days are instrumental in helping collect and recycle the trees. We are immensely grateful for the hard work and energy of their volunteers during the collection period. We hope you found the event enjoyable and rewarding. Corporate sponsorship in all elements of the collection helps subsidise our collection costs; allowing JustHelping to donate a more significant sum to St Ann’s Hospice and the thirteen local non-profit organisations, such as sports clubs, scout troops and other local group. Our Christmas Tree Collections are solely dependent on our amazing volunteers and the inspiring work that they do before, during and after the Christmas period. We pride our Christmas Tree Collection as an immensely enjoyable and rewarding day. We are always looking for new energy, skills and experience to help expand our collection. The success of our collections derives from the people who organise and deliver them. Whether it’s collecting trees, canvassing leaflets, or getting involved in the organisational elements. Don’t hesitate - get involved! Please contact the Just Helping Team at admin@just-helping.org.uk

What are the Benefits of Pilates?
P
ilates is a low-impact form of exercise that combines deep breathing with gentle stretching to boost strength, balance, and mobility. Workouts target your “powerhouse” your abs, lower back, pelvic floor, hips, and glutes. Founder Joseph Pilates and his wife Clara developed it to help World War I soldiers restore their inner strength (both literally and figuratively), and millions of practitioners worldwide swear by its mind-body benefits to this day. In Pilates the quality of movement is more important than the quantity of repetitions. Correct breathing is essential, and helps you execute movements with maximum power and efficiency, learning to breathe properly can reduce stress. Pilates exercises will help you develop a strong “core,” or center of the body. The core consists of the deep abdominal muscles along with the muscles closest to the spine. Pilates improves flexibility and increases muscle strength and tone, it also improves concentration, body awareness and stress management. Arguably the most important health benefit received from Pilates is all about good posture and the calming self-confidence boost that comes with it. What Pilates classes are there? Pilates Matwork Classes The most popular form of Pilates is matwork. Matwork is a more traditional form of Pilates, which as it has been developed has incorporated the use of equipment such as balls, stretch bands, foam rollers or magic circles.
48 | SKCheadle Hulme & Cheadle - August / September 2022
High Intensity Power Pilates HIP Pilates is a more dynamic form of Pilates that combines the precision and focus of a traditional Pilates session with the dynamic energy of a high intensity workout. Combining core strength, balance and coordination with an energetic cardiovascular element HIP Pilates is the answer to many people’s search for a functional ‘feel good’ workout. The class is fast paced, but importantly LOW impact. Therefore, you will increase your heart rate safely whilst burning fat and building lean muscle mass. The class also uses light hand weights, which improve bone health. It was Joseph Pilates who said: “true flexibility can be achieved only when all muscles are uniformly developed.” So rather than saying you can’t do Pilates because you are not flexible enough, you should actually participate in Pilates exercises to improve your flexibility. Pilates is for life and can be life changing, so join a Pilates class now! A Brand New Smile in Just One Day! This is one of our ‘same day smile’ or ‘all on four’ procedures that we have recently completed. This is where all the teeth are removed, dental implants are fitted and temporary bridges placed, all on the same day. This allows the patient to walk into the surgery with a smile they’ve always hated and walk out with a brand new smile they’ve only ever dreamed about having. Around 4-6 months later, once the implants have settled, the patient will return to have their new, permanent teeth fitted. This treatment is an ideal, fixed solution for patients with missing or failing teeth and is perfect for patients who want to go from a smile they hate to a smile they love in just one day! Book in for your free consultation with one of our smile advisors by calling the practice 0161-486-0743, where you can discuss all of your smile needs, and go through the best options for your individual treatment. Additionally, follow us on Instagram (@ cheadlehulme_dental) to see further examples of our completed cases.
