EXCEPTIONAL FROM START TO FINISH

“Incredibly pleased with the renovation work by Spring Decorating. The work involved the replastering of several rooms, replacing internal doors, bannisters, spindles, radiators and then redecorating. All finished to a very high standard, which I am delighted with. The team was professional, efficient and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to have them back in the future.”

“We are delighted with the work by Spring Decorating. The response to our query was quick and a quote followed promptly. Work started a couple of weeks later on the outside of our house. The team always arrived exactly when they said they would and were totally reliable, pleasant and courteous. The work was thorough, with excellent preparation and looks very good. We will certainly use them again for more work.”

Golden moments abound at auction but every now and then a result stops you in its tracks. Hansons had reached lot 257 in May’s Antiques and Collectors sale. Under the hammer was an 18ct gold charm bracelet. It held 26 glittering 18ct, 22ct and 24ct gold charms, plus the lot included four loose charms. The hammer fell at £6,100. Charm bracelet owners may be surprised to know these trinket-rich delights are in such hot demand. But gold is seen as a rock solid investment in shaky economic times. Lot 258, a 9ct gold charm bracelet with miniature £10 note, slipper, boxer dog, world globe, Scottie dog and poodle, achieved £1,060. It’s not unusual to see charm bracelets exceed £1,000. We have our ancestors to thank for this style of sentimental jewellery. The first charm bracelets were worn by Assyrians, Babylonians, Persians, and Hittites and began appearing from 600-400 BC. The wearing of charms may have begun as a form of amulet or talisman to ward off evil spirits or bad luck. In the 19th century Queen Victoria’s charm bracelets sparked a fashion among European nobility. She liked to wear them and give them as gifts. When her husband Prince Albert died she made mourning charms popular. Charm bracelets sell well due to their weight but gold in all its guises is in demand. Unwanted jewellery or coins could give your bank balance a healthy boost. Other top sellers in Hansons’ summer sales included lot 348, a gent’s vintage Enterna-Matic 3003 18ct gold wristwatch, £2,000, and lot 333, an early 20th century 18ct gold Thomas Russell & Son pocket watch, £1,000. And never underestimate the power of coins. A Charles gold Unite coin, circa 1625, sold for £2,000. It was found in a dressing table by a client clearing her late aunt’s property. She assumed it must be fake and tossed it into a collection of low value 20th century coins. Thankfully, our expert spotted the golden gem. Worldwide gold prices have risen by 8% in the last three months and nearly 34% over the last year. Economic analysts predict gold prices will continue to rise significantly. Entries are invited for Hansons’ jewellery sales. Enquiries Helen Smith: hsmith@ hansonsauctioneers.co.uk. Free valuations of antiques, jewellery, dolls and teddies are available at St John’s Knutsford Church Centre, Church Hill, Knutsford, Cheshire, WA16 6DH. ELEVATE YOUR HALLWAY

I’ve been coming up with inventive ways to use that scrappy space under the stairs. Mine was full of coats, plastic bags (like they need their own space now!) and the ironing basket, along with a load of ‘stuff’ that even if I needed it I wouldn’t know where to find it. So let’s relocate some of this and create beauty, making it amazing and useful.

How about a child’s play area? This is such a great idea as not only is it a cool place for the kids and their friends to hang out, it can be used for their toy storage and looks fantastic. You could have bench seating with storage underneath or beanbags and a cupboard built in for it all to be tidied away afterwards. They could have little afternoon tea parties in there with bunting and colourful cushions, or play mini Lego masters with friends. They would love their own space and it might even keep the carnage to that area (we can all hope).

Are all the dog’s bowls and toys getting kicked in the kitchen? Give your gorgeous canine friend their own space to relax. You could have bunk beds for a couple of pooches, a cupboard inside or next to it built in to the angle for all their leads, boxes, toys, coats and your walking gear. Wipe down walls and removeable cushions, even

pull out bowls in a drawer. This can be bespoke to your needs and whims.

Or else a grown up, gorgeous and practical area for what was actually in the understairs cupboard in the first place. Ironing in wicker baskets under a bench to put your shoes on. Coats hung on carefully chosen hooks, maybe some panelling and definitely a storage area

for the ironing board, extension cables and those plastic bags!

Please let me know if I can help create this for you, Sharon.

Summer Recipe 2023

Pepper Steak with Garlic Soy sauce butter

This is a great dish either on your bbq or on a griddle pan if the weather doesn’t hold. I made it for 2 but you can easily double the dish. It is from a lovely recipe book about Izakaya the small drinking dens of Japan which serve delicious bites along side beer or sake.

1 tbsp oil

1 300g – 400g rib eye steak at least 1in thick. (Don’t get one from the supermarket they are too thin, go to your local butcher and get him/her to cut it for you)

A very generous amount of freshly ground black pepper

4 tbsp of water

2tbsp good soy sauce (I use Kikkoman –t does make a difference)

1tbsp of sake (drink the rest chilled with your guest of choice)

1tbsp runny honey

20g butter

3 garlic cloves thinly sliced

Get your bbq really really hot (white coals and all that) or your griddle pan really hot

If using a bbq brush the oil on the steak, if your using the griddle pour the oil in.

Season the steak all over with the pepper – be very generous. Lay the steak on the heat and cook it on one side until it is nicely browned (2 – 3 mins) Turn over and cook again til browned (2mins). The steak should be rare but if you like it a bit more done cook for another 2 mins flipping the steak so it cooks evenly. When it is to your liking remove from the heat and let it rest on a chopping board.

If using the pan – remove it from the heat and add the water. If you’ve used the bbq you’ll need to heat up a pan at this stage and then add the water. Add the soy sauce, sake, honey, butter and the garlic and put back on the heat and simmer for 4- 5 minutes unitl the liquid reduces and the garlic infuses into the gravy then remove from the heat. Slice the steak into bite sized cubes about 2cm wide and toss through the pan sauce and serve with some rice and steamed greens.

Sake is quite strong so make sure you drink it slowly whilst enjoying your steak!

MORE THAN SKIN DEEP: THE IMPACT OF SCAR MASSAGE

Scarring affects over 20 million people in the UK, according to a survey by The Scar Free Foundation (2019). Yet the findings reveal that scarring is not talked about enough in our society and there is still a lack of public awareness of the physical – as well as emotional – impact that scarring can have on people.

According to the survey, despite over a third (38%) of the UK population having a scar, it is often a ‘hidden issue’.

As your body heals after surgery or trauma such as fractures or burns, scar tissue forms. Scar tissue is less functional and mobile , adhesions may form, sticking together layers under the skin. Radiotherapy treatment also causes fibrosis. People can experience a wide range of symptoms at or around their scar including:-

v Pain associated with the scar

v Sensitivity or numbness

v Persistent itching

v Reduced /Limited Movement

v Puckering, tightness or ‘stuck tissue’

v Scar Adhesions

v Altered posture/movement

v Deferred pain /discomfort

v Ongoing Inflammation/’Puffiness’

v Abdominal Bloating

v Digestive issues

v Breathing pattern changes

v Fertility/menstrual complications

Scar Massage treatments can help stimulate the scar and underlying tissues. Pain & discomfort are not always felt at the source of the problem, scar massage is a holistic approach combining understanding of any discomfort or pain with assessing movement and mobility across the body as well as directly around the scar -focussing on reducing any issues related to a surgery, trauma or radiotherapy.

n Release Tightness

Scar Therapy can help loosen and release tight scar tissue to reduce discomfort. Treatment can be beneficial on both new and old scars.

n Support Emotional Wellbeing

Gentle therapeutic Touch can be a powerful way to aid emotional recovery and accept changes after a surgery or accident

n Stimulate and Boost Healing

Scar massage & Lymphatic Drainage Massage are often recommended by surgeons to promote optimum scar healing after surgery and may minimise long term complications.

n Help Restricted Mobility

By reducing tightness and encouraging mobility between the layers of the skin, fascia and muscle, range of movement can improve.

n Reduce Sensitivity and Pain

Trapped nerves and irritated scar tissue can be a factor to prolonged discomfort. Therapeutic touch may decrease pain and help normalise sensitivity

Every scar comes with a story and the aftereffects of having a scar can include physical and emotional pain and distress. If you’re starting to experience symptoms at or around your scar, the best action is to seek early intervention. Scar Therapy treatment in the first 6 months after surgery is really helpful, but if you are living with symptoms from a historic injury or surgery it’s never too late to seek help and benefit from scar therapy.

SHOWROOM:

THE TRUTH WILL SET YOU FREE THIS SUMMER

The above, now (very) famous quote, adopted by many academic institutions around the world today, is originally from the Bible, John 8:32 to be precise.

Whilst its original meaning is not important for this article, it is interesting to note how the meaning of this, or any phrase can be adapted to fit any situation, or any needs. Originally this was said to be Jesus telling Jewish people who did not believe in him and his teachings that if they did, they would know the truth and would be set free [from their sins].

A more modern interpretation of this statement could simply be to observe that untruths, deception or lies can eat away at a person over time. It takes many more lies to maintain a single lie, and at any point the guard can slip, this tightrope is not an easy one to tread and it can be very draining and complex. The truth, whilst difficult sometimes to express, is liberating and simple to exist around once it is out there.

There are a great many more brilliant quotes on truth, and a couple are below with short explanations:

“The truth is incontrovertible. Malice may attack it, ignorance may deride it, but in the end, there it is.”

Written by Winston Churchill in his war memoirs. A stark reminder that the truth will always win in the end because it is indestructible, independent and ultimately undeniable. Anyone concealing anything with lies must always worry that one day the truth will emerge.

“A lie cannot live” - Martin Luther King Jr. simply stating that lies cannot exist forever, whereas the truth can and will.

This concept can be demonstrated by considering all the untruths about the world that have existed; The flat earth theories, the one about the sun and stars orbiting the earth, believing that sacrificing people would make crops grow better… These beliefs were temporary because they weren’t true. However, If you destroyed every scientific textbook in the world and made up stories about existence again in their place; before too long, every scientific text book would be back, more or less the same. This is because

they tell the truth, science is simply explaining what already is there.

The context I have given on the truth here is needed in order to deal with the following questions most effectively, which are your homework… but don’t worry, I won’t be collecting it in and marking it, it’s just for you! (Please scribble away!)

Are you being honest with yourself in all aspects of your life?

Are you being honest right now with the people around you in your life about how you are doing, how things are going for you, and how you are feeling?

If not (to either or both of the above), why not? And how could you start to address this?.

Are you getting the most you can out of this summer? It has already started incase you haven’t noticed.

How many summers do you have left in your life? A clue is that life expectancy in the UK is around 80. So for me, who is approaching 40, I have seen around half of the summers I will ever see…

Given the above sobering reality, how are you going to make this summer one you will never forget.

We only get one chance at life. Being totally honest with yourself, and remembering that the truth will set you free, are you living a life you can be proud of? Are you living up to your potential? Are you making memories that will be far more important than anything else when your summers are running out?

It is time for home truths this summer, and remember, a lie cannot live, so be honest and take action once you have confronted the truth and been liberated, you will not regret it.

Enjoy the summer, you only get this one once.

The Great British Sewing Bee

The Great British Sewing Bee is in full swing this summer, and I hope you’re enjoying the shows! This season, there’s a joyful shift towards celebrating West African fashion and embracing the three R’s: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle.

As the fashion industry faces increasing pressure to minimise waste, we’re becoming more aware of our individual impact and the power we have to make a change. We’re making conscious choices, actively supporting stores that prioritise the environment. Instead of feeling overwhelmed by the impending doom, we’re hitting the brakes and discovering the joy of creating a wardrobe filled with easily replicable styles that generate zero waste and pollution. Traditional West African fashion offers us an inspiring blueprint, reminding us of the possibilities.

One delightful way to embrace sustainability and infuse our creations with authenticity is through the use of natural dyes. These dyes, derived from plants, minerals, and even insects, provide a sustainable and eco-friendly alternative to their synthetic counterparts. Indigo, turmeric, beetroot, and madder root are just a few sources that gift us with a vibrant range of colours, impossible to replicate with synthetics. The dyeing process using these natural dyes prioritises environmental sustainability, requiring less water and producing minimal chemical waste.

Indigo, with its deep and rich blue colour, has been cherished for centuries. Derived from the leaves of the Indigofera plant, which grows in various regions across the world, it holds a special place in textile dyeing traditions of cultures like India, Japan, and West Africa. Its unique properties and vibrant hues have made it a beloved choice for creating denim and other fabrics that carry a touch of history and beauty. Lovely!

Embracing natural dyes not only supports a healthier planet but also celebrates the captivating beauty and diversity found in nature’s own colour palette. By integrating these sustainable practices and drawing inspiration from West African fashion, we’re weaving together a wardrobe that not only reflects our personal style but also aligns with our commitment to reducing waste and protecting the environment. So, let’s grab our needles, thread, and enthusiasm, embrace the three R’s, and stitch our way towards a more sustainable, stylish, and brighter future!

Happy Sewing!

The Corporation Tax ‘Main’ rate increased from 1 April 2023 from 19% to 25% and for the first time in a decade a ‘Small Companies Rate’ was re-introduced to run alongside the ‘Main’ rate and was set at 19%. Companies have of course been used to paying 19% as the ‘Main’ rate since 1 April 2017. The Corporation Tax rate had fallen steadily since it reached its highest ever rate of 52% in the early 1970s but the recent introduction of two rates of corporation tax and the increase from the current 19% to 25% marks the first increase in the tax in nearly 50 years. Following the increase, the UK will still have the lowest Corporation Tax rate in the G7 but this will mean increased Corporation Tax costs of up to 39.4% which will be unwelcome to many businesses who are still recovering from the pandemic. The government had initially planned to introduce further cuts to the Corporation Tax rate but instead took the decision to increase the rate as one of the measures to recoup the costs of increased government spending during the pandemic. The government hopes to raise £18 billion a year as a result of the increase. While the increase to the main rate of Corporation Tax to 25% is grabbing the headlines, the small companies rate means that the Corporation Tax rate will remain the same for smaller companies with profits of less than the lower limit of £50,000. The government estimates that 1.4 million businesses will be unaffected by the increase. However, the last time there was a small profits rate, companies with profits of less than up to £300,000 rather than £50,000 were eligible, so this Corporation Tax increase will affect a much larger proportion of companies than in the past.

Companies with profits over the upper limit of £250,000 will be taxed at 25% on all profits,

not just those over £250,000; and companies will pay a marginal rate of tax of 26.5% on their profits if they fall between £50,000 to £250,000. This marginal rate of 26.5% will hit a lot of companies and yet this rate has hardly made the headlines.

Company owners might consider incorporating a second (or more) companies to share profits between them in a bid to keep them below £50,000, but it is important to note that the lower and upper limits which determine the rate of Corporation Tax are reduced where there are other associated companies. Associated companies are companies under the control of one another or under the control of the same person or persons. So, if Mr X owns two companies, these will be associated with each other, and the lower limit (and the £50,000 to £250,000 band) will be halved meaning the small profits rate will no longer apply if the companies have profits over £25,000.

The increase in the Corporation Tax rates, together with the increased dividend tax rate means that the tax effectiveness of operating a business through a company is certainly reduced though there are still many other advantages in having a limited company.

As always, you should speak with your accountant in order to better understand how the new rates of corporation tax impact your company and your circumstances.

HOW PILATES BENEFITS CYCLISTS

51% of adult cyclists in the UK ride for recreation, health, and fitness. This statistic highlights the fact that cycling is not only a great way to get around, but also a great way to stay active and healthy. It also shows that cycling is becoming increasingly popular among adults in the UK, which is a positive sign for the future of cycling in the country.

Training for cycling has been traditionally very simple; the more miles the better! But could the introduction of Pilates help the cyclist?

The answer to this is a resounding yes – at both an elite level, and also for someone who is using their bike to get to work or for health benefits.

For any cyclist improving efficiency is key – the more power they can produce with less effort, the faster they can travel for longer.

It is easy to spot a tiring cyclist – as fatigue sets in their effort becomes less and less efficient, and as they pedal, their bodies will start to roll from side to side on their bikes. In contrast, riders who are still moving efficiently will have their legs turning the pedals smoothly whilst their head, shoulders and body remain still and secure, in doing so they are wasting less energy to propel the bike.

Clearly, the longer a cyclist is able to maintain good form on the bike, the more efficiently they will use their energy, and the further and faster they can go.

What are the benefits of Pilates for Cyclists?

Pilates targets the core muscles that help stabilise the rider on the bike, keeping the spine in a stable position whilst the limbs move. By improving their core strength, cyclists can increase their power output. An increase in core strength also improves balance and therefore bike handling – always an advantage in both performance and safety.

It is not just through the core where performance gains can be found. Pilates also encourages improved limb alignment when moving. Again, the key here is improved stability. Making the movement more stable improves the movement pattern in the leg, stopping the knees and feet from turning or twisting during the pedal stroke. This delivers significant benefits in both force production and efficiency and – equally important – also helps protect against potential knee or ankle injuries.

Another advantage of using Pilates for resistance training is that it will improve muscle strength without increasing bulk, allowing cyclists to improve their power to weight ratio.

Last but not least, Pilates is known for its ability to improve flexibility and posture, so it’s a great way to redress some of the postural and muscular tightness and imbalances that cycling inevitably brings. Cyclists tend to suffer from tight hip flexors, necks and upper backs, caused by being hunched forward over the frame. Pilates will help stretch, strengthen and lengthen these muscles, and help to avoid injury.

Given most cyclists’ obsession about getting their bikes as light and strong as possible, perhaps it’s time more of them thought about their bodies in the same way, and start improving their speed, efficiency and endurance whilst warding off injury by introducing Pilates to their cycling regimen.
