Welcome to Wilmslow & Alderley Edge Welcome to the March / April issue of SK Wilmslow & Alderley Edge. For those of you who like me, are longing for the warmer weather and brighter days, we’ve gone with a cheery front cover. A small reminder that spring is on its way. Under The Hammer this month is looking at one of my favourite topics…watches. It really is a great time to check all those draws and boxes just in case you have a Tudor Rolex hiding away. Page 10 has the full story.

This month Under the Hammer page 10

Janet is getting the taste buds tingling with a lovely Mediterranean Chicken dish. Perfect to make at home. It will really get you in the mood for a trip to the sun! Page 12. Community news is a plea from Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank. It is just like a food bank but only collects toiletries and hygiene essentials. Have a look and if you can help, I know they would be very grateful. Page 22.

The time is right to bring your treasures to new Cheshire valuation event I’ve got some great news for the people of Cheshire! Hansons are back in the county offering free valuations in 2022 – and our hunt for auction treasure could bring you a windfall. Fortnightly events are being held at St John’s Knutsford Church Centre, Church Hill, Knutsford, on Helen Smith with the Fridays, 11am-1pm. Head of Jewellery Rolex Daytona. Upcoming dates include February 25, March 11/25 and April 8/22 – and I will be at the February launch! We’d love to see you and are happy to assess everything and anything from ceramics, glassware, silver and jewellery to paintings, coins, toys, railwayana, dolls, teddies and Audemars Piguet more. And if a vintage watch gent’s 18ct rose gold is gathering dust in a drawer Automatic Royal Oak, sold for £19,500. bring that along too! Designer time pieces can realise astonishing prices. To inspire you, one of the hottest watches in the world has just come in and head of jewellery Helen Smith can’t stop smiling about it. It’s got movie star pedigree and is set to star in Hansons’ March 31 Fine Art Auction. Coming up with a guide price of £6,000-£8,000 is a Rolex Cosmograph Daytona. These watches are so rare there’s a waiting list to own one from new. That sends auction values through the roof. A stainless steel and ceramic Daytona that cost around £10,000 in 2019 is now selling for more than £18,000. This isn’t just a timepiece, it’s a luxury investment. Consequently, the example consigned into our sale,

a series three steel and gold Rolex Cosmograph Daytona with white dial and diamond-set number markers, Ref. 116523, 2004, complete with original box, could spark ferocious bidding. The person we have Rolex Cosmograph Daytona, to thank is legendary Ref. 116523, estimate Hollywood actor Paul £6,000-£8,000. Newman. When he slipped a Daytona onto his wrist the die was cast for this watch to hit the stratosphere. In 2017, Newman’s series one Daytona (Ref. 6239) sold for US$17.75 million (£13m) in New York. But the Daytona’s success Tudor Rolex steel isn’t just down to the Paul Oysterdate watch, sold for £51,100. Newman effect. It’s a hard watch to find due to limited production runs. Hence the waiting lists. But Other designs and makes excel too. A Tudor Rolex steel Oysterdate watch bought for £300 in 1971 made £51,100 at Hansons. Then there was the circa 2017 Audemars Piguet gent’s 18ct rose gold Automatic Royal Oak watch, £19,500. Omega, Cartier or Longines are popular too. Hansons’ valuers will be at St John’s Knutsford Church Centre, Church Hill, Knutsford, WA16 6DH, on February 25 (Charles Hanson in attendance), March 11/25, April 8/22, May 6/20 and June 10/24. Mediterranean Chicken Recipe

I

am a bit of a cookery book fanatic – which makes gift ideas very easy from my husband. Last Christmas he bought me a gorgeous book by Claudia Roden called Med. I have been trying out some of the recipes and this one turned out a real cracker. A real easy tray bake with no complicated ingredients perfect for a quick supper after work.

Chicken with olives and boiled lemon. Serves 8 2 small unwaxed lemons Juice of 2 lemons 6tbsp olive oil 1 1/2 tsp ground turmeric 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 1/2 tbsp honey 250ml dry white wine 1 whole head of garlic – cloves chopped 16 skin on bone in chicken thighs 120g capers in brine, drained 200g pitted green olives Bunch of coriander leaves chopped Salt and black pepper

12 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

First put the 2 small lemons into a pan of cold water and put a saucer over them to stop them floating. Bring to the boil and them simmer for 30 minutes until they are very soft. Chop them up discarding the pips and then set them aside for later. Pre- heat the oven to 180C or 160C in a fan oven. Mix up the lemon juice in a large bowl with the oil, turmeric, ginger, honey, wine and some salt and pepper. Whisk the mixture well then add the garlic and chicken pieces turning well to coat. Put the chicken pieces in a large roasting pan skin side up dotting the olives, capers and lemon pieces in amongst them. Pour over the liquid from the bowl and bake for around an hour or until the chicken is cooked through. Serve sprinkled with the coriander and some cous cous.

Pilates for Horse Riders

U

nlike other sports which involve fast movements and cardio fitness, in horse riding the postural adjustments are subtle and require strength and endurance – a slow continuous demand on the stabilizing system. It takes a different fitness to stand or sit in one position for many hours rather than to move around constantly, as the body fatigues more easily in static postures than dynamic ones. Many riders spend countless hours schooling their horses and fixing their imbalances, but don’t look at themselves. Horse and rider are a combination. When training off the horse, we need to look at your body as a whole. It’s not just about fitness or strength exercises, it’s also about breath, body control and how flexible you are in the right areas. There’s a wealth of information about improving “core stability” in riders, however bracing the abdomen will not make the rider more stable. If the abdominal muscles are braced and tense – the rider will not be able to absorb the horse’s movement effectively. Focus needs to be placed on efficient breathing techniques, improving appropriate muscle activation and eccentric strength training and endurance in the hip muscles- particularly hip flexors and gluteal muscles. Looking at the principles of Pilates it is easy to see how these can be adapted to the requirements needed to be an effective and

14 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

proficient rider. Pilates will teach you better body awareness and more control over your body. Riding requires symmetry, balance, stability and co-ordination. Alignment when riding has a huge impact on your horse. If your body is misaligned your weight will be heavier either from side to side or front to back with detrimental affect to your horse’s way of going. You need to think of your pelvis, ribcage & head as building blocks which need to be stacked up over one another for correct alignment. If these boxes are out of alignment your weight will be focused more over one side of the horse. Rider imbalances not only affect the rider’s performance but also that of the horse and potentially it’s soundness (joint wear, soft tissue soreness and injury) So, whether you ride for pleasure or have a desire to compete professionally Pilates is a must for all horse riders. CELEBRATING A LOCAL CHAMPION

ere’s a story that will surely lift our spirits and inspire us, it is about a man called Brian Chorley. At the age of 83 he has become a media star. His newfound fame, TV appearances and press attention has not come from acknowledgement of high-profile charity work, a heroic deed such as saving someone from drowning or climbing a huge mountain it has come about simply from his daily working life. What makes his story remarkable and inspiring is that Brian, has worked on the same site for almost 70 years and without taking a day off sick!. He began working at Clarks shoe factory in 1953, when he was just 15 years old. Brain joined the factory to earn some extra money for his family, encouraged by his father. Brian was aware that money was tight after his father left the army following the war and he describes his family as ‘being poor’. Initially he worked 45 hours a week, he earned two pounds and three shillings and gave a pound to his mum knowing this would help their financial situation. He admitted that “Going from school to a place like that was overwhelming.” but he committed himself and worked hard. During the first couple of years, he did various jobs and at 17 he took on the extra work to learn the skill of shoe sole cutting which would see him earn £12 a week. Brian continued working for Clarks until the 1980s when he was his mid-50s. The factory was

16 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

closed, and the area was later redeveloped into the Clarks Village Shopping outlet which opened in 1993. Following the closure, Brian undertook various jobs to keep himself busy. Then, in 2005, a friend who had started work at Clarks Village called Brian, inviting him to join him. He originally took on a job helping sort recycling at the centre, but one day was asked if he wanted to move on to the guest services team, where he has worked ever since. He says this role suits him, telling reporters “I go out of my way to help people. I do everything I can to give them a good service and treat them with respect. I’ve been told so many times what a wonderful service they’ve had, and they feel so happy, and that’s all I want.” It is wonderful that this story has made the news and reassuring to know that we are keen to celebrate Brian’s values of loyalty, hard-work and his consideration and kindness for others just as much as we would the fund raiser and life saver.

hank you for joining me in this issue. It’s almost Easter which means The Great British Sewing Bee is back on the telly. The show has been introducing new sewing techniques to viewers, and helping bring sewing into a fun and exciting hobby for the creatives. Last year we saw some wonderful carnival costumes in International Week and some great dress up ideas in Children’s Week. Thank you for joining me in this issue. It’s almost Easter which means The Great British Sewing Bee is back on the telly. Series 8 brings in a new host, Sarah Pascoe who will join judges and masters of the trade, Esme Young (Central Saint Martins, University of Arts London) and Saville Row’s, Patrick Grant. The show has been introducing new sewing techniques to viewers, and helping bring sewing into a fun and exciting hobby for the creatives. Last year we saw some wonderful carnival costumes in International Week and some great dress up ideas in Children’s Week. To keep me company while I sew, I was searching for some great sewing podcasts. Listening to others telling their stories, inspirations and experiences is a lovely way to properly switch off from the world and really immerse yourself into your sewing. “Love to Sew” is a Canadian based podcast. I love their mix of guest speakers and expert advisors who join the channel and share their knowledge. If you’re a little older, their “Sew Organised Style” engage more with their social media and seek out great stories within their talented community. If you have a special skill such as

24 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

weaving dog hair into yarn, then this one is for you. Longstanding, ’Sewing with Threads’ is a great one to help improve your skill set. For a read for a long bank holiday weekend, The Sewing Machine by Natalie Fergie is one to borrow from the library. Natalie follows the story of four generations of family and one sewing machine which holds the family history. It’s a quaint story which travels back and forth through the histories of the families, beginning with Jean, in the Singer factory in 1911. The factory is just about to close due to a strike and Jean makes bold statement which goes against the wishes of her abusive father. You may want to grab a few tissues for this one. I was pleased to be able to interview Natalie in a live chat on one of my YouTube shows over the Christmas period (you can follow the link below). Natalie lives in Edinburgh, not far from Clydebank. Even though the factory has been demolished and the infamous clock tower lost from the skyline, there are small notable of the Singer factory still dotted about. You can visit the (very small) Singer Museum in Clydebank which boasts a number of exclusive machines found now where else. Have a Great Sewing Easter break, and don’t forget, if you need help with your overlocker or tricky fabrics, join me on my YouTube channel, Abi’s Den. Happy, Sewing! INCOME TAX –

I

Rates and Allowances a very brief refresher course

t is important to understand the personal tax regime at some level to make sure that you are not paying more tax than you ought to, so I thought I’d offer this brief recap of the rates of tax and the main allowances that are available in different circumstances. There are three bands of income tax, and we each have a personal tax-free allowance of up to £12,570. Beyond our personal allowance our income is taxed in bands at the rates of 20%, 40% and 45%. 20% is the Basic Rate band and applies to income up to £50,270; 40% is the Higher Rate band and applies to income up to £150,000 and 45% is levied over £150,000. Each slice of personal income is allocated to the band it falls in and is taxed at that rate, so for example a salary of £60,270 would only have the 40% tax rate applied to the top slice of £10,000. The expressions ‘basic-rate’ and ‘higher-rate’ taxpayer tend to be used to describe someone according to what band the top slice of income falls into. Wise directors and shareholders will transfer shares in their company to their spouses, particularly if the spouse has not ‘used up’ all of their basic rate band. If the director is a higher rate taxpayer, then it makes perfect sense to reduce their own dividends and arrange for their company to pay the sacrificed dividends to their spouse. (confusingly, the rates of tax on dividends are currently 7.50%, 32.50% and 38.1% for basic and two bands of higher rate taxpayers respectively, but the rationale for these lower rates is that the company has already been taxed on its profits before it could even pay dividends). Note that all rates of tax in respect of dividends are increasing by 1.25% from 6 April 2022. If a director and shareholder of a limited company is owed money by the company they can charge their own company interest. There is a mechanism for this and the company must submit a return to HMRC, but because we each have an annual tax free personal savings allowance starting at £5,000, (if your other

26 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

income is less than £12,570) and reducing to £1,000 (£500 for the higher rate taxpayer), as your other income increases; an element of the interest the company pays the director will be always be tax free for the director while at the same time the company’s profits and therefore its corporation tax liability is reduced because of the interest it has paid the director. I’ve mentioned this previously, but it is worth returning to. The Marriage Allowance allows you to transfer £1,260 of your £12,570 personal tax-free allowance to your spouse as long as you don’t pay income tax and your spouse is a basic rate taxpayer. This will save your household up to £252 of tax a year and claims made through an HMRC portal can be back dated to the 2018 tax year. If during the pandemic your employer has told you to work from home in the 2021 tax year or the current 2022 tax year then you can claim £312 relief each year against your salary; an annual tax saving of up to £62.40 for a basic rate tax payer and more for a higher rate tax payer. This claim is made through a portal and the tax relief is awarded through a change to your PAYE code, but with a likely minimum tax saving of £124.80 it is well worth claiming. In this article I touch on areas that are hopefully interesting and relevant. As we all know, tax is an immensely complicated area and everyone’s personal circumstances are different. So seek guidance from your accountant to better understand how any of these points might specifically impact you.

SEVERE PREMENSTRUAL SYNDROME A cupuncture is often excellent at treating hormonal disorders such as PMS (premenstrual syndrome) and recently it was my pleasure to help a patient suffering from a very debilitating condition called Premenstrual Disphoric Disorder (PMDD) which is like a type of very severe PMS. Up to 75% of women who have their periods may have mild PMS, but PMDD is much less common. It affects only between 3% and 8% of women. Unfortunately, women with PMDD are often misdiagnosed. Sometimes they go undiagnosed, being told they are just hormonal and need to get over it and unfortunately, it is all too common for women with PMDD to be incorrectly diagnosed with bipolar disorder. Many of us may experience symptoms of PMS. But if you have PMDD, these symptoms are much worse and can have a serious impact on your life. Experiencing PMDD can make it difficult to work, socialise and have healthy relationships. PMDD causes a range of emotional and physical symptoms every month during the week or two before your period. Emotional symptoms can be quite extreme and can include: feeling angry or irritable, mood swings, feeling upset or tearful, lack of energy, difficulty concentrating, feeling anxious or tense, overwhelmed or out of control, insomnia, taking less interest in activities you normally enjoy, feeling hopeless and at worst, suicidal feelings. Physical symptoms can include: breast tenderness or swelling, pain in your muscles and joints, headaches, feeling bloated,

28 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

changes in your appetite, such as overeating or having specific food cravings. If you are suffering with symptoms like these, or with the milder symptoms of PMS, do consider trying acupuncture. This is what my patient had to say about her treatment... “Having issues with endometriosis and a hormonal disorder called PMDD (premenstrual dysforic disorder) which is difficult to treat, I thought I’d give acupuncture a try without expecting too much as even medication hasn’t been much of a success in my case . Long story short, within 3 months of treatment with Fiona, my period pain and bleeding has become so mild to the point that I can get out of bed and function for the first time after many years and the PMDD symptoms (mainly insomnia, anxiety, brain fog and joint pain caused by the sensitivity of the hormone changes after ovulation) have been reduced to a minimum level! I highly recommend Fiona for acupuncture treatment . She’s helpful, she will explain everything in detail and she will do everything to help you.”

HOW TO CREATE A BLISSFUL BEDROOM

s it time to tackle your tired boudoir? If you’re planning on a restyle or a bigger update, start by narrowing down the choices and deciding on a look you love. Whether it’s calm and considered, dark and dramatic or luxuriously glamorous, there are plenty to choose from. One of my all time favourites that will stand the test of time is a classy, neutral scheme. Layers of creams, taupes, greys and white, added to some unfussy black to give it that edge. Structure is key. Have a central feature to act as an anchor-point. It may be something that’s already in the room like a fireplace, or perhaps you’ve fallen in love with an amazing light, or the bed – is it 4 poster? Wow, work with that if you have the room to house such a beauty. From here you can add items that work well. If you have a beautiful old fireplace, rub it down and re-paint it in a sympathetic colour. If you then add a bed from the same style, you’ll start to be able to pull together everything else to complement it. What if you’ve found a gorgeous, sleek, glass light that you just love? Add a classy upholstered bed head in neutral shades, similar simple curtains and light carpets along with a soft rug and layered bedding in shades of taupe against white and, hey presto, you have a full scheme. If you have the space add a chair, soft in colour then simple and elegant wardrobes to finish the scheme.

32 | SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge - March/April 2022

In a neutral scheme you do need darker shades and/or touches of black or it all just looks very samey. These can be added as curtain poles, cushion edges and accessories. Patterns can be used sparingly for added impact, pared back and limited to one or two areas. Bedding and accessories are key for the final look. If you just put all the stuff back that was in your old bedroom, it will start to look like the old bedroom. Treat yourself to crisp new bedding and throws for that boutique hotel look, it’s usually the biggest item in the room and will transform the look. Save ornaments and pieces you love if they go with the scheme but place them with pride in groups then add new items and choose elements across the room to tie together. Let me know if I can help, Sharon.

Can implants be an option for you? This was a recent case that we completed where we gave our patient the ability to chew and smile with confidence. The patient attended with failing upper teeth that were loose and infected. These teeth were removed and 4 implants were placed. These implants were then used to support a fixed bridge. This enabled the patient to chew without struggling and to smile with confidence with teeth that were setup to create a natural look. If you would like to know about which options may be available to you please give us a call or if you would like to explore more treatments similar to this, please call Jane on 0161-486-0743 to book in for a free non-obligation consultation
