EXCEPTIONAL FROM START TO FINISH

“Incredibly pleased with the renovation work by Spring Decorating. The work involved the replastering of several rooms, replacing internal doors, bannisters, spindles, radiators and then redecorating. All finished to a very high standard, which I am delighted with. The team was professional, efficient and friendly. I wouldn’t hesitate to have them back in the future.”

PROMPT AND EFFICIENT

“We are delighted with the work by Spring Decorating. The response to our query was quick and a quote followed promptly. Work started a couple of weeks later on the outside of our house. The team always arrived exactly when they said they would and were totally reliable, pleasant and courteous. The work was thorough, with excellent preparation and looks very good. We will certainly use them again for more work.”

Welcome to Wilmslow & Alderley Edge

Welcome to the new look May & June issue of SKWilmslow & Alderley Edge. We’ve just had a subtle redesign, hope you like it.

“Spring clear-out beckoning? Your vintage toys could net you hundreds of pounds” this is the headline from this month’s Under the Hammer feature. I do remember some of the toys featured but unfortunately there are nowhere to be found. Might be worth you guys checking out those boxes before they hit the tip. Full story on page 12.

This month’s Charity news (page 26) feature a couple of wonderful charities based in Wilmslow, Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank and Wilmslow Wells for Africa. Both helping people in need, and both would really appreciate your help.

We have our usual pages of events and activities in and around the area, to help get you out and about within the community.

All the best

Malay style Roast chicken found this whilst perusing my ridiculously, stupidly large recipe book collection – I’m a bit obsessed with cookery books. Anyway it looked delicious and not too complicated so I invited Jonny round and cooked it for the three of us. would say that the recipe says it does for 6 but there was nothing left after the three of us went at it. You definitely need to wear disposable gloves for this recipe – ended up with yellow hands for two days after. 4cm piece of fresh turmeric – in the herb area – peeled and roughly chopped. (You can substitute for 1 tbsp of ground turmeric if necessary) 2 lemon grass stalks – outer leaves removed and inner section finely sliced. 60g root ginger – peeled and chopped 1 tsp salt 3 red chillies roughly chopped 4tbsp rice vinegar 2 tbsp vegetable oil 1 / tsp cracked peppercorns. Put all the above into a blender – use one of those little handheld ones – and blitz until you get a smooth paste. 1.5kg chicken 2 limes halved Bunch of Thai basil (if you can’t find it use mint) 125ml of Chicken stock The day before make the paste as per above. Slash the chicken quite deeply across the breast and legs and rub the paste all over getting into all the nooks and crannies. (WEAR GLOVES!) Let it sit in the fridge overnight and then get it out to come up to room temp before you cook it. Pre heat the oven to 180c/ Gas 4. Put 3 halves of the lime into the cavity and all the Thai basil/mint. Squeeze the remaining half over the top of the chicken. Roast it in the oven for 1 4 hours –halfway through pour the stock into the bottom of the roasting tray to make a sauce. Let if rest for about 10 mins before digging in. served this with crispy Kale and Bombay potatoes with a little raita on the side. A reasonably robust Rose wine went quite well with it too. Enjoy.

If cardboard boxes packed with family heirlooms are gathering dust in the loft a major auction success offers a salutatory lesson. A client expected little when he bought a box of his late mother’s dishes to Hansons. He consigned them to auction with an estimate of £30-£50. Six of the items went on to make more than £100,000 at auction - much to his amazement.

Following the loss of his mother earlier this year, the 67-year-old retired computer engineer has been clearing her house, which was adorned with colourful pottery.

I spotted some of her items in a cardboard box in the saleroom - and they took my breath away. Inside were Chinese ceramics which appeared authentic. Adam Schoon, a familiar face on TV’s Antiques Roadshow and Chinese ceramics expert assessed the collection. The news was good. They were genuine.

I called the vendor to tell him some of his mum’s pottery would be entering Hansons’ Fine Art Auction with estimates in excess of £10,000. He was over the moon, but his luck was set to get even better.

Despite chips, a set of four small dishes (lot 357) achieved a hammer price of £63,000 from a £4,000-£6,000 guide. Three phone bidders battled against the internet. The total paid by a Chinese bidder, with buyer’s premium, was £81,900.

The dishes turned out to be late 16th century Chinese Ming Dynasty wucai porcelain dragon and phoenix dishes. Each dish bore six character marks in blue of the Wanli Emperor (1573-1620).

They were not the only items plucked from the cardboard box to excel. Lot 358, an Imperial porcelain yellow ground medallion bowl, Daoguang (1821-1850), with a seal mark in blue and of the period, sold for £14,500 against a £1,500£2,500 guide.

Hot on its heels came lot 359, an Imperial porcelain famille rose pink ground medallion bowl, Daoguang (1821-1850), with seal mark in blue. It achieved £8,800 against its £4,000-£6,000 estimate.

Both bowls (lots 358/359) sold to a private UK buyer for a combined total, with premium, of £30,290. Together, the three Chinese lots achieved hammer prices totalling £86,300. With buyer’s premium the total paid was £112,190.

The stunned seller told me the pottery had been gifted to his mother decades ago by an engineer she helped to care for. They’d been displayed in the family home for around 40 years.

So, what’s in your cardboard box? Never dismiss anything. Come to see us.

The Chinese ceramics sold in Hansons Auctioneers’ March 30 Fine Art Auction. To enquire about free valuations or house visits in Cheshire call 01283 733988 or email Janet Rawnsley: jrawnsley@hansonsauctioneers.co.uk.

THE ‘BATMAN EFFECT’ –EMBRACE YOUR ALTER EGO

Have you heard about the ‘Batman Effect’? It is the practice of adopting an alter ego to help overcome anxiety, boost confidence and be better equipped to deal with challenging situations.

Examples of this technique have been shared by pop stars Beyonce and Adele to help them get over their nerves before performing on stage. It is well documented that Beyonce created ‘Sasha Fierce’ to allow her to perform with extra selfconfidence. Her alter ego stayed with her until she felt she had matured enough to say goodbye to the psychological crutch. Adele followed suit and created ‘Sasha Carter’. The persona was a combination of Beyonce’s Sasha Fierce and the (real) country music star June Carter. Adele told Rolling Stone Magazine, back in 2011, that the strategy helped her give her best to every performance during her breakout year.

The alter ego method is not just a tool for pop stars to help them deal with stage fright, research suggests there may be some real psychological benefits to the strategy. Rachel White, assistant professor of psychology at Hamilton College in New York State explains “self-distancing gives us a little bit of extra space to think rationally about a situation. It allows us to rein in undesirable feelings like anxiety, increase our perseverance on challenging tasks and boosts our self-control.

For some, adopting an alter ego may seem a little extreme and view it as a gimmick for pop stars but there are aspects of self-distancing that can be applied to situations in everyday life.

Research carried out at colleges and universities in America, found striking differences between the adopters of self-distancing versus others. One study asked participants to think about a challenging future event such as an important exam. The self-distancing group were taught to view the exam event from afar, as if they were a fly on the wall. Those with the distanced viewpoint were much less anxious and this also encouraged greater feelings of self-efficacy, the sense that they could pro-actively cope with the situation and achieve their goal.

Another experiment asked participants to give a public talk, the fear of public speaking is a common anxiety for most people. Those encouraged to see the situation from an outside perspective were more easily able to master their anxiety and measures such as heart rate and blood pressure, usually associated with threatening events, were reduced.

Maybe the next time you are faced with a difficult situation and need to keep your emotions in check you’ll embrace your alter-ego – cape optional!

AIM HIGH AND ENJOY THE SUMMER

As we move through summer this year, there will be, as ever, many people in search of a fast physical ‘transformation’ in time for the holiday season.

Whilst there is nothing wrong with having high physical aspirations, the vast majority will NOT achieve a ‘transformation’. The main reason is because the vast majority of transformation seekers don’t have the right mindset for success. The reality is that people don’t really believe that transformations are possible and are also only really interested in trying quick fixes.  Many people will live for most of their lives feeling out of control with their body and lifestyle. People have become resigned to the belief that they are enslaved by their impulses, cravings and destructive behaviours, and most media and television supports this view. This is evidenced by over 70% of the developed world being overweight or obese, and millions of people being addicted to alcohol, tobacco, drugs and gambling.

We then find ourselves blaming everything but ourselves for these problems…

“It’s not me, it’s the food industry, there’s too much sugar and fat in food”

“smoking, drinking and gambling are too accessible and normalised, it’s not my fault I do them” - “I want to exercise but I don’t have time”

Do these excuses sound familiar? Trust me, I’ve heard them ALL over the years through helping thousands of people to overcome health problems. Having someone or something else to blame other than ourselves means we don’t need to take responsibility for our problems, we can simply be innocent victims of the capitalistic forces driving the consumption of all that ails us…

As a capitalist myself, I don’t buy this excuse.  It is no conspiracy theory to say that overweight people, and people who gamble, drink and smoke make mountains of cash for some of the most powerful global industries, such as pharmaceuticals, healthcare, food, tobacco, alcohol, gambling and of course governments (through taxes and levies!). It IS a conspiracy theory however to suggest that these industries are evil, and conspire to drive us to greater levels of ill health in the name of collective profit, and one which unhelpfully labels us as hapless victims.

It is perhaps most likely that natural economic forces of supply and demand, coupled with shareholder thirst for ever increasing returns render these industries overly focussed on generating cash, with no space for care and consideration. An apathy about the collateral damage caused by their quest for profits emerges, rather than an evil conspiracy. All that being said, we cannot forget that capitalism has given us many of the things we hold dear such as better healthcare, longer lives, greater standards of living, global travel, a far more peaceful planet than ever before and much, much more.

We can’t have it both ways. We can’t blame capitalism for all the evils of the world, whilst reaping its rewards in every other way. At some point we need to accept the situation in the global economy, and CHOOSE to engage our highly advanced brains to take responsibility for our own paths. It’s likely the market forces nudging us towards ill-health and addiction will always be more powerful than those trying to get us healthy, the more virtuous industries just can’t compete.

The health transformation industry isn’t helping either as it’s too short term, playing into the quick fix preference of the human brain which is why it is so rarely successful.

The desire for a transformation in itself is flawed, because if we find ourselves only wanting to get healthy for a holiday or an event, then the presupposition is that our actual life isn’t a good enough reason, and it should be. This leads to the conclusion that the only rapid transformation anyone should be interested in is a transformation of mindset, as if that is achieved, the rest will follow.

Being fit and healthy must be a lifestyle change, a mindset shift and a long term decision to live longer, have more energy, and to take control of our lives.

We aren’t victims by default, only by choice, and better choices must start now.

Aim high and enjoy the summer,

KEEPING YOU ON THE ROAD

Marathon running has become increasingly popular over the years, with thousands of people in the UK participating in these events every year. The London Marathon alone attracts around 40,000 runners each year, with many more taking part in regional events across the country.

Participating in a marathon can be a challenging and rewarding experience. It requires dedication, perseverance, and a lot of hard work to prepare both physically and mentally for the race. But the sense of accomplishment and the rush of endorphins that come with completing a marathon is second to none.

However, with the physical demands of marathon training and racing, injuries are a common occurrence among runners. According to a study conducted by the British Journal of Sports Medicine, up to 90% of marathon runners experience an injury during their training or racing. Some of the most common injuries include knee pain, shin splints, IT band syndrome, plantar fasciitis, and stress fractures. Fortunately, there are many steps runners can take to reduce the risk of injury. First and foremost, it’s essential to have a proper training plan and gradually increase mileage and intensity over time. Adequate rest and recovery are also crucial to allow the body to repair and rebuild between workouts.

In addition to these general principles, there are specific exercises and techniques runners

can use to prevent common injuries. Strengthening exercises for the glutes, hips, and core can help improve running form and reduce the risk of knee and IT band pain. Foam rolling and stretching can help alleviate tight muscles and reduce the risk of shin splints and plantar fasciitis.

For those who do experience injuries, seeking treatment from an osteopath can be an effective way to recover and get back to running.

Osteopathy is a holistic approach to healthcare that focuses on the musculoskeletal system and how it interacts with other parts of the body. Osteopaths use manual techniques such as soft tissue massage, joint mobilization, and manipulation to reduce pain and improve function.

Osteopathy can be particularly effective for runners because it addresses the underlying causes of injuries rather than just treating the symptoms. By identifying and correcting imbalances or weaknesses in the body, osteopaths can help runners improve their form and reduce the risk of future injuries.

DRESSING YOUR GARDEN ROOM THIS SUMMER

Summer’s approaching, hope for warmer days and evenings, look to spend more time in the garden gazing at how colourful and healthy the flora and fauna have become. Well, that’s some people, for me it’s never ending weeding, cleaning plastic glasses for the impending BBQ that have been in the garage since September and spying on the kids so they don’t eat all the snacks bought for guests. It’s great all the same.

Something I love to do is add accessories to freshen up the garden room. A few nice cushions, twinkly lights and a plant can do the trick. If you’re looking for a complete change, or have just had a new garden room installed, there are lots of styles and looks to choose from. Here are a few ideas. Whitewashed floor, walls and ceiling help make this room feel cosy like it’s enveloping you in cool fabric. Plump sofas, rug and a window seat in similarly muted tones add to the layers of texture that make it so inviting. Then darker tones for the coffee table, the actual chopped wood and the grey log burner prevent it becoming bland and lifeless. Add plants, people and coffee and relax.

The cushioned, cane seating and boho vibes are more fun and modern in the black, slatted walls of another garden room here. Black and white

bold patterned floor pair with a jute rug, brightly coloured textured cushions and throws with macrame plant hangers. Note there’s not actually much colour added to this room, just small additions, lots of plants and touches of gold to complete the look. Perhaps it’s a necessity, you needed an office. This is a nod to modern working requirements where we often work from home. A more formal look with a dark grey sofa for client seating and a sculptural coffee table giving a professional feel. Shelves for display and a feature wall with storage to keep it tidy. You can always pack away the laptop, throw a blanket over the sofa and voila, a sheltered area for drinks.

Please let me know if I can help make this a reality, Sharon.

Malay Style

Malay style Roast chicken

I found this whilst perusing my ridiculously, stupidly large recipe book collection – I’m a bit obsessed with cookery books. Anyway it looked delicious and not too complicated so I invited Jonny round and cooked it for the three of us. I would say that the recipe says it does for 6 but there was nothing left after the three of us went at it. You definitely need to wear disposable gloves for this recipe – I ended up with yellow hands for two days after.

4cm piece of fresh turmeric – in the herb area – peeled and roughly chopped. (You can substitute for 1 tbsp of ground turmeric if necessary)

2 lemon grass stalks – outer leaves removed and inner section finely sliced.

60g root ginger – peeled and chopped

1 tsp salt

3 red chillies – roughly chopped

4tbsp rice vinegar

2 tbsp vegetable oil

11/2 tsp cracked peppercorns.

Put all the above into a blender – I use one of those little handheld ones – and blitz until you get a smooth paste.

1.5kg chicken

2 limes halved

Bunch of Thai basil (if you can’t find it use mint)

125ml of Chicken stock

The day before make the paste as per above. Slash the chicken quite deeply across the breast and legs and rub the paste all over getting into all the nooks and crannies. (WEAR GLOVES!)

Let it sit in the fridge overnight and then get it out to come up to room temp before you cook it.

Pre heat the oven to 180c/ Gas 4. Put 3 halves of the lime into the cavity and all the Thai basil/mint. Squeeze the remaining half over the top of the chicken. Roast it in the oven for 11/4 hours –halfway through pour the stock into the bottom of the roasting tray to make a sauce.

Let if rest for about 10 mins before digging in.

I served this with crispy Kale and Bombay potatoes with a little raita on the side.

A reasonably robust Rose wine went quite well with it too.

Enjoy.

WILMSLOW WELLS FOR AFRICAGARDENS DAY 2023

Wilmslow Wells for Africa (WWFA) charity Gardens Day will take place on Saturday 24th June from 10.30 to 16.30. This year there will be another great selection of beautiful gardens to visit displaying a range of designs and horticultural techniques. Refreshments will be available in several gardens and others will have plant sales to inspire you to get planting. No dogs please. Tickets giving access to all gardens are available on the day for £13 from the first garden visited, or in advance for £11 from Chelsea Flowers (Chapel Lane, Wilmslow), The Potting Shed (Alderley Edge), Primrose Cottage Nursery

(Styal Village) or from Shan (01625 520193) or Donald (01625 590339). Cash preferred.

Chairman David Cash said: “Gardens Day is a great day out offering the chance to explore some fantastic gardens in the local area. The funds raised provide much needed help in some of the poorest areas of Africa so it’s a win-win occasion.”

WWFA is supported solely by local volunteers and businesses and Gardens Day is our biggest fundraising event. Further information about the charity and how to make donations can be found at www.wilmslowwells.org

Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank

The High Sheriff of Cheshire, Jeannie France-Hayhurst, made a very welcome visit to Bare Necessities Toiletry Bank to find out more about what the charity does.

Jeannie was welcomed by Chair Wendy Hobson at the hub in Wilmslow where all the action happens along with “Team Tuesday”, some of the volunteers who collect donations, pack bags and deliver toiletries to 32 charities in the Cheshire East and South Manchester area.

The High Sheriff commented, “It was terrific to see such a hive of industry and volunteers doing so much for women to raise their self-worth and self-respect. It was a delight to meet the team

and to see how much they achieve in a small place and in a short time with such astonishing efficiency. The entire vision is one which builds self-respect and makes a huge difference to those who often have no one else thinking of them. You all deserve huge credit for what you do and I’m very proud that your kindness is making such a difference in Cheshire.”

If you can buy an extra toiletry in your weekly shop or have any unused, unwanted makeup and toiletries, full sized or minis please drop them off into the donation boxes. Locations can be found on the website, alternatively, you can donate online via the website www.bntoiletrybank.org

The joys of sewing…

Sewing, the art of poking yourself with needles and creating something beautiful at the same time. It’s an ancient craft that has been around since the crack of dawn and despite people considering it a ‘dead art’, it’s not going anywhere anytime soon. Whether you’re sewing a new shirt or fixing a tear in your favourite pair of pants, there’s something magical about turning a piece of fabric into a functional piece of clothing.

Now, sewing can be a bit frustrating at times. Have you ever spent hours trying to thread a needle, only to give up and resort to glue? Or maybe you’ve accidentally sewn a sleeve into your neckline or sewn one leg inside out. We’ve all been there.

Despite the occasional mishaps, sewing is a rewarding hobby that offers endless possibilities. You can create your own unique wardrobe, decorate your home with handmade pillows and curtains, or even make adorable outfits for your furry friends. The possibilities are endless!

Investing in a good sewing machine is crucial for a successful sewing experience. It’s like having a trusty sidekick by your side, ready to take on any sewing challenge with you. And let’s be honest, a good sewing machine is a lot more reliable than trying to sew everything by hand, plus it saves you from the dreaded finger pricks that seem to happen every time you try to sew something manually. Your fingers will thank you.

For beginners, it’s important to start simple. Don’t dive right into creating a ball gown for the Met Gala. Instead, start with a basic project like a simple skirt or a tote bag, you don’t want to be crying into a pile of fabric at 3am because you bit off more than you could chew! Investing in quality tools is also crucial for a successful sewing experience. A good sewing machine and quality supplies will make sewing easier and more enjoyable.

Let’s not forget about the stress-relieving benefits of sewing. There’s something therapeutic about sitting down at your machine and focusing on the task at hand. It’s like meditation, but with fabric and a bobbin. Just don’t stab yourself if you sew with your eyes closed!

Embrace your inner tailor and create something fabulous, and if all else fails, just remember, there’s always duct tape!

Take a look at my YouTube channel for the best sewing machine tips and advice on buying the right machine for you!

PILATES AND GARDENING

Many gardeners complain of low back pain after a hard day’s work of weeding or digging. While these tasks potentially require a lot of bending over, many gardeners do not realize that leg strength and flexibility or lack of can contribute to the overall health of your low spine. If there is a lack of flexibility in the hamstrings and hip joints then the action of bending over and flexing the spine places a lot more stress on the lumbar area.

Gardening is a great form of exercise and like any form of exercise gardeners should maintain an awareness of posture and good alignment. Pilates can set the framework for building a strong body and a foundation for mindful movement in our everyday activities.

Before you start gardening

Warm up! Well, you would if you were about to exercise so why not gardening?  Don’t worry, you don’t need to put your exercise kit on or get hot and sweaty. (That will depend though if it’s a rare hot day here in the UK!)

Have a brisk walk round your garden to warm up your muscles, you can also plan what you are going to do and get your gardening tools ready!

Tips to help you with better alignment when gardening

First, start flexing at your hip joint, knees, and ankles instead of always curving your spine to bend or get closer to the ground. By doing so, you will be using your legs to support your upper body. Start practicing with a small squat: with even weight over your feet, bend at the hip joints and knees until your spine and

lower legs are at the same angle. Keep your spine straight and abdominal muscles engaged for support. Practice alternating standing and squatting, keeping all of those muscles engaged.  If squatting is uncomfortable, buy a kneeling pad to allow you to kneel close to the ground but focus on keeping your spine in neutral while on your knees and not curving forward to do your work. Lastly, vary your activities. Instead of working for extended periods of time on one task, allow yourself to change activities and positions every 30 minutes or so. Too much time in one position will often irritate the back.

Attending regular Pilates classes can help you develop good postural habits and a strong core. Pilates elongates and strengthens, improving muscle elasticity and joint mobility. A body with balanced strength and flexibility is less likely to be injured. Flexibility can be achieved only when all muscles are uniformly developed.

Pilates helps to make your movements more efficient and body awareness will help to ensure you do not push your body beyond its endurance.
