Background The era of information fragmentation refers to the fact that people use online media to understand and read a larger amount of information and the content tends to be scattered than in the past. Complete information is broken down into information fragments by various classifications, which is the cause and significant manifestation of the information explosion. Its main feature is a large number of simplifications in the deduction process, which leads to incomplete information and incomplete internal logic.

Phenomenons

#2 Mind is easily distracted “Scanning social media while listening to a lecture” “Juggling fack and forth between tasks”

#1 Reading skills are declining “No patience to read a document that exceeds 15 pages” “Most of time is spent on browsing social media, pictures & short- videos”

[ Overview ]

Individual Project | 2021.05-2021.06 The installation resembles this era’s vast ways of obtaining information, yet it is disintegrated into fragments through diverse oline media, penetrating all aspectects of our lives.

■ Installation Art

“Scanning a lot of interesting materials without knowing what is gained from it”

“Attention is diverted by digital distractions- In a study at Boston College, people in a room with a TV and a computer switched their eyes back and forth every 14 seconds — 120 times in 27.5 minutes.”

#3 Constantly receiving information “According to a study conducted in 2014, mobile phone users receive an average of 63.5 alerts every day, with most viewed within minutes” “Must click every single app with red notification button before going to bed”

Research Characteristics

Causes Most Popular media content:

In 2018, One Minute of Day:

Lack of time to understand information

Multiple sources of information

Reading Declines by Age Group:

Difficult to manage information

Media Use Growth:

World Population of Digital Use 2021

Too much information

Irrelevant or unimportant information

Reduce Coginitive Cost

Fragmentation can quickly allow information to reach users directly and trigger the exchange of views among users

Saves time

Fragmented information can be perceived inbetween time for work breaks; meals; commute; waiting for others; etc, These actions suits the need of people in today’s fast-paceed society.

Connects with the world

Catch up and discover all kind of news and sources of information to stay on track with trend & connection with customers & leisure

Deeper Research

Brainstorm Escape frustration to find happiness on internet

Influence Effects of Information Overload:

Ineffective Information Processing Fragmented information only tells what is on the surface, but does not tell the principle behind it and its connection with other things. Long-term wise, we are accustomed to seeing the simplified information without in-depth analysis and connection between the points. As a result it weakens the ability to think about complex things.

Space no longer tiesdown to its function

Blurred boundaries of living space

Every APP pushes dozens of latest news, deals and messages within a few minutes. This leads to anxiety and difficulty in making decisions when one’s daily life is bombarded with messages, emails, pop-up news, daily headlines, etc. The flood of information piling up on a day to day basis produces more pain than gain.

Mind

Every piece of information one receives is an interruption on their cognitive performance thus we are often distracted by unimportant information and interactions, wasting time, attention, and energy and producing little of value

Body

Technology

Self separation with reality Split Screen Turning on phone is violently attacked by information like turning on a rapid water faucet

Summary With the advancement of science and technology, the dissemination and absorption of information continue to fragment. Moreover people's time, way of thinking and behaviour is also gradually fragmented.

Have multiple thoughts at once

Space

Information Distraction

Information Overload

paper shredder cuts our thoughts

Mobile device is entrance to everything

Fragmented reading is like snacking rather than dinner, incomplete but attractive Incomplete

Inability to convey emotions and delay face-to-face opportunities

Concept Objective

Working process

Ideation

An installation of a space that receives information, aiming to reveal the constant appearance of fragmented infortation is meaningless. It just to attract the audience’s attention and satisfy the audience’s curiosity.

Paper feeds out from TV like a shredder Acrylic paint on foamboard

Symbol of a media screen Paint the foamboard into “TV”

Slicing & glueing paper shreds Layering the strips

Feeling Crumble to create texture and volume To portray the huge amount of fragmented network information is countless. It weakens people's desire to read the information, even if they want to, there is no way of processing and finding out the ones they are interested.

Paper strip cut glued vertically Foamboard structure

RAVEL NT O TI A X

According to the most common ways people travel, I analyzed their behaviors, highlights and pain points of each corresponding stages. Acoording to the analysis, there is space for improvement in the planning stage and even problems occurring during travel can be avoided with a good plan no matter which type of travel it is.

Method

Result

My method of research is through generating an online Google survey to find the demands of users and ttheir ravel habits by getting statistics and informations they provide based on the questions I tailored. The gathering of informations help me to leverage my design strategy and to deepen my understanding of the pain points with travelling.

Participants are mainly around the age of 18-35 and a few up to the age of 65. Out of these participants, 70% of them travel 1-2 times per year and some even lower in frequency. The majority of participants travel with accompany, yet 20% of them like to travel alone.

DATE: March 27th, 2021- April 2nd, 2021 POPULATION: 42 responses

Conclusion

How will they plan before travel:

1. Cherish the opportunity to travel

Since young adults does not have a lot of time, greater number of the population only travels 1-2 times per year or even less, thus they will treat every trip with great care.

Travel Survey

Will make detailed planning and arrangements

No plan at all, the road leads

Get rough idea, plan accordingly

Don’t care, follows others’plan

2. Rough planning leads to unpleasantness

How do they feel about travel: Unsatisfy

Satisfy

Most people will only do a rough planning before going to the local area. As a result, this leads to unpleasant mood with unexpected circumstances as shown by the research survey

Cons vs. Pros: Full Schedule , too tiring Unexpected circumstances Doesn t achieve expected Deceived by local cost Disagreement with peers Long line-ups at attraction Gets lost Others

Frequency of argument while travel:

Relax Have delicious food Enjoy view Learn new things Shopping Others

3. Disagreement with divided opinions

Different plans leads to argument, and the one who does all the planning often gets complained at. Moreover 1/5th of participants answered they do not want to travel with any others.

Interviews

Persona

According to the characteristics of the users resulted the from questionnaire survey, I searched for 7 precise users with corresponding characteristics to conduct in-depth interviews Q1: Who does travel planning? how? What are the difficulties? Q2: What kind of purpose does the plan have during travel? Q3: If you travel with companions, what are the unpleasant things have happened? Q4: What does travel mean to you?

Controlling behaviors such as PUA came to a popular attention in the past year. It is damaging when a person tries to control elements of someone else’s life. High-pressure control cause mental traumas which is more difficult to recover than physical scars. When the behavioral strategy fails to achieve the expected control effect, physical abuse follows.

Manipulate every decision for others without caring about their own thoguths

Psychological Mind Play “Listen to my order”

the most selfish manifestation. It’s nothing more than thinking: I am wrong to you and everything. Yet they don’t realize they are taking control. This is most terrifying since it’s done with the excuse of “love” but it is actually abuse. Most of time being unconscious domination

04

Wallow in their own pain and misery so that others feel sorry for them and do all they can to make the hurt go away.

05

Overcontrolling parenting behavior is detrimental affecting their children in invisible but long-lasting ways, as a result children grow up are more likely to control others and be in a controlling relationship. Below is a survey of adults raised with unhealthy control.

Manipulator

After landed on the idea of using game interaction to reveal the focus of control, I analyzed pros and cons of 4 main game cate-

role play method to bring awareness to players about their subconscious controlling actions through hidden missions. gories and decided to use

Manipulators do so out of anxiety because they worry that if they do not maintain control, things will go wrong

Puppet Being controlled offers a sense of security and life direction

Consciousness

Role play Game

People often don’t realize they are being controlled or controlling others

Although the fictional character in traditional role play games have specific traits, players are still in control of the character. Players impose their's own ideas on characters without thinking about what the character want, thus controlling subconsciously to complete missions.

Player or characters that undertakes a quest in an imaginary world

First Person Game

Simulation Game

Adventure Game

it represents real world systems where real life examples can directly be drawn into the game

The player assumes the role of a protagonist in an interactive story driven by exploration and/or puzzle-solving

OBJECTIVE FOR USER

The purpose of the design is to simulate different control methods and process of others, mainly relationship of 2 people through an interactive game.

Realize Consequence Create Epiphany

Aware of Behavior Think before Doing

First person point of view displays what the player's avatar would see with the avatar's own eyes, enhances player- character relationship. Complete body is not shown thus doesn’t allow player to sense the character has its own trait

: real life scenarios of control can be too daunting and it takes away the playfulness of a game

The genre's focus on story often involves multiple characters to complete the adventure

UI Design

Plot Plot of the game evolves around Robo’s growth. In this role playing game, player experiences their life as ROBO from childhood to adult on a foreign planet. Player faces series of tasks, where every decision affects their next stage in life and their ending. The underlying mission are different types of control which requires the player to pay attention for detail in order to realize.
