Master Degree in Architecture and Preservation Course Building Performance Evaluation in architectural heritage protection Prof. Carlotta Fontana
end-of-term seminar: Heritage and everyday life People usually think the issue of turning spaces into places – environments where people enjoy living, working, walking, meeting … - is about redeveloping anonymous suburbs or blight areas in former industrial cities. Strange as it may sound, sometimes we happen to face “placemaking” problems in urban situations that overflow with meaning and nevertheless lack public friendliness, or where different activities clash. This year, the Course of “Building Performance Evaluation” studied the complex situation of the Prince’s Path, an important heritage route connecting Palazzo Ducale to Palazzo Te, where many varied and sometimes conflicting activities occur every day. The end-of-term seminar will discuss such questions as: How can we assess the various and different qualities and values of such a place? How can we clarify and better understand the relationships between this very special built environment and the people who daily live, visit, work, act in it, in order to improve the way all these different activities take place? The invited discussant is Angela Koch, junior teacher at the Bartlett School of Planning and founder of "ImaginePlaces”, a London-based young firm specialising in collaborative planning and design processes often taking place on neighbourhood level. She will discuss issues about assessing place qualities and illustrate some recent experiences of collaborative planning and design processes in central London.
