First, huge thanks to you, our audience, for supporting our first season of On Tour events. So far, we’ve had excellent numbers and great feedback. We’ve also been making new friends and contacts and are loving working with our new venue partners. In fact, some things have worked so well – in particular the outdoor theatre – we may even continue them after all the work on the Corn Hall is done. If you haven’t been into our On Tour box office in DesignerMakers@21, across the road from the Corn Hall, do pop in and see us – and all their lovely things! We have lots of enticing events to keep you busy over the winter months and, with 14 venues across the area – from Wortham to Brockdish and Garboldisham to Botesdale – there’s sure to be some great entertainment right on your doorstep! Music has always been a key part of our programme, so I’m delighted that while we’re On Tour, we’re still able to present acts of the calibre of: BBC Folk Singer of the Year Award 2014, Lucy Ward and her band; The Roving Crows, named Best Live Act in the Spiral Earth Music Awards 2014; The Sounds of Simon, the UK’s leading tribute to Simon and Garfunkel and, to get you into the Christmas spirit, the enormously warm and funny Something Happened. With fantastic theatre, top comedians and stand-up poets, fabulous children’s events, engaging workshops and our hand-picked selection of the very best films, there are plenty of reasons to hitch a ride with the Corn Hall On Tour. But there’s lots going on right in Diss too! In October, come and sample some of the wonderful range and quality of locally-produced food and drink during the Diss Food, Drink & Music Festival (see p 5). And on Saturday 28th November, there’ll be an entire day of festivities to welcome in Christmas. Head along to the St Nicholas Winter Fayre in the Heritage Triangle and stay on to enjoy the Christmas Lights Switch-On and live entertainment in the Market Square.

Far from the Madding Crowd

(12A)

Directed by Thomas Vinterberg, UK/USA, 2015, 119 mins With Carey Mulligan, Matthias Schoenaerts, Michael Sheen, Sam Phillips David Nicholls’s screenplay beautifully distils the life and loves of headstrong Bathsheba Everdene (a fine and mercurial performance by Mulligan), as she juggles with three very different suitors: a simple and honest sheep farmer (Schoenaerts), a handsome and reckless sergeant (Phillips), and a prosperous and mature bachelor (Sheen). Exploring the extraordinary resilience of the human spirit, this is a faithful yet imaginative reworking of Thomas Hardy’s timeless classic.

The Goob

(18)

Directed by Guy Myhill, UK, 2014, 84 mins With Sean Harris, Liam Walpole, Hannah Spearritt Filmed on location in the Norfolk fens, Guy Myhill’s uncompromising look at rural life follows 16-year-old school leaver, Goob Taylor during a long hot summer. Tensions build between Goob (fearlessly played by local discovery, Liam Walpole) his mother’s abusive boyfriend and a group of young transient field workers. Atmospheric, edgy and impressive, The Guardian described it as ‘an intelligent essay in classic Brit social realism… A beautiful evocation of the East Anglian landscape.’ We hope to have Guy Myhill with us to introduce the film. 7

Mr Holmes

(PG)

Directed by Bill Condon, 2015, UK/USA, 104 mins With Ian McKellan, Laura Linney, Frances de la Tour Based on Mitch Cullen’s novel and set in 1947, the film finds Sherlock Holmes living in a Sussex village with his housekeeper and son, and haunted by an unsolved 30-year-old case he can barely remember. Ian McKellen clearly enjoys the role of the great detective, benefiting greatly from the excellent support of Phil Davies and Francis de la Tour. This is a playful and mischievous film, with some surprisingly poignant things to say about old age.

The Sounds of Simon

Slow West

– a tribute to Simon and Garfunkel

Directed by John Maclean, UK/NZ, 84 mins With Michael Fassbender, Kodi Smit-McPhee, Ben Mendelsohn

Lose yourself in nostalgia and enjoy all the hits that established Paul Simon as one of the most successful songwriters of all time. Paul and Art are played to perfection and their beautiful harmonies are flawlessly reproduced. From Mrs Robinson to Homeward Bound, this is your chance to hear these songs as they were originally performed – just two voices and one guitar, up close and intimate. With video clips, stories and memories from the last 50 years… www.soundsofsimon.co.uk

A young Scottish man (Smit-McPhee), travels across America in pursuit of the woman he loves, attracting the attention of an outlaw who is willing to serve as a guide (Fassbender). The film is slow, in the measured way it shows the sometimes casual violence of the times. But the film is none-the-less captivating and and moving, confirming that Maclean is a first-time director to watch. A story of a gritty and cynical New World, told with wit and economy.
