Bubbly all round! The news we’ve been waiting for has finally come through. Our bid to the Heritage Lottery Fund was successful – a huge achievement for Diss in the current climate – and work is set to start in July 2015. You can keep up with news and progress by visiting www.heritagetriangle.co.uk or on facebook DissHeritageTriangle. The response to our local fundraising has been extraordinary, but we’re not quite there yet. We just need a further £30,000 and we’ll have reached our target of £100,000. If you want to help us and haven’t done so yet, details about how any donation you make could be doubled with The Big Give may be found on the inside back cover. Our live screenings from the National Theatre and Glyndebourne have been so popular that we’ve listened to your requests for more and will now be showing opera and ballet performances from the Royal Opera House. The first of these, on Sunday 28th December, is the ballet Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland, the perfect post-Christmas treat for all the family. Other Screen Arts highlights this season are Treasure Island from the National Theatre and The Flying Dutchman and Swan Lake from the ROH. We’re delighted to welcome back blues legends Paul Jones and Dave Kelly in January. As well as blues, we’ll keep you entertained with a heady mix of great performers and musical genres from pop and jazz to electric swing and folk, including a Mad March Hare Ceilidh brought to you by our friends at FolkEast. And, whether you want great theatre, the pick of recent films, top comedy and stand-up poetry line-ups, the work of major British artists, the best of family entertainment and more, you’ll find it right here on your doorstep. We’re heading into the most exciting year yet in the new Corn Hall’s history. Personally, this is one New Year I can’t wait to start!

British Abstract Printmakers
Two Days, One Night (15)
– The Great Generations
Directed by Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne, Belgium/France, 2014, 95 mins, Subtitled With Marion Cotillard, Fabrizio Rongione, Pili Groyne
This exhibition brings together the work of two major groups of British abstract artists. The first was that great avant-garde generation of the 1930s, who went on to become major international names after the war and included Moore, Hepworth and Nicholson. The second group which emerged in the ‘60s and ‘70s is more disparate, some loosely linked with ‘pop’ art, others influenced by American abstraction are represented by Bridget Riley, Howard Hodgkin, Sean Scully and others. This exhibition demonstrates that their skills as printmakers matched their skills as painters and sculptors.
The latest powerful drama from the Dardennes brothers (their Kid with a Bike was a Corn Hall hit) was again a Cannes contender. Marion Cotillard is a factory worker who has one weekend to persuade her colleagues to sacrifice their bonuses and save her job. Her visits to them are moving and difficult, and the palmsweating tension mounts. Cotillard bravely sacrifices glamour in pursuit of social realism: there are many victims on the shop floor; the unseen villains are in their offices.

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (12A) Directed by Matt Reeves, USA, 2014, 130 mins With Gary Oldman, Keri Russell, Andy Serkis Arguably the first of seven sequels to actually improve on the 1968 original. Andy Serkis is Caesar, the ape who leads resistance to Gary Oldman’s team of humans attempting to build a dam in ape territory. Performance capture technology again magics up apes talking with humanoid expressions. No trivial gimmick this: it helps the film to deal seriously with real issues, as well as ramping up the tension. And yes, there are sensational battles.

Finding Vivian Maier
(12A)
Directed by John Maloof, Charlie Siskel, USA, 2013, 83 mins With Vivian Maier, John Maloof, Daniel Arnaud Now considered one of the 20th century’s greatest street photographers, Vivian Maier was a nanny, mainly in Chicago, who secretly took over 100,000 photographs from about 1950 to 1980. They went unseen during her lifetime. Since buying her work by chance at auction, John Maloof has built a fascinating picture of her through never-before-seen photographs, films, and interviews with many who thought they knew her. Narratively gripping, visually striking, and ultimately thought-provoking. 6

Directed by Matthew Warchus UK, 2014, 120 mins With Bill Nighy, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Paddy Considine Winner of the Queer Palm award at Cannes, this uplifting comedy drama is based on real events. In 1984 lesbian and gay activists raised money to help striking miners’ families – despite reluctance from unions and some in the gay community. A terrific cast gives warm, funny and intelligent performances in a film which dives headlong into a very divisive world and a time when values tended to be seen in black and white. Manuscripts Don’t Burn
(15)
Directed by Mohammad Rasoulof, Iran, 2013, 125 mins, Subtitled Anonymous cast Why is the cast anonymous? That the director himself was arrested while making a film in 2010 is a clue. He is on bail for an alleged anti-regime propaganda offence; cast and crew fear the same. So this is a brave film, but also a tense thriller that explores human nature under a repressive regime. Two Iranian government hitmen are rounding up dissidents, trying to find an incriminating manuscript. The anonymous actors deserve credit for style as well as courage.

Directed by Lasse Hallström, India/USA, 2014, 122 mins With Helen Mirren, Om Puri, Manish Dayal Comedy food and culture wars break out in a Provençal village when Hassan’s dad opens an Indian restaurant just 100 feet from the Michelin-starred La Saule Pleurer. This predictably raises the gallic hackles of the chilly proprietor (Helen Mirren). Hassan develops a love of both French cuisine and Mirren’s sous chef; hostility melts like butter. (15)
Directed by Anton Corbijn, UK/USA, 2014, 122 mins With Philip Seymour Hoffman, Rachel McAdams, Daniel Brühl When a Chechen immigrant turns up in Hamburg’s Islamic community, laying claim to his father’s ill-gotten fortune, both German and US security take a close interest. The clock ticks down and the stakes rise; the race is on to establish his true identity – victim or extremist? A smart, absorbing adaptation of Le Carré’s thriller about good, evil and the sins committed in the name of national security, with Hoffman superb as the agent waiting for despair to be confirmed. 11
A powerful new play based on the true story of the turbulent 1972 Builders’ Strike. Events surrounding the strike are still making headlines 42 years on with the high-profile Shrewsbury 24 Campaign, led by ‘flying picket’ turned actor, Ricky Tomlinson, still seeking to overturn the unjust prosecution of 24 building workers. Combining Townsend Productions’ trademark entertaining theatrical style with popular and political 70s songs, arranged by renowned folk musician John Kirkpatrick, United We Stand tells the story behind the dispute in a way that is both compelling and thought-provoking.

What We Did on Our Holiday (12A)
A dazzling 6-piece fusion of saucy 20s swing and stomping electro beats, The ESC is the hottest live electro-swing act in the UK.
Directed by Andy Hamilton, Guy Jenkin, UK, 2014, 95 mins With Rosamund Pike, David Tennant, Billy Connolly, Amelia Bullmore
Fronted by a sassy female double-act and featuring electric double bass, vintage samples and gypsy-jazz guitar, The ESC’s explosive sound reverberates back through time, drawing influences from 1920s swing and jazz.
In this impressive feature-length development of the successful tv comedy series Outnumbered, the original stars are replaced by David Tennant and Rosamund Pike. And there’s a darker twist, as the warring parents try to hide things from the ailing grandad (Connolly). So the laughs, though freely flowing, are often deliciously near the bone. The three precocious children are of course key – not least in dealing with grandad. Tennant and Pike hold the film, if not the family.
Ladies and gentlemen, get your dancing shoes on and hold onto your hats, the circus is coming to town! www.electricswingcircus.com

Directed by Pawel Pawlikowski, Poland, 2013, 82 mins, Subtitled With Agata Kulesza, Agata Trzebuchowska, Dawid Ogrodnik This hugely acclaimed film is set in 1960s Poland – and, shot in black and white – looks as if it was made then. This is powerful in itself, and makes for an eerie beauty. But it’s the story of a nun making contact with her worldly aunt, and the resulting unveiling of family secrets, that unleashes the film’s power. Bleakness is tempered by compassion and warmth. The director (known for My Summer of Love) says Ida is ‘a film about identity, family, faith, guilt, socialism and music’. 14

Directed by Yann Demange, UK, 2014, 99 mins With Jack O’Connell, Sam Reid, Sean Harris This is a necessary, honest and moving re-creation of recent domestic history. Set in West Belfast in the early stages of the conflict, it’s also a tight thriller, full of action and with a no-nonsense take on what was going on between the Republicans and the British army. It centres on one squaddie (played with unmistakeable star quality by Jack O’Connell) who is accidentally left stranded in no-man’s-land. He is naïve about the terrible complexities he finds; we see the reality.

A couple of minutes could double your donation to the Corn Hall Garfield Weston has put £250,000 into the Big Give Christmas Challenge and we are one of the lucky projects whose donors can apply for it. Give anything from £5 to £3,000 and they will match your donation. But it’s only on for 3 days and its first come first served. The best chance of having your money doubled is to donate on 4th, 5th, 6th December at 10am and, until the money has gone, your gift will be doubled. So be ready and waiting on those dates with your finger on the button – it’s too good a chance to miss! Donate through www.thebiggive.org.uk or the link on www.heritagetriangle.co.uk Spread the word
