This summer the Corn Hall is taking wing with a series of events and exhibitions celebrating birds and the countryside. The much-anticipated Birds & People by the best-selling author of Crow Country, Mark Cocker, is given its East Anglian launch. In addition to a talk by the author, an exhibition of some of the book’s most striking images, taken by top wildlife photographer David Tipling, will be held in the gallery. In July, the work of artist Steve Cale reveals the secrets of the hidden countryside around us, and the following month sees Waveney & Blyth Arts present Famous Five Birds, a family show about some of the birds that make this part of the country so special. We have a cracking musical line-up this season: true legends of the folk scene Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick, The Budapest Cafe Orchestra described by The Times as “the finest purveyors of Eastern European gypsy music” and the music and dance spectacular of Zambra Flamenca. And don’t miss US charttopping roots and bluegrass sensation, Carrie Rodriguez. There’s also a rich variety of quality theatre in store, from the brilliant Austen’s Women which brings 13 of Jane Austen’s best-loved female characters to life, to the perennial favourite, Lady Windermere’s Fan, from The Seagull Rep’s delightfully faithful staging of The Vicar of Dibley to Tangram Theatre Company’s hilariously inventive Albert Einstein: Relativitively Speaking. There are exciting changes offstage too. We have partnered up with local brewery Grain to run our bar. Grain won the Best Drinks Producer 2012 at the EDP Food & Drink Awards and, with the bar now opening at 6.30pm on event nights, there’s plenty of time to find out why everyone is making such a fuss about their beer.

Les Misérables
– Secrets from our Countryside
(12A)
Steve has been fascinated by the wildlife of our countryside since he was a boy. “Wildlife is all around us, much of which we walk past every day without noticing it. If you look a little closer, there is beauty to be found in the creatures that travel through life alongside us – I hope to share a small insight into that world.” Steve’s subjects, which range from song thrushes, owls and woodpeckers to hares and foxes, are drawn from life, capturing them in their natural habitat. Evening viewing Wednesday 3 July 6-7.45pm Meet the artist in person. Join us afterwards for our screening of Les Misérables (see right).

Life of Pi
(PG)
Directed by Ang Lee, 2012, USA/ Taiwan, 127 minutes With Suraj Sharma, Irrfan Khan, Adil Hussain
Trained by some of the world’s greatest Flamenco teachers, Dixey Rucelli and fellow dancers, Elsa Arcaute and Zeta Rose plus expert flamenco guitarists, Hagen Kiersch and Allan Ward and the top classical Indian singer, Rajesh David, combine to bring the fiery and vibrant Flamenco dance to the Corn Hall. An authentic and dazzling show.
Ang Lee embraces the most sophisticated CGI wizardry in his brilliant adaptation of Yann Martel’s novel. 17-year-old Pi is uprooted from his idyllic life in India when his father, a zoo keeper, decides to ship the family and animals to Canada. Storm and shipwreck follow and Pi finds himself alone on a raft with a Bengal tiger. Their story, as they learn to coexist, is part fable, part examination of humanity, and totally rewarding.

Directed by Michael Winterbottom, 2013, UK, 101 minutes With Steve Coogan, Anna Friel, Tamsin Egerton In the 1970s, the flamboyant Paul Raymond (Coogan), owner of a string of glamour magazines and an upmarket strip club, was known as the king of Soho. But, as Winterbottom shows, successful appearances can be deceptive, as he delves into Raymond’s complicated private life of wife (Friel), mistress (Egerton) and troubled daughter (Imogen Poots). A splendid vehicle for Coogan who, sleazily bequiffed, invests the part with Partridgean irony and comedy. 18
The wealthy Birling family is holding a dinner party to celebrate the engagement of daughter, Sheila. Into this happy scene comes a police inspector investigating the suicide of a young, working-class woman. Surely, members of such a respectable family cannot shoulder any of the blame? Open Space transports J B Priestley’s classic drama from its original pre-First World War setting to the early 1980s, when Margaret Thatcher was at the height of her powers. Running time approx 2hrs including interval.

Dance all night to the joyful sounds of the hugely popular SweetBeats, an eight-piece Rocksteady band – the melodic, soulful missing link between 60s upbeat SKA and chilled-down Reggae of early 70s Jamaica. With a selection of original songs and classic rare-grooves, there’s a heady mix of captivating harmonies, luscious horns and deep dance beats. Bringing colour, fun and style to their stage sets and snappy dapper outfits – resistance is futile!
