After all the waiting and hard work, our exciting adventure is about to begin. So, buckle up and join us as Diss Corn Hall goes On Tour to a hall, village or common near you! Thanks to local organisations and schools, we’ve found temporary homes for some of our most popular regular events. Our Wednesday evening film screenings are heading up the road to Diss High School, and Diss Rugby Club has agreed to host our Comedy Club – expect the same brilliant night out and top line-ups! Our monthly family Saturday Club will sometimes take advantage of our beautiful outdoor spaces – don’t miss The Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie on Fair Green in July and the Quaker Wood Nature Day in August. We’re also heading outdoors for our Summer Garden Party at the inspirational Bressingham Gardens, and DOT theatre company return to give a characteristically entertaining performance of Northanger Abbey in the atmospheric sunken garden at The Oaksmere in Eye. We’ll be using some of the wonderful independent shops and restaurants in the Diss Heritage Triangle. Our box office will be located across the road from the Corn Hall in DesignerMakers at 21 St Nicholas Street – both a workspace and a shop for 12 designers and craftspeople, it’s an Aladdin’s cave of creativity. There will be a fantastic range of summer workshops going on there throughout August (see pages 8 & 9). The Boilerhouse, the Triangle’s newest restaurant, will also play host to some of our workshops. You might like to have a bite of lunch there afterward and sample their great-tasting food. Finally, it wouldn’t be a Corn Hall programme without some outstanding music to spice things up and The Rua Macmillan Trio certainly fit the bill! Masterful, energetic, fun – a great night out is guaranteed. It’s an exciting new chapter in the life of the Corn Hall and we look forward to making new friends and seeing old friends in new places.

Testament of Youth
(12A)
Directed by James Kent, 2015, UK, 129 mins With Alicia Vikander, Colin Morgan, Emily Watson, Kit Harington Based on the impassioned WW1 memoir by Vera Brittain, this powerful story of love, war and remembrance is the classic testimony of that war from a woman’s perspective. A searing journey from youthful hopes and dreams to the edge of despair and back again, it’s a film about young love, the futility of war and how to make sense of the darkest times. As such it’s a natural successor to the war romances of Powell and Pressburger. 4

The Marvellous Imaginary Menagerie Roll up; roll up, for the most mysterious, magical and magnificent experience of your life! An exotic caravan has suspiciously arrived in Diss packed with magic, puppets, live musicians and characters who will entertain, amuse and beguile. Feast your eyes on this extravaganza from the makers of The Trench, a wondrous outdoor event for all the family. Make a day of it and bring a picnic. There’ll be face painting, ice creams, candy floss, tea & cakes and more! Tour presented by house.
Shamefully overlooked at this year’s Oscars, Ava DuVernay’s passionate account of Dr Martin Luther King’s campaign is a powerful and moving film. This unforgettable, true story chronicles the tumultuous three-month period in 1965, when King led a dangerous march from the town of Selma to secure equal voting rights in the face of violent opposition. A brilliant performance by David Oyelowo as King, and ably supported – not least by a scene-stealing Oprah Winfrey. 5

It’s a good-natured comedy, with its formidable thespian fire-power enhanced by Richard Gere as a novelist looking for his muse.

Wild Tales
(15)
Directed by Damián Szifrón, Argentina, 2015, 122min With Dario Grandinetti, Matria Marull, Monica Villa Although Wild Tales is made up of six different and independent stories, there is a thread that runs through the film, examining the patience and forbearance of ordinary people who have to deal with extraordinary issues. Director Damián Szifrón tells each story with an exquisite combination of intrigue, suspense and dark humour. While the film is intimately Argentinian, these stories of abusive government, corruption and people’s indifference resonate with audiences of any nationality.

Birdman
(15)
Directed by Alejandro Iñárritu, USA, 2014, 105min With Michael Keaton, Edward Norton, Emma Stone, Naomi Watts Richly rewarded in this year’s Oscars, this is a comedy about theatre, ego, passion and magic. The pace comes from a filming technique that presents a seamless picture of the attempted comeback of a fading star – Michael Keaton, wittily typecast. He’s trying to stage a show (the film is excitingly shot in and around a real New York theatre) against a background of conflict with his actors, his daughter and his girlfriend. After setbacks and against the odds, rescue comes from above…

Force Majeure
(15)
Directed by Ruben Östlund, Sweden, 2015, 120min With Johannes Kuhnke, Liisa Loven Kongsli A young family’s skiing holiday is disrupted by an avalanche – not physically, but emotionally. Luxury turns sour as the comfortable certainties of children and parents are challenged. The intense psychodrama is compelling and grimly entertaining, the focus on the adults and the cracks in their relationship sustained by fine acting and atmospheric scene-setting. A persistent thread of almost comic irony, a second couple, and a resolving finale complete the picture. 10
Saturday Club on Tour Saturday 22 August 10.30am-12pm or 1pm-2.30pm Quaker Wood off Factory Lane, Diss IP22 4NF Tickets £3 per child (Ages 3-10). Must be accompanied by an adult.

While We’re Young
(15)
Directed by Noah Baumbach, USA, 2015, 97 min With Ben Stiller, Naomi Watts, Adam Driver, Amanda Seyfried A comedy drama about the generation gap: how the balance falls between laughter and cringe may depend on your age. A discontented couple in their 40s take up with another, half their age and seemingly free spirits. Lifestyles merge and there are professional issues to be worked out, as all are involved in documentary film-making. So the film is able to address truth and reality, as well as the authenticity of generational relationships – a slightly sad and very funny film.

A Pigeon Sat on a Branch Reflecting on Existence (12A) Directed by Roy Andersson, Sweden, 2015, 100min With Holger Sandersson, Nils Westblom, Viktor Gyllenberg No-one else makes films like this – carefully staged, hyper-real episodes more or less linked into a strange narrative – and this is the third from Roy Andersson. His Living trilogy spans 15 years and is a sublime mix of deadpan comedy and distanced dismay – ‘metaphysical burlesque’. The mainly nonprofessional actors are seen from a distance, exquisitely choreographed. We meet barflies, soldiers… and pigeons. This unique enterprise was Golden Lion winner at the Venice Film Festival. 11

The Falling
(15)
Directed by Carol Morley, UK, 2015, 102min With Maxine Peake, Maisie Williams, Florence Pugh As a mysterious fainting epidemic spreads through an English girls’ school, it begins to tear the tight-knit community apart. In contrast to the stunning photography of the English countryside, Carol Morley’s direction creates a lingering unease. The film, layered with intertwining details, develops a dream-like quality that is both arresting and intriguing. With stunning performances from Maxine Peake, Greta Scacchi and the young girls, this haunting tale of mass hysteria is a thrilling debut for writer-director Carol Morley.

A Little Chaos
(12A)
Directed by Alan Rickman, 2015, UK, 117 minutes With Alan Rickman, Kate Winslet, Matthias Schoenearts, Stanley Tucci Belying its title, this is a handsomely mounted and beautifully photographed ‘chamber-piece’ about the creation of Louis XIV’s (Rickman) spectacular grounds at Versailles. Landscape architect Andre Le Notre (Schoenaerts) recruits a woman – a surprise in 17th-century society – to design one of the garden’s water features, but their relationship starts to extend beyond the professional. Stanley Tucci and Jennifer Ehle add mischief and court bitchiness, and Winslet is as commanding as ever in this story of romance, comedy and intrigue. 12

Suite Française
(15)
Directed by Saul Dibb, 2014, UK/France, 107 mins With Michelle Williams, Kristin Scott Thomas, Matthias Schoenaerts Irène Némirovsky’s novel about France under German occupation was discovered among her papers after her death. Critics hailed it a masterpiece. The film cleverly distils the book’s epic narrative, paring it down to a compassionate and complex story about occupied village life and the tentative romance between an unhappy young French woman and the German officer billeted in her severe mother-in-law’s house. Némirovsky was a superb storyteller, and the film has done her justice.
