All About

Running Mates

BY KHRISTAL MORALES

R

unning Mates is one of Sawyer’s clubs. In it are 6th and 7th graders who love to run. We practice together three times a week. Our sponsor, Ms. Avila, took a minute to have a conversation about our club and herself. What’s Up With Sawyer: Why Running Mates? Ms. Avila: I already coached track and field. I felt that my team needed a year round running program. We needed a program to push us hard all year long.

WUWS: Are you proud of your team? MA: I am, because they have become better runners and work hard. WUWS: How many races have you done? MA: This year we had six races. WUWS: Tell us about field trips. MA: [We’ve gone to] the Race To Wrigley and Pumpkin in the Park at Lincoln Park Zoo. We did the CARA 5k race. We attended hip-hop yoga. We went bowling with kids all over Chicago.

WUWS: What made you interested in coaching the team? MA: My friend Ms. Carrillo. She needed someone to coach track and field. Ms. Carrillo taught me all the rules of track and field and made me love running.

WUWS: What’s your favorite race you’ve ever run? MA: The race called Race to Wrigley. I ran it in Wrigleyville - home of the Chicago Cubs, my favorite team.

WUWS: Do you enjoy being a coach? MA: Yes, I love running and motivating students.

WUWS: What’s your dream run? MA: One day I want to run the Chicago Half Marathon or Chicago Full Marathon. What’s Up With Sawyer 5

Kids Issues

Should Everyone

Be On Social Media? BY DAYNA VILLAFUERTE & CINTHYA PALAFOX

T

his is the new generation. One of the many things that we have these days is technology. One aspect of technology is social media. Everybody has access to it. But our question is: Should they? There are many social media apps like Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram. These days both kids and adults spend their free time on social media. Do people know what the kids are doing on social media? That is what many people worry about. There are people in the world that put inappropriate information on these sites. For example, some people bully online. This is called cyberbullying. Cyberbullying leads to rumors and possible violence in school. Cyberbullying can also lead the victim to cutting, or suicide because it hurts people’s feelings so much. Some kids aren’t mature enough to use social media. There are adults who try to lure young children to meet them and then kidnap them. On social media some kids can give their information away to the world by accident. If this happens then kids can be in serious danger. Facebook is one of the most popular social media apps/pages. The many people on it include bullies, criminals, and of course the innocent users. There are so many young children on Facebook possibly risking their lives, not knowing who they are talking to, and giving their private information away. 6 What’s Up With Sawyer

People start rumors about others. That’s how bullying and cyberbullying begins. Experts believe that 8.7 percent of users on Facebook are fake. These phony profiles can be from cyberbullies to criminals pretending to be kids trying to lure you into their trap. Since last year the number of social media users rose to approximately 176 million. New active users join social media all the time. Can you believe at the rate of about 1 million per day? That’s 7 million per week! Criminals can get personal information like your address and other personal facts. If they convince the children to meet them, they could be in serious danger. Think about it, kids are kids. Sometimes they forget their lunch, keys, or even their homework. In our opinion, we think if kids can’t even be trusted with locking the door after they leave the house, then how are they responsible for what happens to them on social media?

Bullies: Behind the Mask

BY ISABELLA INIGUEZ

E

veryone knows the words people use to describe the bullies behind the bullying: mean, powerful, unpopular. What do you really know about the bully? What are their motives? What’s going on in their head? How do they feel? Let me unfold the mystery in front of your eyes.

bystanders are people who observe bullying but do nothing about it. The effects of being a bystander to bullying are: fearfulness, powerless to act, guilt for not acting, and the temptation to bully themselves.

Many don’t realize that not all bullies do what they do just to be mean. Many do it out of fear or anger. Bullies deal with troubles (such as family issues or loss). They bully to feel like they have power and are in control. There are usually two kinds of bullies: social and isolated.

Schools are supposed to be healthy and safe environments. Bullying makes people feel unsafe. It also affects learning. Bullying issues can make students feel that the staff have little control and don’t care about the student’s safety or well-being. Students can end up having difficulty learning, and develop a dislike for school.

Social bullies are well-connected with peers, have social power, think about popularity, and like to be in charge of others. Isolated bullies may be depressed/anxious, have low self-esteem, are less involved in school, easily pressured by peers, or don’t identify with the emotions/feelings of others.

The bullies themselves feel regret or anger. They get into physical or verbal fights and sometimes have unexplained extra money or new belongings. They blame others for their problems and don’t accept responsibility for their actions. Finally, they are competitive and worry about their reputation.

You can identify a social bully because they usually hang out with a group of people 24/7. Isolated bullies are usually alone.

Bullying is terrible for anyone. So what can you do to stop it? Just treat everyone with respect. Think about what you’re about to say to diffuse a problem situation, and talk to an adult that you trust.

Did you know that it isn’t just the victims of the bullying that experience side-effects? The bystanders, schools, and the bullies themselves also get a taste of some nasty effects. The

Keep in mind that everyone is different, and being different does not mean being bad. What’s Up With Sawyer 7

HALO

5 Review

BY NICOLAS HUERTA

T

he Halo series has been a gate opener for XBOX for many years, starting in 2001 with Halo Combat Evolved. It’s defined as the console shooter. My first game was Halo 2 for the original XBOX. Halo has gone through three different consoles, books, movies, and more. In the series latest title, Halo 5 Guardians, 343 (the developer) tries the most new things. So does this next generation Halo live up to hype? With no spoilers, the story revolves around everything in the universe, which means you need to play all the games, read all the books, and watch all the movies. Yeah, that’s a lot. But, for the hard core fan it’s a joy. Overall, the campaign is a treat for fans, but boring for a new player. Now the really good thing in Halo 5 is the multiplayer. For Halo veterans it’s a welcome home with the same rules. Everyone spawns with the same weapon, the moment it is picked off the field the game changes in an instant if the skilled player gets the weapon.

Players spawn their own weapons, vehicles, and power ups. Anything that helps them win. To get the weapons, they add in the req system. It is a card based system where you unlock armor, power weapons, skins, emblems and more. The challenge is to earn these packs. You either pay with the in-game req points or use your own hard earned cash. The multiplayer is that every month till June, 343 gives us free updates including new req items, maps, gamemodes and more all for free. While Call of Duty makes you pay for new maps, Halo 5 just gives them to you. Summing up Halo 5 in one word is impossible. There’s so much here that is astounding. It’s hard to rate Halo 5 since I am a fanboy, but I know a lot of people reading this are not. So I have two reviews here, one is for a casual gamer who loves the fps genre 7.4/10. But if you are like me and grew up with the series, then it’s a step on the right track for 343. Halo goes back to the glory days of Halo 3, Halo 5 rates a definite 9.5/10. My recommendation is go buy and try it out. If you’re a serious gamer, you will not, I repeat, not be disappointed! What’s Up With Sawyer 9

Recipes

Cooking For Kids

BY CHEF SOFIA DIAZ

D

o you love food? Of course you do. Who doesn’t love food? I love food. I love to eat. Lucky for me I also love to cook – and bake too. Today I’m going to share with you some recipes of a few of my favorites foods. These are easy and fun to make, plus you do not even need to use the stove. So, here we go:

mPeanut Butter Energy Bites

Ingredients: 1 ¾ cup of oats ¾ cup of natural peanut butter (that is not really thick) ⅓ cup of honey ⅓ cup of chocolate chips

First, stir together all of the ingredients in a bowl. Then put the mixture in the fridge for about two to three hours or in the freezer for about 30 minutes. Finally form the mixture into balls of whatever size you want. To store, you can put the energy bites in a Ziploc bag or a container in the fridge for up to three weeks or in the freezer for up to six months.

mBanana Ice Cream Ingredients: 1-3 bananas per 1 serving ½ cup of chocolate chips Milk if needed.

First cut the bananas into slices. Then freeze the bananas until they 12 What’s Up With Sawyer

are fully frozen. After they are fully frozen put them in the blender until they are smooth. Then you can put in chocolate chips if you want. If you want to make them into ice cream bites you can put them in a cupcake pan. After it is frozen you can eat it. It is a healthier version of ice cream. You can add toppings if you like.

mGranola-Yogurt Parfait Ingredients: 1 cup of any berry/ fruit 1 cup of any flavor low-fat yogurt 2-4 tablespoons of granola

In a glass, first add a little bit of the yogurt, then some of the fruit, finally add some of the granola. Keep on layering until you use everything.

mOvernight Oats In A Jar Ingredients: 1/4 cup of quick oats 1/2 cup of milk 1 tablespoon/teaspoon of any sweetener Any toppings you like.

First add the oats in a jar, then add the milk. Put in the fridge overnight. Then add toppings of your choice. There are tons more dishes you can create and share with your family and friends. Happy cooking and even happier eating!

Budget Cuts

Current Events

& STUDENTS

BY NAYELI FLORES & TONY ORTEGA

H

ave you ever wondered how budget cuts affect students? Well, we have, and today we are going to show you different ways on how we as students are affected by budget cuts. Budget cuts affect students in many ways. Schools get money for our books and other academic needs, but due to shortages, they cut off the sports programs and most of the other clubs. These clubs are more than just hobbies for kids. It’s important for kids to be involved in things other than academics. It helps us make friends and improve our skills at various activities. Being involved in more than one thing in school helps us be more active. Some parents are always complaining that all kids do now is play video games and text. We don’t have

the chance to do that if we are playing sports, dancing, writing poetry or creating articles for this magazine. If schools don’t get money, kids are going to be at home all day sitting down instead of running, exercising, playing games or just being in a classroom doing something that they like. Eighth graders are affected by budget cuts in another way as well. Usually graduating students have many field trips. Some schools have cancelled or greatly modified their outings because the monies are needed for other purposes. We think that measures need to be in place so that the students are able to get what they need to be successful on every level. What’s Up With Sawyer 13

Did You Know?

Cartoonists We BY AARON TAPIA

T

here are many famous cartoonists in the world. Among them are Walt Disney, Mike Judge, and Alex Hirsch. If there are so many cartoonists that means there are lots of opportunity for inspiration. Drawing cartoons is fun for everyone. Who wouldn’t like to pick up a pencil and draw something? You never know if that drawing will become famous just like the gentlemen below.

Love

Hirsch is the creator of “Gravity Falls.” “Gravity Falls” is on Disney XD, which is part of Disney. Hirsch is a young cartoonist who came up with one of the best kids show. “Gravity Falls” got nominated for a Teen Choice Award in 2013. The show was first aired in 2012. At 30, Hirsch is one of the youngest cartoonists working today. Hirsch came up with the idea for “Gravity Falls” when he was sent to his great uncle’s house over the summer with his twin sister (Ariel Hirsch). His great uncle lived in a house in the middle of the woods. Every day, Hirsch and his sister always went to the woods to seek the unnatural. But they never did. So he came up with the famous “Gravity Falls.”

Disney was actually born in Chicago. Once he was in a school play of Peter Pan but that’s not why he’s well known. He became famous because of Mickey Mouse. He created Mickey Mouse and won 22 Academy Awards throughout his lifetime. Disney was a very famous person who was responsible for many other cartoon characters children love today. Disney dropped out of high school when he was 16 in hopes of joining the army. Mickey Mouse was originally named Mortimer Mouse but the artist’s wife said that sounded too pompous. So Disney changed the mouse’s name to Mickey Mouse. Disney later died of lung cancer. 14 What’s Up With Sawyer

Judge is the creator of “King Of The Hill,” “Beavis and Butt-Head,” and “The Goode Family.” Judge works for Adult Swim. He is currently 53 years old. He was born on October 17, 1962. His full name is Michael Craig Judge. Judge married Francesca Morocco in 1989. He has three kids, two daughters, and one son. He was born in Guayaquil, Ecuador, and raised in New Mexico. Just like these three gentlemen, you can have an amazing idea and can become famous by doing something you love.

Sensational

Opinion

Sawyer School

BY DAISY GUERECA

E

verything Good Here

I have been in Sawyer school for six years now! My name is Daisy and I am a 5th grader. I have been a student at Sawyer since kindergarten. I have seen the teachers, the changes in this school and the improvements. I love art. I love the way the school does shows and classes of all grades and perform all kinds of things. Another thing I love about this school is that we have water fountains. I love this because if you have gym and forget your water bottle at home, there’s a water fountain right there. But there’s one thing I really love about the school, and that’s that there are programs that kids can join. Of course there’s not as many now because of the budget crisis. At this very moment I’m writing this from one of our clubs – the Magazine Club of course. Little More Work Ok, I talked about what I liked about school. Now it’s time to tell you what I think can be better. To be honest I don’t like all of the lunches. Listen lunch people, broccoli grosses my friend’s and me out! Actually, it doesn’t, but try to make it less wilted. Please.

There should be something to drink besides milk. I have milk every day at school. I know that it’s healthy, but I really would like a choice of beverages. I know that a lot of people would love to drink soda, but I don’t think that’s happening anytime soon. I like the student of the month celebration with the yogurt, however, I know there used to be pizza and soda. Is there anyway you can bring back the pizza and soda? I think the whole point of this is to celebrate student success, so maybe ask students of the month what they’d like at the lunch. B-days Here are five things that Sawyer should do when it’s someone’s B-day: 1. There should be no homework. 2. Listen to whatever music they like on headphones for a half an hour. 3. B-days should be announced over the intercom. 4. B-day students should get to have lunch with their best friend. 5. They should get a mini cupcake. Now that you’ve read my thoughts, think about your own suggestions. Together we can make Sawyer even more sensational! What’s Up With Sawyer 15
