Hiding An Illness From Children

BY KAYLA STYPINSKI, CHASE SCHOOL ELEMENTARY

B

reaking bad news is never easy. That’s why people should be more aware about parents not wanting their kids to know when they find out that they have cancer or another fatal disease. Finding out your parent can die can be traumatic for children. It may hurt the parent to tell their child. Someone has to be there to emotionally support the child because no child wants to feel abandoned. However, parents shouldn’t hide illness because it is not fair. Every kid should get a chance to know what’s going with their parents. There is a chance the child has to go on without their parent. What will they do then? I’m interested in this topic because I think that people should be more aware of parents hiding illnesses because tons of people get sick. I feel that other adults can help if the parent dies by adopting or fostering the child. 6 TRUE STAR JR.

According to cancer.org, “Age is an important factor in deciding what and how much you should tell a child about a cancer diagnosis. The guiding principle should be to tell the truth in a way that children are able to understand and prepare themselves for the changes that will happen in the family.” Cancer and other deadly diseases affect people all over the world every day of the year. By helping families think more passionately about what their kids’ future could be is very important in helping a kid feel normal again. Tellingkidsaboutcancer.com reports that kids will have a lot of reactions when they learn a parent is sick. Middle school kids may become worried about being separated from their parent. Teens may completely hide their feelings. It’s important parents tell children about their illness and stay involved in their child’s life.

the Mars Express…

“THESE ASPIRING MARTIANS PROVIDE THE WORLD WITH A GLIMPSE INTO WHO THE MODERN DAY EXPLORERS WILL BE. “ – BAS LANSDORP BY MONET-AALIYAH HARKINS, LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

H

ave you ever thought about moving to a different city, state or maybe even another planet? Earlier this year Mars One, a Netherlands based nonprofit organization, started training 100 people to live permanently on the fourth planet from the sun. Of the 660 semi-finalists the organization picked just 100 people, aged 18 and older, for the one-way trip to Mars. The whole point of this trip is see if Mars is suitable for human beings to live on. “The large cut in candidates is an important step towards finding out who has the right stuff to go to Mars,” said Bas Lansdorp, co-founder and CEO of Mars One. “These aspiring martians provide the world with a glimpse into who the modern day explorers will be.” Mars One will cost about $6 million and they are taking any kind of donations. America has donated $309,696. Every two years two people will go to Mars, but the only reason they’re not coming back is because they don’t have the money to send them

back. The mission would require bigger ships to journey back to Earth. The departure is for 2026. The people picked have their personal reasons for doing this, one of them being to make their life memorable. Many students weighed in on whether or not they would go to live on Mars forever. Beatriz Mata, 12, said, “No, because you never know if life is sustainable.” Others reasons students gave had to do with missing home. Alexee Aitken, age 12, said, “I wish to stay with my family and friends.” Isabelle Dizon, 12, felt the same as Aitken. “I would get homesick,” said Dizon. Lots of thoughts and ideas lingered among the students about leaving Earth to move to a different planet about 140,000,000 miles away. Would you make the trip, and if you went, what would be your reason for going? For more information about this adventure of a lifetime visit www.mars-one.com. TRUE STAR JR. 7

Not as Dead as You Think

POTENTIAL TO NOT ONLY EXPAND YOUR VOCABULARY, BUT ALSO HELP DEFINE THE MANY BY BLAKE CARNES, WHITNEY YOUNG ACADEMIC CENTER

S

ome people consider the language of Latin to be useless. Their excuse: it’s a dead language! Why would anybody need to learn it? Why? Because it’s much more useful than one would think. English takes many of its roots directly from Latin. Latin has the potential to not only expand your vocabulary, but also help define the many tricky words derived from it. For example, let’s take the word “risible.” It may seem hard at first, but Latin reveals that the “ris” part of it comes from the Latin word meaning “laugh.” From there it’s pretty clear that the word means “laughable.” Julian Pomeranz, 13, has enjoyed learning Latin for the past eight years. “Latin’s derivatives have helped improve my grammar as well as prepare me with parts of speech and conjugating and declining verbs and nouns, respectively,” said Pomeranz. Magistra Wender, a Latin and English teacher at Whitney Young, said, “Latin has helped me with English grammar and vocabulary. It has made me a more precise communicator, both in speaking and writing.” 8 TRUE STAR JR.

TRICKY WORDS DERIVED FROM IT.

Latin can also boost your chance of getting into college, and beyond that, getting a job. In the article “Calder Classics,” michael C. Behnke, vice President for enrollment at the university of Chicago, said, “[A student who studies Latin] is likely to be disciplined, have a strong basis for further learning, [and] be a little more creative toward intellectual pursuits than most. You’ve chosen Latin. You’re different.” Jonah Blake, 13, believes that Latin makes a person appear smarter. He said, “Latin looks shiny on resumes.” Even many popular careers like law and medicine use a multitude of Latin terms. Most people consider Latin to be that other, nerdy language that nobody wants to take, while in fact it can have an amazing impact on your life. With a few years of Latin you can get into better high schools, colleges, and get better jobs than you would otherwise. Depending on your future occupation, knowing Latin makes your job much easier to understand the terms being said.

Having Older Parents vs. Younger Parents

BY DIOVION GALLIMORE & MAGALY MURO, LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE

re younger parents better than older parents? Young parents under 25, especially those in their teens, can be seen as “not responsible,” or “too young to be parents.” When people become parents they take care of

life is waiting to have them. A good age to have children can vary depending on your circumstances. Many believe a good time to be around your late 30s and early 40s. According to parenting.com, women 30 to 34 have the

resources and the energy to start a family and they often feel emotionally ready to begin a family. However, the risk of Down syndrome at age 30 is 1 in 952, and the miscarriage rate is 11.7 percent. At age 35 to 39 the chance of having a cesarean section doubles, because labor tends to take longer with older women. Emotionally women are ready to have a baby, and are more patient and understanding than they were in their 20s. Having twins or triplets increases significantly in your late 30s as well.

“If the baby was planned or not planned, it really doesn’t matter what age the parent is because they are still going to parent their kids like older parents would,” said Kiara Green, 13. Desarae Taylor, 17, who recently graduated from Excel Academy weighed in on possibly being an older parent. “I rather have my children in my 30s. By that time I will have the money and the knowledge to correctly raise my child(ren) and I’ll be able to give them the great childhood every child should have,” Taylor said. If you want to have children, then your best bet for insuring your children have a great

When it comes to parenthood most people judge the parent based on their age, but the age shouldn’t matter. As long as parents are doing what’s best for their child and they are treating them well, it doesn’t matter how old they are. Kids need the support that their parents give them no matter if they are young or old. TRUE STAR JR. 9

“Sword Art Online,”

A Great Game Goes Bad

BY XAVIER RIOS, CHASE ELEMENTARY

T

his review is about my favorite anime called “Sword Art Online.” If you are ever thinking of watching it then read my review. Warning: There may be some spoilers! “Sword Art Online” is my most favorite show by far. It is epic! Let’s see if I make you want to start watching it after reading my review. “Sword Art Online” was created by Reki Kawahara in 2002 and illustrated by ABEC. “Sword Art Online” was brought to Netflix and has a total of 25 episodes. The show’s storyline places viewers in the year 2022 and thousands of people get trapped in a new virtual MMORPG. When the main character, Kirito, realizes that death in the game means death in the real world he must survive the game as best he can.

You guys are probably saying, “Wait, this show takes place in a game?” You are right, but it’s not like a game you play and are able to get off and do whatever afterwards. In “Sword Art Online” a game is released called Sword Art Online (SAO). Thanks to the technology, people were able to go inside the game and play it. In order to leave, they have to hit the virtual logout button to end the game. During the show, Kirito helps a player new to the game. The new guy was going to leave the game to get some pizza that he ordered, but noticed that the logout button wasn’t on his main menu, neither was it on Kirito’s. When the game’s creator, Kayaba Akihiko, makes his appearance in the game and gives a warning to every player that the missing logout button was not a mishap or bug the excitement really begins. I give this show five out of five stars.

THE INACCURACY OF

The Spider-Man

Comics to Their Movies

BY ALBA OSORIO, CHASE ELEMENTARY

T

en years separate the movies created about Spider-Man. But there’s so much that’s different between the first movie and then the reboot. Mostly, there are inaccuracies. If you have read the comic books, then you know some things were a little off. The Amazing Spider-Man (with Andrew Garfield), which came out in 2012 is more accurate to the comic books than Spider-Man (with Tobey Maguire). The Amazing Spider-Man is more accurate in the way Uncle Ben died. In this version he died trying to find Peter when he walked out of the house to go to the store. In Spider-Man the same thing happened, but Uncle Ben was stabbed in this one, and in The Amazing Spider-Man I believe he was shot. I bring this point up because in the comics Uncle Ben was shot by a guy trying to rob his house. No matter what, he was murdered. Another example would be his first love, who was originally Gwen Stacy, from the movie version of The Amazing Spider-Man. When The

Green Goblin killed her he decided to marry Mary Jane, which is exactly what happened in The Amazing Spider-Man. Craveonline.com points out that there are some inaccuracies as well. One had to do with Captain George Stacy. The Stacy’s weren’t even mentioned in the first movie. In the second movie, Captain George Stacy did a 1-80. “In the comics, Captain Stacy is a huge supporter of Spider-Man. He defends his actions and thinks of Spider-man as a hero. He also strongly supports the relationship between Peter Parker and Gwen,” the site said. In the movie, Captain Stacy was not a fan of Spider-Man. He thought he was a vigilante. The inaccuracies in the movies and comics can be debated for a long time because there are so many. Those discrepancies can turn some diehard Spider-Man fans off forever. Then again, many fans may not care one bit as long as the storyline is good.

No Stress:

Not This Summer and Not During

SCHOOL

BY ZOË H. MITCHELL, LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

T

he sun is finally shining, and most importantly, you no longer get migraines when thinking about how much school you have left. Whether you graduated from grammar school or high school, got a score back from a standardized test, or just made it through another year of school, congratulations are in order for your accomplishments. Remember this: Don’t stress too much or it might lead to some serious problems. Northwestern University conducted research on Chicago Public School students, funded by the National Institute of Health. The “Cities Stress and Learning Study” concluded that more than 300 students aged 11 to 18 experienced as much stress as a working adult. Graduating 8th graders said they felt the pressure. “I’m so glad school is over soon,” said Arturo DeLeon, 14. “School was so stressful. My head exploded!” Tahye Pitter, 14, agreed that the school year was challenging and stressful. “Oh yeah man, it was so hard to keep up with the work,” Pitter said. If that information was not shocking enough, University of Maryland, College Park also researched students for stress levels. This time at least 10,000 first graders were analyzed. Their stress caused a negative impact on the way they paid attention to their lessons, stayed on task

when working on activities or worksheets, and were able to move from one activity to another. This is very important because as a student of any age, you are most likely exposed to these stressful realities. “Safe environments for learning” and “school families” don’t seem to be the truth anymore. Instead peer pressure, academic and emotional stress, as well as physical stress from heavy book bags, seem to be the new reality of education. It’s pretty safe to assume that whatever grade you are in, you stress out during the school year. Sure, you have some breaks, but jeez, add up the days you are in school and you definitely need a summer break. Once school lets out, don’t go stressing or over-planning your summer break; instead relax by taking a deep breath and reflecting over your finished year. TRUE STAR JR. 15

TALKS ABOUT ACTING &

“THE THUNDERMANS” BY MAGALY MURO, LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

I

t’s been five years since Diego Velazquez starred in his first movie Extraordinary Measures, and since then the 13-year-old said he wants to make movies forever. Currently, Velazquez plays “Billy Thunderman” on the Nickelodeon’s “The Thundermans,” and having the cast and crew along with his family has really helped him. “The Thundermans” are a super hero family and Velazquez’s character has super speed, cyclone spinning, and true sight. Velazquez said he was inspired to become an actor because his mother’s job as a stylist interacted with the work of actors. He saw the fun the actors were having playing different characters and decided he wanted to do the same thing. Despite the fun, the Portland native said it was hard work landing his first role, but it helped him feel better about his acting skills. “I think getting the part in my first audition definitely did help my selfesteem because it’s really lucky getting a part on your first audition, especially in a movie with such big actors,” Velazquez said. “That doesn’t really happen a lot, so I’m very lucky for getting to do what I do and getting a part on my very first audition.” Velazquez said the best part of his acting career is having his friends and family help, inspire and support him. He said his biggest inspiration and supporter is his mother. “Without my mom I couldn’t have been where I am now,” he said. 18 TRUE STAR JR.

While he loves acting, he also enjoys special effects makeup, skateboarding, martial arts and hanging out with his friends. He is also very active on social media. yrel Jackson Williams may be known best for his work in the acting field, more specifically Disney XD’s “Lab Rats.” But as we all know, there is a person behind the character – a person with interests, inspirations and aspirations. Some of those interests are the same as yours and mine. “I’m a pretty big gamer,” the 18-year-old revealed. “So I like to play video games. I’m really into books and comics too. Sci-fi or fantasy interests me. I play guitar in my free time. I am also on social media quite a bit in my free time.” Williams takes working in the same field as his brothers – Tyler Williams from “Everyone Hates Chris” fame and Tylen from Nickelodeon’s “Instant Mom” – in a very positive light. “I think it’s pretty cool cause we are all trying to do the same thing,” Williams said. “And we can share experiences, like help each other out, but we aren’t all working on the same project which is pretty cool. So we can draw experience from different areas and bring it together, and help each other out.” 20 TRUE STAR JR.

Williams, who plays “Leo” on the show, said being on television has changed his life greatly because now he thinks more about what could happen when he goes to the mall or the movie theater with friends. The fame has helped to shape his humility and appreciate being recognized as an actor. “Ever since I got started on ‘Lab rats’ I’d get noticed in public, and it’s always really cool, but it’s a bit of an adjustment,” he said. “It’s odd at first but always a blessing. ...It’s changed my life for the better.” Career wise, his inspiration is Will Smith. Williams said he admires how Smith transitioned from being a rapper to a blockbuster actor. “I am really inspired by him acting and entertainment wise.” Williams added that his parents are also big inspirations to him because they are so supportive. As for the future, Williams stated that he wants to possibly attend a film school in Los Angeles and major in writing. He has already written a few sketches and short films. The future is looking bright for Williams, and we look forward to seeing what he does next.

he money-hungry, scheming mastermind named “James” from Nickelodeon’s “Instant Mom,” is played by the talented Tylen Jacob WIlliams. He describes the character as a good kid, who’d do anything to get money. Williams enjoys working with his “Instant Mom” cast stating, “It’s a great experience. They’re like my second family.” Williams comes from a family full of talented actors who happen to resemble one another. Looking like his brothers – Tyler Williams, best known as Chris, from “Everyone Hates Chris” and Tyrel Williams from Disney XD’s “Lab Rats” – can be challenging. “[People confused us] all the time,” Williams said. “People told me I was the guy from ‘Lab Rats,’ or ‘Look, it’s Chris’... Even though the show came out when I was like 2. But, over the years it started to die down.” While on the lines of family, the New York native said that having a family full of actors is pretty cool. You know that they have your back, and you always have someone to depend on and discuss details with he said.

The 13-year-old describes himself as a crazy individual but really enjoys relaxing at home. He prefers New York, hinting that the food might be a reason for his choice. Williams’ current ambition is only acting for now, but if he weren’t acting he would probably write scripts instead and remain in the industry. In the span of five years, Williams sees himself somewhere in a movie, doing theater or performing on Broadway. Williams is always optimistic about all his experiences and is inspired by his many different encounters. “There are many inspirations everywhere. There are inspirations all around me. I use those inspirations to motivate myself,” Williams stated. The three brothers have thought of creating their own show a few times, but it isn’t clearly outlined to happen in the near future. Williams said if he could create his ideal movie or television show his choice of actors would be people who specialize in comedy, like Will Ferrell and Kevin Hart, for example. David Bloom

SHOWCASES TALENT ON NETFLIX & AMAZON BY ZOË H. MITCHELL, LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

f you haven’t checked out “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street,” you definitely should. David Bloom plays “Stanley,” a kid who others see as the most unluckiest kid, and they are literally running away from him. Now, the 14-year-old is working on the new Netflix show “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp” (2015), the follow-up to “Wet Hot American Summer” (2001). True Star caught up with Bloom to learn more about the new show. True Star: What do you believe your strengths and weaknesses are as an actor? Bloom: I guess I’ll start with my weaknesses. Sometimes I’ll speak too fast, and I’ll stumble over words or I’ll say a line that doesn’t come out right. It’ll sound really good in my head, but then when I say it it just sounds different than how I heard it. Okay, now strengths: People tell me I’m funny, but I can do serious lines well. I’m very consistent in my acting abilities too, which makes me really enjoy drama and comedy like “Wet Hot American Summer: First Day of Camp.” True Star: Are you still learning who you are as a person, or has acting helped you figured that out? Bloom: I feel like I’m still learning; I’m always learning about who I am and growing as a person. Acting has taught me a lot of life lessons and has helped me define who I want to be so that I can improve. 24 TRUE STAR JR.

True Star: What do you want to be? Bloom: I’d love to stay in this [acting] business. I love acting, so I guess I just want to keep doing what I’m doing. True Star: You want to be an actor and you are in your school choir. Would you ever do Broadway? Bloom: Well, I’ve done some theater but not much of it. But given the opportunity, I’d love to do that when I get older. You can check out more of Bloom in “Gortimer Gibbon’s Life on Normal Street” streaming on Amazon.

Left to right: Witt Lowry, Phora, and Logic BY ELTON AGUILAR, CHASE ELEMENTARY

W

hile everyone is talking about Nicki Minaj or Drake, there are some emerging rappers from all over the country you need to know about. The people that I am referring to are Witt Lowry, Phora and Logic. Since June 2011, Witt Lowry, born Mark Richard Jr., has been releasing music. His alter ego Witty has a very energetic feel and he has many honest songs. Currently, Lowry has been releasing romantic songs on his YouTube channel and some can be purchased at iTunes, like the his new song “Move On.” He has also been on the rise in hiphop with many passionate fans that are sharing his music with other people. You can follow him on Twitter @WittLowry #TEAMWITT. Another amazing artist that has impressive music is Phora. If you really want to know more about him you should just go straight to his music. He is known for his lyrics, which are mostly about his childhood struggles and his memories. This has gotten him a tremendous amount of respect from

fans who love his music. Check out his Facebook page by typing PhoraOne in the search box. Logic, a 25-year-old rapper, has recently been making headlines with his debut album Under Pressure. Born Sir Robert Bryson Hall II in Gaithersburg, MD, Logic initially called himself Psychological. “I just loved this word because it was about the mind and I knew that’s what I wanted my music to consist of; something that really challenges the mind,” Logic said in 2012 interview. Later he shortened his name to just Logic. One big influence he has had is famed jazz singer Frank Sinatra whom he highly respects. This is an amazing and talented rapper who has been expanding his career since the age of 13 with his mentor Solomon Taylor. Visit his website at mindoflogic.com or his Instagram page under logic301. Fair warning: These rappers do use curse words and references in their lyric that parents may not approve. TRUE STAR JR. 25

Rock Bands

Aren’t Horrible

BY MAYRA Y. PEREZ & XAVIER RIOS, CHASE ELEMENTARY

H

ave you ever listened to a rock band? Rock bands are super awesome, even if some people don’t like them. Sometimes people respond to the music like “ew, they suck” or “who listens to that nowadays?” Many believe rock is only for people who have no life, people who are depressed and are into the emo, punk or goth scenes. There are different categories that can be considered rock music such as soft, similar to pop music, or hard, a distinctive and classified sound like metal, alternative, ska, punk, grunge and screamo among others. But all of them are amazing. Rock has evolved, and the latest types include post-hardcore. “Rock Bands right now aren’t really ‘rock’ like they were in the 1980s and the

1990s,” claims Arokar from Harmonixmusic.com. “There are still very good styles of rock music out there like the Foo Fighters, Nickelback, Green Day, Black Keys and Grunge Era.” With so many genres, everyone who is really into rock has one type or more rock categories to choose from that motivates them to keep following their dreams. Then there are those who just help in other ways. Vic Fuentes from the band Pierce The Veils said, “The scars don’t mean you lost the game, [they] mean you are strong enough to live in this hateful world. No matter how deep you have cried, you have to keep yourself on track and remember that storms don’t last forever and [they] become a wonderful life story.” Rocker Mitch Lucker said, “Keep listening to music cause it gets you through everything, I promise.” TRUE STAR JR. 27

“YOU CAN BE THE GREATEST IF YOU TRY. HALF-DOING THINGS DOESN’T GET YOU THE WIN.” – COACH RANDY GILES

easley Elementary School basketball team won the championship against Vanderpoel Elementary School this past season, and the 5th, 6th, 7th and 8th grade teams are currently undefeated. The team will celebrate their win with a banquet. Coach Randy Giles, 35, has led the team for eight years and he said he motivates his players by training them. “Training is the best way to motivate them. If they feel prepared enough then they can succeed at what they put their minds to.” The former football player started off coaching football, but switched over to basketball because he enjoyed it more. When asked what he would do if he was not coaching, he revealed that he would be teaching because he loves being around children. Giles’ said his main goal was getting the kids into good high schools. He wants them to succeed and get as many opportunities as they can through basketball. Giles said he is very proud of his team. He loves the dedication students, like Antonio Reeves, have to athletics and education. Giles said 34 TRUE STAR JR.

Reeves was a major impact on the team because of the winning shots he made. The 8th grader mentioned that winning the championship was an awesome feeling. “They’re a great team and it felt awesome being the one the coach chose because he could have picked anyone, and I’m very appreciative,” said Reeves about representing his team. The future Kenwood Academy student scored about 10 to 15 shots per game. He said the best part of playing with his team is that they all had the same goal, which was to win and go out as champions. But, they are all also unselfish members. Next year we can expect more championship titles from the Beasley Bees. The coach ends with saying to all aspiring basketball players out there, “You can be the greatest if you try. Half-doing things doesn’t get you the win. Stay focused and work towards your goal.” With the Beasley alumni and Chicago Bulls NBA Star, Derrick Rose, coming from the same starting point, you know that these players are in for a great couple of years.

Is Oppression

THE NORM?

BY DIOVION GALLIMORE LINDBLOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

B

LACK LIVES MATTER! All lives matter, but we are currently focused on a certain group this decade. So many African-American men have been killed because of police brutality. It leaves the caring mother worried if her son is next, or the protective sister wondering if she’ll see her brother when she gets back home from school. Why are so many young Black men killed? Ignorance has a massive affect on this situation. Many African-American men are killed because they made the officer “feel scared for their life.” Maybe teaching these men how to act when approached by an officer will help them spare their own lives. The world we live in today makes it mandatory that young Black men have to learn about oppression. Oppression is the norm. How will we save our Black men? TRUE STAR JR. 37

SCHOOL SPIRIT

Favoritism to

Upperclassmen BY MAGALY MURO, LINDBLOOM MATH & SCIENCE ACADEMY

I

t has been shown that students believe that schools show favoritism to the upperclassmen. Schools might show favoritism to upperclassmen by giving them more opportunities and by letting them do more things than the younger kids get to do. Students from Lindblom Math & Science Academy weighed in on whether this is the case.

“YES, WE DO GET FAVORITISM. THE 7TH GRADERS FEEL ENTITLED TO THINGS THAT WE HAD TO WAIT FOR…” – KAYLIN DAVIS

Aaliyah Deanes, a 7th grader, said, “it’s like in our culinary colloquium where only high schoolers can join but the Academic Center can’t.” So schools do show favoritism with more than just one thing, according to the 13-year-old. She thinks that it is unfair to give high schoolers more privileges because if they weren’t going to give the Academic Center the same amount of privileges than what was the point on having an Academic Center? The Lindblom Academic Center program has accelerated courses for 7th and 8th grade students so they can learn to work at the high school level by providing rigorous college work, have the opportunity to learn Mandarin, Chinese, and Arabic and to take part in science labs. Kaylin Davis, a current freshman at Lindblom, said, “Yes, we do get favoritism. The 7th graders feel entitled to things that we had to wait for, and we are just older so we are more mature and we are more used to the learning environment.”

When it comes to Lindblom having favoritism to the upperclassmen it depends on how certain students feel about it. It also depends on the student’s opinion because in the end it is the student’s opinion that counts. It seems to be that the real issue is that the younger class believes that there is favoritism, but the upperclassmen believe that everything is fair. TRUE STAR JR. 39
