Xi An IKEA Centre Location: Xi An, China Year: 2017 - present Current status: On going, schematic design (RIBA Stage 3 equivalent) Project type: Retail/mixed-use Size: 430,000sqm Scope: Architecture from Concept Design, Schematic Design to Preliminary Design (RIBA Stage 1 to Stage 4) Role and responsibility: Participating as project architect as well as document controller. Working under the guidance of design director on internal layout, liaising with technical consultants as well as client’s internal teams. Monitoring the production schedule and the management of document quality as well as Revit drawing production.

Gestures of Exchange: Measure the Corporeal and the Incorporeal MArch thesis, 2011 - 2013. The thesis seeks to recalibrate the lost exchange between Olbia and one of its core industries – granite industry – and to investigate the financial affiliations of granite material in terms of solidity and social status. The proposal includes a centrally located Granite Terminus, Stock Exchange in South Bay and Harbour Authority at the industrial harbour. Together the three buildings bring up the discourse on both corporeal and incorporeal exchange at three different scales: city scale, Sardinian scale and onto the global economic scale. The thesis is also in collaboration on thetic level with Nia Puliyel, whose projects (Fish Market, Bread Market and Linen Market) provide a much smaller scale of exchange network.

The proposal focuses on how climate change and the green revolution are combining to create a global crisis in land use. To use land more effectively, communities will have to learn to become more self-sufficient. The environmentally appealing qualities of the traditional Chinese house and farm provide a model for a potentially revolutionary inversion of the drift to the city provided that: 1) ubiquitous information technology is harnessed to complement and enrich the quality of rural life and, 2) the countryside itself can be farmed more intelligently. 36

Redeveloping the Moscow Exhibition Centre (VDNH) 2014 Young Planning Professionals International Workshop, Moscow The annual week-long international workshop selects young professionals with architecture or planning background to take part, and this year’s focus has been placed on drawing up new strategies for the Moscow Exhibition Centre site and its historical pavilions. Divided into three groups, I was involved in Heritage group which emphasizes on the idea of juxtaposing new-built projects and existing architectural monuments. V E LO P M E N T DE ND R ES EA RC H

A

`The past is just a second away´

VDNH offers place for the past, the old past and the new past. It is a place that shows history, and allows to learn from history. Through renovation, maintenance, and education, light is shed on the heritage characteristics of VDNH. In addition, new spatial and architectural interventions, and innovative sustainable approaches and methods on heritage conservation are given room here; boosting the open-ended nature of VDNH.

With all the different time layers, VDNH cannot be regarded as merely an exhibition space. VDNH is an ongoing narrative of Russian modern history. Wandering through VDNH, an observer walks down a time line showing important milestones in the making of Russian identity. It also shows that VDNH continuously adapted through time to the needs and wishes of its users, and it will continue to do so. VDNH tells a story, but a story with an open end. History is not something static, but evolving and dynamic. What is new today, is history tomorrow.

Strategy

One of the largest problems of VDNH is the preservation of heritage. In many cases, pavilions and other structures need reconstruction after a long time of little maintenance and neglect. When VDNH becomes an education hub for 41 heritage, this problem is turned into a chance. Reconstruction of the pavilions, provides a real time laboratory to test new approaches and methods on conservation of heritage. In the meanwhile, the education hub needs facilities. These


Detailed plan Pavilions 48, 49, 50, 52, and 54 are integrated under a uniform glass dome. This creates an internal space filled with light which can house a university, a library or an art museum. In some places, we restore green spaces of the park. The faรงade of the Oceanarium will be transformed in ...? Originally, the Industry Square had a six-sided form. We restore the original form by adding light constructions to the existing buildings. These will designate the historical borders of the square and recreate the original space. In time VDNH lost some of the pavilions, leaving gaps in the structure of the central alley. These gaps will be filled by temporary pavilions. The new additional pavilions reflect the architectural styles of VDNH in variety, yet present contemporary styles. There are pavilions for instance in organic and deconstructivist style. The pavilions are light structures built with materials as metal, glass, and wood. The structures are temporary to allow constant experimenting with new ideas, concepts, and styles. The height of the new structures does not exceed two floors. The design of the main entrance zone has to be flexible allowing room for variety, seasonal transformation and use of temporary objects. Part of the current exhibition complex is to be removed to open an alternative entrance to the park. This would also do justice to the original Arch of the Main Entrance from 1939. 70
