He had to be credible. “Ed Sheeran wrote his songs, so I wanted to write my own songs,” Shawn recalled. “I was just really eager and really excited to make music,” Shawn remembers of his debut album’s recording. His manager, Andrew Gertler, agreed: “Shawn had written a bunch of songs on his own. From the very beginning, he was set on the fact that he was going to write his own music and that he was a songwriter. When we heard some of these songs, everyone’s ears perked up. Many of the stars are “Vine Famous”, and the MAGCON tour provides the perfect opportunity for them to meet their thousands of fans. Before the MAGCON family tour whisked Shawn away from his real family, Shawn played his first ever concert was on 26 October 2013. “First time I played to an audience was this random day in Toronto where a couple people from Vine were going to meet their

fans,” he recalled. “That’s when everything went from something impossible to a very tangible dream.” During all of Shawn’s previous tours – ShawnsFirstHeadline and Shawn Mendes World Tour – as well as the Live on Tour with Austin Mahone and even as Taylor Swift’s support act for her 1989 tour, there has been one consistent factor at every show: the cries of “We want Shawn! We want Shawn!” from the crowd. But now, out on his own massive world tour, these cries and screams are even more deafening, prompting Shawn to shout, “I cannot hear myself at all right now. I love that so much.” It was during his now-famous Madison Square Garden show (sold out in five minutes) on Saturday, 10 September 2016, that Shawn knew that he had become a major star. “Standing on stage at Madison Square Garden was one of those moments when I knew I had made it. Just looking around like ‘Woah, this is real’, and seeing so many people there for me. It was surreal and crazy!”
