978-0-23300-513-3 237 x 185 mm 200 images & artworks £18.99

Published in association with the National Army Museum, The Battle of Waterloo marks an event that changed the fate of Europe irrevocably. Heavily illustrated, it includes reproductions of contemporary letters and documents, and offers a compellingly written telling of the battle and the Hundred Days campaign that finally ended the career of Napoleon. A topography of the battlefield complements a description of the fighting, which culminated in the rout of Napoleon’s Imperial Guard, an elite unit that had never experienced defeat. Concluding with an examination of the consequences for the politics of Europe, The Battle of Waterloo is a detailed and visually stunning companion to one of history’s most decisive battles.

NAPOLEON and

HIS ARMY

N

APOLEON’S ARMY AT WATERLOO was not the finely honed weapon that he had wielded in the Austerlitz campaign of 1805. In that year, he had spent the summer drilling his men to the point of exhaustion. Troops would have gone through the complex series of manoeuvres that warfare in this age of musket and cannon demanded as if they were second nature. Officers would have known the strengths and weaknesses of every one of their men. Perhaps most important of all, Napoleon’s senior commanders would have understood his thinking and the reasons behind his orders. His subordinate generals – or marshals as they were known in the French army – would have shared Napoleon’s strategic vision and he could have trusted them to make decisions that meshed perfectly with his plan of operations. These were all powerful factors for his crowning success against the Austrian and Russian armies that year, but a decade later at Waterloo it would be the shortcomings in all these departments that meant Napoleon was unable to replicate his former glories. Napoleon had also changed in himself. Although accounts differ, several witnesses noticed that there was something in their commander that burned less brightly. One of his staff officers Colonel Pétiet found that Napoleon could no longer spend long

hours in the saddle. The man who had once scoured every fold in the landscape, visited every unit, and stayed awake all night dictating orders, now needed time to sit and rest. Pétiet wrote that Napoleon’s “corpulence”, his dull pallid complexion and his stiff gait made him seem “quite different from the General Bonaparte I had known at the beginning of my career.” Napoleon was not the general he once had been. Perhaps the French army’s greatest weakness, though, was the shortage of quality among Napoleon’s subordinate commanders. His marshals, once the band of brothers who had been the key to his success, were now

Right: Nicolas Soult,

Duke of Dalmatia. He joined the French army as a private but rose rapidly to become one of Napoleon’s best marshals. At Waterloo he took on the role of chief of staff. He was a pale reflection of Napoleon’s legendary chief of staff LouisAlexandre Berthier, who had refused to rejoin the Emperor.

EXPLORING THE DNA BLUEPRINTS THAT MAKE US WHO WE ARE What is a genetic superhero and could you be one? Is all your DNA important or is a load of it just junk? Can genetics inform your love life, your mental health and your ability to grow a tail? How to Code a Human takes the reader on a mind-bending journey through the world of the double helix, examining how our DNA encodes our genes and makes us unique. Covering all aspects of modern genetics from the evolution of our species to inherited diseases, “junk” MEET YOUR GENOME DNA, genetic engineering and the intricacies of the molecular processes inside our cells, this is a beautiful, visual guide to the code of life. CHAPTER 1:

From cells to DNA

The human genome is made up of roughly 20,000 genes, encoded within billions of “letters” of DNA. But what is actually in there?

Let us start with DNA itself. More formally known as deoxyribonucleic acid, DNA is a type of chemical known as a polymer and is made up of repeating sub-units called nucleotides. Each nucleotide consists of three components: a sugar (deoxyribose); a small group of atoms called a phosphate group; and one of four different chemicals known as bases. These are usually referred to by the initials “A”, “C”, “T” and “G”, which stand for adenine, cytosine, thymine and guanine. Human beings have a staggering 2.2 metres (just over seven feet) of DNA in almost every body cell, broken up into 23 matching pairs

You receive one of each chromosome pair from your mother and one from your father at the moment of fertilization, when the sperm meets the egg. Each egg and sperm cell contains three billion “letters” of DNA in its 23 chromosomes – known as a haploid human genome – which come together to create the 23 pairs of chromosomes, making a diploid (combined) genome of six billion letters. Twenty-two of these pairs are known as autosomes, while the 23rd pair is the sex chromosome – XX in females and XY in males. This complete set of DNA, which is virtually the same in each cell, is your genome – the DNA code that defines who you are. During the 1950s, the US/UK molecular biologist team James Watson and Francis Crick – together with Rosalind Franklin, an English chemist, and physicist Maurice Wilkins – discovered that DNA usually forms a double helix, like a twisted ladder (see page 11). The sides of the ladder are long chains of sugar and phosphate, while the rungs are the bases. These bases can only combine in certain ways, with “A” always pairing with “T” and “C” always matching up with “G”. Just as the order of letters in a recipe book determines the ingredients a cook needs for a pie and how to bake it, the order of bases in DNA (known as the sequence) carries important information about the biological recipes our cells need in order to live, multiply, specialize and even die. These recipes are our genes.

Above / Human cells contain 23 pairs of chromosomes. One in each pair is inherited from the mother and one from the father.
