who am I? Hi, I am angelika. I am 24 years old. I was born in a small Bavarian village in Germany. After living & working in Berlin, Rotterdam and Hong Kong, I am currently finishing my last design Studio at the Graz University of Technology. Before starting to write my thesis on informal urban living structures in the backdrop of today‘s complex intertwining political and economic world. I am in love with coffee — espresso doppio black — travelling, architecture and urbanism, design, music, cities, the underwater world, photography and life. To discover & to be surprised is what drives me in life. That‘s why I am eager to learn something new every day. I am more than proud & probably blushing when my friends call me an inspirational, open-minded person. Before I am starting my thesis and hence, last year in academic surroundings, I am searching for another exciting and challenging hands-on experience. I‘d love to work with you.

The aim of the project was to design a building for a new music school in Graz, which needed to fit in the narrow space between two existing buildings. We decided to develop an ecologically sensitive design based on a wooden structure, without losing sight of strong requirements for a design that offers remarkable room for the students as well as for the inhabitants.

Tsi Ni Tang is a soon to be art village in the Guangzhou district. Local Artists, that are already working at the empty warehouse area want to revive and redevelop the old industrial site. This is a proposal for the redevelopment of one of the sites‘ empty warehouses. The design focuses on the exploration of the combination, integration and new interpretation of old and new. The strong implemented free form stands as a juxtaposition placed in the building. It attracts with tempting but invisible qualities from the outside, next to the bare old concrete ruin that is stripped down to few left horizontal and vertical elements that have its very own magic.

For a long time the gasometer area in Vienna has been a forgotten between the city and the airport. The new tower forms part of an operation to intensify the area and to reconnect it with the surroundings and the city. This proposal seeks to fill the urban voids around the gasometer with new program and mark the site with a higher volume.

„Rural Life“ - a term that is not attractive to most of the people nowadays. More and more residents - especially young people - of the countryside are moving to urban areas. A lot of communes are struggling with vacancies. The demographic change enhances this effect even. Politics recognized the need of action meanwhile and were planning to strengthen rural centers. Exactly this context can be found as well in
Arnfels: The small village close to the Slovenian border is left vacant in the very center of the village. This concept proposes an idea how to encounter this issue of migration. It is an idea that does not just want to implement something new but primarily strengthen the village with already existing qualities. The main focus points are art_culture, slow tourism, and social_regional aspects.

formfinding process section & elevation atmosphere at the barn utilization concept
01 ∙ 03 ∙ 02 ∙ 04 ∙
art_culture The main design intervention and new interpretation of the building are made to integrate the gallery. The „parasite“ that grows out of house 15 leads the visitors upstairs and from the upper level of house 14. The currently incoherent buildings are as a result of this connected in a new - built as well as a functional way. slow_tourism To fill the „Haus am Fels“ with life again, there two other substantive ideas to supplement the gallery function. One is the tourism aspect. The empty barn at the backside of the two houses has a unique atmosphere close to the rock. This atmos-
phere is perfect for small rooms that can be rented to visiting guests. social_regional The second aspect to revive the building in a long-lasting way is the social-regional aspect. The idea is to integrate the residents of Arnfels. With different social-sustainable projects like the already existing „Klapothek“, or „Kama“ this can happen. For a more detailed view on the utilization concept, have a look at the diagram below. With the combination of this three aspects, a complete package should arise that attracts visitors as well as residents. The revitalization of Arnfels is just possible with as many parties involved as possible.

When working with an existing building, the first thing I usually do is trying to perceive as much as possible. It takes some time to get a first impression of the mood, vibe, and story of a place. Especially if it is such a special one as the empty factory at Tsi Ni Tang, we were

able to work with for this project. The studio was set up in three different phases. In the first phase, we explored different ways of model making on a topic we had to pick according to our personal interests. During the second phase, we focused on the urban context of the soon to be Tsi Ni Tang Art Village. We did a comparative research on art villages in the Asian context and developed an urban strategy for the site. After a one-week robotics workshop where we had the chance to explore the possibilities of digital fabrication, we started the design phase combining all learnings from the previous phases. — The design itself is focusing on the exploration of the combination, integration and new interpretation of old and new. The strong implemented free form stands as a juxtaposition positioned in the building. It attracts with tempting but invisible qualities from the outside, next to the bare old concrete ruin that is stripped down to few left horizontal and vertical elements that have its very own magic.

phase o1 — explorative model making During the introduction phase of the studio — leaving the context of the existing out of our mind for a while — I focused on soft textile appearing textures, solidified movement and contradiction in appearance and perception. I explored different materials and several ways of model making — but especially atmospheric qualities, that I reintegrate in the final design process.

[ i n ] f o r m a l n e t w o rk l e ar n i n g fr o m s l u m ? QuickInfo Preproposal for my Masterthesis, based on several research questions, as the followings: — What is our future city going to look like? — Can we learn from slum structures? — How can we imporve informal living situations?
Growing slums, exploding cities and the upcoming rise of informal urban districts are global relevant topics — just like the increasing number of potentially destabilizing floods of refugees and conflicting situations all over the world due to political destabilization. For us in Europe this seemed to be far away. But our daily life is influenced by globalization as well as by migration. Or better:
master thesis proposal
The world is changing now. Today there are thousands of people on their way fleeing to a better world, a better place, a new home. The fact, that our daily life is characterized by the city, which is already today accommodating one half of the global population, is not surprising. But that 2050 — according to common forecasts — one out of three persons is going to live informal is shocking. This raises the question of whether we are going to be prepared for the upcoming precarious living conditions and limited space or not.
Here the proposed project intervenes: There are slum-structures that have become well-established. For example the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, whose are offering a fixed social structure for its inhabitants. As problematic as the infrastructural situation is in this minimal housing structures might be, the whole network is still providing a home and social security similar to a big family. What more can you learn from this structures and how can one extract the positive aspects of the built reality? Is it possible to re-use or reinterpret the positive intervoven network of the slum? Starting with this research questions, I want to develop a concept, which provides a catalog of possible reactions on upcoming masses of refugees coming to European cities. From a small shelter cell to the integration of new inhabitants to an urban network. Focusing not just on a built result but more on socio-cultural questions that need to be answered. 01 ∙ the city of the future?

01 ∙ view public space QuickInfo Task: Competition Gate2 ∙ Highrise office and residential building Competition phase FebruaryJuly ‘14 Typology: High-rise Program: Flexible use office and housing Scale: 32.000 m2 Location: Vienna, Austria Team: Winy Maas, Fokke Moerel, Luca Moscelli, Angelika Hinterbrandner [mvrdv] — Focus: Competition Phase 01 design & form development, site plan & surroundings, ground floor plans, diagramatic work.
What form can this tower take in order to express the current needs of the site?
7
02 ∙ site plan
It should be a tower that has learned and progressed from earlier single towers. Can it be programmed in a truly flexible manner so that it can easily adapt to its circumstances? Can it be a tower that can even be polite to its neigbhours by avoiding casting a shadow? A polite tower after an epoch of selfishness?
As the tower is to be used as offices as well as housing demands an asymmetrical floor plan to limit the amount of north facing apartments. The most demanding use will dictate the size and proportion of the units. The towers „office“ capacity would allow the residents to throw a large party.
03 ∙ view döbelhofstraße
03 ∙ model photo
the hour-glass figure An elegant hour-glass figure emerged that responds to the surroundings and open views towards the Gasometers. The design for the plaza around the tower can be seen like a gigantic sundial on which the two hour shadow cast can be followed throughout the day.

A cohesive landscaping plan foresees a wide variety of fruit trees in the courtyard, in both the private and public areas. The landscaping will attempt to blur the lines between the interior and exterior of the block into a widely applied park-like format. Parking for the block is underground to create a car free interior, and the roofs of the buildings will be used for additional outdoor space.
