SECOND CREEK WATERSHED + CORRIDOR
+
Knoxville, TN
The Second Creek corridor spans the distance between the Tennessee River and the Inskip neighborhood of Knox County. The creek travels through three transects, urban center, general urban and suburban; winding between the typical ‘valley-ridge’ system that makes up the east Tennesssee terrain. Second Creek provides multiple opportunities to connect the community to the growing greenway systems of Knoxville.

CONNECTION TO THE SOURCE Host to Knoxville’s historic milling and textile industries, Second Creek is currently surrounded by industrial zones, mixed retail and historic residential neighborhoods. Happy Holler on Central Avenue is a major storm water and community collector. This project looks at storm water filtration and community education through the implementation of bioswale streetscapes.

1 Precipitation runs off of roofs,
sidewalks, parking lots and roads.
2 Typically, storm water washes
directly into storm drains carrying with it pollutants such as oil, fertilizers and pesticides. This water is often untreated and runs directly to creeks and rivers.
3 Storm water is diverted into
bioswales via curb cuts along the streets and sidewalks. 4 The use of native plants and trees in the bioswale landscape help to slow down the water, start the filtration process, and reduces the need for irrigation, fertilizers and pesticides.
7
5 Soil microbes together with tree
and plant roots help to clean the water. 6 Detained water also filters through the soil helping to recharge ground water. 7 Water table.
8 Excessive water is
released by outflows.

BIOSWALE STREET PARK:
The Central Avenue Corridor is centered amongst commercial, industrial and residential zones. To capture the excessive amounts of run off due to impervious surfaces, the bioswale streetscape aims at capturing and holding the first inch of rainfall. The total water holding capacity of the bioswales is 27,156 gallons of water, filtering runoff before it enters second creek.
