Messolongi - Aetoliko ... The secrets of the lagoon!

Located on a peninsula between the homonymous lagoon and in this Klisova estuary of Evinos and Acheloos, Mesologgi holds an important place in the pages of Greek History (culminating certainly heroic exit) and a rich cultural heritage thanks to be the birthplace of Kostis Palamas , Miltiades Malakasis, George Drosini, Spyridon and Charilaos Trikoupis. We began our tour of the city from Heroes’ Park, next to the walls, and we focused on the most charming spots: the main square “Markos Botsaris”, Trikoupi’s and Palama’s old mansions, which has been converted into museums and always lively central pedestrian zone with cafes, taverns and active cultural institution. Next destination was the beautiful lagoon and the road leading to the island of Tourlida. Sitting in one of the sea cafes, we enjoyed one of the most exciting sunsets in Greece, overlooking the picturesque pelades, languidly moored on stilts, and across the lagoon with orange shades.

Driving alongside the salt marshes, we reached to Aetoliko. In the middle of the tranquil lagoon, the densely populated island is connected to the mainland by two stone arched bridges of the 19th century, emitting Venetian beauty. We left Constantinos Lascaris’ road, the main road that crosses Etoliko, and we got lost in the alleys, in order to visit the Church of the Archangels and the famous Vassiliki’s tomb. We concluded our walk with "Vaso Katraki"’s museum, with over 500 projects awarded engraver legacy from the same to the place of origin.
