Greece : New Year’s Customs

1. Peloponnese -

Breaking of pomegranate New Year's morning the family goes to church and the landlord keeps in his pocket a pomegranate. Returning home, he needs to hit the doorbell ( he mustn’t open himsellf to the key) - and so be the first to enter the house, to do good omen, with the pomegranate in hand. Immediately, he breaks the pomegranate behind the door and says: “"with health, happiness and happy New Year !!” Children gather around looking berries, if they are deep red. As strong and beautiful are the berries, both joyful and blessed will be the day that brings together the new year.

Kefallonia“Colognes”


In Kefalonia, and the other islands of the Ionian Islands, the evening of New Year's Eve, the people full of joy for the coming of the new year walk to the streets holding bottles of cologne and sprinkle each other singing: "We came with roses and blossoms to say about you many times."The last year’s wish is: "Good Cut".New Year's morning the band of the municipality passes from all the houses and singing

songs and carols: "Again you heard lords again we say to you, that tomorrow esti need to rejoice and to celebrate circumcision Lord.�
