Greece : New Year’s Customs

1. Peloponnese -

Breaking of pomegranate New Year's morning the family goes to church and the landlord keeps in his pocket a pomegranate. Returning home, he needs to hit the doorbell ( he mustn’t open himsellf to the key) - and so be the first to enter the house, to do good omen, with the pomegranate in hand. Immediately, he breaks the pomegranate behind the door and says: “"with health, happiness and happy New Year !!” Children gather around looking berries, if they are deep red. As strong and beautiful are the berries, both joyful and blessed will be the day that brings together the new year.
