Introduction
Hereby, we are presenting you our transmedia storytelling project. The brand we chose is Avatar the Movie. We chose this brand because we both really like the movie, but we also saw a big opportunity for a transmedia storytelling project. It’s a brand that has a lot of fans and that is still talked about a lot, even though the release of the film is 7 years ago. The next film is expected in 2018, which means that there would be almost 10 years of no new content for the fans of Avatar. That’s a loss, especially because the fans are very involved. We though this would be a great opportunity for a transmedia storytelling project and decided to uplift the brand to a higher concept. In our report, we have chosen to depart from the original lay-out, where it’s devided in the three chapters Treatment, Business & Design. We have sort of followed these guidelines, but we have described the parts Platforms & Channels, Terms & Conditions, and Production Team in the chapter of Story Per Medium. For us, it was much clearer to do it this way. We hope you enjoy reading our report as much as we enjoyed making it.

Treatment
Research and backstory
Start of the brand Avatar is an American science fiction film directed by James Cameron from 2009. The development of Avatar already began in 1994, when Cameron wrote an 80-page treatment for the film. Filming was supposed to take place after his other movie, Titanic, had finished and the release of the film was planned in 1999, but the necessary technology was not yet available to achieve his vision of the film. He started working on the language of the Na’vi (the residents of Pandora) in 2005 and Cameron began developing the screenplay and fictional universe in early 2006. New motion capture filming techniques were used for this film and it was released for traditional viewing, 3D viewing and for ‘4D’ experiences in select South Korean theatres (Wikipedia, 2016). Avatar premiered in London on December 10, 2009. Internationally, the film was released on December 16 and in the United States and Canada on December 18. Critical reviews were very positive and highly praised its groundbreaking visual effects. During its theatrical run, the film became the highest-grossing film of all time. Avatar has won three Academy Awards, for Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography and Best Visual Effects. Cameron has signed with 20th Century Fox to produce three sequels and on April 14, 2016 Cameron confirmed that there are now plans for four sequels. Avatar 2 is scheduled for release in December 2018 (Wikipedia, 2016). Products and services The most important product Avatar has is the movie that has appeared in 2009 (Wikipedia, 2016). Besides the movie there are two websites: avatarmovie.com (Avatar movie, 2016) and pandorapedia.com. On this websites fans can read about the world of Avatar, Pandora. Everything they want to know about the Na’Vi, flora, fauna, human operations, but also the dictionary is on Pandorapedia (Pandorapedia, 2016). Of course social media cannot be missed. Avatar is using Facebook (Facebook, 2016) and Twitter (Twitter, 2016) a lot. They post several times a week. On December 7th the exhibition ‘’Avatar: discover Pandora’’ starts in Taiwan. It is an interactive exhibition inspired by Avatar and all the creatures, cultures and environments (Avatar Discover Pandora, 2016). Disney is also building ‘’Pandora – the world of Avatar’’ in Disney’s Animal Kingdom. This part of the theme park will open in 2017 (Smith, 2016). Opportunity We have found that there is still a big interest in Avatar. Their Facebook posts still reach up to 4,5k likes and there are fandom forums on the internet where fans still talk about this film today, even when the film is already 7 years old. Fans of Avatar aren’t just interested in the film, they are interested in the world of Avatar (Pandora) (Facebook, 2016). We have also found that making a new film of Avatar takes a lot of time. Avatar 2 was 4
originally set to release in 2016, but it has been shifted to December 2018 (Eisenberg, 2015). It is possible that fans will lose their interest in Avatar while waiting for a new film release. Avatar doesn’t have many other products than the film: only their website, social media channels and one exhibition in Taiwan. So to keep the interest of the fans at a high, we think it’s good to release other Avatar-related media, that don’t have to take that much time as a film. The Story Because we have chosen a movie as a brand instead of a company, there is already a very complete story written. By 2154, the Earth’s natural sources have been depleted by humans, which leads to a severe energy crisis. On Pandora, a densely forested habitable moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system, a valuable mineral, unobtanium, has been found. Pandora is inhibited by the Na’vi: 3m tall, blue-skinned, sapient humanoids, who live in harmony with nature and worship a mother goddess, Eywa (Wikipedia, 2016). To explore the biosphere of Pandora, scientists have created Na’vi-human hybrids, called Avatars. These are genetically matched with humans. Jake Sully, a former marine who is in a wheelchair, replaces his deceased identical twin brother to operate one. Because Jake Sully isn’t a scientist but a former marine, his mission is to protect the avatars of scientists Dr. Grace Augustine and Dr. Norm Spellman while they are collecting biological data on Pandora. Jake’s Avatar is attacked and he is being rescued by Neytiri, a female Na’vi. Neytiri takes Jake to her clan and her mother instructs Neytiri to initiate Jake in their society (Wikipedia, 2016). Meanwhile, Jake is having contact with Colonel Miles Quaritch, head of RDA’s private security force. Colonel Miles Quaritch promises Jake that the company will restore his legs if he gathers information about the Na’vi and their gathering place: a giant three called Hometree. This tree is on grounds that stands above the richest deposit of unobtanium. When Grace finds out about this, she transfers herself, Jake and Norm to an outpost. The following months, Jake grows to sympathize with the natives and learns how to live like a Na’vi. When Jake is initiated into the tribe, he and Neytiri choose each other as mates. Soon afterwards, Jake attempts to disable a bulldozer that threatens to destroy a sacred Na’vi site and he reveals his change of allegiance. When colonel Miles Quaritch finds a video recording of Jake’s attack on the bulldozer and another one in which Jake admits that the Na’vi will never abandon Hometree, he shows the video’s to administrator Parker Selfridge, who then orders to destroy Hometree (Wikipedia, 2016). Despite the argument of Grace that destroying Hometree could bring damage to the biological neural network of Pandora, Selfridge gives Jake and Grace one hour to convince the Na’vi to evacuate before commencing the attack. As Jake is trying to warn the Na’vi’s for the attack, he confesses that he is a spy and the Na’vi take him and Grace captive. As Colonel Miles Quaritch this sees, he and his men destroy Hometree, kill Neytiri’s father and many others. Neytiri’s mother frees Jake and Grace, but they are being detached from their avatar and imprisoned by Colonel Miles Quaritch’s forces. Pilot Trudy Chacon then carries them to Grace’s outpost, but during this escape, Miles Quaritch fires at them and hits Grace

(Wikipedia, 2016). To regain the trust of the Na’vi’s, Jakes comes up with a plan to gain respect. He connects his mind to that of Toruk, a dragon-like predator feared and honored by the Navi. Only one other Na’vi has ever done that before and he was respected by the whole clan. Jake finds the Na’vi’s at the Tree of Sould and pleads with Neytiri’s mother to heal Grace. They attempt to transfer Grace from her human body into her avatar, but she dies before the process is completed (Wikipedia, 2016). Jake then speaks to unite the clan and tells them to gather all of the clans to battle against the RDA. Quaritch notices this and organizes a pre-emptive strike against the Tree of Sould, believing that destructing this will demoralize the Na’vi’s (Wikipedia, 2016). During the battle, The Na’vi suffer heavy casualties but are rescued when Pandoran wildlife unexpectedly join the attack and overwhelm the humans. Jake destroys a bomber before it reaches the Tree of Souls, but Quaritch manages to escape from his own damaged aircraft. He’s wearing an AMP suit and breaks open the avatar link unit containing Jake’s human body, which makes it unable for Jake’s human body to breathe in the Pandora’s poisonous atmosphere. Neytiri kills Quaritch and saves Jake from suffocation (Wikipedia, 2016). All humans, except for Jake, Norm, Max (another scientist), and a select few others, are expelled from Pandora and sent back to Earth. After this, Jake is transferred permanently into his avatar with the aid of the Tree of Souls (Wikipedia, 2016).
Tagline
What if you found a world with other creatures. The reason for this tagline is, Avatar is about a world we do not know. It is a whole other world without humans, but with a lot of other creatures. That is why the tagline fits the story/movie.
Synopsis
Pandora Kifkey (Pandora World) Pandora World is not just a story, but it’s an entire imaginary world brought to life through different media. It is situated in Pandora, a densely forested habitable moon orbiting the gas giant Polyphemus in the Alpha Centauri star system. Because our transmedia story idea is not just a storyline but an entire world, we will briefly describe the imaginary world Pandora. Each of our mediums will have a story line that fits in this world. Pandora is inhibited by the Na’vi: 3m tall, blue-skinned, sapient humanoids, who live in harmony with nature. Therefore the nature and the Na’vi are the two elements that are very important in this world (Pandorapedia, 2016).
6
Nature The nature of Pandora consists of five different parts: aquatic, forest, grasslands, mountains and wetlands. Each of these come with their own fauna and flora [ CITATION Pan165 \l 1043 ].
Most important fauna: Direhorse: This animal has been domesticated as a riding animal by the Na’vi. It’s a horse-like creature with six legs. A Na’vi can bond with a direhorse so their minds are connected whilst riding (Pandorapedia, 2016).
Mountain Banshee: is also domesticated as a riding animal by the Na’vi. Different than the
7
direhorse, a Banshee will only bond with one Na’vi in its lifetime and when the Na’vi is ‘ready’, the Banshee will choose the Na’vi. When connected, a Na’vi can guide a Banshee with their minds (Pandorapedia, 2016).
Great Leonopteryx: The Na’vi call this animal Toruk (Last Shadow), because barely anyone survives seeing this animal. The fierce beauty and nobility of this animal has a central place in the culture of the Na’vi. When a Na’vi bonds with a leonopteryx, they gain a lot of respect from the other Na’vi’s (Pandorapedia, 2016).
Na’vi’s The
Na’vi are humanoid two-footed and are structural like humans. The Na’vi’s have a blue and purple shades skin color, which makes them different from humans. They all have a long tail which is used for balance and to help with changing directions (Pandorapedia, 2016).
8
The Na’vi’s are arranging their own food from the fauna and flora. Their food is very variable and exist of meat, seeds, fruits, vegetables and spices (Pandorapedia, 2016). There are hundreds of different clans on Pandora. A lot of them lives in old trees which are big enough to house hundred of Na’vi’s (Pandorapedia, 2016).

Story per medium
Book Storyline Niawtu is a sixteen-year old girl who lives with a giant feeling of guilt. When she was eight, she accidentally set Dr. Grace Augustine’s school on fire. Because of this, she’s afraid she won’t be able to become part of the clan when she’s 18 and feels like she has to prove herself towards the clan. Her best friend, Ralu, is one of the few people that knows that Niawtu is the one that set the school on fire and tries to help her find something that will prove to the clan that she is brave enough to become a part of it. Ralu finds that if she kills the Toruk, the most dangerous animal on Pandora, she will have done something that makes up to her action of setting the school on fire. Niawtu thinks that this challenge is ridiculous and tells Ralu that she can’t do it, but Ralu knows how much Niawtu wants to be accepted into the clan. He tries to convince her that it’s the only way she can be accepted into the clan. Niawtu’s hopes to become part of the clan are bigger than her fear to be killed by the Toruk, so she accepts the challenge. Niawtu decides to sneak away from her home in the middle of the night so she won’t get caught by anyone. Unfortunately, there is someone who catches Niawtu in the forest in the middle of the night and he asks her what she’s up to. Niawtu decides to tell him about her plan to kill the Toruk to be accepted into the clan. The guy then introduces himself as Mawey and tells her he had just been accepted into a clan and that he could help her teaching everything she needs to kill the Toruk. In Mawey’s clan, the Toruk is highly feared by everyone and he thinks he will also gain respect from his clan if he helps Niawtu kill the Toruk. Mawey’s mother, Sanu, overheard the conversation Niawtu and Mawey were holding and tells them not to kill the Toruk. Even though the Toruk is feared by the Na’vi’s, it’s also
14
treasured in their culture and killing the Toruk will outbalance the nature, she believes. Sanu refuses to let Niawtu and Mawey go, so Niawtu goes back home. A little while later, Mawey wakes Niawtu up and tells her to come with him to kill the Toruk. Even though his mother told him not to kill the Toruk, Mawey really wants to gain respect from his clan and wants to help Niawtu, so he decided not to listen to his mother. They decide to go deeper into the forest, so Mawey can teach Niawtu some skills to kill the Toruk. He teaches her some fighting skills, but they also have to reach the mountains, where the Toruk lives and it’s a tough way to get there. She has to learn how to ride a direhorse to come closer to the mountains, but therefore she first has to bond with a direhorse. She will also have to learn how to fly on a banshee. Bonding with a banshee is very hard and dangerous. For this, Niawtu and Mawey have to go to the place where the banshee’s live. To bond with a banshee, the banshee has to choose the Na’vi. Mawey tells Niawtu that she will feel when a banshee chooses her and that he will try to attack her. One of the banshee’s indeed attacks her and she thinks that he has chosen her, but instead he saw her as a victim because she was feeling so insecure and Niawtu is unable to connect to the banshee. He almost kills her and tries to throw her off the cliff. When Niawtu is hanging off the cliff and is almost facing death, another banshee decides to choose her fights the banshee that attacked her and saves her. Niawtu then bonds with this banshee and Mawey teaches her how to control it. Because Niawtu almost died when fighting with the banshee, she realises that fighting the Toruk will be impossible. Niawtu goes back home, feeling a little dissappointed in herself, but she simply can’t fight the Toruk. While walking back home, the Toruk has seen Niawtu because she’s on his grounds and tries to attack her. Mawey, who was still very close to her, already saw the Toruk, warns her and helps her to escape right in time. She’s so in shock, that Mawey takes her home to help her calm down. At home, his mother Sanu asked what happened and Niawtu tells her the story and that she was right that she shouldn’t have tried to fight the Toruk. When she goes back to her own home, she realises she won’t be able to join the clan ever and feels very sad. When she comes home, a family member asks why she’s so sad, so she Niawtu opens up to her and tells her that she was afraid she won’t be able to become part of the clan because she had set the school on fire as a kid. She then tells about her plan to become brave enough to be let into the clan. The family member then tells her that everything was all up in her head and that no one thought that she wasn’t brave. She also tells her that it’s even braver of her to decide not to kill the Toruk and to just accept faith and that she will still be accepted into the clan. Platforms and channels This part of the transmedia story is a book. A book is a way where it’s user (the reader) can be completely immersed into the story world without being active. Because a reader gets immersed, it will most likely feel attracted to find out more about the story and would want to move on to other channels. Terms and conditions Nothing, just the book. Platforms and channels The (online) game is a game for every console, for example playstation of xbox, which uses virtual reality. By this players become part of the game and fancies themselves in the world of Avatar. Via this game they can connect with other players and play together to achieve their goals. The game console can take a picture from the players, so their face is on an avatar. Terms and conditions Game console. Optional: internet access, VR glasses, camera. Experience Park Storyline The experience parc will learn visitors more about Pandora World. The visitors can literally walk around in the Pandora World, see its nature, smell the air etc. They will even have to walk around with ‘air masks’ because of the toxic air. Platforms and channels This will be a physical park. Therefore, it does take a lot of effort to visit the park because you have to physically go there. Probably only people that are already a fan of Pandora World will visit the park, but it adds so much more to the experience because you can see, feel, smell, taste and hear Pandora. Obviously, our goal is to make the park so interesting that it’s even fun for visitors that are not a fan of Pandora World (yet). Who do we need Website developer Website Storyline This website is comparable to that of NASA, where they publish a lot of information about the planet Pandora. There is already a website called Pandorapedia that has a lot of information about the planet Pandora. The idea of this website is to make that already existing website a lot bigger and seem as if it would be a real thing, such as the NASA website. Now that website just contains a lot of information about the planet, but it’d be a bit of a bigger experience if they made the website seem as if it’s a real thing, to make vaguer barriers between the movie and the real world. Platforms and channel This will be a website. What is unique about this medium is that it makes it seem like there is a connection between the real world and Pandora World. It’s a website you can visit from your home and it’s made as if there are actual scientists doing research to planet Pandora. Script
EXT. FOREST – NIGHT Niawtu is walking home disappointed. Now she cannot prove how brave she is to be accepted by the clan. Because of the time, she is trying to sleep. Suddenly she hears rustling outside. It is Mawey. MAWEY (Whispering) Come on Niawtu, we are going to the mountains to kill the Toruk. Be quiet, so no one heares you sneaking away. NIAWTU (Yawning) But your mom told us not to, it is not good for the Balance of the nature MAWEY If you want to prove the clan how brave you are, you have to go. Niawtu and Mawey decide to go to the forest. They have to go real deep, so no one can see or hear them, while they are practicing skills. Mawey knows some skills he learned from the clan. He wants to learn this skills to Niawtu, so she can defeat the dangerous Toruk. NIAWTU Are we deep enough in the forest? I do not want to encounter your mom again Mawey. MAWEY Yes Niawtu, we are deep enough. My mother won’t find us. Now whe have to learn you have to fight, otherwise you will never get to the Toruk. NIAWTU Do I really need to know how to fight? I can use a sword or a bow or something like that. MAWEY (sighs) This is necessary, because we will also get across other enemies and creatures which you have to defeat. You won’t be fast enough all the times to get your weapon. Mawey explained Niawtu how she has to fight. He teaches her how to use her hands and how to protect herself when someone is attacking her. All of a sudden Niawtu and Mawey hear something coming their way really fast. NIAWTU Come hid, quickly Mawey! They quickly hide behind a three and wait till they see the creatures. MAWEY Niawtu, this is the perfect opportunity, we can ride on the direhorses to the place where the banshees are. NIAWTU (a little shocked) But I do not know how to ride a direhorse! MAWEY I will teach you how to. First we have to bond with a direhorse.
20
Niawtu and Mawey are getting a little closer to the direhorses. Mawey shows how to bond with a direhorse. It is all about trust and respect for each other. After finding the right direhorse, Mawey has bond to the creature. MAWEY Now it is your turn Niawtu. You have to do exactly the same as I did. You have to find a direhorse which is coming a little to you. Niawtu walks carefully through the direhorses, when suddenly one is coming a little closer to her. Niawtu walks a little closer to the direhorse and touches him. She climbs on the direhorse and they have bonded. Now she can ride deeper and deeper into the forest. MAWEY Wait Niawtu, not so fast! You do not know what is in the forest so deep. Wait for me! Too late, Niawtu is screaming. Something in the forest grabbed the direhorse and Niawtu felt to the ground. The unknown creature is ready for Niawty and gets closer to her. It is so close, she can smell the horrible smell of the beast.

Target Audience
Due to extreme high costs of Avatar, the film was was targeted as “8 to 80”, for everyone. - Older male audience - Families with young children - Technology enthusiasts - Sci-Fi buffs - Gamers - Teenagers (12C Film Industry Blog, 2010) For our transmedia storytelling project, we’d like to disconnect the brand Avatar from the film Avatar. We’d like to call this, ‘The World of Avatar’. This is going to give us a different target audience. A film can easily be targeted on “8 to 80”, but we think that ‘The World of Avatar’ has a smaller target group. There is a very large group that would like to watch the film, and rather not dive deeper into ‘The World of Avatar’. For ‘The World of Avatar’ the target audience would be limited to: - Technology enthusiasts
23
- Sci-Fi buffs - Gamers
User need
The target audience will use the transmedia storytelling to get amused. They want to be more involved in the Pandora World and understand how the nature and creatures works to protect the Pandora World from enemies. They can achieve this goal by using all the different media. It is their way to escape from the reality and to imagine they live in another world.
Budgeting
We’re now going to describe what exactly is needed to fulfill each medium. Book: - author - publisher - visual designer - publishing of the books - network of book shops to sell the books in - promotion of the book: - online at already existing facebook page of the movie - through already existing website - book signings with author - good places on shelves in book shops (Online) Game: - game developer - visual designer - publisher - publishing of the games - promotion of the game:
- online at already existing facebook page of the movie - through already existing website - at gaming events - let famous game youtubers play the game
Experience park: - physical building of the park (very high cost) - people working in the park - daily cleaning of the park - maintenance of the park - promotion of the park: - online at already existing facebook page of the movie - through already existing website - cool video of the park on already existing website Online platform: - website developer - server - domain
24
- promotion of online platform: - online at already existing facebook page of the movie - through already existing website Website - website developer - server - domain - promotion of website:
- online at already existing facebook page of the movie - through already existing website
We decided to not spend much money on promotion for the online platform and the website, because there’s also no money income from these platforms.
Business Model
Our transmedia story is made into a self-sufficient brand. Its function is not just to add more experience to the already existing brand, but we have lifted the already existing brand (Avatar Movie) up to a transmedia story brand. Down here you can read which medium earns money in what way. Book: book sales Game: game sales Experience park: ticket sales, merchandise sales inside the park Online platform: no money flow Website: no money flow Both the online platform and website don’t have any money flow, but will make the users more involved in Pandora World. The users will be more likely to consume one of the other media.
25
Design
User journey
Our transmedia story can be started with any medium and any medium can be used afterwards. There is no specific journey the user has to follow. The media amplify each other and can all be used seperately as well.
26
Timeline
Each of the events don’t really have a duration of time, because once they are released, they will exist forever. Only the Experience Park is something that could stop at one point when it’s not profitable anymore. When it’s highly profitable, there might even be an option of opening another experience park somewhere else around the world.
Key Events
The releases of each of the media are the key events of our project. Release of the book: this has to be very soon, because the longer we wait, the bigger the chance that the buzz around Avatar and Pandora will take off and now we can still use the already existing buzz. This will be the start of our transmedia story, because then the fans of the movie Avatar will realise that there are also other stories that could exist in Pandora World. Release of website: The release of the website doesn’t really have a fixed date, but it’d be cool if it’d be not that long after the release of the book, because the website will contain a lot of information about Pandora. Release of the online platform: The release of the online platform will be after the release of the website, but really short after it. With the information found on the website, users of the online platform can easily create their own stories and have proper discussions. Release of game: The release of the game doesn’t really have a fixed date. I think we will have to feel when the audience needs something new, so we can release the game. Release of the experience park: The release of the experience park could be at any moment, but it takes a lot of time to build the park, so it will just be after the building of the park has finished.
27
Branding
Our transmedia production fits very well with the brand Avatar Movie, because it is a higher concept to the already existing movie. We use the exact same world as used in the movie, for our concept, which is a great fit.

Peer to peer Angelique It was a pleasure to work together with Eline. On the beginning we agreed on finishing the project in time, so we didn’t need to worry about the deadline. It was hard to begin with the paper, because the first lesson was cancelled. Although this, the process went very smooth. Working with Eline is really nice, because she is really motivated and a hard working student. Besides the lesson and on school we met at home to work on the paper. Most of the time we worked together on the project and discussed everything. Just to make sure we both agreed on everything. We devided a few things, so we could work a little faster and further. I fully trust Eline with a project, because the will give the best she has and her work is always from high quality. If I could do this project again, I would definitely work with Eline again. I would give Eline a 9/10.
Peer to peer Eline
Angelique and I have had a very good collaboration. We both agreed on finishing this assignment on time and started it early, even though that was quite hard because some of the classes were cancelled. We have worked on the project in class and met up at Angelique’s house a few times to work on it. Then we decided what parts were very important to do together, and what parts we could divide and work on at home. Because of this, each of us did an equal amount of work. I really enjoyed working together with Angelique. She’s a hard worker and expects the same quality for the report as I do, which is nice. I can fully trust Angelique on writing a chapter for the report and knowing it has the quality that I expect. There has never been a point in the process where I was uncertain about us working together. If I had to give Angelique a grade for working on this project, I’d give her a 9/10.
