TRAVIS SCOTT Ask Travis Scott why he coaches and his answer is as simple as his coaching methods. “I do it because I love it.” Scott stresses the importance of fundamentals, and it has paid dividends over the last 10 seasons. Under his guidance, Angelo State has averaged 46 wins per season, hoisted four NCAA Division II South Central Region trophies and made four trips to the NCAA D-II National
to ASU in 2003. Scott’s record at SOSU was 101-50-2 and earned LSC North Coach of the Year in 2002. Scott’s coaching legacy took roots when he was the head baseball and softball coach at Lone Grove High School in Lone Grove, Okla. His softball teams posted a cumulative record of 165-62, including four 30-plus-win seasons, five district championships, four regional titles and two runner-up finishes in the
Championships, bringing home the national title in 2004. Scott guided ASU to five LSC Conference Championships and six LSC South Division titles in the last nine years. During his reign, Scott has coached 24 ASU All-Americans, 43 NFCA All-Region players and 42 All-Lone Star Conference honorees. In addition, 14 Rambelles have been named Academic All-LSC team under Scott. As a four-time LSC Coach of the Year, Scott boasts a 455-146 record at ASU for a .757 winning percentage. Including his three seasons at Southeastern Oklahoma prior to his arrival in San Angelo, Scott has a career coaching record of 556-196-2 and a .737 winning percentage. He currently ranks 8th in NCAA D-II in winning percentage among active coaches. A native of Ardmore, Okla., Scott brought a winning tradition with him when he arrived at ASU. In his three previous seasons as head coach at Southeastern Oklahoma – his alma mater – Scott claimed three LSC North Division titles and guided the Lady Savages to the South Central Regional Tournament in 2003. His teams also claimed a LSC championship in 2001 and finished as runners-up
Class 3A OSSAA State Tournament. Seven of his players garnered allstate recognition and 13 received college athletic scholarships. As a high school baseball coach from 1993-2000, Scott posted a 131-74 record and numerous district championships and regional titles. His 1997 and 1998 teams were

Class 4A state semi-finalists. A skilled baseball player himself, Scott competed at SOSU from 1990-92 and was the starting third baseman on the 1990 team that finished fourth at the NAIA College World Series, where he was named to the all-tournament team and was a Gold Glove recipient. Scott holds a bachelor’s degree in health, physical education and dance and a master’s in secondary education-health/physical education from Southeastern Oklahoma. He is married to associate head coach Katie Scott and has three children, step-daughter Kenna Dawn Self and sons Mickey Ryan Scott and Gehrig Brooks Scott.

KATIE SCOTT
Beginning her fifth season at Angelo State and first as associate head coach, Katie Scott works primarily with pitchers and outfielders. Katie was honored along with head coach Travis Scott and former assistant coach Claudia Lopez as part of the NCAA Division II Coaching Staff of the Year in 2009 after leading the Rambelles to their third NCAA D-II South Central Regional title. She joined the Rambelles coaching staff prior to the 2008
season after a standout collegiate playing career at Florida Institute of Technology. In four seasons at Florida Tech, the former Katie Naumoff posted a .351 career batting average and was a threetime All-Sunshine State Conference pick for the Panthers, including first team honors as a junior. That season, she led the Panthers with a .409 batting average and was named to the All-South Region first team by the NFCA. An excellent student at Florida Tech, Katie was selected to the

SSC Commissioner’s Honor Roll in her final three seasons. At the end of her senior season, she was named to the SSC Silver Anniversary Softball Team, made up of 31 student athletes over the Conference’s first 25 years of competition in the sport of softball. A native of Poland, Ohio, Katie is married to head softball coach Travis Scott. She earned her bachelor’s degree in psychology from Florida Tech in 2007 and her master’s degree from ASU in 2009.

athletic facilities MAYER FIELD The Angelo State Rambelles compete at Mayer Field at the asu Softball Complex, located on the corner of Johnson and Victory. Hellas Construction completed a $600,000 artificial turf project in November of 2013. The field is 190 feet to left and right field and 220 to deep center. The field features two dugout facilities that include team bathrooms and washrooms, team benches, bag and bat storage areas and an area for miscellaneous equipment. The field also includes a pressbox , a concession stand and a mini-athletic training facility with an area for pre-game preparation and injury treatment at the field. A major renovation of the facility seating and fan amenities was completed in 2006. Fans are kept up to date with a complete sound and public address system and a deluxe inning-by-inning scoreboard. The field also has batting cages and warm-up bullpens for players to prepare for games, as well as a padded and wind-screened fence to provide an ideal playing facility. The complex hosted the 2007, 2008, 2009 and 2012
ncaa Division II South Central Regional Tournaments. The Rambelles also boast one of the finest locker room facilities in ncaa Division II softball in the state-of-the-art Junell Center/Stephens Arena. The facility features deluxe lockers, a team meeting room and a study lounge. The oak-trimmed lockers have dressing lights, electrical outlets and a seating area for
each player. The lounge area has several bulletin boards used by the team for motivational posters, team information and other decorative items. When the Rambelles aren’t relaxing, they can watch game film in the meeting room, and there are Internet hookups in the lounge so they can work on homework or research while waiting for practice. In addition, the area houses several of the awards and trophies
the team and individuals have won throughout the brief history of the Rambelles program.

Angelo State softball became one of the fastest programs to earn a national title in ncaa competition as the Rambelles claimed the national crown in 2004, just three years after the team’s reinstatement. Below is a game-by-game recap of asu’s run for the 2004 ncaa Division II National Championship. RAMBELLES WIN OPENER, 2-1
A sacrifice fly by senior outfielder Stacy Broman drove in the winning run as the Rambelles downed Shippensburg, 2-1, in the opening round. Senior pitcher Claudia Lopez tossed a four-hit complete game striking out 12 Lady Raiders as asu won its first-ever ncaa D-II World Series game. The contest was a scoreless battle until the top of the sixth inning, when Shippensburg capitalized on a base hit and a Rambelles error to take a 1-0 lead. The Rambelles rebounded in the bottom of the inning as the top of the batting order responded to the call. Senior Alexis Wing reached on a single to shallow left field, stole second and scored a single by senior Michelle Hofmann. Hofmann advanced to third base after an outfield error by the Lady Raiders, and scored the go-ahead run later in the frame on Broman’s deep fly out. Lopez then retired the Shippensburg side in order in the seventh, collecting one strike out and a pair of ground outs to ice the victory. ASU DEFEATS FLORIDA SOUTHERN, 2-1
The Rambelles held on to a late lead while dealing with Mother Nature in their 2-1 win over Florida Southern in second-round action. asu struck first on a bases-loaded ground out by Diana Faulkner that brought in Arin Spence. That lead was extended to 2-0 in the following frame as pinch runner Sarah Woodman scored from second base on an infield single by Spence. The Moccasins picked up their
only run of the game as Katie Brandon scored on an rbi single by Sarah Kohlbrenner in the bottom of the sixth inning. A 20-minute rain delay added drama to the looming seventh inning. When action resumed, the Rambelles put the first two runners on base, but were unable to plate an insurance run. Florida Southern had some late life as Stacy Gross reached on a one-out walk, but Spence retired the next two batters on a ground out and a pop up. Spence allowed just six hits to the Mocs while striking out four to pick up the victory.

The comeback kids did it again as the Rambelles rebounded from a two-run deficit to defeat Shippensburg, 4-2, in a semifinal match up. The Rambelles trailed early as the Lady Raiders capitalized on a pair of asu fielding errors in the bottom of the first to take a 2-0 lead. Shippensburg ace and first team All-American Kelly Tiesi limited asu’s scoring opportunities over the next four innings as the Rambelles could only muster one base runner. Arin Spence, however, answered the challenge as the Lady Raiders did not get a runner past second base during that same stretch. The Rambelles opened the sixth inning with the top of the order, and senior Alexis Wing sparked the asu rally with a lead-off single up the middle. Senior center fielder Michelle Hofmann then knotted the game, 2-2, with a two-run blast to right field. One out later, senior left fielder Stacy Broman pushed the Rambelles into the lead with a solo home run to left. The Rambelles then escaped the sixth with the Lady Raiders stranding two aboard. With one out in the inning, Broman made a game-saving diving catch on a liner by Lady Raider Jamie Dacey. The top of the seventh brought more drama for the Rambelles as senior designated player Cat Moreno stepped into the box with a 1-0 count and unleashed a 200-foot

Senior shortstop Diana Faulkner saved the day for asu, hitting a towering three-run homer to left field that put the Rambelles up for good in the top of the seventh as they defeated St. Cloud State, 4-2. The Rambelles took an early lead on a solo home run by senior center fielder Michelle Hofmann. Their hopes of a big first inning, however, were dashed with a ground out and pop out after three hits in the frame. St. Cloud State rebounded quickly as the Huskies’ leadoff hitter, Abby Velta, reached base on an infield single to left and advanced to second on an overthrow. She then stole third base and eventually scored on another asu throwing error. In the fourth inning, St. Cloud took a 2-1 lead on an rbi single by Megan Fuches. The Rambelles loaded the bases in the fifth inning in an attempt to respond, but a pair of ground outs thwarted the rally. An inning-ending double play in the sixth held asu at bay for another frame, and then the Rambelles defense turned in a spectacular 1-6-3 double play in the bottom of the sixth to remain within one run. In the top of the seventh, the drama ensued as senior right fielder Andrea Payan led off with a single

home run blast to deep left-center to add to the Rambelles’ advantage. The Lady Raiders earned a base runner on a walk in their half of the inning, but senior pitcher Claudia Lopez took over the circle and fanned two of the final three Shippensburg batters to preserve the win and earn the save. After dropping a 7-0 decision to Florida Southern, the Rambelles had a second chance at a national championship and took advantage with a 7-3 victory to claim the crown in the “if” game. asu’s offense surged early, scoring efficiently in the top of the first. Senior Alexis Wing reached on a walk, stole second and scored on an fsc error. The Mocs replied with a run in the bottom of the first as leadoff hitter Krista Bradley reached on an error and later scored on a single. But, the Mocs stranded two runners, and the game was tied at the end of the first, 1-1. The Rambelles started the second inning in style as on the first pitch Cat Moreno cranked a solo home run to deep center that bounced off the television truck. After a pair of singles by senior Andrea Payan and Wing, Hofmann—who was named tournament mvp—stretched the Rambelles lead to 5-1 with a three-run blast, her fourth home run during the World Series. asu opened up the fourth inning with a double by senior Jaime McGalliard. Three batters later, Wing knocked in McGalliard with a ground out giving the Rambelles a 6-1 cushion. Hofmann then drove in freshman Arin Spence with a single up the middle to complete asu’s scoring. Florida Southern scored a run in the seventh inning, but senior pitcher Claudia Lopez closed out the game to bring the national championship to San Angelo.

DR. BRIAN MAY
Dr. Brian J. May was appointed president of Angelo State University, a member of the Texas Tech University System, on Nov. 5, 2012. He is the fifth president of ASU and the 10th president of the institution since it began as San Angelo Junior College in 1928. He is also the first ASU graduate to become president of Angelo State. Prior to his appointment as president, May served as ASU’s provost and vice president for academic affairs, dean of the College of Graduate Studies and a professor of animal science in the Agriculture Department. Previously, he served as executive director of the Mohair Council of America based in San Angelo and New York City. An 18-year ASU faculty member, May has also served as director of external relations for the university since 2007. In those dual roles, he secured nearly $10 million in federal and state funding for university programs, more than $100,000 in research grants and more than $500,000 in scholarships for students in the Agriculture Department. Under his leadership as dean of the College of Graduate Studies between 2009 and 2012,
The goal of the Athletic Study Center is to act as the primary academic support contact for studentathletes. The center holds the office of the Athletic Academic Coordinator (acc) for easy visibility and reach. The center houses laptop computers, printers, and individual and collaborative work stations.

May received bachelor’s and master’s degrees in animal science from ASU, and his doctorate in ruminant nutrition from Texas A&M University. He is the author or co-author of 37 refereed journal articles and abstracts. A recognized member of the San Angelo community, May has served on numerous local organization boards, including the San Angelo Livestock Show and Rodeo Association, San Angelo Chamber of Commerce, Hospice of San Angelo, West Texas Rehabilitation Center and West Texas Boys Ranch. In 2008, he was named Citizen of the Year by the San Angelo Chamber of Commerce. He and his wife, Patti, have two daughters, Morgan May Christo, wife of Lenny Christo, and Mackenzie May Holik, wife of Brian Holik.

ADVISING
All academic advising is provided through the individual colleges and academic departments. ACADEMIC PROGRESS
During each semester, the acc surveys the professors of each student-athlete three times. In each grade check, professors are asked to provide academic progress information such as attendance, current grade, at-risk or not, and any additional comments.
MENTORSHIP
The acc provides weekly sessions with mentors for student-athletes identified as “at-risk” based on acc and coach recommendations. During the sessions, grade updates and upcoming assignments are discussed. Assignments are reviewed and study plans are implemented if necessary. TUTORING
Free tutoring is available for student-athletes in Angelo State University’s Tutor Center. In addition to having tutors available for nearly every general education class as well as many upper-level classes, specialized tutoring units include the Math lab, Writing Center, Modern Language tutoring, Accounting lab and Supplemental Instruction (si). The si program offers extracurricular peer tutoring groups for traditionally tough classes. Study sessions are led by students who have completed and earned high grades in the courses. si sessions are conducted multiple times throughout the week.

The Angelo State Athletic Foundation is a non-profit 501-c3 organization whose sole mission is to provide support to Angelo State Athletics. The Athletic Foundation also provides funding in support of recruiting the next generation of Rams and ’Belles, life skills
programming for studentathletes, academic support for student-athletes, and other initiatives important to the welfare of student-athletes and the success of athletic teams.

In 2004, senior outfielder Michelle Hofmann became asu’s first softball cosida Academic All-American with her third-team selection. The next season, senior shortstop Stephanie Fofi doubled asu’s Academic AllAmericans with a second-team selection. The latest player to garner academic All-American honors was Alix Dean, who is a two-time recipient. She garnered second-team honors in 2010 as a junior before claiming first-team recognition in 2011. Hofmann was a first team All-Lone Star Conference South Division outfield selection in 2004, and named to the All-South Central Region first team from the nfca. In addition, she was a first team Academic All-lsc South pick and Academic All-District VI selection with a 3.83 grade point average in kinesiology. Hofmann was named the ncaa Tournament mvp after batting .500 for the tournament (8-of-16) with three home runs, a double and seven runs batted in. She scored five runs in the tournament, and belted a three-run

home run in the championship game against Florida Southern. Fofi was a first team All-lsc South selection at shortstop in 2005 when she batted .311 with 11 doubles for the Rambelles. During her career, Fofi was a two-time winner of the asu Athletic Academic Excellence Award, awarded to the upperclassman with the highest gpa among all sports, and also won the 2005 Holland’s Award for softball. She was tabbed as the lsc South’s Softball Academic Player of the Year in 2005 and Academic All-District VI with a 3.87 grade point average in biology. Dean finished her Rambelle softball career with a .366 batting average and 183 rbis, while being a member of the second-winningest class in program history (193-51). The two-time All-American is asu’s career doubles leader with 65, and set the single-season record of 22 her junior year. Dean, the three-time lsc Academic Player of the Year, finished her academic career with a 3.97 gpa and majored in psychology.

community service The Angelo State softball team regularly gives back to San Angelo and the Concho Valley through various community service programs. In the past year alone, the Rambelles took time out of their hectic schedules to speak to local elementary schools, volunteer at the Concho Valley Regional Food Bank and serve food at McAllister’s to benefit the Children’s Miracle Network. The Rambelles raised money for Operation Gratitude
and the money raised was able to cover the cost of 300 care packages sent to the military overseas. The team also worked at a soup kitchen along with a canned food drive. “We have great support from our community here in San Angelo, and we feel it’s important to do what we can to give back,” said head coach Travis Scott. “It’s important for our players to use their abilities as student-athletes to make a positive effect on a young person’s life.”
